30 Days of Élite Fic ♛ Day 1: Hot Pairing: Lu x Nadia Rating: G
Nadia looks at her reflection in the mirror, letting out a deep breath. She smooths down the front of her navy blue jumpsuit, then fiddles with the sleeves of her cardigan.
To kick off the school year, Columbia is having a reception for a select group of international students that have received merit scholarships. This includes her and Lu, and they’ve planned to meet up in a few minutes and walk down to the auditorium together from the dorms.
Nadia isn’t one to be self-conscious. She’s more than proved her worth by getting here, to one of the best and most prestigious universities in the world. She’s always placed more value on her intellect, abilities, and character than the way she looks. And anyway, she’s used to being in an environment where most of her peers are better off than her, so their judgment won’t be anything new to her.
But…
She screws up her expression in the mirror and runs her hands over her face.
These are the people she’ll be spending the next four years of her life with. She just wants to make a good first impression.
Her phone buzzes, and she assumes it’ll be Lu, texting to let her know she’s outside. But when she picks it up from her desk, it’s a message from Guzmán.
Have fun at the reception today! I know you’re gonna blow everyone away from the moment you step in the room :)
Nadia reads the notification on her lockscreen, but doesn’t open the text. A faint smile plays on the edges of her lips, but it’s accompanied by a sinking feeling in her chest. Guzmán is over 5,000 kilometers away. Before she’d left for school, they hadn’t even really determined how they were going to proceed from there. What they were going to be.
Guzmán had told her not to put her life on hold for him, although it was clear he said it more for himself than for her. He already knew she wouldn’t.
Lost in her thoughts, Nadia is startled by a sharp knock on her door. She only has to walk a few paces to open it.
“Why didn’t you answer my texts, bitch?” Lu says, stepping past her into the room. “I was standing outside the building like a dumbass until I managed to charm someone into letting me in.”
Nadia rolls her eyes. “Sorry, I was just finishing getting ready,” she says. She turns back to her reflection in the mirror, and she catches Lu looking over her shoulder. “What? Are you going to tell me I look like a blueberry?”
“I don’t know why you think I’d ever say something like that,” Lu replies breezily. If she remembers comparing Nadia’s outfit to a pistachio a few months ago at their graduation, it conveniently slips her mind.
“So then why are you looking at me like that?”
“Because”—Lu examines Nadia intently, leaning back against Nadia’s roommate’s desk even though Nadia has repeatedly told her not to—“you don’t look nearly as excited as you should to meet the university’s best and brightest students from all around the world. That’s not the Nadia Shanaa I know.”
Nadia frowns. “I just have a lot on my mind,” she says with a shrug.
Lu comes up behind Nadia, putting her hands on her waist, and Nadia barely contains her gasp of surprise. “Well. Don’t let that stop you from showing New York who you are. You look hot, I look hot, and it won’t take long for everyone at that reception to realize that they all want to be friends with us. Now come on, let’s go, we’re gonna be late.”
Lu pats Nadia on the shoulder, then hitches her purse over her shoulder and heads for the door again.
Nadia has never sought out validation from Lu. Never in her life. And yet...something about hearing Lu call her hot makes her face flush. Hot isn’t something she’s been called many times before in her life, except by Guzmán and Rebe, and especially Rebe when she’s drunk.
But hot is something Lu undoubtedly is. Something she embodies. Nadia observes her feminine figure, the way her mauve silk dress clings impeccably to every curve, how her bronzed skin looks too soft and smooth to be real.
Lu thinks she, Nadia, is hot.
As if Nadia hadn’t already had enough on her mind.
