Byzantine Art

Byzantine art (4th - 15th century CE) is generally characterised by a move away from the naturalism of the Classical tradition towards the more abstract and universal, there is a definite preference for two-dimensional representations, and those artworks which contain a religious message predominate. However, by the 12th century CE Byzantine art has become much more expressive and imaginative, and although many subjects are endlessly recycled, there are differences in details throughout the period. Whilst it is true that the vast majority of surviving artworks are religious in subject, this may be a result of selection in subsequent centuries as there are abundant references to secular art in Byzantine sources and pagan subjects with classical iconography continued to be produced well into the 10th century CE and beyond. Using bright stones, gold mosaics, lively wall paintings, intricately carved ivory, and precious metals in general, Byzantine artists beautified everything from buildings to books, and their greatest and most lasting legacy is undoubtedly the icons which continue to decorate Christian churches around the world.

Byzance

La cité antique de Byzance fut fondée par des colons grecs de Mégare vers 657 av. J.-C. Selon l'historien Tacite, elle fut construite sur la rive européenne du détroit du Bosphore sur ordre du "dieu de Delphes" qui dit de construire "en face du pays des aveugles". Cela faisait référence aux habitants de Chalcédoine qui avaient bâti leur ville sur la rive orientale du détroit alors que la rive occidentale était considérée comme beaucoup plus fertile et mieux adaptée à l'agriculture. Bien que la ville ait accepté l'alphabet, le calendrier et les cultes de Mégare, beaucoup reste encore inconnu sur sa fondation. La région devait rester importante pour les Grecs comme pour les Romains. Située dans une région très fertile, la ville avait encore plus d'importance du fait de sa position stratégique. Non seulement elle gardait la seule entrée de la mer Noire, mais elle se trouvait aussi près d'un profond bras de mer, la Corne d'Or, faisant que la ville ne pouvait être attaquée que par l'ouest.

Justinien Ier

Justinien Ier régna en tant qu'empereur de l'Empire byzantin de 527 à 565. Né vers 482 à Tauresium, un village d'Illyrie, son oncle l'empereur Justin Ier était un garde du corps impérial qui accéda au trône à la mort d'Anastase en 518. Justinien est considéré comme l'un des plus importants empereurs romains et byzantins tardifs. Il lança une importante campagne militaire pour reprendre l'Afrique aux Vandales (de 533 à 534) et l'Italie aux Goths (de 535 à 554). Il ordonna également la reconstruction de l'église Sainte-Sophie (commencée en 532) ainsi qu'une campagne de construction à l'échelle de l'empire, qui se traduisit par la construction de nouvelles églises, de monastères, de forts, de réservoirs d'eau et de ponts.
