Sadie Adler - I have the feeling that sadie would be an absolute unit in badminton , idfk why I just get that vibe from her , she has a MEAN backhand and is insanely good at smashing. ( off topic i need her to yell at me during a match )

Tilly Jackson - next to sadie i just get the feeling that tilly jackson would make a meaaan badminton player , i feel like she would play more on tactics , she somehow still looks flawless after every match too.

Lenny Summers - i feel like he would get into it as a casual hobby but somehow get super good at it , like tilly i feel like he'd play more on tactics , if you ever give him a smash though he's returning it 3x as hard .

Javier Escuella - i have the feeling he wouldnt be as good at serving but when it comes to his strikes ??? he's so good it's sort of scary. sometimes he gets hits in that you don't even think possible but he pulls it off anyway and it leaves u confused

Charles Smith - Charles would be a more casual player but if u challenge him ?? hes locking tf in , i feel like he'd make a MEAAAAN defense, he'd make a good teacher though.

Abigail Roberts - Abigail wouldn't have that much time to play badminton cause of Jack but if u ever challenged her/teamed up with her she'd be another great defense .

Karen Jones - i get the feeling that Karen wouldn't play as much but when she does every single one of her serves would be so flawless and hard for u to hit , they never land outside too, its always far enough from u to not be able to hit and close enough to not land outside .

Micah Bell - i'm ashamed to say it but i get the feeling that when he wants to be micah would be an absolute offensive unit , his only flaw being sometimes he hits too hard and lands outside .

Mary-Beth - Mary-Beth would be more of a casual player i believe , i get the feeling she'd be an amazing teammate to have though , she always comes in clutch .

Hosea Matthews - another casual player , i feel like hosea would only play if it was a casual back and forth , he usually only plays drives or lobs ... he's too old to play a fast game .

Molly O'shea - another casual player , molly would prefer to just watch but she's good enough to play a casual round or 2 , her weakness is back hands though ...

Arthur Morgan - i feel like arthur wouldn't be too interested in badminton ... he doesn't like moving too fast but i do feel like he'd like playing defensive every now and then .

Sean Mcguire - he'd only play with lenny cause when he's not he's missing every shot , he'd hit a shot or too but it either hits the outline of the racket and doesn't land past the net , it hits too hard and lands outside , or it just lands outside of the court completely .

Keiran Duffy - i feel like he'd see how fast the game goes and just chicken out ... if u offered him a casual back and forth tho i feel like he'd go for it ... just don't expect him to hit all his shots .

John Marston - He's doing so much yet nothing at the same damn time , he's shuffling all around the court doing useless turns , he jumps high as hell just to miss the shuttlecock entirely .

Dutch van der linde - he either doesn't gaf or he's taking it too seriously , when he does , he turns red and there's veins bulging out of his forehead , if he misses a shot he yells as if it was your fault , if you hit a strike he wasn't expecting u to he's too angry to hit it back , he's making new rules up out of thin air , if he serves and it lands outside he's gonna gaslight u into thinking it counts as his point .

Josiah Trelawny - he doesn't like how sweaty it makes him , that and he doesn't realize it's a game where u have to actively move , he just stands still in one place and waits for your serve to reach him . he says he's not missing his shots just that your serves are bad .

Reverend Swanson - he would not like how fast the game goes , he hits a shot then sees how fast it's returned and can't register it fast enough to hit it back . he can't handle fast paced games .

Simon Pearson - he gets super sweaty super quick so he wouldn't want to play , he'd be very enthusiastic abt it though even though he's not all that good at it ...

Susan Grimshaw - she wouldn't opt to play cause she doesn't like how much u have to move around , like hosea she likes a slow back and forth though , she still misses most of her shots sadly .

Bill Williamson - he's missing all his shots entirely and smashing his racket which leaves a huge dent so he can't even play anymore .

Uncle - he played once . ONE TIME . and he accidentally let go of the racket trying to serve and it flew and hit John in the face .

Strauss - he's sitting on the sidelines critiquing everyones every move ( he can't play for shit but he doesn't wanna talk abt that )

Jack Marston - he just wants to watch . trust he will be rooting for his momma when she plays though .

HAAIII HELLO HAAIII IT IS BAT-NONNIE !!! I WAS NOT EXPECTING TO BE SENDING ANOTHER ASK AGAIN SO SOON ,, HOWEVER IN THE SHORT TIME SINCE YOU’VE RESPONDED TO THE LAST ONE , I’VE BEEN DOING SOME PONDERING AND RAISE THE QUESTION . . . ( this is a long one , so apologies in advance )

WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE FOR THE THEORIES THAT DR. SPRAT IS THE SUBSTITUTE AND DR. SPRAT IS PYTHAGORAS TO *BOTH* BE TRUE ?

JUST HEAR ME OUT !!!

The Substitute was first mentioned again in episode 1 of the new season, quite early actually, with Ryan later very confident that the Substitute is dead and that he killed him, despite having never seen him after the defenestration — which we all know , because of the history lesson , that people have survived before !! — and I also feel as though having a full-on clip replay of the aforementioned defenestration was a bit too.. I don’t know, purposeful? Like, we’ve all seen the episode, and they’ve never done that kind of a flashback thing prior to then, so why have it so much in our face now?

Not only that, but there’s been a lot of parallels and references (in my mind, at least) to season 5. Questioning the true nature of someone thought to be known, warnings written on whiteboards (notably on Ryan’s whiteboard, which brings to mind the warning that he had written on it way back during the cloud song, with a similar message, along with others), the strange replacement of the History Wizard prize (one could argue that it isn’t too wild for them to replace the prize item for a season again, like they did in season 6, but I feel like baseball caps and pills with a secret, darker meaning/reality to them are two very, very different things, especially considering how Aria criticized Ryan for “getting high” last time and how Ryan has grown to become addicted to the Phorgedytol), specific references to how Ryan had killed the Professor (see the Professor recounting the whole ass process in the most recent episode), Estranged Producer Shane Madej’s relationship to Connie (and referring to him as such, when others don’t), and so on.

When it comes to the theory of Dr. Sprat being Pythagoras coexisting with the theory of Dr. Sprat being the Substitute, I see the former being true, but in a metaphorical sense.

Something I can’t help but wonder about all of the Substitute mentions and theories is this; why would he give up the goal of becoming corporeal? Not only that, but I’d imagine he would want to become corporeal even *more* now, considering how very close he was to achieving it beforehand. Do I believe that the Substitute is affiliated with the Genie in a partnership? No, not particularly, *however* the Substitute was like a foil to the Professor, and given how the Genie had technically teamed up with Ryan, the Devil, and Asmodeous to plot against the Professor, is it so out of the question for the Substitute to take inspiration from the Genie (he was planning on summoning him after all, meanwhile the Professor HATED the guy and would prefer to avoid him) and team up with Dr. Sprat and Elmer Walter Williams in a similar scheme (“let me make some calls to make sure this won’t fully kill you”)?

I imagine that after the defenestration, the Substitute would accept that it may have been a *little* ambitious to take on a man so many times his size, so in order to become corporeal, he should pick on someone his own size, which brings me to Dr. Sprat. When we see Dr. Sprat next to Ryan, he only appears to be slightly taller than the chairs that Ryan and the special guest sit in, making him about twice the size of the Substitute (based on how tall he seems when running up to Ryan during their fight). That’s a much easier size to work with, isn’t it? Might not even need to make a stovepipe hat OR a flowing cape!

I haven’t figured out all the details as to how it actually happens and it’s late as hell when I’m typing this, but something something, the Substitute is able to become corporeal by using Dr. Sprat as his skin suit. The theory of Dr. Sprat being the Substitute, to me, also ties back to Dr. Sprat being Pythagoras in a metaphorical sense, with the “They tried to kill Pythagoras but their heinous act was all for naught” being reminiscent of how Ryan had “killed him” by throwing him out the window, even though Ryan himself should also know that defenestration isn’t a guarantee of death, so it was for nothing.

That and “math will never die,” relating to the Substitute being a hologram, consisting of code and likely being unable to die in the same way (if at all) flesh would’ve. Additionally, the Substitute living a new life using Dr. Sprat’s body could be his idea, or version, of the many times repeated reincarnation of Pythagoras, and I mean… if he could be weirdly hired by Estranged Producer Shane Madej once, surely he can be twice, right..?

I also find it very interesting how Dr. Sprat has such a connection to purgatory, the same place where the Substitute came to be, and could thus hypothetically find his way back to (there *is* the god phone and God, who really doesn’t pay attention to much but *is* partly in charge of purgatory, may not notice the difference between his personal friend Connie speaking to him and the Substitute speaking to him), if he had been spending the 544 (?) days before the season 7 premiere doing anything at all.

Do I think the Substitute wants to return to the Wondrium Arena? No, I don’t, but if he can figure out a way there, what’s stopping him from sending others on their way? The Substitute *does* see the puppets in a negative/derogatory fashion, so what’s stopping him from sending them there with the shared knowledge that “time, space, and the entire universe comes unraveled by [their] volatile existence”? And why would “Dr. Sprat, Department of Puppet Safety” encourage such a mindset, wouldn’t it be harmful to the puppets?

Additionally, Dr. Sprat seems to be closely tied to the “Retirement Machine,” which frankly just brings to mind @/mothyknowtheartist’s few comics regarding the Substitute and the Complex Victory Algorithm (though I admittedly have not seen all the parts of the comic).

As interesting it is, I struggle to imagine Puppet History having someone as a full-on reincarnation of a real-life person. Having some strange kind of history or relation to them, sure, that’s totally the kind of weird mid-episode lore that the Professor would drop and then never bring up again, but like actually being them? I’m not too sure, but symbolism? Might be more likely than we think.

I haven’t a clue how coherent any of this is and I have just spent the past hour and a half or so thinking of this on the spot, but I am yet to sleep on it, so yours truly is off to slumber, more than likely! Hopefully my insane, probably sleep-deprived ramblings were entertaining in some way or another, have a lovely day!! ^_^

Ouuuuuu this is really interesting!!! You did a really good job pointing out the links between S5 with S7, and I definitely agree that the Substitute will play a larger role either in the end of S7 or in S8. The emphasis placed on him in S7E1 (which turned out to be SO MUCH MORE significant than we initially realized with how much it foreshadowed later plot points like Dr. Sprat's connection to Pythagoras and EP!Shane's death) cannot just be thrown in there as a callback. I fully believe he will return, but the form he will return in is up in the air.

Your proposal of Dr. Sprat's connection being more metaphorical than literal and instead alluding to the Substitute's return in a new form is REALLY compelling to me and honestly a genius way to bring back the Substitute. I really adore your explanations too. They're so well-thought-out, and I can really see the show going this route! I don't have anything else to add, this is just chef's kiss!!!

I will say this does bring up a question: Who was Dr. Sprat before the Substitute took over his body in this scenario? Was he already existing as a puppet? If so, this confirms the existence of other puppets that are like the Professor, and therefore, the explanation that puppets are ruining time, space and the universe is proven false, making their sentence to Purgatory all the more horrifying.

(Honestly though, this is more of an exercise in thought more than anything. I don't really expect an answer from the show itself, just some food for thought!)

Overall, really interesting theory! I'm lowkey rooting for this theory to turn out to be true, but no matter what happens, these last two episodes will be nothing short of a wild ride. I hope you're sleeping well by the way, Bat Nonnie :]🫶🏽
