Hackney Weekend
Yes I know I'm slightly late. But this was such a massive event. There was no way that I would miss the opportunity to talk about it. Now for those of you who missed the event. I will give you the quick inside on what actually went on. Stars such as Jay Z, Rihanna and Trey Songz performed on stage at this festival. The event which took place in Hackney cost only £2.50 for anyone who wanted to attend. I saw this event being advertised a while back and like many others I assumed it would be a small event with artists I had never heard of before. Watching the event unfold from the comfort of my sofa at home was just as good for me.
Hackney weekend ended up being a Roc Nation weekend. Jay Z headlined on Saturday and Rihanna on Sunday. New signing Rita Ora wasn't far from view and performed her set on the day Jay Z headlined. Now down to the gritty information, what you came here to read. The highlights.
Trey Songz was one of the first artists I watched perform at the event. As usual Trey didn't disappoint and showed fans once again that he is a true artist. He projected his smooth vocals over the crowd. He showed today’s artists that being able to re- create the vocal precision in the studio while performing live. This is necessary to be called a real singer. As usual the majority of Trey's audience consisted of young females, teens mostly screaming their lungs to within an inch of passing out. Furiously fanning themselves in reaction to the sheer 'amazingness' of him. I did prepare myself to see this type of behaviour.
But I alongside with the presenters Fearne Cotton and the guy hosting the festival were especially shocked by the antics of one girl. As Trey prepared to sing 'Can't be friends' one girl right at the front of the audience. First began hysterically crying while flailing her arms around. Yet by one of his more upbeat songs was waving her hand up and down so hard it wasn't hard to notice the irritation of those around her. Who were being hit with this arm that had a mind of its own. All in all this was a magical and very intimate performance.
Jay Z. What to say. Never mind he was an hour late. His protégé Rita Ora informed the presenters she reminded him numerous times he was due on stage. Who cares? His performance can't be described to its full ability. Every action, even being late on stage was thought out carefully by this rap genius. There has been speculation that first he not only wanted to watch Jack White's performance but knew once his set ended. The fans would flock over to his stage, squashing any competition over audience numbers. The second is that he wanted it to be dark outside when he performed to create a specific mood for his performance. And the third is that Rihanna had just flown in that day to headline the festival the next day and he wanted her for the opening performance. So being the gentleman he is waited for her to arrive.
This was a spectacular set.
Rihanna and Jay Z opened his set by performing 'Run this Town'. The rap star then went on to perform some classic songs from his very first album. The set on stage was amazing with the spotlight remaining firmly on Jay Z at all times. The band was hidden in the rafters, there were no dancers, no hype man and it worked perfectly. His voice was clear and precise over the backing music, the fans screaming. Each word was pronounced with meaning and depth. There was another surprise as M.I.A a recent signing took to the stage to perform two of her hits. I am a massive M.I.A fan but due to no fault of hers the microphone she was using wasn't switched on. Meaning you could barely hear her sing the lyrics to her songs. This was disappointing as she is a great artist who hasn't been given the media publicity she deserves.
Jay Z closed the show with his recent album collab Kanye West appearing on stage. They performed a few hits from their joint venture 'Watch the Throne' and of course closed with their signature song Paris. The song was reloaded three times in reply to the screaming fans. It was truly amazing. So much in fact that I remained pinned to my seat for the entire duration of the performance.
Leona Lewis stepped outside of her comfort zone performing her new single which is a harder edgier song. Not expected from someone once described as the new pop princess. I was especially impressed with her rendition of Rihanna's 'Man Down' which she performed with her own style.
Rihanna took over the stage the next day. Giving her fans what they wanted to hear plus more. She sang all her hits and a few that weren't released that we heard on her albums. This was an energy fuelled performance with the singer tackling towering stairs and making full use of the stage. Jay Z returned the favour by performing with Rihanna on stage to 'Run this Town.' All of the songs she performed were great and performed at a high level. A personal favourite of mine 'Man Down' was given its spotlight with the singer going within herself to get into character. Nothing else to say but how amazing the show was. A magnificent event that doesn't come along often especially somewhere such as Hackney. If you missed it missed out.
