I've been thinking about KHR's bonds. (When am I not?) And I've thought about the way that Amano likes to write bonds. You'd be pressed in this fandom to find people who don't care about at least one area of it whether that's the Vongola kids, Varia, the Arcobaleno, Kokuyo, etc. After a conversation with my best friend, I realized it's kinda interesting how Amano has somehow successfully created so many realistic bonds for such a diverse cast. Like we see so little of them, but you'd be pressed to convince the KHR fans that the funeral wreaths don't adore Byakuran.

So there's the thing right? Katekyo hitman reborn is the shonen that is 100% about the power of friendship. Like yes other shounens use it and its a meme for a reason, but they also have other stuff going on. Other motivations. Other theming. Meanwhile Tsuna growing up and becoming a better person for his friends /is/ the theme of Reborn. That is the entire motivation for the series. There's no grandiose scheme where Tsuna will save the Mafia world and be the chosen one, though the series tries to put Tsuna in this position to his chagrin.

As evidenced by the scene in Future arc, where Tsuna is unable to light his ring because he is so stressed about sending everyone back to the future and fighting this unknown powerful enemy. And so Reborn walks up and tells him "You're not a hero. Stop trying to be. It's not like you. What were you thinking about when you first lit your flame?" And he responded with "I just..wanted to protect Kyoko." Reborn satisfied with that answer then asks, "And who do you want to protect now?" And Tsuna answers with "Everyone." And then his ring lit up. That's the core to the series!! Right there!! All it ever was 403 chapters worth of these characters just wanting to protect each other.

So, in talking to my best friend, he pointed out that outside of daily life arc, these characters don't really have moments of vulnerability towards each other. Frankly, it seems the cast of KHR is allergic to being vulnerable. There aren't that many scenes of "you guys are important to me. I love you guys." Y'know stuff that tells the audience yeah these guys are close. And when Tsuna TRIES to have these moments, like with Reborn, Reborn pretends like he's asleep and doesn't hear Tsuna say that he's going to save him. Yet somehow, we all understand that these characters love each other so deeply.

And that made me realize it's all in the dialogue and actions, rather than inherent bonding moments. It's Reborn clenching his fist when Tsuna is getting gravely injured by Daemon. It's Yamamoto and Gokudera having a fight about Gokudera not being worthy of being Tsunas right hand man as Gokudera doesn't care for the other members of their family. And Gokudera never addressing this again, there's no verbal indication that Gokudera even heard Yamamotos criticism. Yet later during Merone invasion, Gokudera reaches a hand out to catch Yamamoto when they're getting separated. And later, he protects Ryoheis unconscious body as he is fighting Gamma to the death. It's Byakuran saving the funeral wreaths from their miserable lives and them protecting him even when he begins to strike them down. It's the way Mukuro runs to assist Chrome when she is in danger, or swears up and down that he is not allied with Tsuna but also feeds the Vongola information about Byakuran. It's the way Squalo refuses to cut his hair for his vow to Xanxus, or Mammon's gratitude towards Xanxus's willingness to fight for them. It's Ken ensuring that Chrome is always fed by giving her the snacks and candy they bought. These characters don't need bonding moments, their love for each other shines through their every breath and finger twitch.

And I think that's a fascinating way to write a connection on Amanos behalf. And it was done so well we can't even argue that these characters all love each other.

The way I summarized it is most characters love each other because they spend time together and improve together. KHR characters spend time together and get better together because they love each other

Hi I read the khr crossovers - but I just don't understand what nana is. in the skull story she is a kannagi but is she a shopkeeper like yuko from xxxholic? then what about watanuki? Also what is gamma?

The Florists of the Never Forget series

Hi! I guess I'll put a proper chronological order of events about what Nana is here. So first yes, Nana is a shopkeeper like Yuko from xxxHolic-- but in a different dimension.

for the AU, The CLAMP universe is the world of Hitsuzen. KHR is in the world of Dying Will. (Similarly, FMAB is the world of Truth. All different universes, so different shopkeepers. Technically the 'shopkeeper' of the FMAB universe is the door of truth itself.)

In the world of Dying Will, there are a hundred parallel timelines. Each timeline has a different shopkeeper (which is called a Kannagi). They are all the same person in a different incarnation. Less vital detail, but they are usually the holder of the Sky Mare Ring due to this dimension-supervising role they have.

Then there's the Inari. Basically the twin guards that protect her-- 'the mysterious bridge' connects to both the YuYuYu and KProject worlds to KHR. The shopkeeper can appear anywhere (but there's only one of her.) The Inari is one person with two bodies, one on each side of the bridge.

The shopkeeper can't leave the shop, so the Inari are basically her footsoldier/errand boys. They have much shorter lives than the Kannagi, but can exist across multiple timelines.

The first timeline's shopkeeper is Sakurai, and her timeline is the timeline of my Assassination Classroom OC fic, Outsider. There's no real relevance here except that she adopts the Second Reaper, Ran, at the end of their story, making Byakuran her first 'child'.

In the fourth timeline (Dahlia Dahlet), she marries into the Vongola and becomes Vongola 8th, Daniela's, mother. Daniela is actually also the second Inari, Beta, but that's only vaguely relevant. Beta is replaced by Gamma in the sixth timeline, and continues to serve her all the way through to the seventh timeline so far.

The sixth shopkeeper (Sia Campanula) is the timeline where As the Gods Will's god selection happens -- this timeline is abandoned at the end of their story, where Luce travels back in time, Daisy becomes god, Oregano and Lanchia move on to the seventh timeline, and Killian Campbell joins Byakuran as his Cloud Funeral Wreath.

Since the sixth timeline's been abandoned and the shopkeeper is gone, Gamma has been basically maintaining the balance on his own. Alpha and Delta's stories haven't been written yet, but they will also be canon characters.

Ran (Byakuran) was entrusted with the 100th timeline. But because that's the timeline Irie messed up with his time-travelling experiments, it was destroyed.

Now we have the seventh shopkeeper, Yuuri Nana. This is the canon timeline. It is the timeline with the most amount of dimensional whiplash due to the events of the FMAB installment. to maintain the order, Nana gives up her role as the shopkeeper and marries Iemitsu, settling down and giving birth to the first of her children that's fully human and of this world-- Tsuna.

Since then, Nana's Sky Mare Ring has been entrusted to Byakuran, who now governs the seventh timeline's future. This is because Byakuran made a deal with Ms Sakurai, and now he's ordained by destiny to become the villain of Tsuna's story.

Prologue Part 1

KHR TYL!Timeline & Consequences

This all started with a short-sighted act of revenge, like so many other parts of Vongola's bloodsoaked history.

After Byakuran's death, and the death or capture of the Six Funeral Wreaths, Millefiore's downfall was basically ensured, meaning the misplaced teenagers were finally allowed to go home! There were quick, but heartfelt goodbyes and then, one by one, the time travelers stepped through the large, round machine to finally, finally return home.

Accompanying them for a two-way trip, of course, were this time period's Arcobalenos. Just to seal the Past's Mare Rings, to prevent any further heartache. To hopefully change all parallel worlds in which Byakuran succeeded with his hostile takeover.

The machine could only handle one or two people passing through it at once, so sending the teens back became almost ceremonial. Not to mention that there was a brief overlap when some of the teens encountered Vongola's actual Boss. Adult Tsuna instantly grew flustered and uncomfortable with the amazement and praise he was receiving and retreated to the back of the room.

A naive mistake...

Either way, inevitably the young Hibari Kyoya stepped up to the portal. He'd be the last to pass through, right after their Skull, whom this teen unceremoniously kicked through ahead of himself.

Tiny Kyoya waited for the machine to fall silent, signaling that it was fine to pass through, only to turn slightly, now facing the room. That angry, sharp whistle immediately got everyone's attention and the teen gave them an absolutely withering glare. "This was by far the worst week of my life."

Confusion instantly silenced all conversations, several people now alert and worried, but the teen continued easily. His smirk was definitely cloudy and sadistic when he pulled something out of his pocket. "I'm taking these as compensation."

And there, comfortably clasped between the teenager's fingers, wrapped in Mammon's chains, were the missing Sun and Lightning Mare Rings. Every other ring has been accounted for, only those two were presumed lost or destroyed, because they didn't show up on any radar when the scientists checked.

Instantly, everyone lunged for tiny Kyoya, but even as a teen, he'd always been unnaturally quick. At the very least quick enough to pocket some rings and take a step, before any of them managed to grab hold of him. Not even Dino's whip snapped that fast. Tsuna might've stood a chance, but with how far away he was from the machine, he didn't have a clear path.

And just like that, the machine whirred and Teen Kyoya disappeared in a flash of light.

Chaos immediately ensued.

For a moment nobody knew what to do and even then, most of the adult guardians did not have any kind of reason to trust Irie when he urged them to follow the teen to retrieve the rings. And no, Adult Kyoya could not be put back in the machine to force the teen to reappear.

Mostly because he was experiencing advanced symptoms of blood loss. Afterall, he'd been bleeding from countless wounds he suffered at Genkishi's blades for all the days he'd spend in the machine. Tsuna forced first aid onto him immediately, but it was still too late.

Because when the Arcobalenos returned, which they did within minutes, they did so all at once. And that promptly melted through the round machine's core processor and fried most of the attached computers' motherboards. In summary, they are stuck until everything would be repaired, at which point, who knows what that teenaged menace would've done with those rings!?

At least, even with several chunks of their Tri-ni-sette unaccounted for, Time, Space and Reality didn't rip apart at the seams...

... Right?

Thoughts on Iris Hepburn?

OK first of all, her subordinates are so obviously racist caricatures, it's just extremely uncomfortable. It didn't clock when I watched KHR as a kid, but it's just so blatant to anyone with half a common sense? In my delusional, headcanon addled mind, I see her as a POC herself because I crave representation in media, and I just... pretend that her canon abilities which are next level problematic simply don't exist, but... yeah.

Beyond that, she's another female character who deserved sooo much better. She got majorly shafted in the long term. After she lost to Tsuna she was basically never seen again, beyond showing up to pick up Ghost. Compare this to Genkishi, for example, who even appeared with the real funeral wreaths for the Choice arc, and it's just painfully obvious how much KHR hates its own female cast.

Personally, I wish they hadn't given her white skin while also vaguely making her poc-coded with the afro, and I wish that she had a larger role in the story, considering that literally every other female character with any screen time at all is treated like a plot accessory to a male character's narrative.

Tangent, but, to name a few: Bianchi with Gokudera or Reborn, Lal Mirch with Colonello, Chrome and M.M. with Mukuro, Haru and Kyoko with Tsuna... like please just give the girls agency I'm begging?? It's a double standard too, or I wouldn't complain nearly as much. Yeah, it's fine to have characters that have feelings and connections to other characters, but when literally every female character in your story is defined by who she is to a male character, it is noticeable!

Back to the topic at hand, Iris was kinda interesting if I ignore everything that's deeply racist about her character design. She manages to be in the extreme minority of female characters with an actual backstory, which is a positive thing I can say about her.

Plus, after she lost to Tsuna and basically got relegated to doing grunt work, she expressed frustration over how she was being treated, so I think she had potential to come back and try to do something about it. Iris is a go-getter, she's not the type who'll just sit around and tolerate being stuck with a unsatisfactory lot in life.
