A knife being toiled around in languid motion between a woman's fingers would be snatched suddenly at the hilt, it's sharpened blade pointing directly at the man's head. It's owner would speak with a curt tongue, the woman's eyes suspicious, "What good is the undefinable? If you don't know what it is or how it works, let alone it's intentions, ought it be culled? Or studied?" @haela-balcyan

It seemed that for once, on a lonely night of thoughts to himself, he had let his guard down. There was a cool breeze that carried the scent of Peacebloom with a hint of carrion from a kill in the distance. The dark silhouette bore some features in the moonlit night as the head of the creature before her turned. Ghostly white bangs seemed to veil that truth to his eyes, shadowing them with mysteriousness in their unseen gaze. For be brief, the edges of the dagger seemed to have wisps of shadows dance around the tip like a flurry of obsidian embers.
" To cull that which is undefined means to rid the world of something or someone out of fear. Fear of what it is capable of or what it may have to offer. " Smoothly his voice flowed, baritone that possessed a peace and carnage all imbedded in the way it slid off the tongue. " However, always consider when choosing to study that whatever it may be, there's always a chance it may bear its fangs not merely out of instinct, but self-defense and preservation. "
At this point, he gently raised a hand. A hand that was missing its ring finger at that. A taloned finger now tracing across the blade's edge ever so delicately. His touch admiring the attention in detail. Ashen lips slowly upturned into a smile. The darkness in his eyes unchanging. " May I help you, miss? " He asked just as calm as his previous statements.

Haela Hunt-Hendrix has justly gotten loads of acclaim for her work as Liturgy but I wish this collab with M. Lamar were more well-known!

me contemplating why I jumped into opera so suddenly this year and remembering I stan a well-off white transgender woman from the USA who plays black metal in opposition to its mainstream European sound and argues in fragmented sentences that opera (in fact a rotating mix of multiple art forms around a tangled spine of music and drama at its most fulfilled) is able to confront the question of why we are even here at a level that most other art forms alone can't go

girl I feel you, it's hard to really get thoughts out on a video this raw (this was in 2020 but anyway)

The creature that was the cultist did not rise as she listened to the hollow words emanate from the fel lit unblinking eye. She could hear the frustration and disappointment but it would not change where she was now.
"I apologize for evading your eye for so long, if I had known you were in search of me I would have been a bit more present," Oplisca croaked out as she kept her eyes to the scratched stone beneath her. "My capture was not by that of the local guard, as you say they are not of the highest caliber. But there are others who are more skilled in this work."
"Regardless, my lord, I beseech your forgiveness in this matter and offer what I may to bring balance to the peace between our causes," the creature spoke again in it's ravaged voice. Her spindly hands splayed out on the stone as she lowered her self further to rub her face into the stone. "How may I serve?"

A eye floated where it shouldn't. It wasn't the masters eyes. It was not an eye they'd called. It was watching them all the same. As if taunting them to continue their ritual, or wordlessly admit they were worried of interference.

Focus gathered as dull eyes retreated restoring a certain awareness that had been absent for many days. Filth and grime were abundant in the forgotten prison known only as the Stockade, the prisoner's cell no stranger to these judging by the rotten food, neglected chamber pot, and the thousands of scratches littering the old stone.
The husk of Oplisca Du'mere blinked once and saw the eye, her ravaged and scarred body naked in the low gloom of the cell she had been held in for so long. She made no move to cover herself as the bone thin frame shivered, this form held nothing appealing less the viewer bore very curious desires. It was only flesh to her. Easily found, easily fixed, and easily tossed aside.
Again she would blink as she rose from her prone position into a wobbly kneel before the eye that floated above her. Head bowing as she spread her claw like hands out and prostrated before the viewing. She knew it's master and she knew her place.
"You honor me, Lord Felscythe." Her ruined vocal cords croaked in a whisper. Many would strain to hear such languages, but she knew he could hear her. A master of the arts such as himself was not to be deterred by a whisper compared to a shout. "How may I serve?"

Jared's Top Ten Albums of 2024! 5. Uboa - Impossible Light
Tumblr media
Ambient and noise music can be difficult to write about. It often boils down to "made me feel nice :)" or "made me feel sad :)," or in the best cases "made me feel both :)". But I'm gonna do my best with Uboa.
Uboa is the musical project of one Xandra Metcalfe, a trans woman from Australia. Her album The Origin of My Depression made waves in noise music circles back in 2019, and it's one of my favorites! As the name suggests, it's a pretty devastating album, so I was prepared to be hurt again by Impossible Light. While it's still a harrowing listen at times (see the harsh noise passages of "A Puzzle" or "Weaponised Dysphoria"), Impossible Light tempers itself by allowing a little hope to shine through in the epic near ten minute closer Impossible Light / Golden Flower, stressing that the horrors of living life as a trans woman are worth it for the chance to live your truth as your true self. At least that's what I glean from this. There are lyrics, but often they are obscured, either by the volume of the surrounding chaos, whispers, or screaming either from Uboa herself, or from one of several guests, including fellow trans heavy music artist Haela Hunt-Hendrix of Liturgy fame.
It's also surprisingly "musical" sounding, for lack of a better term, with "Endocrine Disruptor" even approaching sounding like a traditional rock song, with it's natural drums, crunching guitar, and screamed vocals. Elegant melodies peak through the oppressive atmospherics of electronic feedback and noise. Hope and beauty attempting to overtake the harsh darkness, before finally it relents in the end. It's a very cinematic album, one that demands to be listened to in whole in a single sitting.
Uboa has released two very excellent, and honestly very different visions of noise music in the past ten years, and she's definitely earned herself a fan in me. I can't wait to see what kind of directions her music takes in the future. The way she creates these cinematic journeys into her struggles both with gender dysphoria, depression, and the societal place of trans people are both thrilling and heartwrenching. Hopefully the Impossible Light at the end of the tunnel grows brighter for her, and everyone, every day. <3
