As you can probably tell, I’m not a professional cosplayer. I can’t sew and I didn’t exactly want to break the bank on the materials for my costume. But this past Halloween, I knew I wanted to take on the appearance of one of my favorite musical theater characters, Persephone from Hadestown. 

It all started last summer when I went shopping with my female relatives. I immediately fell in love with the jacket because it reminded me of Persephone’s fur coat. From then on, I tried my best to mimic the outfit she wears in act 1 in the Broadway rendition, but I had to take a few creative liberties. 

I couldn’t find an affordable dress that bore a close enough resemblance. So, I opted to go with a shirt and skirt I found at Goodwill. I couldn’t find any boots that looked good with the outfit, so I opted for sandals instead. I actually kind of like my choice of shoes because they have more of an Ancient Greece aesthetic. 

From the images I found, Persephone appears to be wearing a black necklace. However, I chose a gold chain instead because of the lyric in Chant (reprise) “If you wanna hold a woman, Son, hang a chain around her throat made of many karat gold.” I didn’t have a golden band, so I had to make due with my butterfly ring and my mood ring. 

Real quick tangent: The lyrics are most likely emphasizing Persephone’s desire for freedom and how the jewels are weighing her down. However, someone on Pinterest admitted that they didn’t know where they lyrics were from, but they noted that jewelry holds a great significance in history. Since women often weren’t allowed to have their own bank accounts, women often kept a lot of jewels so they could sell it if they needed to get away in a hurry. The reference was likely unintentional, but my personal interpretation is that the double-meaning could emphasize Hades’ inner struggle between what he wants and what he knows if right. 

I guess the reason I admire Persephone so much is because she represents who I wish I was. She’s funny, boisterous, and charismatic. Not to mention she’s got some killer dance moves! Meanwhile, I’m very socially awkward and I can’t dance for my life. But the more I think about it, the more I remember she’s not perfect either. Her character bio states that her wry sense of humor is part of her personality, but also something she uses as a coping mechanism. 

I also remember her verses in “How Long?” That’s the moment that really drew me to her character and made me realize there was more to her than I initially thought. It really shows a softer, gentler side to her personality that we don’t often see throughout the musical. That song shows me that I don’t have to be ashamed of being kind and gentle.
