[Etude 1] To Honor Raven – Part 3

[Part 1] [Part 2] Brian crept slowly up the hill, shivering from the chill breeze as he started to approach the Jotan camp. The moon, high in the sky, shone brightly as it illuminated the clear night. An owl, perched on a nearby tree, began to hoot as Brian silently moved past. Pausing behind a shrub, he began to analyse the sentry camp before him.

‘There’s only two of them - I should be able to make it past without much trouble.’ He had practiced silently stalking prey with Valgar when they had gone hunting. In his mind, this would be no different. After all, they would not be expecting him to sneak past.

Glancing down, he carefully picked up a nearby rock - measuring the weight in his hands before throwing it down the path he had come from. There was a loud ‘thunk’ as it struck some rocks.

‘Urh?’ a Jotan watchguard grunted in surprise, standing from his hut to squint out in the darkness. Stepping slowly and lightly, Brian crept around and behind the hut - his eyes alternating between the path before him and the Jotan who began to meander down to investigate the noise.

Brian’s heart began to pulse, the thrill of managing to break into the settlement making him more alert to the potential danger. He reached a torch marking the entrance to two different tunnels that bore through the rock, and quickly he hid behind one of the trees.. ‘Now I just need to find that totem.’ He grinned, excited at the prospect of beginning his own legend - knowing that he would soon have an exciting story of his own to share to the Norn. As he looked around he saw that one of the tunnels lead towards a groups of tents. ‘Might as well start with that.’

Carefully he began to enter the tunnel, making sure the torch did not emphasize his shadow as he kept close to the side. The torch flickered in the wind, and Brian spotted something glisten on the ground. It was a large footprint, preserved within the snow as ice - reflecting the light of the torches lighting the tunnel.

Brian frowned curiously as he began to step towards it, figuring the footprint belonged to a Jotan. ‘Damn, that’s a huge footprint! Are there some that are really that big?’

He knelt down, touching the ice-covered print in curiosity. ‘I wonder how th-’ The air around him suddenly became oppressive and heavy, pushing Brian’s shoulders down with a suddenness that he did not expect. Feeling a strange stirring within his chest, Brian immediately raised his head - stumbling back as he met eyes with an enormous Jotan ghost.

“HWAAAARRGGGHH!!” It yelled with an anger which shook Brian to his core, and with it two other ghostly Jotan appeared - one standing by the entrance of the tunnel, the other beside the original ghost.

Brian fumbled as he tried to draw his sword, still reeling from the sudden appearance of the spirits before him. The stirring in his chest, like an itch, was growing - and panic seemed to smother any thought he tried to make.

“CAWWW!”

A huge bulk of feathers suddenly flew by, and with surprise Brian watched as a giant raven creature clawed at the spirits before him, forcing them to move back. The raven turned its head towards Brian, beady eyes staring him down. He wanted to shrink into the ground.

“You should not have come here!”

The voice was cold and and angry, turning back to face the three spirits that started approach once more. Brian could only just recognise Huldra’s voice, and upon realising who it was he quickly drew his sword - no longer paralyzed in shock.

“I’ll help you!”

“No!” she spoke, batting the spirit’s club away with strong talons. “You will return to the camp immediately!”

“Bu-”

“Leave! I will deal with these restless spirits you so carelessly stirred!”

Brian grit his teeth in frustration before running back the way he came, feeling the shame wash through him. He had been so sure that he could be a hero, so certain that he could bring back the totem, and now he was forced to run away like a coward!

He heard distant sounds of shouting, and he realised that the camp was rousing. Shame gave way to dread as he realised the shaman would be alone in the tunnel, potentially facing an angry mob of Jotan.

‘What have I done?!’

He quickly reached the hut he had previously snuck past, halting immediately when he saw the Jotan’s giant bodies strewn across the ground. There was a sound from within the hut, and Brian breathed in relief as he saw Valgar emerge looking at him with concern.

“Sveinulf! Raven’s wings - what were you thinking, coming up here by yourself?”

“Valgar - the shaman is in trouble!” Brian exclaimed, pointing towards the tunnels, ”We have to help her - she’ll be overrun by Jotan! The camp-”

“Is awake,” Valgar interrupted, his voice deep and serious. “I know, Sveinulf. I am here to take you back to our camp before it gets worse.” He stepped over the surrounding corpses, turning as he began to walk. As Brian stepped forward to speak he could see the lethal claw marks that had made them. ‘She... took out all of these Jotan?’ “Huldra is blessed by Raven,” Valgar spoke, watching Brian as he looked back up. “Raven has provided her with all the knowledge she needs. She will be able to handle herself. Now - let us leave this place, and we must be careful not to leave tracks.” Brian could not find it within himself to believe Valgar’s words, but he followed Valgar back to the camp anyway - knowing there was nothing else he could do to help.

under the cut: undersiders as what plant i think they would main/be in pvz garden warfare 1 (+ dressup)

disclaimer i've literally never touched gw2 so if there's a better fit in that game i wouldn't know it.. just gw1 for now..

Decisions are made based more on gameplay than on physical appearance but I tried to take both into account.. however as a sunflower main maybe I'm biased on some account so fellow garden warfare heads feel free to suggest better fits for them

Reading over all these I'm now realizing I kept mixing up what I think they would main vs what plant they would specifically be, which is a little confusing...

TAYLOR

A Peashooter variant feels a very obvious choice for her, since she's pretty much always on the frontlines. Its hyper ability would allow her to jump to higher up places to retain the "watching from afar with bugs" thing

I chose Law Pea more for the justice bit in its stickerbook description (where there is injustice you will find it etc etc) and less for the law bit (though she does have a code of law it's incomprehensible to anyone but herself). It felt more fitting for her because well she does try to work for what she feels is the greater good.

For dressup we're pretty limited here, both because there's not many bug themed accessories and also because I just don't have that many accessories :( I gave her the "heart and arrow + Mom" tattoo, and the visors. Fuuuck now i'm realizing i could have given her actual glasses... Wait no nevermind I'm not sure I have plain glasses. Well anyway those are her glasses.

LISA

She mains boss mode which I feel doesn't require very much explanation

For those unfamiliar: In boss mode you play as Crazy Dave (or Dr. Zomboss), generally out of the heat of the battle but still able to participate with your various abilities. It's mostly a support role, but you can still attack (cherry bomb drops), heal and revive (sunflower + revive drops), and help your team track the locations of the enemy (coconut spotting machine). You aren't invulnerable as the opposing team can shoot down your ship.

For dressup purposes she's the Shadow Flower because of the mask :3 I gave her a razor grin and some purple crystals. Adding a hat felt like too much but maybe I would have gone with the chaffeur hat.

I'm now realizing Shadow Flower would just be a good plant choice for her in general.

Sunflower life bonds are normally reserved for other sunflowers but she can have one with Taylor I think. Well ok not a true life bond because that requires the ability for mutual healing but it's more accurate this way because honestly chasing down someone across the entire map who will easily die if you aren't constantly healing them is just kind of the sunflower experience

BRIAN

Again, peashooter feels like a given, though unfortunately there's no equivalent ability for his darkness emission...

Plasma Pea because the colors are closest to black out of the peashooters. The Plasma Pea can charge up shots to increase their damage and radius of impact.

I didn't have any skull-based accessories so I just went with what felt cool and what he might use in an actual game of GW1... so basically just the intimidation factor

While we're here though if I was doing zombies he'd 100% be some sort of Foot Soldier. The Zombie Stink Cloud is 1:1 for his darkness ability. I guess since Peashooter and Foot Soldier are kind of parallels in terms of game play this works out well. (Seriously though every Peashooter main I know also mains Foot Soldier. Please I know you are good at video games just stop sniping me from across the map for 10 seconds 😭)

RACHEL

A chomper is a kind of dogy to be honest <---my logic when I was 10

Went back and forth between normal Chomper, Count Chompula, and Fire Chomper. Settled on fire chomper because I was thinking of that scene where she talks about her power burning away heartworm in her dogs, and also because orange. However I think normal Chomper would fit her just as well.

For dressup I was going more for what I envisioned her dogs looking like while reading worm. Additional chompers are there to represent her many doggies. Tentacle is there to be scary and monster esque. Metal brace jaw is there because honestly I think it looks really cool, plus I already had it equipped anyway

AISHA

Originally I was going to go with Chomper because ourple, and I still think it would fit her. However Future Cactus is also ourple. And also I think Future Cactus is so cool

My reasoning was that her stealth would translate well into cacti gameplay since with cacti you mostly need to just find a really good vantage point where no one else can see you, allowing you to snipe people well. But I'm now realizing the Future Cactus is like... a lot more visible bc of its chargeup. Oh well

I'm now realizing that in terms of gameplay probably one of the peashooters would have fit him better because well he does play shooter games. And peashooters are The main plant for guys who are so good at shooter games. But we have too many peashooters on this team so Sunflower it is

Originally was going with the Alien Flower because I thought its ornateness might fit him. But I don't have Alien Flower and it's more Aisha styled anyway (ourple and silly) so he gets the Power Flower.

Hey wait I used to main this thing too. Yay <---switched to Fire Flower though. But yeah as a sunflower I don't generally go out into the thick of things unless I have like 3 other guys with me, I mostly just stay behind at the garden and heal whoever needs it (garden ops or gardens and graveyards)

Honestly now I'm thinking I mostly chose this one for the appearance rather than gameplay. Actually wait the electricity theme fits with his tazer. Nevermind!!

The panda face tattoo is there because I thought it looked like his mask. Hat and masquerade mask are there because they're fancy.

Anyway that's my list. If and when in the near future I get better accessories I will do more dressup and also maybe deduce what zombies they main

30 Days of GW2

Day 28: Order of Whispers, Durmand Priory, or the Vigil

Vigil all the way baby!

Vigil was the first story line I did, so I have a lot of nostalgia for Forgal and Almora as well as the fort itself. I’ve been loving the more recent Living World episodes where we get to see more of Almora!

Of course, Brian’s main occupation is of a Vigil Crusader.

(checks online for release dates of games I love) Mass effect 3, Dragon age inquisition, The wolf among us, Tales from the borderlands, Oxenfree, D4 - Dark dreams don’t die, Injustice: Gods Among Us. All damn good games. 

most nostalgic game?  Final Fantasy IX. Now, I know a lot of people don’t like FF9, but... I did, and still do. I must have played it at least a dozen times, just because it makes me smile. Vivi... He’s just so adorable! 

game that deserves a sequel?  Shenmue!  Oh wait, that’s happening already!  Most of the games I like have sequels planned or are part of a bigger project anyway! But, there are two DS games called hotel dusk: room 215 and Last Window: The Secret of Cape West, both following the same character which were AMAZEBALLS! But we never got to see the conclusion of Kyle’s backstory. 

game that deserves a remaster?  Other than the very expected Dragon age/ Mass effect answer?  Discworld (1995), because Eric Idle voicing Rincewind the Wizzard (yes it is supposed to be spelt with two Z’s) is just the absolute definition of awesome. 

favorite game series? Dragon age, Mass effect, Skyrim, Guild Wars 2, Sam & Max, Batman: Arkham Asylum & Arkham City (Personally, I think the third one can piss right off...)   Pretty much all of the Telltale games.

favorite genre? RPG / Adventure /  Action / MMORPG. Big bloody games with huge amounts of character customization and story if possible.
