So I drew myself as Gwyn, sword and all 🗡 You can find my ep (#42) and all the others over here!

MTG Data Science on twitter posted this app https://mtgds.shinyapps.io/hipster_dragon_highlander/ that lets you calculate “how hipster” your MTG EDH deck is, by adding the % of usage on EDHREC of each card in your deck. It’s quite fun lol. The median deck on EDHREC is like 463% !
I can see with some of my decks that Ashnod, despite being *not that good (but still good)* is a pile of good sac stuff, while Lightpaws is sneakily strong ! (well, sneakily, everybody knows to target her now, but she’s good with underused cards). My fav deck, Syr Gwyn Knights/Equip, is in the middle, quite nice. Love me some knights, can’t wait for Eldraine 2 : Electric Boogaloo!

Going to switch my Mardu “Syr Gwyn” deck to a Mardu “Isshin” deck, focusing on combat triggers. Knights and Samurai together.
Still some equipment for the “Modified” stuff, but I feel Gwyn is to expensive for how I like to run my decks. Isshin more how I like to play.

HERE COMES A SPECIAL BOY
Tumblr media
Name: Gwyn Swiftwing, Keeper of the Amesha’s Light, Herald of the Dragon Tempest.
Color Alignment: White/Green/Blue
Home Plane: Alara, Bant.
First Planeswalk: Tarkir
Sparking: Gwyn is one of the Aven Knights of Eos, When the armies of converging Alara arrived on their doorstep, the Aven Knight scouts were the first line of defense on the front. During a demon’s incursion into Bant from Grixis, Gwyn was among the Knights dispatched with an Amesha angel to harry their approach. They were ambushed, unfortunately, and the fighting went poorly incredibly fast, resulting in the crushing defeat of their squadron. The survivors were in retreat, the Amesha and some of the knights holding a rearguard, when a demonic arrow brought down the angel.
Gwyn dove to help her, and held off the zombies for almost an hour, but the angel was horribly injured, and eventually begged Gwyn to kill her, putting her beyond the reach of the demon and ending her incredible suffering caused by the cursed arrow.
With pain in his heart, Gwyn dropped his broken sword, taking up the angel’s blade. The world around him blurred as he drove the blade into the angel’s heart, and as a bright light enveloped him he disappeared-
-and appeared in the deserts of Tarkir, radiating divine power and clutching the angel’s bloody sword, shaking with pure sorrow.
Powers: Previously not a mage in any capacity, Gwyn gained the ability to add divine power to his sword, and to heal and bolster allies at a touch. His flight abilities also were enhanced, allowing him to increase his speed in a streak of white light. He also gained the power to smite foes with divine magics.
Due to his abilities’ similarities to the breath weapon of the great dragon Dromoka, the clan adopted him as one of their own, hailing him as a divine emissary from the dragonstorms, a revered blend of Dragon and Aven.

What's happening with MTG?
Well, you all know MTG is an expensive hobbie. I've spent more money than what I ever thought I was going to, and still have lots of cards to buy for my Commander decks. However, as time passes by I have noticed one thing, and it's that MTG is getting more and more expensive after each set, especially since Wizards decided to eliminate the MSRP.
From commanders precons increasing its price, the boosters, inflation, a secondary market filled with "investors" that artificially make cards ridiculously expensive, people netdecking and making cards' prices ridiculous... Every day is harder to get cheap cards.
Now, the Brawl decks are selling on amazon at $185 the set... that's $60 more expensive than what the commander 2019 set was selling in presale. We're talking about cards for standard in decks that contain 40 cards less. That means if you want that, you're paying right now $60 more for 160 cards less, and if you have seen the lists, everything inside the decks except for a few cards each is worth less than $1...
Here is what I found:
Chulane: 10 cards over $1
Syr Gwyn: 11 cards over $1
Korvold: 14 cards over $1
Alela: 12 cards over $1
But what if we rise the bar? We're talking about $47 decks... So, how many cards over $5? (I'm assuming the commanders will be expensive, as I have no prices for them, so I'm including them)
Chulane: 7 cards over $5
Syr Gwyn: 6 cards over $5
Korvold: 5 cards over $5
Alela: 5 cards over $5
And if we see those cards, what do we get?
First, the commanders for which I have no prices.
Then, the obvious shock lands, which if they could print them here gives NO excuse to wizards for not printing them in commander precons...
We also have some cards that appear to have normal.prices, like steelbane hydra for example at $12. We also have ridiculous stuff like Knight's Charge for $30...
Then the ridiculously priced common card that is in every single deck: Arcane Signet at $30... WTF? for $30 I include a mana vault in all my decks instead of this. This price is not just insane, but it also show us something very important, which is basically the point of this whole rant. Who sets this? Because I know it's not wizards, then, who????
I wouldn't be surprised to find out that some of those "investors", who to me are the cancer of this game, are buying all the decks they can just to resell them more expensive and in pieces... I've seen these "investors" with boxes and boxes of especial sets' boxes they buy just to resell at a higher price, to inflate the prices with artificial buyouts...
The worst part of this is that people know about this and still buy from them. I'm sure more than 1 are going to tell me that if I don't have money I shouldnt play magic, but that's not the point.
If it wasn't because of the LGS, I would love that wizards had a store them selves and they sold the singles. It'd make everything accessible to everyone. Fuck MTG finances, fuck the "investors" that give me cancer, and fuck the reserve list.
I know, however, that it won't ever happen. The issues with MTG's prices are beyond that, and a solution to that seems too distant. When Wizards fail miserably at the Mythic Edition with extremely high prices and still sold out, there is not much hope for us.
The collector boosters are around $30/$35 wich seems extremely expensive too. I understand that the contents are kore expensive, but come on, you can't charge 10 times more for that...
But well, that's how Magic seems to work now...
P.S. Curious note:
As I was writing this, Wizards announced that as Brawl decks got out of stock literally everywhere, they are going to reprint more. And guess what? All the prices for the cards that appear only in those deck dissapeared. I can see the prices of each other card in the deck, but the new ones have a blank space instead. Curious right?
