The pop-up exhibit on Victorian mourning that I decided on Monday to create for October has snowballed. It started out with an Out to Lunch program that I'm scheduled to do on October 9 on mourning traditions. I want people to be able to see actual mourning artifacts (including our wonderful hair wreath), so the pop-up exhibit was born. We were also trying to figure out something seasonal to do for the Path Through History Weekend on October 12. So, I'm adding seven small history panels to our main gallery with local stories of graveyards, funerals, and memorials. On each of the panels will be a symbol to help visitors solve a puzzle and earn a prize. I suddenly have a lot more work to do, but it is a lot of fun.

I rehung the hair wreath today. It's apparently a visitor favorite (my mother-in-law asked about it when I first started working here) and has been in storage for quite a while. So, I decided to bring it back out. It was made in 1861 by Harriet Foote using hair from her family and friends. It is massive. The frame is 41" by 38".
