One of the funniest parts of Hades 2, at least to me…
Spoilers for Hades 2 below
…is how skeptical Melinoë is of Odysseus’ boasts, which are all things that happened in the Iliad and Odyssey and which multiple people she knows could attest to the veracity of, but how she takes Skelly in Cosplay Commander Schelemeus’ tales of his own bravery and experience at face value. It’s like, Mel, baby, there is a reason he is not giving you specifics.

“So this, uh, those of you very familiar with Greek mythology will undoubtedly recognize the following character, who is all-new to Hades II”
“You can also see The Sorceress in action, though it’s a bit hard to see on Skelly, who is—uh, Schelemeus! Sorry.”
“Skelly? What? Never heard of him.”
This is the funniest bit of all time lmao

Skelly's new mode of speech and manner feel false, and I think that beard is fake. Which is actually a really cool reflection of his characterization in the first game, where he had an ambiguous, multiple choice past.
If I recall correctly, one rumor floating around was that he was a thief. Did Hermes say that? I can't recall. Then when he reveals his past as Schelemeus, it turns out to just be a prank he's pulling on Zag. Except then there turns out to be further evidence that Schelemeus actually existed.
When I first saw Schelemeus in Hades 2, I actually wasn't sure it was the same Skelly we knew. I mean, sure he looks the same, but for a moment I wondered if this was a joke more along the lines of "the guy he was pretending to be does actually exist, he was just mocking him for a laugh." But his stories of Zag and events of the past game quickly dispelled that notion.
To me, this all suggests Skelly and Schelemeus as personas that a single trickster uses to his advantage depending on the situation, with Skelly probably closer to who he is behind closed doors, but Schelemeus netter reflecting his heroic nature and motives. Perhaps in life he lived through a Bug's Life/Three Amigos type situation, where an unlikely rogue finds himself pretending to be a noble hero, only to end up becoming one in earnest.
When the Queen of the Underworld was kept secret, the world was frozen by vengeful Demeter, Hades feared war with Olympus, and the Prince tried to escape in a plot for peace orchestrated by Night herself and the Goddess of Wisdom, the best way to help was as a greedy fool, the type no one would suspect. When all out war broke out with a Titan, and the dead were evicted from their eternal resting place, the bigger help was a noble and heroic figurehead to rally those lost souls.
Point being, don't sleep on the comic relief skeleton/training dummy. I legitimately think he's one of the series' most well-developed and interesting characters.

so. skelly, right? fucking werido on many accounts and we all love him for it. not actually from any greek myths-- at least, not as "Schelemeus".
here's my crackpot theory: skelly was a mortal who died, was brought to the underworld, and then tried to escape Charon.
Now, this doesn't answer who Skelly is exactly, but it does explain why he's so afraid of Charon (see him not showing up for Charon's boss fight as a keepsake in hades i and bits of his dialouge from hades ii (i don't have screenshots but i read it myself ok, he's scared of/hiding from charon)) AND why he has an obol in his mouth in the first game. he was buried with it, and then ran away from charon without paying his due.
no wonder no one knows who he is. he isn't registered with the dead at all. he's been dodging questions about who he is and why he's here since the moment he died / got in the underworld.
this really doesn't explain much about him, but i feel like no one else here on tumblr has put those pieces together, so here. skelly dogded death on a weird technicality.
(it also kinda explains why he's a skeleton and not a shade. he kept his body, i presume, which rotted away, because he's dead, so now he's just bones.)

Idk if I'm stupid for just realising this but could it be that in Hades II Dora is the spirit of Pandora? I have no idea if this is confirmed or anything since I didn't do all the nectar and hangout event thingys but maybe? She has a fascination with doom and likes touching Mel's stuff speaking for her being curious and touching stuff. Can someone confirm this maybe? Maybe more content will be released alluding up to that but I mean, every character in the game except maybe Skelly/Schelemeus is a mythological figure so it would make sense, right?

I thought i might just put this out here.
I had some theories/ideas on the aspects we haven't seen their character for, so thats
Momus (Descura), the god of being a little hater
Pan (Lim and Oros), god of the wild
Eos (Ygnium), goddess of the dawn
Thanatos (Zorophet)
Persephone (Ravaal)
Why do I think these people show up? Hecate, I think, mentions that Melinoe will meet them
I imagine Than and Persephone to be encounterend in the House of Hades. I don't think this is such a great stretch, so yea.
Pan, I think would fit as a random encounter in the third area on the way above, which i assume is the plains of thessaly or maybe the foot of olympus (see the next segment why i think that). I imagine he could either give boon like Artemis or maybe just another reward maybe relating to plants? since hes a fertility god.
Tumblr media
Heres a map showcasing my theory of the route Melinoe takes to the Olymp. to address my choice of Ephyra, I chose Ephyra (Cichyrus) since that one has the closest mythological ties to the underworld (as far as my knowledge goes), since both Heracles and Odysseus passed it on their journeys. of course the distance in game gets smushed so take this with a grain of salt. Anyways geography lesson over.
Momus and eos could both show up in the crossroads since all the children of Nyx are welcome there, but Eos could also be met on Olympus i think as the reason why Mel gets sent back. this is because each attempt takes place in one Night, and the end of a night is the dawn. I have no theories what Momus could do other than criticise everyone, maybe give tips/run reviews but we already got Odysseus and Schelemeus for that.

Tumblrinos, tumblrinas, lend me your ears. This website has a problem, and that problem is this:
Where is all the Hades II fanart at? When BG3 came out I was inundated with pictures of Karlach and that sad vampire twink boy. Despite rigorously filtering out the tags I still can’t escape your Ineffable Husbandos or - twenty-something years after the books first came out, a decade since Rowldemort first peeled off her human skin suit to reveal her horrifying terven true visage - people drawing fanart of Harry Potter’s dad, Sir Only-Appearing-In-Flashbacks, and his utterly non-canonical gay polycule. So if it exists I should be seeing it, yeah?
Hades II feels like it should have everything a Tumblr user wants. Scary ladies? Nemesis will step on you. Weird monster girls? Scylla looks like she escaped from Undertale. If you’re too vanilla for that, have you seen Aphrodite?
Enbies? Chaos is incredibly dapper in this one, they are bringing that bishounen-and/or-bifauxnen energy right from the primordial darkness underlying creation.
If you’re into dudes, Odysseus has a certain roguish charm, Hermes got a hell of a glow-up, and Schelemeus will make you laugh. Hephaestus is bringing the dad bod.
What’s that? You only like tsundere sad boys? Moros is right there.
Is this that thing again where fandom only really latches on to a thing when they can make two boys smooch? Is that it? Aaargh!
In short, please draw more Hades II fanart for me to look at thank you.
