i've been. exceptionally slow at working my way through Spring in Hieron, because i find i'm needing to focus a lot more on work projects than usual.... but the upside of that is that instead of getting emotionally sucker-punched by podcasts in my cubicle, i get to cry over podcasts in the kitchen while getting ready for work in the morning!

(anyway i finished SiH 5 today and was quietly devastated by the Hadrian-Samothes conversation at the end)

am i the only one deeply frustrated by hieron fandom's treatment of emmanuel as like... the mediator in lem and fero's supposed relationship as opposed to someone who loves and cares for lem very deeply and gets frustrated with him sometimes? i have loved someone like lem king and i have been in the position of waiting and worrying and feeling that frustration and two-mindedness about the future and idk i wish that emmanuel were treated like a multidimensional person by fans because he really is in the narrative

hello hello, we are FAST approaching me catching up with the tag in its entirety, possibly even tomorrow! very exciting, and i've been really enjoying the recent stuff that people have been putting out

all good news by waltztangocache - a cori fic about premonitions regarding her wings coming in, and then the painful reality of it Happening. delightful to me

stand fast by blacksatinpointeshoes - you may or may not be aware that over the course of this project i have developed a particular pet peeve for rosana being mentioned in passing in Hadrian/anyone else fics and then any concerns about monogamous commitment being handwaved away. that is not the point of this fic, but if you read this fantastic Serious Power Imbalance Hadrian/Samothes smut, you might notice that this particular pet peeve of mine is in fact subverted on top of the already excellent smutty character study

more by accident than by design and as i would have you be by blackstainpointeshoes - to continue the blacksatinpointeshoes hype, i really enjoyed these two fics about Duvall and Lyke which imagines them as weird sorta-exes, and do indeed as promised in the tags include loving descriptions of bug infestations. love the Lye Lychen voice as written here

so there actually isn't a finalized next twenty because there are not 20 whole fics left in the tag for me to catch up with! there are only, as seen above, THREE. they are, at time of posting this writeup:

when i finish these i will. figure it out. i will probably post a provisional writeup with a better idea of how i will handle the project going forward. i've said before but i will consider the project "done" when the tag reaches 2000 fics. but that's complicated by secsam fast approaching, meaning we might creep up close to 2000 and then very quickly shoot past it making my clean end point of 2000 kinda silly if it's in the middle of a big fanwork event. just typing out my dilemma i'm starting to brainstorm good conclusions, so when i return i will hopefully have those plans ready to share!

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

well. I have a whole section of my wip doc (all of my wip docs actually, for each fandom that I have a separate wip doc for (f@tt, mdzs/untamed, and persona 5) and then also my "miscellaneous fandoms" wip doc) that is just an idea list (technically my misc wip doc has two idea lists, one for fire emblem ideas and one for everything else, because I realized fe3h was gonna be A Thing for me slightly too late to give it its own doc but early enough to separate out the ideas. anyway)

so. my various lists are full of things like "Werewolf x vampire Marianne/Lysithea" (fe3h) and "Corvo dying and coming back (inspired by Hadrian/Samot, Helladelaide, and game mechanics)"

Lyke being worried abt his friends is so good. Like I *always* have thoughts about how fatt does Found Family, and it's just impressive that even with everything [gestures at Virtue], this group feels the most like Actual Friends. maybe not closest, out of all the fatt season Groups, but very clearly Friends the way we don't get to see that often, imo. Probably also owed to the setting and the stakes their dealing with tho

extremely special to me how so many of the table friends in moments where they're discussing the game/often the characters they're playing open up and talk about hugely personal stuff to give context to things/talk things through on how realistic they are etc. Austin in particular does it a lot, and it's like. Idk, literally anything I want to say right now would make me parasocial. Don't write in the newspaper that I got parasocial. But also do know that I am very parasocial when it comes to the table friends.

You put him in my path.

this was as much a style challenge as a frantic attempt to process the full range of human emotion for me, i wanted to challenge myself to a really limited palette and draw off a simple sillouhette and try to make the piece dynamically interesting still. this is the first time i’ve done colored lineart, and it was really fun! i think it helped everything really stand out, and it provided good contrasrt for the minimal shading.

lines+symbolism breakdown under the cut!

now, onto the ludicrous amount of thought i put into this:

the five of swords as a card represents conflict, disagreements and regret, its mains themes are about winning at a cost, and comes up when youve done what you thought was right or ultimately got what you wanted but ending up hurting yourself or others in the process. it comes up when you need to be told to pick your battles, or when something you did had unforseen consequences. sort of a yeah you did what you wanted, but at what cost, and i picked it bc it really fit the scene that inspired me to make this the best.

i pulled symbolism from the 8 of swords and the 10 of swords as well, because those both fit the emotions of the scene as well, but not quite completely. the stars reflecting off the ring and covering hadrians face are meant to imply the blindfold from the 8 of swords, which represents feeling trapped in a situation or in your own head. more importantly it represents self imposed restrictions and self limiting beliefs, which fits rly well with hadrian as a whole, and especially how he is Right Now.

the four swords in his back were placed there as a reference to the ten of swords. typically in five of swords artwork, the subject will be holding 2 to 3 swords, with the others lying on the ground as they walk away victorious from the battle. however, i really couldnt figure out where i would put all the extra swords and have it make sense composition and symbolism wise, so i mashed the two together bc i also really like 10 of swords for hadrian. the 10 of swords represents painful endings, resisting inevitable endings, betrayals/loss, crisis, and regeneration. invoking the 10 of swords here serves as both foreshadowing for something i know happens at the end of this season, and to represent the betrayal that was yet another chip in hadrians metaphorical armor that is his relationship with samothese

also, its a little hard to tell with the lighting, but his gauntlets are the only part of his armor thats silver. theyre the same color as his sword, and my thoughts are a little jumbled but its along the lines of gold being the color of the sun, and that not being the color he wears on his hands or his blade, which are the parts of him that actually deliver the action. the sun coming throught the stained glass making them look gold is an interesting effect that i didnt intend, but i think it makes the piece more interesting as a whole, something something thinking samothese guides his hands, but ultimately theyre his

After Episode 24, I wanted so badly to take a stab at drawing Hadrian and his marble hand... and then I actually finished Autumn in Hieron and was so gripped by this moment that it spurred me to draw two hands (shout-out to @morgan-is-here​ for the excellent refs!)
