yulilara (HEAD IN HANDS): so, yulia p1 design docs, she developed the theory of humility after having a falling-out with lara and leaving her social circle. this is what some may call "Coping". they still think of each other as "nice" but they have found themselves incompatible after a period of being close and specifically lara haaates yulia's new fatalism... yulia claims to have moved on and has her thing with eva but tries to sacrifice herself to stop lara from being executed... you don't have to jump through a lot of hoops at all to translate this over to patho2, which introduces a new and exciting layer of gender where you can read lara as envious of yulia's lifestyle as part of her general feelings of frustration and immobility

as for rarepairs I think anna/aspity can be fun though it's kind of on the brink of "let's pair up these two leftover women". well they're both weird #Haters. what more do you need

Which one are you finding the hardest to finish?

#2... It keeps growing... I thought I would end with an AU equivalent of Jing Beiyuan faking her death but then I started writing post-fake death... and now it's 90% ex-criminal-but-still-committing-a-continuous-crime Jing Beiyuan relearning how to be a normal person and Wuxi fitting herself back into a normal life 🤦🏻‍♀️Also did I mention the procrastination with my drawings?

What does it usually look like when inspiration strikes for you?

Unfortunately I think when I am most inspired it prevents me from writing haha. I get all excited and then stare off imagining the scenes... and do not write them. But there is a moderate amount of inspiration where I go onto 4thewords co-op writing battles and write out 10k in a day. I had several of these days in July and then have not since...

Do you curate playlists for each fic or is your process different?

No... I feel too much pressure to have songs that "relate" to the fic and I don't like doing that because it's time consuming and burns my energy that could be spent writing lol. Also I don't usually do any creative things with music because it's distracting to me

Do you go balls to the wall and write as you go or are you more organized?

I am a pantser mostly (tragic result of often having more vibes than plot thought out haha) but for certain long fics I will put together a detailed outline

Okay so funnily enough this was the ask where I was saying idk if it crossess a boundary or not but well... then my computer reset and I lost my answer asdfgh. For the record it was girl Pierresteban with a little bit of exploration of sexuality for the femslash fest. Considering its for a fest and I have been reminded that I am lowkey rotating a carcar wip in my head anyway that I need to yap about... (that being said I am always down to yap about that girl Pierresteban as well haha)

Anyway, carcar also known as Oscar and the wonders of learning a second (?) language below the cut :3c

For some quick context, its been a hot sec since I dated a Czech person (thank you years of international education and mostly being friends with international people even irl), and more often than not I have dated people whose first language was not one that I speak and even tho none of these relationships was particularly serious, the scenario of what if I end up with someone whose first language I dont speak is a very real possibility. The solution, to me at least, is obviously try and learn the language (I am also bad at learning languages but thats neither here or there)

So anyway, I project this onto a blorbo. Obviously. Carcar, vaguely established relationship but they started as a weird enemies fuckbuddies situationship in the quintessential carcar way and slowly morphed into something... softer, more serious, less angry hate sex fuck our frustrations away and more careful, comfortable, loving even. Still very quintessentially them but also with an undertone of I care about you and your comfort is the priority.

The thing is they've had this slightly less angry relationship going on for about a year but also they are still disasters and have not talked about it. So Oscar is pretty sure they have been together for a while but also have they? Hes realized he cares about Carlos somewhere along the lines and well... Carlos was the one that started the beef in Oscars opinion, so what if this is still just a way to relieve some steam in Carlos' eyes?

But its winter break and Oscar is bored and also maybe a little bit misses Carlos way more than he is willing to admit and somewhere along the lines he decides to learn Spanish. He will not take any questions at this point. Leaning Spanish also carries a certain amount of plausible deniability, its one of the most common languages in the world. Good for connecting with foreign fans or something if anyone asks.

This is roughly where I lose track of the plot for now. Tho this fic is less about the act of learning a new language and more about the intimacy of knowing someone's first language, how much of a person is hidden behind the translation from their first language into a second or even third language, and how learning their first language might just be one of the greatest and most intimate at the same time proclamations of love out there.

And yes, of course they do eventually talk and establish their relationship, and yes, it has stopped being a way to relieve frustration for Carlos months ago as well, obviously. Probably a slightly (very) sappy end, tho we dont talk about Oscars language skills. I can and I will project that part of myself onto him, the inability to learn a language.

what are your top ten favourite anime ships?

Hi! Thank you for your question!

To be honest, I've left my shipping days far behind me especially since I got into writing Reader Inserts — I can't even remember the last time I rooted enthusiastically for a ship (besides Garashir and Janeway/Chakotay from Star Trek DS9 and Voyager).

(Also, I just wanna quickly clarify that I don't actually ship Mizuki and Gegero, even if I do see/understand why they're very popular when I saw the film. I was just awestruck by the official art, haha)

And I know there's currently a ton of debate surrounding shipping, to which I'd like say that I seldom have any icks or squicks when it comes to pairings. If I dislike a ship, it's probably because of a bad experience I had with their fans. However, I would add that my favourite ships are pretty vanilla and tame, and more often than not the result of my asking, "What if these two randoms were placed in a room with one bed together?" I love a niche pairing with zero fics written for them on AO3, lol.

So yeah, I'm gonna spotlight some of my niche pairings that I enjoy quite a fair bit! All of them are het and slash ships, I'm afraid, out of sheer coincidence that most of my favourite characters are male. I do love femslash/yuri ships as well, but they're generally quite popular, so I wouldn't be contributing anything new. They're not ranked in order of preference because I love them all!

Hijikata/Otae, Gin Tama: I love Otae so, so much, and I think she gets a ton of unwarranted hate from a vocal minority of the fandom on Twitter and Reddit. The GinTae vs GinTsu debate is still very real in 2024, but I think my girl deserves a man who earns a stable income and doesn't denigrate her appearance.

Koenma/Botan, Yu Yu Hakusho: The first of many niche pairings to come. Botan is such a lovely girl who is friendly with every one, but I get a kick out of imagining the two of them getting into all sorts of trouble and shenanigans whilst nagivating the bureaucratic hell that is, well, Hell, and falling in love in the process. And have you see the official art of them together? It's so cute!

Ogata/Sai, Hikaru no Go: I was so disappointed when I didn't find any content of them both! I think Ogata would have gone insane had he been the one to stumble upon Sai's Go board, before falling in love with him, and then into despair as he realised he cannot touch the one person he loved and idolised the most.

Muzan/Tamayo, Kimetsu no Yaiba: As a KnY fic writer, I feel obliged to include at least one ship from this fandom. I love all canon and fanon pairings in this work (a rare thing for me, personally), but I especially love the divorced couple dynamic between them both. The most recent season finale cemented that belief for me, and I do spend a lot of time brainrotting over their past before Muzan encountered Yoriichi.

Kusakabe/Utahime, Jujutsu Kaisen: I stumbled upon this fanart a long time ago, and thought: "Spectacular; give me 14 of them right now." He's an experienced First-Grade sorcerer who's honestly not the best teacher, she's a Second-Grade sorcerer who loves her students — they bond over their mutual irritation for Gojo and absolutely hooked up during the exchange event.

Shunsui/Ukitake, Bleach: What's there not to love about Old Men Yaoi? I've loved these two ever since I saw them, individually and a pairing, and I don't I will ever forgive Kubo for separating them in TYBW (albeit in a good way). The Hell arc was just the icing on the cake — a reverse star-crossed lovers, if you will.

Ryoga/Ranma, Ranma 1/2: I love a small-stakes rivalry, and there's something very cute about a guy who absolutely does not care about the gender of his opponent and will stop at nothing to fight them.

Shishiba/Osaragi, Sakamoto Days: Let it be known that I've clocked this couple ever since they first appeared in the manga, and I staunchly believe that they're endgame. Chapter 161 was everything — nothing can convince me otherwise that they're just mentor and mentee. Have you ever seen a mentee stroke her mentor's cheek as he laid bleeding on the ground, saying: "I'll be right back. Don't die"? Yeah, I thought so.

Mitsui/Yohei, Slam Dunk: I wish I could give a better explanation for why I love them so much, but really — the moment I saw Yohei beating the crap out of Mitsui with relative ease and zero effort despite being the smaller guy, I just felt the yaoi monster stirring in its sleep and shaking my bones. A former student athlete-turned-delinquent crossing paths with an actual delinquent makes for such fantastic tension, really.

Jotaro/Kira, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: I actually thought very long and hard about my favourite JJBA ship, because, like KnY, I love all of the characters and have no issue with either canon or fanon pairings. But then, I saw this fanart of JoKira/KiraJo, and it scratched such a specific itch inside my head that I have not been the same ever since.

Here it is! I had an fun time thinking about my favourite ships and choosing those that were truly obscure; some of them — HijiTae and ShunUki — are fairly popular, but I think my preference for them trumped any other rarepair I could have thought of for that fanbase.

I definitely think Aiden would enjoy them for fun, he and Evie have definitely spent time doing stuff like kicking/tossing a ball around. He otherwise isn't that into sports outside of running and cardio workouts.

how did they figure out their sexuality/gender identities? how did they talk to each other about it?

Evie figured out she was bi basically from reading slash and femslash fanfics in middle school. They were sort of refreshing romances to read in a genre dominated by often gender-normative hetero romances (mlm smut was also comforting to read, especially as standard m/f smut triggered her feelings of bottom dysphoria). I think I did have some more thorough headcanons about it somewhere but yeah, it helped Evie understand herself better. She's questioning for a while, and then by around 9th grade, she has figured herself out as bi.

I have like a very long WIP post detailing how Evie figures out she was GNC. I can't exactly go into it without making an essay haha. As of now most of the details are best explained here.

I haven't fully figured out how Aiden figured out he was bi. It's confirmed that his parents and Maria's dads have known each other for years, and assuming her dads were openly mlm that early on too, I definitely think that would have had influence on Aiden. I like to think he would have figured it out sometime in middle school and he and his parents might have had a brief talk about it somehow.

Aiden basically has his genderqueer/gendercreative awakening from Evie. Her GNC styles sort of inspire Aiden to try out different styles himself.

Probably E.T. by Katy Perry? I feel like it fits them in some weird way. They also definitely have their Big Dance to it during HSS:CA's prom, which fits because I chose the galaxy prom theme.

I don't have a lot of thorough fleshed-out headcanons for that aspect... it's just kind of a casual thing. As of now it's best explained here + here + here.

At one point, they do move down to San Francisco and live for a year in a small apartment. But after that, they move back to Cedar Cove and get their own house.

sure! So I started this for femslash week last year since Soulmate was one of the themes, but in the mix of it all, this one went unfinished. I managed just under 300 words and the concept is that everyone has soulmarks, but it's actually something something shady government something and not actual soulmates. anyway Nancy was gonna have Steve as her soulmark but fall for Robin and this was all far too ambitious considering everything else I had on deck for femslash week

since it's so short i'm gonna post everything I had under the readmore-- bear in mind that i write out of order and often in short snippets when i'm starting, so this is several disconnected parts

Nancy’s seen her mother’s soulmark, seen the words Ted Wheeler printed on her like a brand. She watches her parents at dinner in the evenings, the minor rise and fall of her mother’s face. It’s supposed to be the best thing in the world, some sort of almost magic, like it’s your birthday every single day. But her mother, most nights, looks little more than resigned to her fate.

In the shower, Nancy scrubs at her wrist until it’s raw, but the words don’t fade even the smallest bit.

She thinks, accidents, she thinks, things that look like accidents. There’s a running list that she keeps beneath her pillow, tallying all the household items sharp enough to tear off skin: the kitchen knives, her dad’s razor blades, the sewing shears if she can just find the right angle to hold them at.

Steve Harrington is a nice guy. She sees him in the halls sometimes, next to a girl with sandy hair and button-down vests. It’s the girl who she’s spent the most time looking at. The way her gaze can go from sharp in seconds, how interesting she looks both ways. Her hair is fluffy some mornings, like she’s slept on it without brushing it later. Nancy imagines running her hands through it. She thinks it’d be soft, and maybe it’s okay that Steve’s her soulmate if it means she’ll get to meet this girl.

I will say, as someone who both writes novels and blither on social media, the latter is something I can churn out in ten seconds between dealing with The Spawn. The former requires concentration and, often, a good night's sleep. It might seem like I can barf out many paragraphs at the drop of a hat, but they aren't the paragraphs I'd most like to be writing.

Still... one does wonder how much more we'd all get done if we spent less time sitting around complaining or spinning our wheels.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Ever? Listing them in vague order of when I started writing for them: Supergirl, Wynonna Earp, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Grace and Frankie, This Way Up, Once Upon a Time, Madre Solo hay Dos (just on Tumblr), Abbott Elementary, Hacks, and Julia

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

ALL of them are Supergirl from back in the early-ish days of the show when it was a pretty massive (by femslash standards, I suppose) and very active fandom! It's actually so interesting seeing how absolutely nothing I've written in more than half a decade even shows up, since I've largely switched to smaller fandoms since then.

But the top 5 fics by kudos are:

Stronger Together, a collection of one-shots for various Supergirl ships (with a few gen fics mixed in), which has nearly 5k kudos (WILD to me as someone now in a fandom with maybe 25 people total haha)

Welcome to the Gayborhood, my first ever fic, a looong Sanvers and Supercorp professor AU that still keeps the alien/supernatural elements of canon

6,500 miles away...but getting closer, a Sanvers epistolary fic that my wife and I actually co-wrote and posted 1 letter/email per day every day for many months

Noise Complaint, a Sanvers next-door neighbor AU that, hilariously, given its placement in the top 5 here, is what catalyzed a series of events that led to me very much leaving the fandom (and fandom writ large for nearly a year)

Supercat Sanvers 2020, a Sanvers and Supercat political AU that was maybe one of the last long-form works I wrote before moving out of DC!

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I really try to! Sometimes if it's from a person I know well, I end up responding via DMs, esp if there are questions about what comes next, plotting elements, etc., that I don't necessary want everyone to see while the fic is still being posted, but mostly I try to respond on AO3. I've gotten a bit worse in the past few years just because I'll manage to eke out a bit of time to write, which puts me behind on my work, and then I don't leave myself time to respond, and by the time I DO have time, it feels awkwardly late to do so. But even if I don't respond, I absolutely love/cherish/adore/etc. every single kind comment I've ever been given <3

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Forgoten, but not Gone - a Sanvers amnesia AU set post-breakup that's heavy on the angst with a rather ambiguous ending. I got talked into writing a part 2 that resolves the angst haha, but taken on it's own it's definitely my angstiest ending!

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Huh idk! Most of my fics end on fairly happy, if a bit open, endings. I'm not a big fan of having all the loose ends tied up, and I realllyyyy don't do the marriage/2 kids/white picket fence epilogue, so I guess maybe the political AU has to be up there because it actually envisions a world where a queer woman wins the presidency on a progressive platform, and that feels rather utopian 🙃

8. Do you get hate on fic?

Not in a while, though I used to back in the days, like super vitriolic shit (big fandoms with too-big emotions, man... which has really kept me away maybe forever from those kinds of fandoms!)

9. Do you write smut?

Haha very much so. I've written and posted before about why, but I really believe there's so much interesting character work and exploration that can be done by exploring characters' pleasures, their desires (both thwarted and realized), their fantasies, etc. Obviously smut isn't the only way to do this, but fanfic feels like one of the few venues where it's a real possibility!

10. Do you write crossovers?

Nah, not really. I've written a handful of bring characters x and y into the universe of another show fics, but that feels mostly different. Every so often I'll borrow vague character outlines for tertiary characters in other fics just to see if folks recognize them (had Grace Hanson as a grumpy background character in a Sanvers fic set at PT for instance hah)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Once or twice, but we got them taken down

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yeah, one of my SG fics was translated into Russian! I'm not sure if it's still up (tbh I can't recall which one; it's been a long time!) I've also had a couple podfics now made of my fics, one of which I still need to go listen to when I get the time!!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yeah! The long-form Sanvers epistolary fic my wife and I co-wrote together, and a group of Supercat authors got together and did a delightfully chaotic round robin, each writing one sentence, then setting a timer for the next person to write the next sentence, etc., until we had Intergalactic Standard Cuddling

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Oh man, I really don't know that I have a favorite! I really appreciate what various ships can offer me at different times - there are certain themes that make sense to explore with one pairing but not at all with another, or certain AUs that work in one fandom but not really in another. Basically, if a show is giving me multiple female characters who interact in canon in ways that go beyond existing near each other, I'm intrigued, and if these characters actually get depth and complexity, I'm probably in! There are, however, some ships that I might not end up feeling fannish/creative about even though I love them as ships (I talked a lot to @trying-to-get-somewhere-real about this recently, actually!), so it's hard to name a favorite when the metrics get all wonky!

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

I don't want to say never, but I have a Cat-centric fic that'll end on Supercat that just has a lot of angst that coincided with a period of unexpected loss and grief in my own life in ways that have made it really hard to get back into even now (it just feels so...enmeshed with that moment, even though the timing was utterly coincidental)

16. What are your writing strengths?

I think I do a good job with dialogue and getting characters' voices down - I'm really into the character side of things (which is also what gets me invested fannishly in shows! I want a show that cares about developing their characters first and foremost vs. a show where plot takes priority)

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Certain kinds of action scenes haha - also I tire easily of writing things that feel repetitive to things I've done/written before (this was more of an issue when I took prompts)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Largely, this isn't something I've had to deal with much outside of maybe a few phrases and sentences from multilingual characters. I've talked before about how it was actually the language/translation barrier that kept me from writing for Madre Solo hay Dos. I don't speak Spanish, and getting a show entirely via the Netflix-provided translations meant 1) I was fairly certain there were some word choice/dialect peculiarities I was missing, and 2) I couldn't catch the rhythms of their speech, the cadence of their voices at least in ways that corresponded to the specific words. For me, voice matters so much, and it really felt like a barrier to not have access to the source language because I felt like I couldn't do these two women justice!

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Oh I've answered this elsewhere with 2-3 works, and tbh I don't think it's changed since then! I'm actually far more interested in others' favorite fics of mine because it's so interesting to think about the question of *what* sticks with a person from yours (it's often so idiosyncratic!!)
