“What the hell was that.”

Gwen, who was in the middle of getting sewn up by an expressionless Otomo, did not have the patience to respond politely.

“I think the words you’re looking for are ‘thanks for saving my life, Gwen’,” she snarled. “And you’re welcome, you bastard.”

“The words I’m looking for are too NC-17 for your teenage ears,” Murdock sneered right back. “I told you to leave.”

Gwen rolled her eyes.

“Oh, was that an order? I thought it was a friendly suggestion.” The pinch of the needle intensified. “Ow!”

Otomo’s eyes flicked up to Gwen.

“I’ll be more careful,” he told her neutrally enough that she was pretty sure he was pissed off too.

Well, of course he was. God forbid she disobey orders, even if they were stupid. Otomo was all about that respecting your superiors crap. That just annoyed Gwen more, though. She’d saved Murdock! They should both be grateful to her! It was just her luck that being a big damn hero only got her scolded like a kid who’d broken curfew. She sat through the remaining five stitches, silent but simmering with resentment.

Once Otomo had finished bandaging her side and stepped away, the hem of Gwen's borrowed shirt fell back down to cover the injury. Like it wasn't even there. The steady flare of pain was pretty good proof that it was, though.

“You’re the one who wants me to fight all the time, but now you’re mad because I did?” she muttered. “How is that fair?”

“I trained you to fight! I didn’t train you to risk your life like an idiot!”

Gwen threw her hands up, then cringed as the movement tugged on her stitches.

“I’m not like you! Trying to save people is what I do! Was I just supposed to leave you to die?”

“Yes!”

That stopped Gwen cold. She swallowed.

“I, what?”

That. That didn’t make any sense. Murdock was a self-serving asshole. But. In what world did him dying serve his own interests? Unless it was just irritation about having to be saved. That, she’d believe.

Murdock took three stomping steps away from her, towards the wall of windows looking out over the city. For a moment she wondered about those windows — what could he sense out of them? Anything? Or did he just have to imagine the city buzzing below? She shook those thoughts off quickly, determined to hold on to her indignation.

“Seriously? You’d rather die than get saved by me? That’s how easily damaged your pride is?”

“You were hurt!” Murdock snapped, whirling around to face her. “You’re my apprentice, Gwendolyn — my charge. And I failed to keep you safe.”

The vicious smile dropped from Gwen’s face. Off to the side, Otomo’s expression was tight and dark in a way that reminded Gwen of her dad — the pain, the guilt in his eyes when she first took off her mask.

That was…

They were worried. They were mad at her because they were worried about her. And she’d just been blowing them off like a jerk. Her neck and ears burned with shame.

“I didn’t…” Gwen sighed, looked away. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t do it again,” Otomo said. “Perhaps this is one lesson you can manage to learn the first time.”

“You—”

“No training for two weeks,” Murdock interrupted. “And you won’t be going out as Spider-Woman either. Otomo, please drive Gwendolyn home and ensure Captain Stacy is made aware of these restrictions.”

And then, like a dismissal, he turned to face the windows again. Gwen watched him as she was herded out the door. He looked powerful towering over the city; imposing, unmovable.

How quickly would he break apart though, she wondered, if she ever told him she’d taken that blow because cared about him too? The door closed between them, and Gwen kept those sentiments tucked behind her tongue.

Running this city isn’t all fun and games, Ms. Stacy, there is actual work involved.” “Yeah, well, you’ve also got an army of ninjas and a month’s notice, so.” Gwen made a sweeping motion. “Clear your schedule.” “You’ve certainly gotten very comfortable making demands, Gwendolyn.” And there he went, doing the Big Bad Kingpin pose, his feet shoulder-width apart and the white cane that also served as a sheath for his katana planted firmly between them. But she wasn’t going to be cowed. “I learned that from you,” she told him, poisonously sweet.

What's your fannish ID?  @gwenpoolsaesthetic on Tumblr, Gwenpools_Aesthetic on AO3, Gwendolyn Poole#7925 on Discord and (in theory) GwenRPoole on Twitter. I say in theory because I just started that account and I follow one person and tweet nothing. Follow me so I can follow you and be inspired to do stuff there!!!!!! My fandom friends call me Gwen. I picked Gwenpool as my muse because her entire deal is that she knows all of the Marvel characters' secrets, and I pride myself on having a vast comic knowledge. I try to work as many random characters into my fics as I can (hopefully in a way that is accessible by someone who hasn't read said comics but is a fun treat for someone who has), because I think the challenge of that is exciting. Plus I love easter eggs, so I enjoy giving them to others as a treat!  

What types of fanworks do you create?  I only create fics. While I am in awe of artists, it's not a skill I have ever developed. I tend to hear stories in my head more than seeing images, so it often feels like my job is just recording the voices that I hear.

What are your favourite types of fanworks, when you're not creating?  I love all kinds of fanart. I've had some art that was created especially for my fics, and that is - in my opinion - the greatest complement I've ever been given.

What do you like in particular about this fandom? Daredevil is the first comic I ever read. I was diagnosed with a visual impairment at age 12 (before then I just thought I had crappy eyesight), and my dad gave me a copy of Frank Miller's Born Again to read. In retrospect, that probably wasn't the best parenting choice, but I was hooked. I read everything there was to read, and branched outwards from there. So I love ANY iteration of Matt I can get my hands on, and I like how many different readings of him there can be. Some of my favorite tropes are Matt getting overwhelmed, Matt describing stuff and, of course, sex god Matt Murdock... I've noticed recently a real push on Tumblr from fans to add Image Descriptions (ID) onto posts with images. Maybe it's just because of the blogs I follow, and I know it's not exclusive, but from my perspective the majority of these additions are coming from people I know to be in the Daredevil fandom. As someone who needs to use these about 25% of the time (or just stay off of social media all together...) I can think of nothing better than this being our fandom's legacy!!!

Do you like participating in fan events? I do! I like making things more than I like getting them, honestly. I always find the focus that's needed to make something extra special for someone else to be an interesting way to push myself. 

What about your creating process? I write when I can. Usually the words come to me when I'm doing something else. If I just sit and stare at the screen, more often than not I get nothing (which means I'm constantly losing sprints!!) Generally I get my best ideas when I'm in the shower. 

Do you interact a lot with other fans?  I interact with a few fans, especially those I beta for, but I'd love to be more involved with the Daredevil community. Some people post comments on all of my fics, and I want to be your friend but I'm SHY!!!!!!! Is there any particular piece you'd like to showcase for this post?  I just completed a piece called "The Place You Need To Reach" for the 2020 Daredevil Exchange (DDE: exchange tag here!). The request was for Comics Peter Quill and NMCU Matt Murdock. I have never read a single Star Lord or Guardians of the Galaxy comic, so doing the research to get Peter's tone right was a lot of fun for me.

Do you have other fandoms you'd like to talk about?  Daredevil is my main fandom, but I find that Clint Barton often works his way into all of my fics, and Hawkeye (both Clint and Kate) is probably my #2 comics fandom. I think I'm drawn to disaster people, and a lot of my fics focus on said disaster people finding each other and trying to figure out a way to take care of each other and, in doing so, take care of themselves.

Is there anything else you want to tell us about yourself? I love connecting with people to talk about fandom in general!! I'm currently working on my PhD looking at adaptations of legacy Marvel characters, but I'm also here to just chat nonsense. I don't know if I have any anti-ships, but my OTP is Stucky and my OT# is Team Red (But I'm not a loyalist. I also like Steve/Sam, Winterhawk, and all sorts of other variations of other Marvel characters.
