I am so glad the new kdramas are bringing back the specific brand of loser men. You know which brand I'm talking about. The Ahn "min min" Minhyuk brand of loser men and I'm loving it. The "I worship this goddess and I'm so in love with her and I can't believe I get to love her. Oh my gods I love her so much" brand of loser men. And we're being fed so well with lovely runner, love next door, no gain no love, my demon, Cinderella at 2am, Hierarchy, Midnight Romance in Hagwon, doctor slump, Queen of tears, welcome to samdal-ri and even good partner (yes it's one sided but the dedication and yuri's couple too).
We need more fictional loser men who worship women to satiate our eldest independent daughter desires.

this scene was so beautiful, painful but also powerful. the way he called his father, the way he cried, the way he just hugged him, the way his father called him....OMG
he stopped looking for his biological father. but in the middle of the night, when everyone was asleep, he started wandering the streets while he was confused and didn't know where he was. for going to his father. bc he felt that his time was getting less and less. a father who didn't consider him as his own son and Hae-jo lived with his memories all this time. it didn't matter who his biological father was. every time he went after each candidate, he compared him in his mind with the man who had raised him. I had watched in other dramas that usually parents who raise a child were afraid of their child finding out that who are his/her real parents. because if that child found out, he/she would want to go to his real parents. but in this series it was completely the opposite. even after he found out about the truth, he lived with that man and expected him to be his father. even after he ran away from home. I'm glad and sad that he stopped looking for his biological father and returned to who he knew his father. even if their meet was so short.
Heung admired Hae-jo's way of life and he ran away from home like him. but unlike Hae-jo's father, Heung's mother found him and told him to stay away from home as much as he wanted, but to be careful and come back whenever he want. Heung didn't know that no one had asked Hae-jo to come back and Hae-jo wanted to go home despite all the freedom he had.

Hierarchy

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
Hierarchy (2024, South Korea)
Director: Bae Hyeon Jin
Writer: Chu Hye Mi
Mini-review:
Oof, what a disappointment. I feel like this wanted to be one of those transgressive teen shows we get in the West, but then it didn't have the guts to go all the way and ended up being like any other kdrama about the rich and the poor. And even then, it's just not good at that either. The writing leaves a lot to be desired, and it gets more boring with every episode. The acting is also all over the place; some of the actors do a solid job, but most of them are mediocre or downright terrible. Tbh, there are two things that save this drama from disaster: firstly, the director adds a lot of style and flair to the proceedings; secondly, sometimes it's fun to see a bunch of super pretty people all together in one place. But still, there are a lot of shows where you can find those things with much better quality. I wouldn't recommend Hierarchy, unless you really love someone in the cast...

Group B |

(a brief info: Group B, also known as Icers, escaped from the Maze three days faster and lost fewer people than the Gladers, showing that they were significantly more capable than the Gladers. Their Maze was in a snowy, coniferous forested area that they called "the Spring". Rather than Grievers, the group had giant, flying, winged bat-like creatures called Shades.)
There are eight girls who first came in the Maze: Park Hee-jin, Gina, Lee Bora, Seo Ji-woo, Han Se-mi, Jung Ye-rim, Nam Chae-young, and Han Song-yi. I'll add a few more to make the members eleven (before Eun-seok and Ju-hee) — Group A still has the most members.
When Eun-seok came, which made the girls suspicious at the sight of a boy. Gina was so skeptical that she believed WICKED had sent the boy to torment them. So, along with some girls, she attempted to kill Eun-seok. Luckily, Hee-jin — the Leader — stepped in and defended the Blondie (slang for Newbie, just like Greenie), glaring at her second-in-command; she told her to not act quickly and WICKED must've sent him for a reason. Gina remained dubious and kept her distance, watching Eun-seok like a hawk.
Hee-jin is a determined leader, she keeps peace and will answer to any injustice. Gina is her second-in-command. Han Se-mi and Jung Ye-rim are the Medics (James Dashner didn't have specific terminologies in Group B so I'll make my own and here). Seo Ji-woo and Nam Chae-young are Mappers.
Han Song-yi is the youngest member. She feels closest to Hee-jin and is mostly found alone if her unnie is busy. She eventually becomes Eun-seok's first friend.
Despite not losing his memories at all, Eun-seok doesn't know most of them in the past. He feels alone and misses his best friends, hoping they'll stay alive until their paths cross. He thinks about them every day and stares at the stars. Then, Hee-jin approaches him and asks why he isn't sleeping. Eun-seok answers that he's thinking about his past. She shrugs and tells him not to worry, all of them have no idea about where they came from, and she always wonders if she has a loving family. Eun-seok sympathizes with this and the two talk under the stars.
Lee Ju-hee, the last member, eventually comes and that is when the Box has stopped going up. Group B realizes they will soon starve. They begin to prepare, though they give the Blondie an entire day to adjust.
Eun-seok goes to Ju-hee, who looks at him strangely. He figures she doesn't know him yet, so he reassures her that she's going to be fine and he'll protect her. Besides looking forward to seeing his best friends, Eun-seok wishes to reunite with Jin-woo and Hae-in someday, who were both close to him and Ju-hee.
Armed with spears, flames, and daggers, the group bravely enters the Maze. Ji-woo and Chae-young lead them while the rest fend off the creatures.
Eun-seok protects both Ju-hee and Song-yi.
Chae-young is the first one who dies, sacrificing herself to draw the Shades' attention from her group.
Ju-hee and Song-yi are the ones who managed to reach the end. Ji-woo yells out the code and Ju-hee hurriedly punches them in. Unfortunately, some members die before they can reach the exit, leaving only eight members surviving.
They soon get rescued by WICKED, who brings them to the headquarters. After sensing something bad two days later, Hee-jin hatches a plan to sneak out, so she ventures through the air vents and observes each path that might possibly lead to the exit. Once she figures it out, she encourages her friends to leave. Hee-jin and Ju-hee secretly make their way to Eun-seok's room to take him along.
Unfortunately, Eun-seok tells them to leave him behind. Hee-jin protests at this and says she can't let them do something to him. He smiles and hugs her, promising her that he'll meet her soon — he needs to see someone first. Hee-jin looks like she's about to protest, but closes her mouth, she touches his shoulder and gazes into his eyes; "make sure you stay true to your word." She says.
Eun-seok nods. Hee-jin goes back to the tunnel and Ju-hee is about to follow her when Eun-seok grabs her wrist, sneaking a small radio into her hand. The ginger looks at him perplexed and he mouths "I'll explain" then encourages her to go.
Ju-hee partially regains her memories. And the more she thinks about the past, the more she uncovers the rest, except for the faces of people who were once her family. She forms a closer bond with her group and they look after each other until the Right Arm finds them. She keeps in touch with Eun-seok, only answering the radio when she's alone since nobody else must know about it; he checks on her and the rest, asking her if she has met Yoon-ho and Byung-gyu or Jin-woo and Hae-in. Ju-hee shakes her head. She can tell how much he's struggling — the pain of being excited to meet someone who doesn't know who you are.
Ju-hee gets scared when she no longer receives Eun-seok's calls. Lee Bora is there to comfort her, even though she doesn't know why her friend panics at random times of the day. The biggest relief she gets when Min Byung-gyu steps into the tent and then how he tells her about Eun-seok during their journey while she's treating his wound.
Song-yi remains alive. Although, she won't be coming when the cast goes to the Last City. She'll be in Safe Haven with Ye-rim while the rest are off to fight the organization that destroyed their lives.
Lee Bora is the only person who saw Ju-hee leave. It is more like she caught her packing her things and ready to leave. Ju-hee explains to her why and that a helicopter will be coming for her. Lee Bora is shocked — Eun-seok had just betrayed them, and now, Ju-hee will be leaving to take WICKED's side; she doesn't know how to feel being betrayed twice. Nonetheless, she lets it go and bids Ju-hee good luck. She's still hurt, and Ju-hee will not stop her from telling the others, already envisioning Hee-jin's reaction.
Group B counterparts with Group A:
Park Hee-jin - Lim Tae-gyu
Gina - Choi Jong-in
Seo Ji-woo - Baek Yoon-ho
Han Se-mi - Son Ki-hoon
Jung Ye-rim - Min Byung-gyu
Han Song-yi - Yoo Jin-ho

One of the things I love about kdramas is that it really subverts what masculinity is supposed to be. You see the loser who's down bad for the female lead (Lovely runner, queen of tears, Love Next Door, Strong Girl Do Bong Soon, the Judge from Hell), you see the soft masculinity in hometown cha cha cha, summer strike and Doctor Slump and extraordinary attorney woo, the protective kind of masculinity in any of Ji Chang Wook's and Ahn Bo Hyun's works, the reassured and confident masculinity of Seo Kang Joon in Undercover High school and Lee Jun Hyuk in Love scout, the playful masculinity in Twinkling Watermelon and Crash Course in Romance, the stoic but gentle masculinity in Doctor Romantic and Hierarchy, and the "I care about you and only you" kind of masculinity in Vincenzo to name a few.
This is progress from the old kdramas and I get that it's fictional and in real life, some of these actors are assholes. But in the era where Toxic masculinity is rampant, I think we can turn towards kdrama to have some inkling of what kind of man we should strive to be and what kind of man we should want. This should not something we see only in fiction. We should raise our sons (I'm 21) to be like this so that one day it's not just a concept for fictional love stories.

GYEONGSEONG CREATURE PART 1 - THE CHARACTERS (PART 2 OF 2)
Part 1 is here
The Characters:
The cast is uniformly awesome. Park Seo-joon's character, Jang Tae-sang starts off as someone who is only concerned about saving his own hide but he infuses his character with so much heart that even in the initial episodes, you end up rooting for him. The show is, very much, his hero's journey, going from someone who only cared about his own survival to one who's willing to risk his own life to protect others.

Han So-hee's character, Yoon Chae-ok was an absolute badass. She was more than capable of handling the shit that came her way. I loved that she was so confident of her abilities, she was excellent at her job. So-hee imbues her character with such deep emotion that you can tell that it's always on the simmer, her desperation warring with the bone-deep dread that her mother is dead. And then the final straw is the soul crushing horror they're confronted with when they infiltrate the hospital and find out what's been going on.
I also liked how the relationship between Tae-sang and Chae-ok developed. They start off at loggerheads with Tae-sang mocking the loss of her mother and Chae-ok seeing him as a profiteer, an opportunist. In a desperate fight for their survival against both the monster and the Japanese forces, they're forced to put aside their differences and work together and this is where they truly shine.
Their conflicting approach, where one is willing to die instead of surrendering and the other is willing to surrender to fight another day is what saves them. Chae-ok's drive to fight and keep fighting even in the face or insurmountable odds is what keeps them going when lesser people would have turned back. Tae-sang's drive to survive, to live is what keeps them alive when faced with near certain death. They fight for each other, taking the lead when the other falters.

I love that for people who seem so fundamentally different, they work so well together, perfectly complementing each other. I also love that when Tae-sang tries to save Chae-ok by asking her to leave, she refuses, she makes it clear that she doesn't need a knight in shining armour but a partner who treats her as their equal.
The other cast members are equally good, especially Kim Hae-sook as Nawol-deak, Tae-sang's 2nd in command. She's his pillar, the only person he can trust to take over the reins in his absence and she more than rises to the occasion. Unlike the others, she's unflappable, capable of thinking on her feet, weighing alternatives and wheeling and dealing the way Tae-sang does. She, like Tae-sang doesn't trust anyone (except Tae-sang.) She knows, only too well, how little it takes to break people, having gone through it herself.
Did anyone else wonder if it was Nawol-deak who gave up information that led to Tae-sang's mother getting arrested? Nawol implies that faced with relentless pain, people are willing to do anything to make it stop. That entire conversation and the flashback that followed, made me think if it was Nawol who finally broke and gave up information about her comrades.

Then there was Choi Young-joon playing Lieutenant General Gato, the most hateful character on the show, followed very closely by Hyun Bong-sik's Ichiro. The absolute lack of humanity they exhibit is far more monstrous than any other monster they could create. I'm pretty sure Gato is a psychopath. His quest to make a monster has nothing to do with patriotism. His military rank is a means to an end, it gives him the power and authority he needs to conduct his experiments with little to no oversight. He doesn't see other people as human beings, they are all, both the soldiers and locals alike, test subjects. The locals are used as lab-rats and monster bait while the soldiers serve to test just how much damage the monster can withstand, it's killing power and finally whether it can think and solve problems. The only thing Gato sees as worthwhile is the monster itself.
I would not be surprised if, in part 2, there was increased tension between Gato and Ichiro. Ichiro sees the monster as a mindless killing machine while to Gato, it's a like piece of art, it's an extension of his own genius and he would not take kindly to another scientist taking over. We saw it in Part 1 when Ichiro tried to train the monster, taking a page out of Ivan Pavlov's experiment, Gato's displeasure at Ichiro inserting himself into his work. This is not a man who shares or tolerates interference of any kind. I see conflict brewing between them that will perhaps be the source of their own downfall.

The other person who was absolutely spellbinding was Kim Soo-hyun as Lady Yukiko Maeda. Her portrayal is just... so intimidating. She's the perfect blend of gentility and menace. She has an ice cold demeanor that unsettles you even as her beauty disarms you and draws you in. By the time the show ends, there is no doubt who has the actual power in the Ishikawa home. This is a woman who will slit your throat and calmly drink tea and watch as you slowly drown in your own blood. it's a chilling portrayal and I can't wait to see more of her in Part 2.
I am excited for Part 2 to see how they close season 1 since season 2 is already in production. We do know that Chae-ok, her father and the rest from The House of Golden Treasure will launch a rescue mission for Tae-sang. I don't think Chae-ok will be content to leave Tae-sang behind, not to mention her mother's monster form is still inside.
Add to that, Myeong-ja is now infected and she will wreak havoc once she transforms (assuming she survives,) she is outside and she's pregnant. With Chae-ok's mother, we can see just how much the Najin caused her to mutate. I have a feeling that Myeong-ja's baby will be a hybrid, even more dangerous than the monster inside the hospital. It's also safe to assume that almost all of the antagonists will survive.

If you're hoping for a clean resolution in the season finale, you're in for disappointment. I have a feeling that the season will end with a broadening of the threat and our heroes will have to contend with not just those despicable scientists, Gato and Ichiro, they will also have the Japanese army after them after Kwon Joon-taek ratted them out.
I'll be happy as long as the season doesn't end with a cliffhanger. Season 2 is scheduled to stream in 2024, so on the plus side, at the very least, it's not a long wait. For now, I shall patiently wait for Part 2 and hope for the best...

Themes and Motifs
Survival and Resistance: Set against the backdrop of a war-torn Korea, the series delves into the struggles of individuals fighting for their lives and their dignity. The characters' resilience in the face of overwhelming odds is a recurring theme.
Humanity and Monstrosity: "Gyeongseong Creature" blurs the lines between human and monster, challenging viewers to question what it truly means to be human. The real monsters in the series are often not the supernatural entities but the people driven by greed, power, and hatred.

The production design, costumes, and special effects contribute to an immersive viewing experience that is both visually arresting and emotionally engaging.
