To Make or Break a Toppat
"They say the first 5 years either make or break a Toppat. I've also heard many of the previous leaders say the first 5 years as an elite was harder than their first year of leadership, so I can't help but wonder what they'd say to you?"
Mr Macbeth glanced at his unwanted company, "What do ya want?"
Hōkū, Head of the Oceania Division, came to a stop by the railings Macbeth had been stood looking out from. With one hand, he created a small cluster of stars that illuminated the surrounding air with a dim glow. It was enough to see the other clearly, but not enough to cast light into the piercing darkness of native bush which surrounded this division's main outpost.
"Do you always assume someone wants something from you every time you're approached?" Hōkū mused.
Macbeth glared back coldly, not in the mood to talk, never mind with this guy. "No one comes ta me if they don't want nothin', so spit it out already."
"So you assume the same for that young Sweede you look after-"
"If you don't want nothin', fuck off!"
"Right here and now, you are NOT an elite with the privilege to speak to me like that! You are in my division, under my command, as a regular member of this Clan," Hoku's voice boomed across the quiet valley, the light of his stars flickering. "I have every right for that alone to inform Copperbottom there is no hope for you, and to dismiss you from the Toppat clan! Furthermore, I was under the assumption Smith taught you better than that."
Mr Macbeth shrunk into himself, face flushed, head lowered.
"That's what I thought."
Hōkū leaned on the railing, looking outwards. "As I said, you are a member of my division for the next 3 months, and I intend to treat you as one, our past differences aside. So, I would suggest you accustom yourself with being visited without having to provide something in return, because this will be a regular occurrence between you and I from here on forth."
"..."
"My point earlier was you've had significant pressure put on your shoulders since stepping foot in the clan. I know Wilford was always a believer in pressure, pushing people to step up to the mark, but I can't help but think that has caused more harm than good in your case. Suave could certainly see that, and perhaps that was his real reasons for targeted you. You were the least qualified for that position, myself and the other elites could see clearly, all it was doing was breaking you further, and based on the incident 2 weeks ago, I would say the damage has been done."
"... You done rubbing in my mistakes?"
Hōkū smiled softly, "Everyone makes mistakes, Mr Macbeth. What matters is how we choose to proceed after making them. Here."
Hōkū took one of the stars, moving it into Macbeth's hand.
"A star?"
"I've heard from other, my abilities have a calming effect. Perhaps it will help you sleep? I imagine you need it." Hōkū patted Macbeth on the shoulder, "I will see you tomorrow."
He paused mid-step, "Oh, and I have some advice for you."
Macbeth raised a brow, looking up from the small star.
"A true coward is the one who chooses to start the fight; Walk away."

keeeyframes name analysis time:p tune in folks
Elio is originally Italian, meaning sun and deriving from the latin word Helius and that’s taken from the name of the greek god of the sun, Helios. It’s also said to be another form of Aelius, a roman family name that’s derived from Helios. It’s worth also noting that the family name Aelius is from Hadrian Aelius, one of the five good emperors of Rome. He was known for bringing peace, prosperity, and stability during his rule.
Percy explains this in the extra fries moment but Elio and all his siblings are named after celestial bodies.
ELIO: Mm. It's Hina, Hoku, me, Cael and Lyra.
ELIO: And thennnn, Cass is our littlest sister.
PERCY: They're named after heavenly bodies, like a big boxed set.
ELIO: Hah, okay. Hina's from mahina, and the Hoku's- or, well, hōkū means star. They were gonna name me La, for the sun, but they switched it to Elio.
PERCY: Cael, Lyra, and Cass are all named after constellations.
I won't go too much into his siblings names obviously, but if anyone's curious; Mahina is the goddess of the moon in Hawalian mythology, Hoku means star as stated, Cael's name is from the constellation Caelum, Lyra's from the constellation Lyra, and Cass's name (presumably) is after Cassiopeia.
Now, Elio mentioned his parents almost named him La. Like Elio said La means sun in Hawaiian, but it also means day in Hawaiian. There isn't much to go into here but either way Elio was always going to be named after the sun.
Elio’s name is pretty straightforward, meaning sun. The sun is inherently selfless. The sun gives earth warmth and light, it gives the earth light. Elio himself is selfless. He isn’t completely selfless, of course, that’s expected, but he is inherently kind. During the festival he’s fine with not doing something he’s excited about to make others happy. Elio is very much filled with life and vitality like the sun. During solo events with the other boys they are relatively more mellow than when they’re with him.
Kealoha as a whole means the loved one, or beloved. Ke meaning 'the' in Hawaiian and 'aloha' being the word for love. It might be worth mentioning that 'loha' is also a word in Hawaiian that means wilting or drooping, spiritless, and inferior.
Perseus is derived from the greek word 'pertho' meaning to destroy. Perseus is a prominent figure in greek mythology. He was born to Zeus and Danaë, but it was prophecised by an oracle that he would kill his grandfather and Perseus and his mother were banished to an island. I do think there's something to be said about the comparison of Percy being born in Japan and later moving to Hawaii, an island, with his father. The name Percy by itself comes from old french, meaning to pierce, break through.
In Tozaki, the first kanji is '戸' which means door. The second kanji is '崎' which means promontory, cape, or spit. Promontories are an area of lifted land in a body of water. Commonly they were used to build castles of forts on. His last name doesn't give me a lot to work with, but I do think there's something about a fort on a promontory being surrounded by water and trapping you to some extent and Percy's seeming need to be moving or doing something at all times. Whether it's something small about needing to get out of the study room in the study moment or something big like moving from Japan, to Hawail, to New york. The door meaning in the first kanji could also be a metaphor for Percy’s closed off avoidant nature.
Jamie started as a diminutive from James and sometimes Jacob, though I don't think that's the case with Jamie's name. I think if his name was James or Jacob, he would just go by that. Despite this, Jamie doesn't really have a meaning on it's own so I'll be examining the meanings James and Jacob, though they overlap a lot in meaning.
Jacob and James both mean holder of the heel or supplanter. A supplanter is someone who takes the place of another, usually steathily; for example, usurping a throne. Now, I do think this can relate to Jamie due to him being an international student. How he doesn't take the place of another, but he does move to the college and it's clear from his demeanor that he would rather have a quiet college experience. In the study event he even hides in a stall at the craft to get away from his groupies.
Porter has two meanings. It can be derived from both french words portier and porteour. Portier means doorkeeper or gatekeeper. Porteour means to carry. I'm going to be focusing more on the meaning from portier. Gatekeeping is the act of restricting something, or someone from a community. Jamie obviously isn't an open person. He's very impersonal around strangers who know who he is. In the game when MC is unaware of who Jamie is, Jamie is arguably more himself than he is after he's aware they know. It’s perfectly reasonable for him to be rude to the people around campus that talk about him the way they do, but he isn’t. He doesn’t want to show them any part of himself. Looking at his interactions with them he isn’t nice, only cordial. This could be seen as Jamie gatekeeping himself from other people.

About
Kelsea Armstrong (they/she) is a multi-faceted creative based in Hawaiʻi with a background in traditional jazz, rnb/soul, reggae and beyond. With experience as the premier vocalist for critically acclaimed groups like Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning Honolulu Jazz Quartet and the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa jazz ensemble, Armstrong has left an indelible mark on the local jazz scene. Their performances have extended to prestigious platforms including Blue Note Hawaii and the state art museum's jazz and cultural events at Capitol Modern.
Beyond the realm of jazz, Armstrong has worked as the resident hook singer in a hip-hop/neo soul freestyle jam alongside some of Hawaiʻis finest emcee’s and jazz musicians. Their freestyle performances have also been featured in toasting sessions of Honolulu’s underground Rub-a-Dub parties.
As a songwriter, Armstrong has showcased an extensive catalog of unreleased music on KTUH’s college radio live music segment "Monday Night Live", opened for local bands like Ragamuffs and The Mauve, frequented the iconic stage of Blue Note with her own compositions and arrangements, and performed other various live events that highlight original music and songwriting. In 2023, Armstrong released music on Nick Kurosawa and Ohtoro' project, "UniVibes" in collaboration with several esteemed local writers and producers of the Honolulu scene which is currently nominated for Nā Hōkū Hanohano R&B album of the year.
Now, Armstrong is brewing a self-produced recording project with plans to release later this year. The project is a highly anticipated endeavor that promises a balance of their live music background and production informed by their vinyl curations.

Hōkū Cody began journeying to the islands of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in 2013. [...] Cody is part of a cultural working group that advocates on behalf of Native Hawaiians in Papahānaumokuākea, which encompasses the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. After over a century of militarization and destructive colonial projects in the region, beginning with James Cook’s arrival on the main islands in 1778, a crucial avenue of that reclamation is researching and creating Hawaiian names that were lost during this period of Western encroachment.
“For us in Hawai‘i, a name is everything,” says Cody. A name says that you’ve acknowledged that existence and that life.”
This past December [2020], that acknowledgement was extended to four species of seabirds -- the last of the 21 seabirds in Papahānaumokuākea to receive a Hawaiian name. “They are Hawaiian birds, they should have a Hawaiian name,” says Cody. [...]
The names were developed through the cultural working group’s nomenclature subcommittee, which since 2012 has brought together an array of experts, including cultural practitioners, scholars, resource managers, and scientists.
Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele, an esteemed kūpuna, or elder, helped guide the group. “When we got stuck,” says Cody, “she flipped us on our head and asked us a different question in a different way, and helped us move along in the thought process.” Kanahele, otherwise known as Aunty Pua, is a key figure for Papahānaumokuākea; in 2007, she developed the monument’s name.
-------
When renaming the Bonin petrel, Cody drew on her own experiences in the field, where she witnessed the sky blacken with the swarming birds as they returned to the islands to breed. Her account of their epic congregations led the group to the word nunulu, a Hawaiian word meaning growling, warbling, or reverberating.
Another committee member, Noah Gomes, called on his expertise researching historical Hawaiian texts and taxonomic systems; in 2017, he uncovered the name of an endemic songbird, ‘alawī, which had been lost for over a century. In similar fashion, Gomes, a research consultant for the Kamehameha Schools of Hawai‘i, located the traditional name for the Tristram’s storm petrel -- ʻakihikeʻehiʻale -- in a Hawaiian scholarly text published in 1860. [...]
Unlike its English counterpart, named after a British ornithologist, ʻakihikeʻehiʻale translates to “the bird that steps on water” and alludes to how the bird patters its feet on the ocean’s surface as it feeds. Gomes says Hawaiian names often convey information about a species, while Hawaiian taxonomic systems can impart how birds have been traditionally perceived. [...]
For the Christmas shearwater, the group chose the onomatopoeic ʻaoʻū to evoke the bird’s nocturnal flight call.
Notably, the blue-gray noddy was given two names: hinaokū and manuohina. In Hawaiian, a species can have multiple names to correspond, for instance, with stages of growth or behavioral differences, says Cody. For the blue-gray noddy, the group settled on two names to collectively encompass the bird’s full suite of characteristics, from its gray color (hina) to the fact that it forages close to shore.
-------
While the era of exploitation in the archipelago has passed, sea-level rise remains a critical threat to the islands’ seabirds. Most of the land in Papahānaumokuākea rises less than two meters above water, and two of the newly named species, the nunulu and ʻakihikeʻehiʻale, are especially vulnerable. [...]
“When you speak of that bird now, you’re going to speak of the multitudes and you’re going to give it that power,” says Cody. [...]
“It is because of endangerment of our language that we have taken action to bring our language back to life,” says Larry Kimura, a Hawaiian language and Hawaiian studies expert at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo. He says it’s very encouraging to see the cultural working group’s effort to rename plants and animals in the archipelago. “It’s important that we have Hawaiian names that we can bring back to life [...].”

The Pleiades, an open star cluster in the shoulder of the constellation Taurus, is known to the kilo hōkū, the Hawaiian astronomer, by several names: Ka Huihui a Makali`i (The cluster of Makali`i), Huihui kōkō a Makali`i Kau i Luna (The Net Cluster of Makali`i Hung Above), Nā Kā a Makali`i (The Bailer of Makali`i), Nā kōkō a Makali`i (The Net of Makali`i), Nā Wahine a Makali`i (The Wives of Makali`i), Ke Aweawe Makali`i (The Makali`i Stars Stuck Together), Ka Lālani a Makali`i (The Makali`i Line), Huihui (Cluster, Group), and Kūpuku (Clustered).
In some traditions, the Pleiades is also called Makali`i, but there are also traditions which give that name to Aldebaran. What does such an abundance of names tell us? First, it tells us that the star, planet, or group of stars is very important to a lot of people. The Pleiades is important to the traveler as a navigational feature. The variety of names indicates, I believe, the altitude and angle of the cluster, critical information to a navigator.
One translation for Makali`i is “Eyes of the Chief,” and that was the name of the head navigator of Hawai`iloa, a great voyaging chief. If we look at the cluster when it is first rising above the horizon, it could look a bit like a woman standing upright. Or, perhaps it is a group of women, Nā Wahine a Makali`i. In either case, soon the sail of the husband’s canoe comes into sight, and Makali`i (Aldebaran), the navigator, sails into view. What better reason to journey forth than to find a wife? As the cluster rises overhead, the stars begin to look like a bailer, an important commodity, indeed, for those who spend their lives on the sea. In fact, a number of Polynesian legends center on magical women who take the form of a beautifully carved bailer floating in the ocean. Caught and courted by the right man, the bailer becomes a beautiful woman who agrees to marry him. And so the Makali`i line continues down to the sea. Makali`i and his wives rise a bit north of due east, and pass directly overhead on their way to the sea, where they will set to the south of due west.
For the traditional farmer, on the Island of Hawai`i, the November 17 rising of the Pleiades marks the approximate start of the rainy season. Makali`i was not only a great navigator and steersman, but also an agronomist, an expert farmer. Indeed, we find that around the world, the Pleides is associated with farming. In Hawai`i, the evening rising of those stars is associated with the return of the all-important rainy season.
Other chiefs also have had the name “Makali`i. Among them is the father of Kamapua`a, the pig demi-god, also associated with rain and fertility. At the other end of the spectrum is a greedy Chief Makali`i, who figures in a story from the Kona coast of Hawai`i Island. In this story, Makali`i is translated as “tiny eyes,” a euphamism for “greedy,” and refers to a greedy chief who taxed the people into poverty during a drought. In this story, `Iole, the Hawaiian rat, saved the people from starvation by chewing through Huihui kōkō a Makali`i Kau i Luna. The net burst open, and all the food which the evil Chief Makali`i had placed in it fell back to earth.
Hidden within this story may be a record of the extreme El Nino conditions of 1640. But whatever historical events may be encoded into the story, for myself, when the net hangs over the western sea, I enjoy thinking of Aldeberan as the right ear of `Iole, ε Tauri as his left ear, θ1 and δ his eyes, and γ Tauri his pointy little nose. His body is to my left, and Orion’s bow makes his tail. If I look closely at the Pleiades, which `Iole also is eyeing, I see where our heroic little rat bit through the net so the food could fall to earth and feed all the people there.

2005 Toppat Clan Elites Reference
Leader - Terrence Suave (Age 38) -> Current leader of the Toppat Clan. He's starting to regret his choice of Right Hand.
Right Hand - Reginald Copperbottom (Age 24) -> The clan's youngest Right Hand, and son of the former one. He's not been very impressed by the actions of the clan's new leader.
Head of the Airship Division - Apple Seed (Age 32) -> It takes 185 apple seeds to kill an adult. In the Toppat Clan's Airship division, it only takes one.
Head of the American Division - Danny Danger (Age 29) -> Farther like son, a born leader and jerk. He doesn't like the new Head of Transportation.
Head of the EU Division - Wilhelm Krighaus (Age 54) -> He's the oldest elite and division head in clan history at 19 years. He's looking forward to retirement.
EU Division - Ahnoldt Schwarz (Age 27) -> The future head of the EU division. He's currently learning the ropes from Wilhelm Krighaus.
Head of the Asian Division - Mr Red (Age 41) -> No one knows his real name, but he always wears red, whether that's his own, or that of his division's enemies.
Head of the Oceniana Division - Hōkū (Age 37) -> A vocal member of the Toppat Clans Manipulator community. He got his name for being there to guide his kind in the dark.
Head of Transportation - Mr Macbeth -> Trained by Tim Smith, he joined as the clan's new Head of Transportation. Despite this, the other elites don't like people who jump the ladder of power.
He doesn't like the Head of the American Division.
Head of Communications - April Mayday -> She's in charge of the major comm line, relaying messages between divisions & clan leader.
Head of Finances - Albert Poshley -> He's a descended of one of the original clan founders, funding the Toppat Clan for generations. Needless to say, he's the unofficial head of finances.
Hello folks, I wanted to get you guys some content since it's been a while since I've had any art or writing. So here's some concept art I needed to make for Ch.10 (I bet you can't guess what that chapter is going to be about).
These turned out really nice, and I love how cute young Ahnoldt looks. I'm also very happy with the colour pallets. I did a bit of experimenting, pushing beyond my normal colour choices, and some of these are REALLY good.
This is 13 years before the events of Lost Children, and I also threw the ages of everyone in there since I figured you guys would find that fun :)
Alrighty, I'm off to write chapter 10. Enjoy.
