Patent Model - Improvement in Boats for Duck-Shooting, made by Robert Bogle, 1857, in the collection of the Hagley Museum (@hagleyvault) of Wilmington, DE.
Bogle's patent was an improvement to "a low floating boat or battery for trailing and shooting duck and other water-fowl, in which the gunner is secreted, as well as the boat, and protected from the surrounding water, while he can propel the boat toward the game by his feet and legs…" (Patent number: 17,192)

From the Shadows is the debut release from The Hagley Wood Vampires, a rather eclectic dark alternative band from the UK. By even their own admissions on Bandcamp, the Vampires list a number of genres spanning from gothic folk to industrial rock. It's a lot to take in at first, despite being only 8 songs. That may seem short, but Tactical Neural Implant is only 8 songs and that is Front Line Assembly's masterpiece. Anyhow, it's uncommon to hear chuggy metal guitar or a blues rock solo against the ghosts and cobwebs conjured by the more haunting and ethereal woman vocals. It is an interesting juxtaposition reminiscent of Bow Ever Down. Lyrically, the Vampires offer the usual skeletons and vampires with that touch of dark romance, thematically tying together an otherwise near haphazard collection of tracks. What helps bind the album even more so is the DIY production, a slight tinniness that sounds as if it were recorded at a home studio. While a less glossy master might turn off some listeners, I found it added a certain charm. The mix adds a raw intimacy that runs counterpoint to some of the more French coldwave elements as might be found in a cold and lonely mausoleum. I'm curious to hear more, to see if the band focuses their sound or continues to lift elements both modern and classic, from cinematic synth pads to a jangly and watery guitar tone. Standout songs for me include the more classically gothic Vampire Sorrow and the epic folk metal Lone Wolf.

Earl of Plymouth Monument, Bromsgrove Lickey, Worcestershire
In 1833 Other Archer Windsor, 6th Earl of Plymouth, died. Almost immediately there were calls to erect a monument in his honour, and a public subscription was raised. With funds in place, the foundation stone was laid in May 1834. The chosen site was on Bromsgrove Lickey, a prominent eminence which would ensure that the obelisk would be an ornament to the landscape and visible from miles…

Happy birthday to me! I took the day off of work Friday to give myself a long weekend. Before I started working, I used to go to a weekly coffee with a wonderful group of women, but I don't have the opportunity anymore now that I'm working that M-F 9-5 grind. So, this lovely Friday morning, I headed off to Dune in New Brighton for some lovely breakfast and coffee. I have some amazing friends back home who kindly sent me a few little treats, and they were able to give me a great day!
Once breakfast was over, I decided to go to the hot pools, which was only about 2 minutes away. It was a bit of a crappy weather day - the day started by raining sideways with high winds, but I kept an eye on it, and, when there was only one ticket left in the time slot I wanted, booked in real quick to make sure I didn't miss out!
It was still a bit miserable when I got there (as you can tell), but it was so nice to sit and relax in the hot pools. The rain let up and the blue sky peeked out after all!
After that, I went to grab myself a few cupcakes (salted caramel macaron and lemon meringue) and got ready for dinner.
I went out for dinner at a place called Bar Franco with Lauren and Heather. We had a nice meal that ended with some limoncello, before heading back home for a few more drinks.
All in all it was a great day!
Saturday, I took the day to rest and relax. I caught up with the Meg(h)ans, Erin, and Katie Cooney for a while, including a slide by slide review of the PowerPoint they put together from their visit to me. Afterwards, I went for a nice walk and had a chill day, ending with watching the JLo/Owen Wilson film "Marry Me."
Sunday, I joined the group I usually walk with for a great walk around Hagley Park with a lovely coffee break. After, I caught up with Erin (not the same one as Saturday) before getting ready to head into the week. Felt very loved this weekend with all the birthday well wishes!

The Strap of the old schoolyard.
Aren't our kids lucky today, I was at primary school in the 1980s and we had a principal who had been a teacher from the 60s and believed in Strapping, good old Mr. Bell, he would be dead now I think.
I recall in about 1986ish we were in a water crisis in Christchurch and there was a strict water ban at our school, But kids being kids me and my small group of friends had a water fight And got caught. we were hauled into Mr Bell's office as a group and he told us all life at once I had one of my friends look over at me and he smiled and made me laugh, and Mr. Bell punched me with his finger on my chest and yelled 'What are you laughing at' I replied 'Shannon looked at me.' I don't know why but I'm smiling as I voice type this, jeez we were punks.
Another one of my teachers would throw chalk if you were misbehaving she's now the principal at my old primary school, then there was Mrs. Oliver She would grab your cheeks and squeeze your cheeks together, and tell you off, My older brother also had her as a teacher and would talk about the way she grabs people's cheeks in a joking manner.
Another one of my teachers Mr. D he would also strap happy and would use intimidation by moving the strap across your desk, if the strap made it to your desk he would strap you. once he strapped an empty desk and the disk fell apart.
I'm not saying that these guys were bad teachers they weren't. Mr. D wrote in my school report that I am concerned for OBwans future, my dad got me tutoring after seeing that school report. but life has thrown me a few curveballs and I have to say he was right about me.
it was funny when I entered high school in the 90s I dated Mr. Ds niece very briefly she told me he was living down south.
lucky me also had a father who would wake me with the vacuum cleaner pipe if I played up, like not going to school was my biggest thing. I hated school I was bullied on and off at every school, primary intermediate and high school, didn't grow out of it until I went to Hagley college for my 5th and 6th form years, and my attempt at Lincoln University I went one day and anxiety took over.
Today kids would be assessed for ADHD and ADD but that wasn't even a thing in the 80s, I could be wrong though, I did have a reading assistance teacher, mum and I would bike to another school because my school didn't have the resources.
After I left school I joined the LDS church (17 yrs old) met my future employer there he had just started a start-up business (early 2000s) that became a multi-million dollar business today 2023. I stayed there 7 years During that time I got married and had a child, and left the church, and went to Polytech CPIT or ARA today, and tried Carpentry. During that time my wife and I split which made school really really hard emotionally. (25)
During carpentry, Quantity Surveying (QS) caught my eye, and I dropped carpentry and enrolled in that, a Diploma course that should be longer than 2 years lol The workload was crazy, I should have done it part-time. I only did the first year and didn't return, like some of my other classmates.
