Stray Thoughts on Bungo Stray Dogs: 55 Minutes [SPOILERS]

I just finished the amazing 55 Minutes light novel. These are some thoughts I occasionally typed out as I was reading.

(If you haven't read the novel this is all going to sound batshit.)

Casually admitting to breaking into the weather bureau because a weather report was wrong is a top-10 Kunikida moment.

Dazai giggling in trash cans reminds me of the laughing honey pot from the "Heffalumps and Woozles" sequence in Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day.

Poor Atsushi bombing at improv in front of the thieves while trying to stall for Kunikida to show up.

Okay, so we can add "Watched everything I know and love perish before dying myself in an earlier timeline, having the memory imprinted on my present self, and redoing an investigation from the beginning with a new ulterior goal with millions of lives hanging in the balance" to Atsushi's extensive list of traumas.

Kunikida puts just as much faith in Dazai as Atsushi does.

Atsushi taking the time to scare Dazai is such a little brother move.

Dazai immediately getting Atsushi back is such a big brother move.

Oh my god, Atsushi and Akutagawa died together in the other timeline! And now this timeline's SSKK are imprinted-memories-of-a-localized-apocalypse buddies! I can totally be normal about that. Maybe.

Oh good, Atsushi gets to embarrass himself twice when dealing with the thieves. At least he handled it well the second time around.

Jesus, how much pudding did Dazai force-feed a guy for it to qualify as torture?

Nice to know that canon!Atsushi and (presumably) BEAST!Atsushi share stealth skills. Makes sense. They both snuck into the kitchen to make themselves a decent meal at an orphanage that would beat them for just breathing.

Confirmation that Atsushi is "covered in scars" beyond the two burns on his torso, meaning that he only recently inherited the tiger's powers of regeneration.

Higuchi celebrating getting a compliment from Akutagawa is adorable.

I love watching Atsushi grow as an actual detective. It's easy to miss because he's often around Dazai and Ranpo, but I've always maintained that he's pretty smart in his own right. He figures a lot of things out for himself.

Kunikida heading the "How to save Dazai if he dies" committee is very sweet.

It's funny how the easiest way to get SSKK to get along in the early days was for a villain to suggest that they could get along.

"Finish it. Bring him peace." Damn, Aku.

amnesia fics have no right to be so good

i love amnesia fics in general but i love the fun silly wholesome ones where one of the ship wakes up married or whatever and the other ship is desperately tripping over their feet trying to make the first one comfortable and yeah

sskk my beloved fic where atsushi gets amnesia and akutagawa is desperately trying to make atsushi as comfy as possible like atsushi comes to their apartment and is like "oh which room is mine" and akutagawa stares wide eyed like "oh that um we share" and then atsushi gets to the room and is like "wait where's my bed" becuz he's a silly little confused guy and akutagawa is like uhhh

and atsushi is like where are my clothes most of these look rlly expensive and aku has to explain that he has 0 self control and if atsushi as much as glances at something aku buys it for him

but also akutagawa losing his memory and atsushi having to take care of him

akutagawa is used to sharing his apartment but with his sister not this strange white haired man who looks at him like he's everything

anyway

he's hella confused but becuz he never thought he'd be in a relationship and yeah

atsushi is also doing anything and everything to make him comfy

akutagawa is awkwardly standing there watching atsushi dote on him, confused and surprised at the ease atsushi handles him with = how atsushi has blended into his routines and yeah

like i know the potential for it to be sad is there but i like the wholesome ness of amnesia fics jadksf

also the humor of one of them reaching into/seeing things of the more intimate sides of their relationship

"um akutagawa-san... why do we have a bag of girl... um private clothes..."

akutagawa, immediately grabbing and hiding it "you are seeing things!"

i feel like aku wouldn't ask questions like that like he'd be more aware that if theyre dating they might be cough intimate and even if he did he isnt really the type to ask questions as much as the type to try and figure it out all on his own but itd be funny if he did

anyway he'd still get confused by well atsushi being in love with him (atsushi would too btw i just didn't write that)

Hot take but Founding of the Agency is definitely going to be the next light novel to be animated, and it didn't need to have been animated before S3, even if S3 touches on some things that knowing the plot of the Founding would have helped with.

But thing is, we have to think of how relevant each storyline is.

Dark Era was relevant to S2 because that was the first time we saw Ango, and it's also necessary to understand the context of Dazai dealing with Akutagawa, and talking to Kyouka. We needed to know that he'd been close friends with a former assassin, who was just like Kyouka.

Fifteen was relevant to S3 because it didn't just deal with Dazai and Chuuya's first meeting, it also had major themes of leadership! Chuuya was the so-called "King of the Sheep" - but it was a title he hadn't asked for, and he wasn't respected. The previous boss of the mafia was killed and people saw that as a good thing. Mori and the way he was handling being the boss, even he was still new at it.

The thing is, we KNEW what Fukuzawa was like as a leader. We knew that he was beloved by the ADA, and he's more a father figure than a boss at times. But what we didn't know? The way the mafia in general saw Mori, and how far they'd go for him.

Fifteen shows us the difference between a mafia leader who didn't care, and one that does. It shows us Chuuya's compassion, and how Mori is the kind of person who, while still being a cold-blooded criminal, is worthy of his respect.

S3 dealt with how far the two organisations would go to protect their leaders. After Dark Era, which viewed Mori in a very bad light, Fifteen was almost required in order to balance out how we saw things. As well, it allowed there to be a sense of book-ending in terms of first SKK, then SSKK, teaming up to defeat an enemy.

Founding of the Agency is important for S4.

So damn important.

Founding deals with, for once, someone who isn't Dazai - it deals with Ranpo. And guys, I don't know if this is a spoiler or not, but - Dazai isn't going to be the main protagonist of S4. Fifteen wouldn't fit here. Ranpo will.

S4 - that is to say, the current manga arc - is going to deal with themes that are going to directly echo the events and themes of Untold Story.

And, y'know, I'm looking forward to that. And sometimes, just because we want something "now," doesn't mean it'd be what's best for the telling of the story.

What a callout! I would dispute that I watch that much anime, but I would be lying to myself and everyone else.

But I haven’t even watched all the anime that Miki listed (even though they’re all on my watch later with exception to Mirai Nikki which I will never finish). I want to watch Hunter x Hunter (2011) and Show by Rock!!

AUs that I think would be interesting:

BSD x Tokyo Godfathers

I’m gonna start this off with a really unconventional choice because Tokyo Godfathers is a movie, and it’s actually one of the best anime movies to ever exist. It’s about a band of misfits who find an infant and have to reunite the baby with its mother. I just think it’d be a fun adventure for the BSD crew (depending on who you pick for the AU). 

BSD x Vinland Saga

This one is interesting because their seiyuu would line up so well. Yuuto Uemura, who plays Atsushi, plays this hardened killer while Kenshou Ono, who plays Akutagawa, plays a soft “feminine” prince. It’d be fun to see a role reversal of some sort. Vinland Saga has some amazing fight scenes with some interest character and story developments, and while it lacks the comedic value of BSD, I would still recommend it.

BSD x Yakusoku no Neverland

As far as I know, almost all the BSD characters are orphans so what’s the real difference here? Instead of being all children, the age limit would be increased to 16. Dazai and Chuuya are 16, Ryuu is 14, Atsushi is 12, Gin would be 12 I think, and Kyouka is 8. Once they escape, they meet other defectors like Ranpo, Fukuzawa, and Kouyou.

BSD x Danganronpa

I’d want to see the executions. I’m not sure what their “Ultimate” titles would be though.

BSD x Dororo

Dororo with Fukuzawa and Ranpo would be fun to see. I would personally let Fukuzawa keep his organs since I don’t think he’d be Fukuzawa without them. Instead, let’s do a take on samurai taking advantage of that society. Let’s make him regain his honour as a samurai after seeing what his fellow samurai were doing to those villages. He’s extremely skilled with a sword and would slice and dice those demons and right the wrongs he did. He devotes his life to protecting the vulnerable. Meanwhile, Ranpo is an orphan who lost his parents due to the war and decides to follow Fukuzawa. Being by Fuku’s side to see through every situation, he can tell whether Fuku is being taken advantage of.

BSD x Kimetsu no Yaiba

Because why not? Atsushi as Tanjirou, Kyouka as Nezuko, and the rest don’t have “counterparts” really, but I can see some of the older characters being Pillars like Kunikida, Dazai, Chuuya, etc. Kyouka’s ability is literally named Demon Snow. Atsushi can have Breath of the Tiger. Akutagawa would be like the silent violent type and would have Breath of the Void. Ranpo and Fukuzawa would be the head of the corps. 

BSD x Sarazanmai

Dazai and Kunikida would be Reo and Mabu because of their seiyuu (but their dynamic will be different). I just feel like BSD and Sarazanmai surprisingly have similar vibes. 

BSD x No. 6

Dark hair edgy guy, white hair cinnamon roll who can secretly murder the whole nation, a virus, Studio Bones... I can just see SSKK shippers having a great time with this AU. Plus, Shion x Nezumi is canon. 

BSD x Mob Psycho 100

Dazai can give off some Reigen vibes. Instead of Mob, it’s Atsushi and Ryuu, and Dazai sends them to handle supernatural stuff while generally being neglectful. Although, Mob Psycho 100 had a great realization in season 2 which I still think about.

What other Anime that you like/love that you would love to see crossover with BSD and how?

I am not very well-versed in anime at all... I definitely haven’t seen as much as many people in the awkward squad (especially @awkwardbsd, Dino be wild)

But here are some of the ones I would low-key kill to see

BSD x Boku No Hero

Most of my thoughts would be here and here, but essentially I want to see the morally gray characters of BSD teach the heroes of BNHA. It would be cool.

BSD X Mirai Nikki

Mirai Nikki was my first anime actually (what an introduction) so I have a soft spot for it. I would die to see how the BSD cast would handle that battle royal as well as the individual diaries each would get.

BSD x Death Note

Fyodor/Dazai and Ranpo, Light and L, Nuff said.

BSD x Hunter x Hunter

I just... really love HxH... I don’t have any ideas...no thoughts... head empty... only Killua...

BSD x JS Hanako-Kun

Dazai has such Hanako energy.. or does Hanako have Dazai energy?
