Yuri's Birthday

20 September is Yuri's birthday.

Yuri: Happy birthday to me!

He really likes his birthday and he loves to celebrate it. Each one signifies another year of defying the odds, and he likes to think of birthdays as a sign of good fortune. Rather than lamenting the fact that he's getting older, he always wants to celebrate another year of being alive to learn new things, achieve new goals, and to love and be loved by his family and friends.

In the morning, Caroline and Victor were busy in the kitchen, making some treats for Yuri's birthday.

Then, Caroline went to change while Victor organized everything. Presents, flowers and Yuri's favourite strawberry cupcakes... it definitely looked like a birthday party!

Caroline chose a strawberry-themed outfit for the occasion.

It looks like these two are excited for the festivities!

Victor: Everything looks awesome! Thanks for helping out.

Caroline: No problem. It was fun, and I think maybe I like Yuri's birthday as much as he does.

Victor: Happy birthday, love. You made it one more trip around the sun.

Yuri: Thank you. Forty-seven's not too bad for someone who wasn't expected to live for more than a day or two, don't you think?

Victor: I'm glad you're still around. Every day is one more day I get to love you.

Yuri: I intend to be around for a lot longer yet.

Victor: Good, 'cause I'm not done loving you yet.

Yuri: I hope you never get done.

Victor: Don't worry. If we both lived forever, I still wouldn't stop.

Yuri: Neither would I.

Victor: For you.

Yuri: They're beautiful!

Caroline: Is it time for cupcakes yet?

Victor: I don't know, but I'd say somebody thinks it's time for wine.

Yuri: Don't judge me. It's my birthday.

Victor: Look at you! You must be feeling really good. I'd better document this moment, 'cause if you keep enjoying your wine like that, you're not going to be feeling all that great later.

Yuri: I'm forty-seven years old. I can do what I want.

This family wouldn't be who they are without a little silliness, so they had to break out the party hats for some cute family photos.

It looks like Yuri might be starting to feel his strawberry wine a bit...

The silliness continued when Victor brought out this box of mochi. This is one of Yuri's all-time favourite treats. The boys thought it'd be funny to try feeding it to each other. They made the most exaggerated faces and spent more time laughing at one another than actually managing to get any mochi into each other's mouths.

It seems there'll be more birthday activities later...

You had asked him when his birthday was once, when he was traveling with you- a trip having to do with the Academia. You’d gotten close to him, worming into his life- despite his best efforts to not let you. He would not be betrayed by another, yet here you were.

“What need do I have for a birthday? It’s a stupid-ass mortal thing.” He responded.

You poked his arm. “C’mon. Tell me, please?”

“No.”

This continued for awhile until he swatted your hand. “If I tell you, will you shut the hell up?”

“Yup! Pinkie promise!”

He stared at your hooked pinkie like it offended him. You dropped your hand.

“I don’t think I have a birthday. I don’t remember the day my mother created me.” He said after a pause. “So even if we were to… celebrate it, we couldn’t.”

You think for a moment. “We could pick a day?”

He’s silent for a moment, and you’re about to try another idea, before he speaks. “January Third.”

“Why that day in specific?”

He’s silent. It’s the day- roughly- he was cast down to Teyvat but his mother. There could be other days he could consider his rebirth, but that day… he considers that day as his first true birth.

“No reason.” He says finally.

It’s January third at long last. You know he prefers things bitter- he says he hates sweet things, but you’ve caught him sneaking a piece of your candy that you carry in a little pouch before- so you made him dark dark chocolate, cranberry, and orange tarts. You taste-tested one, and they’re good for once. Your cooking skills are.. less than stellar.

“Thank the Archons.” You mutter.

“What are we thanking the Archons for?” You hear him grumble as he walks up to the table you’re sitting at outside the cafe in Sumeru City’s lower level. You have the container of tarts sitting on the table, as well as two cups of the most bitter tea the cafe has, and a box.

“Er-“

His eyebrows raise as he sits down. “What the hell is this for?”

You grin. “Happy Birthday, Hat Guy!”

He inspects the food, the tea. He can’t really eat- he doesn’t need to, but he takes a small nibble. It’s bitter. He likes that.

He picks up the box, shakes it. What’s inside rattles. He raises an eyebrow at you.

“Open it.” You gesture at the box.

He does, and inside is a bracelet. You made it yourself. It’s relatively plain and simple, woven yarn braided together. He takes it out and he just stares at it.

Oh, Archons, does he not like it? Now you’re worried.

“Thank you.” He says it so quietly you don’t hear him the first time.

“What did you say?” You ask.

“..Thank you. Nobody’s ever done this for me.” He repeated.

“Oh. Don’t worry. I enjoyed it.”

You sing him the happy birthday song as he eats a tart, rolling his eyes at your antics. You spend the rest of the day hanging out together. It comes to a close far too soon for his liking.

And when you part ways that night, he thinks to himself that this a day he’s never going to forget.
