What was your gateway into RP stuff? Nothing I've ever given much thought to trying... and yet, I'm curious.

When I was a kid, I was into Habbo Hotel and Gaia Online. Habbo led to Gaia which led me to the idea of posting on forums. Neopets adjacent, I guess - that was never my thing but I imagine some of those people might’ve had a similar enough experience to what I had. They had RP sections on their boards - stuff you could apply to and write post-by-post. Mostly fandom related, but you also had stuff like “apply to my boarding school RP! War roleplay!” I did this for a while, dabbling in MMO roleplay along the same while. Heaps and heaps of now-dead social MMOs. Sure, you got stuff like IMVU, but does anyone remember ‘There’?

You had to keep it clean - those were the rules. No cybering allowed, chump. People did it anyway. There’d be occasional ban waves of people foolish enough to do it openly, whether that was from forum advertisements or, in Gaia’s case, using their worldspaces like ‘towns’ which were monitored a lot heavier than PMs, but it was still always there.. at one point Gaia attempted to directly market to this potential audience with an attempted ADULT version of Gaia Online called ‘tentacl’ - it went offline after a year or so. Anyway - eventually, you would heard whispers and fearful rumblings about this /after dark/ lawless place where you could write anything you goddamn pleased, TOS be damned. Sometimes people would get banned just mentioning it in public. It was called F-List, and it was basically just another forum and IRC client but 🔞 and with a kink favorability organizer, and there was/is a constant war fought on whether that F stood for fetish or furry (even though I’m pretty sure the site owners were like ‘yeah it’s furry-list’ I mean cmon be realistic here.) Abominable place. But you could write /sex/ there and you wouldn’t even get banned for it! Such tantalizing freedom.. that many, of course, flocked to and lied about their age to sign up on. Definitely not me. This is not an admission of guilt of something I did years and years ago.

I know a lot of people who got their start through WoW, Second Life, Livejournal, or leapfrogged from writing fic to writing things on the side with their friends - AIM messenger, Yahoo messenger, Skype, now Discord - or more specific forums, like Court Records for Ace Attorney (my old home…) but that was my little path. Tabletop was a pretty recent step in the journey for me, all things considered

I'll complain about habbo hotel another second then i'll move on (until it annoys me again) but i'm baffled how you can not try at all to write an aspec character and yet everyone loses their minds for him, like as if he genuinely was good representation.

I know some people would yell at me and tell me 'HE IS!!' and maybe he is to you because you like the character, but like he is not... objectively good representation. I'm not talking about him being evil (although, that's another subject...), i'm talking about how from what i have seen the show doesn't try to present his aspec identity at all, other than like one comment (and only about his asexuality not his aromanticism). Truthfully that man is practically a 'confirmed outside the show' character. People only lose their mind about him being an aroace icon because they like habbo hotel and they like the red edgy guy, and only because of that he is an aroace icon. Not because he is good representacion, it's just because a popular guy just happens to be confirmed aroace without showing his aroace identity at all.

I'd just roll my eyes at this and move on, but this man has become inescapable if you are aspec. I have never seen this happen with ANY aspec character, not even lily from theowlhouse, another very popular show. This man is just everywhere in aspec tags, people constantly post about him, to praise or to complain it doesn't matter anymore, people post about him being aroace over and over again. And for what. For a nothing representation. I know characters that i headcanon as aspec that have more on screen proof to be possibly aspec than arguably the most popular confirmed to be aroace character of the moment.

I barely see fans of him point out 'man i wish they wrote this better, i wish they were more upfront about it, we deserve better representation' but no i just see praise after praise, like this character invented being aroace, he just didn't show it in the show he is in

And like, there is a lot of aphobia surrounding how fans treat the character? Absolutely (but also what do you expect from fans of a deeply offensive edgy humor southpark like show). But also like, if the show bothered at all to give his identity the bare minimum to shine, i'm sure at least some people would understand better. Also there is people that don't participate in fandoms and just watch shows casually, do you think these people would know that this man is actually aroace just by watching the show? I really doubt it, maybe they would get he is ace, but not aro.

And all of this just for this guy, a nothing representation. We have complained about how we deserve on-screen representation, we deserve actual stories about us, we deserve to be a big focus on a story. But all of this is just patting writers in the head and telling them it's okay if you give us absolutely nothing or maybe crumbs, we'd be happy with just that! We'll think your character is amazing representation! Thank you for your hard work!

It's so depressing, not only because it's a habbo hotel character, but also how the representation is empty and people lose their minds for it. Not to mention all the actual real and good aspec representation that is out there, all the really good aspec characters, that either get ignored or praised for one second. But i guess those don't matter, because the edgy red guy from habbo hotel is aroace apparently

I used to do group RP’s primarily on Tumblr - I don’t even know if they’re really a thing anymore but in my early days, it was pretty fun and I met some cool people.

Among some of my jobs have been a call center, a pet store, a kindergarten class room, a retail store and a filing job.  My current two jobs are grocery and working at a movie theater.  I hope to someday work at a bookstore.

My favorite candies of all time are those little sour watermelons.  Can’t get enough of those.  I can’t stand those little Werthers candies - they just taste gross to me - I’ve never been big on a lot of ‘caramel’ or ‘butterscotch’ flavors.  The only caramel I like is in Caramilk bars and sometimes, I’m in the mood for butterscotch pudding.

PLATFORMS USED: In the past, I used to use Chatzy fairly often which brings back some memories.  In my early days, I wrote on Bulbagarden and Habbo Hotel.  But right now, my two platforms of choice are mainly Tumblr and Discord.

———  MUSE  PREFERENCE  !

GENDER: I would say male muses, more often than not - I wish I could point to any one concrete reason, but I just don’t resonate with a lot of female muses.  I write maybe one or two on Discord and they’re very infrequent.

LEAST FAVOURITE FACE(S): Dylan Everett - he’s a Canadian actor, who was on shows like Wingin’ It and Degrassi.  I don’t really have an issue with Dylan, moreso that one of my more horrible group experiences involved a particularly nasty mun roleplaying as a character that he played on Degrassi.  His character on the show was heavily speculated to be gay and canonically had depression.  This mun would take these headcanons to extreme, quickly having their muse become extremely attached to any male RP blog that would show them even the slightest hint of attention.  To any other muses, especially female ones - they were extremely nasty and had a habit of picking fights.  They would often treat other female muses in the group as their ‘love rivals’ and would often initiate threads with these muses, usually under the pretense of them hanging out or studying together, only for the thread to quickly spiral into complete insanity when they would begin threatening these female muses and writing their character holding knives to their throats simply for ‘standing in the way’.  OOC, their behavior was also completely wretched and they posted someone’s IP address over a petty dispute over Demi Lovato music.  Definitely ruined the faceclaim for me after that.

MULTI OR SINGLE: Single blog for now - I’ve speculated about doing another blog which is still very much a work in progress but I’m trying to take things slow because good things come to those who wait.  I’m often reluctant to go multi because I usually know Ryuji will win out and I won’t be able to divide attention evenly between the two.

FLUFF: I love it - it’s like a warm hug and just what you need on a crappy or boring day.  I’m always in the mood for fluff.

ANGST: I do love my angst but sometimes angst that’s especially on the heavier side can be difficult for me to focus on.  You ever just get a little too much angst to the point where you want to write happy things instead? That’s me sometimes.  Angst is amazing but you have to be in the right mood or headspace for it.

SMUT: I’ve mentioned before that I’m okay with ‘fade to blacks’ or explicitly mentioning our muses have/had a sexual relationship.  Someone made a good point about focusing on the intimacy and the romance as opposed to just writing porn for the sake of the porn and I agree with that.

PLOT  /  MEMES: Definitely plot OOC but I can wing it as well.  I feel perfectly comfortable with sending people memes and initiating things via memes, though after a certain point, I do hope that will be reciprocated to some degree.  I’m also more than okay with receiving memes - ecstatic even! I’m grateful to every person who sends a meme.

Have any of these people existed on a site besides Cherp before? They act like half the internet isn't anonymous, let alone websites like Omegle and f-list that have existed before it. I'm just confused as to where they got the idea that this is for their safety

Okay so to give you some history of the site and why the rule was instated in the first place. Now, granted, a few of the details might be muddied and messy. But here's the general gist of it;

There was a few instances near the beginning of Cherps history where the site had to go offline so that the feds and team could scope through the code, after it was revealed that a minor was roleplaying nsfw content with an adult and they'd moved off site. After this happened a few times, they banned minors from the site altogether (this, in my opinion, was a good call, especially after getting multiple modding experiences under my belt keeping minors in your spaces is just asking for more trouble then it's worth) and said that people couldn't contact one another off site because so long as you're on the site, the bracket 18+ anonymous rule protects you from any liability that comes if a minor (inevitably) does slip in through the cracks.

While omegle and flist are good comparisons, I think a better comparison is probably sites like roled (who, rest in peace, is having trouble gaining traction. It's a good site, similiar concepts to cherp, with more lax rules regarding outside connections. I know the owner/team poke their nose in the tag, so maybe they have something more concrete to offer regarding laws surrounding 18+ websites and similiar situations) and mxrp. Neither of home, to my knowledge(?) Have rules regarding offsite connections. Now granted, this might have changed for mxrp, given that it's been through more drama in its lifetime then I have time to document and also are pretty tight knit with the cherp staff these days but digressions.

Though flist is also a good comparison, given that it's an 18+ roleplay site that started as a hobiest website that allows outside connections.

I've made this comparison before, but the only mainstream site I can think of with this sort of rule is habbo hotel, and that was a sort of. Like there's a lot to say about habbo hotel, but a bit part of that has to do with the fact that when you make your main social group on a site where you can't go offsite to talk, you're pressured into doing things that will make you more popular in that sites social sphere. Ie, inevitably spending money on the site to get better stuff, and look cooler.

I. Do not think that is what's happening here. I genuinely think that it's something that the mods just do not want to deal with, despite the way it evidentially inconveniences them (with the verification system) to find an alternative.

But you have to remember. A lot of the people on cherp are left over from those on cherubplay, as I mentioned earlier. And if we look at the state of the Homestuck fandom now, a lot of people that are still in it and attracted to it are so tail whipped by what pumpkin that it's laughable. So if mods are telling them that this is the only way to protect them, then so be it, and anyone that questions that is ungrateful to the time and energy the mod team has put into maintaining this site (because, you know. You can't both criticize someone and appreciate the work they put into things).

I think another good comparison is the nuzlocke forums. Which, unlike the other aforementioned sites is not 18+ but does host mature (not sexual) content under a 13+ rating. I've talked a little about my experiences being on staff team there, and I'm still wary to do so. But for all the shit I give it, I know for a fact the people keeping it up are all hobiest that deal with a shit load of stress and a thankless userbase. Like. Most roleplay and forum sites are hobiest sites, held up by the backbone of people that are passionate about what they do. None of them prevent offsite interaction because it's a Ludacris rule to uphold in the age of modern technology.

It's a little silly, in any other circumstance. I think.

Edit; I lied. The other times I can remember rules like this popping up are old school fanfiction archives that would lock their porn behind verification. But then people that thought that too much trouble went off and created their own websites. Because you could just do that back then. And many of them stayed up for long periods of time, until websites like ao3 and fanfiction dominated the market. But that's entirely a tangent for a different day.

IMVU, habbo hotel, club penguin, gaia online, 4kids tv (forums and games and chatrooms to talk to your fave "characters"), and I'm probably missing loads and loads more.

social media in the age of web 2.0 has honestly eroded a lot of the joy and safety we used to feel when it came to being on the internet and hanging out here and that's a fucking tragedy. like i even remember having fun on FACEBOOK, because part of the reason i joined was for all the games!! do you hear about games on facebook that are genuinely fun anymore?

i miss the internet of my childhood. sure, some of it is nostalgia, but i think it really was a lot freer. it had more of a wild west feel. and now it's been soul suckingly corporatized.

(edited to add: i realise that right, kids now have apps and stuff too to play on -- tho the ones we had back in the day were often just. buy this thing and play it. pay $1 for this and play forever. cute skins or new background music. the gacha stuff has really ruined mobile gaming.

but ANYWAY. a large portion of the games and internet spaces i mentioned weren't monetised, or heavily so. neopets ran on ads mostly and some people paid a premium subscription. webkinz just required a once yearly purchase of roughly $10usd or so. a lot of others were free and you could pay for convenience. and still others -- especially ones based off of existing franchises like all the tv network websites and toy company websites -- were just completely free. they assumed the engagement with their branded games was advertising in itself -- and it kinda was. but none of it was gated behind money.

if you were a poor kid but found your way to a computer with internet -- say, in a library -- you could just play those games all day and never spend a cent or even feel the need to. and they weren't tracking your data and selling it and bombarding you with 30 second ad breaks etc. and that's not really the case anymore.)

The concepts of NSFW is being cleared of the Internet under the false pretense of children’s safety when it’s really about the people in power sanitising for advertisers and pushing evangelical narratives AND that not enough is done to keep legitimately harmful content off of spaces that minors have access to are ideas that can coexist
