Parasite Beta Call
Hey, friends! I'm in need of a beta reader for PARASITE (Working Title).
Quick Details
Age: Adult (could argue New Adult)
Genre: Horror-Thriller
Word Count: 91k
Dual POV & Timeline
Content warnings available at request
Story Blurb
Non-binary college student Art Haeberlin isn’t used to being so frustrated, especially with their brother, Tristan, who seems to be avoiding them. But when their mother calls with news that Tristan’s gone missing—his truck flipped, an unknown person’s blood on his front seat—the ambitious Art pushes that irritation to the side, dropping everything for a chance to bring him home.
Reclusive Tristan longs for escape—from his dead-end job, his childhood bedroom frozen in time, and from himself. When he starts dreaming of a mysterious woman singing him a haunting lullaby, he gets the escape he craves, drawing him to a derelict house within his rural Midwestern hometown, and into her arms. The innocuous-looking woman, however, is not who she seems. A blood-sucking siren, she’s been ensnaring people for decades, forging a bloody brood of vampire-like monsters before killing them off one-by-one—and Tristan’s next.
To rescue Tristan and the others caught in her web, Art will have to infiltrate the house soaked in death before it’s too late. But houses where you can’t tell who is and isn’t a ghost are better left abandoned and if Art isn’t successful, they’ll not only lose their brother, but also become the alluring Vivienne’s next victim.
What I need
A "yes, these edits work" or "no, they don't" read, which I can elaborate more on if interested. (It's mostly a read on a new story structure.)
What I don't need
I don't need any sort of grammar/editorial assistance, which includes developmental or copy/line edits.
When do I need it
The story is ready now and I'd love feedback ASAP. However, I'd be fine as long as I received the feedback by March 31 at the very latest.
Let me know if you're interested!

Margarete Haeberlin Rudolphi (1879-1954) pintora alemana.

Even in the rarefied world of haute cuisine, the Hôtel des Berges's restaurant is exceptional. This beloved gastronomic institution was opened by Frédéric Haeberlin in 1882 as a modest country inn on the river Ill in Alsace. The cooking was done by his wife and later by their daughter and daughter-in-law. A grandson, Paul Haeberlin, won his first Michelin star in 1952, a second in 1957, and the third in 1967. His son, fourth-generation chef Marc Haeberlin, is now in the kitchen.
Interior Design Hall of Fame member Patrick Jouin and his partner, Sanjit Manku, recently completed their second renovation of the restaurant, celebrating its 50th year of Michelin triple-stardom. Jouin describes the 4,250-square-foot update as “an enchanted moment for diners in communion with nature.” Like overhead reflecting pools, enormous mirror-polished stainless-steel disks ripple on the ceiling. A panoramic mural in marquetry, a typically Alsatian craft, depicts a moonlit riverbank with a heron and storks in flight. On the floor, swaths of wool carpet in cerulean and aquamarine, deepening into a riverbed ocher, “bring the spirit of the river inside,” Manku adds. Finally, a shimmering wall—combining oxidized copper, more than a dozen fabrics, embroidered butterflies, and paper songbirds—adds a flash of fairy-tale fantasy.

"Some centuries after Yunus lived, a collection of his songs came into the hands of a certain orthodox and narrow-minded cleric by the name of Mullah Kasim. This Mullah Kasim sat himself down on the bank of a stream and began to read Yunus's lyrics. Reading through song after song, the Mullah could be heard to mutter the word 'blasphemy,' crumpling that particular page and throwing it into the stream. Unfortunately, he had gone through about two-thirds of the collection before he read the line in which Yunus reminds himself, 'Speak truly, for one day a Mullah Kasim will judge you.'
At that point the Mullah stopped discarding pages. The lyrics that were not cast upon the waters comprise what we know of Eunus's work today." --introduction to Helminski & Algan's translation of Yunus Emre, The Drop that Became the Sea (1989)

More Quarantine Reading
While the rest of the country has been stuck at home with nothing to do, I’ve been in my happy place----reading! I keep up with the news (most of it has been heartbreaking), and I watch a few Bravo TV shows or binge watch Netflix, but reading is still my go-to when things get to be too much for me and I need to escape. I don’t understand people who don’t enjoy reading; I firmly believe they just haven’t found the right books yet!
We Are All the Same in the Dark by Julia Haeberlin
Wyatt Branson finds a young girl on the side of the road. She’s got one eye and no desire to talk about it, or to talk about anything, actually. Odette Tucker, a police officer and one-time girlfriend of Wyatt’s, takes the girl into her custody for her safety. While all of this is going on, we start to learn Wyatt and Odette’s history, how Wyatt’s father and sister have been missing & presumed dead, how Odette became a cop, despite dealing with a disability. There’s a lot more to this story, but I don’t want to get too far into it and accidentally cross over into the land of spoilers. Haeberlin often writes about strong, complicated women from Texas, this book included. I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like this one, especially since I wasn’t all that crazy about Odette (liking lead characters often times affects how well I like the book), but since I finished reading this one over a week ago and I’m still thinking about it, I’d say I liked it just fine.

The F List by Alessandra Torre
Emma has always wanted fame, and the money that goes along with it…and the easiest way she’s found to get it? Social media! She uses Instagram more the way regular people breathe air, with endorsements on everything from clothing to yoga studios---she “sells” her lifestyle. When she’s asked to participate in a “Big Brother” type reality show with her secret crush and 5 other singles, she realizes that not everyone is who they portray on camera, although she’s having trouble proving that about herself. I read this book because I read another by the author that I liked very much (Ghostwriter) and was hoping I would like this one, too. Unfortunately, this was so predictable, I just wasn’t a fan. Written in a documentary style, with posts and interviews, all I could think of was how I’ve seen this type of writing done before…and done better. Do I make a nasty pun about this being on the F-list for reasons other than fame, fortune, & followers? Nah, you get it.

The Ultimate Switzerland Itinerary (2020)
From stunning lakes and epic mountains, to adventurous actions and stylish lodges, this Switzerland itinerary takes you on a whistle-stop tour of the nation’s highlights.
In the case of magical European adventures, a visit via Switzerland undoubtedly comes excessive on the record. It’s a compact sufficient nation to suit loads into one journey, however numerous sufficient to see and do loads.
I like which you can begin the day in a cosmopolitan metropolis, by the afternoon you might be biking previous a gorgeous lake and by the night you could possibly be snowboarding within the mountains! What number of locations provide that a lot selection?
Whereas there are many stunning spots you could possibly go to, I’m going to information you thru a route that provides a little bit of all the things, and provides you an summary of the very best issues to do in Switzerland.
It’s a visit I went on December with Most well-liked Accommodations, the world’s largest unbiased resort model, representing 750 lodges, resorts and residences throughout 85 nations. Nevertheless, it’d be equally as stunning (and loads much less snowy) in summer time months. Both means, you’ll go by Lake Geneva, snap pictures of the Matterhorn and luxuriate in all of the chocolate and cheese you could possibly dream of! What extra might you need on a Swiss street journey?!
Watch the video for a flavour of the journey, then discover out extra about our superior Switzerland itinerary…
Finest time to go to Switzerland
Switzerland is an all-year vacation spot, however you’ll have to determine what sort of vacation you wish to go on earlier than deciding when to go to. These are your two principal choices….
A snow-filled, winter wonderland journey, with a keep within the mountains and loads of icy actions.
A sunshine-filled spring or summer time journey, the place you spend each second exterior, climbing, biking and having fun with lush valleys.
When it comes to temperatures, you may count on highs in summer time of 26 levels within the cities and lows in winter of -30 (within the mountains). With altitude to take care of, you may count on fairly a distinction in temperatures between cities like Geneva and high-alpine villages like Zermatt.
I ought to point out Switzerland is notoriously costly. There are methods to maintain costs down, however I feel it’s someplace to avoid wasting for a particular vacation – maybe a honeymoon, birthday or anniversary. Benefit from the plush lodges, gourmand eating places and create some particular reminiscences.
Champagne welcome at The Capra, Saas-Price
The way to get to Switzerland
There are many flights to Geneva and Zurich every day. From London it’s a fast journey (underneath an hour and a half) and for those who e book a window seat, you’ll be rewarded by beautiful views of the Swiss Alps in your journey.
My return flights from London had been round £150 (together with baggage), reserving simply three weeks earlier than travelling. In the event you plan additional prematurely, or are capable of take the earliest flights of the day, you’ll find offers for underneath £50 return. Whereas I’ve talked about it’s most likely not a rustic to go to on a finances, the flights are extremely affordable.
Lake Geneva from Montreux, Switzerland
In the event you’re already primarily based in mainland Europe, there are many trains connecting all the foremost cities and cities too, together with Zurich, Geneva, Bern and Lausanne.
When you’ve reached Switzerland I’d advocate hiring a automobile so you may discover the nation by yourself time. It’s a gorgeous nation for a street journey, particularly when you get into the alps.
If driving doesn’t fill you with pleasure, then don’t fear – most locations are accessibly by public transport. You would possibly discover it useful to select up Swiss Journey Move which covers transport within the nation by rail, street and waterway, and is out there for journeys between Three days and 15 days.
How lengthy to spend in Switzerland?
I’d advocate spending 5 days in Switzerland to actually really feel such as you’ve had a flavour of the nation as a complete. Nevertheless, for those who’re restricted to a shorter size of time, you could possibly cram an honest overview of the nation into three well-planned days.
A 5-Day Switzerland Itinerary
There are many locations you could possibly go to, however I’ve targeted on three principal areas – Lausanne / Lake Geneva, Saas-Price within the Swiss Alps, and Zermatt near the Matterhorn.
LAUSANNE ITINERARY
Discover town of Lausanne
Lausanne is a really fairly metropolis, with a shocking Gothic cathedral, historic buildings with vibrant facades and a buzzy procuring scene. I’d advocate a wander via town centre, climbing the Escaliers du Marché (picket stairs which might be over 400 years previous) to the cathedral, then climbing to the highest of the tower for an excellent panoramic view of town.
Exploring Lausanne metropolis centre
Lausanne metropolis centre
Afterwards, head right down to Les Arches, a novel bar set contained in the archways of the Grand Pont bridge. The bar appears to be like out over place de l’Europe, so it’s the proper folks watching spot. All through the festive interval, you’ll discover Christmas markets round this space too.
Lausanne Cathedral
Take pleasure in views of Lake Geneva
Whatever the route you decide in your Switzerland itinerary, it’s doubtless you’ll go Lake Geneva, or Lac Lémon as I affectionately heard it referred to in Lausanne.
We didn’t have the very best climate throughout our time in Lausanne, however on a transparent day the views from Ouchy (Lausanne’s port space) are completely spectacular. Take a stroll alongside the sting of Lake Geneva and also you’ll see boats coming and going, with stunning views of the snow-topped Swiss Alps within the background. There are many eating places on this a part of town, many with stunning lake views.
I took these pictures from Montreux, a brief drive from Lausanne. Simply have a look at how clear the water is!
Lake Geneva from Montreux, Switzerland
Keep at an opulent resort in Lausanne
We checked into five-star Royal Savoy Lodge and Spa in Lausanne, considered one of Most well-liked Lodge’s assortment in Switzerland. I’d liken it to staying at The Ritz in London!
