Mihawk is such a capricious dude, oh my god. The only dude you know who is always itching for a fight but only ever a specific kind of fight so he goes out of his way to take the path of least resistance for everything else.

Like he would rather leave than fight Don krieg, Sail away than decimate the marines, live in peace instead of challenging the other emperors for the one piece. And when they do he’d rather follow buggy’s idea of just being smarter about how they go about it instead of brute forcing it like the rest. He is constantly leaving fights but then a swordsman of mild repute and an interesting technique engages him in a battle and suddenly you have his whole attention. Like with vista it was obvious that he could have just cleared him like he did everyone else but he’d never seen the flower sword techinque and by god was he going to miss this chance. And so he engages him in what is essentially a spare.

Because Mans isn’t looking for a fight, instead, like a middle aged director of a short indie film, he’s chasing a feeling.

He wants to feel like his 19 year old self did when he was strong but there were people stronger. When there were still obstacles to overcome limits to exceed. When the world was large and exciting and he wasn’t just waiting for it to catch up with him. When he could look at Shanks as the person he is instead of the person he could have been.

He wants to look at Shanks and not see visions of a grinning red haired boy with 2 arms and a strawhat laughing in the dirt and asking for “just one more round Hawky I swear I’ll beat you this time”

But there is nowhere Mihawk can run that that boy won’t haunt him.

It is an interesting conundrum.

Keyleth looked at Ashton and said they were Titan of blood, and that the Tree of Atrophy might have wisdom for them.

When asked about how to unlock his potential, the Tree told Ashton several things he knew already, and one big thing they didn’t: the existence of a shard of Rau’Shan and its location. The Tree gave him a warning about holding both, but no hint of how Ashton’s own dormant shard could be awakened.

The party went and retrieved the shard, with Ashton taking the lead and the risk to get it. And when they held in, Matt said they felt like it held the key to unlocking himself.

In Whitestone, Ashton gets warnings and caution against absorbing the shard, but there’s hesitancy from the NPCs about the harness in general, so the warnings all kind of muddle together. And again, there’s no alternative provided for unlocking the dormant earth shard within Ashton.

And then there is zero discussion of anyone besides Ashton or Fearne absorbing the shard. And Fearne says she doesn’t want it and thinks Ashton should have it.

So this is the information Ashton has. This is the information Taliesin has.

And as Matt said in the last 4-Sided Dive, he often makes scenarios with no right answer.

Did Matt have a plan for how someone who absorbed the Rau’Shaun shard could help Ashton awaken their own? Yes, I’m sure he did, now that he said he didn’t expect Ashton to go for it. But there was no in- or out-of-game hint of what that would be.

There’s no in-game reason for Ashton to think that, in passing up the shard, they weren’t passing up the opportunity to unlock their own Titan abilities.

Imogen embraced the storm and saved the party after the Otohan fight.

Chetney embraces his wild side and found acceptance.

Fearne gave her warmth to a ghost pirate and got a boon.

Laudna has give and take when engaging with Delilah for power.

And last episode, Ashton dived head first into lava, took damage every round, and ended up with the thing they wanted.

Matt rewards bold play, and that creates bold players.

I can’t say I wouldn’t have done the same.

Does he sit on Darktow feeling his past as Molly yearn and scream for his family but holds back because he can't stand the pitiful stares, the longing.

He can't get over his family looking through him bc Molly's dead even though he's *right fucking there*. That he IS their friend who simply chose a new name and a new path. That he is the same soul.

Does King lie awake wondering who he is...regretting his existence?

Does he feel empty despite being surrounded by so much?

Is Kingsley Tealeaf still feeling royal and loved after all these years?

Daevos hated it here, this far up the Orange Road. This close to Bruma you started to see snow on the ground year-round. Daevos was from Cheydinhal, blissfully temperate, a proper place where it snowed only in winter. He shivered in his cult-appointed red robes (although these lacked the Dawn’s insignias, for incognito purposes). At least he was on a sacred mission for Lord Camoran, he thought — to find and destroy the final Septim.

Daevos and his cult-appointed partner, Talieron, a rather obnoxious Cyrod from Anvil who at least hated this weather as much as he did, were tracking north. They’d personally discovered the Mythic Dawn’s failure at Kvatch to dispatch the bastard Septim — damn Daedra couldn’t keep up their end of the bargain — and were chasing up the province to seek him out. So far, no luck; just a few random travelers, merchant caravans, pilgrims, and Imperial Soldiers — these latter they gave wide berth, despite their hidden natures. None of the others reported seeing anything unusual from the other direction, except the occasional report of an odd red glow in the distance seen from the road. At least the Daedra were making the most of the situation.

It was near dusk when they came upon a strange trio. Two armed guards accompanied a third unarmed in exquisite finery, their head draped with a thick hood. Daevos greeted them: “Hail, travelers. What news?”

The three stopped. One of the guards turned his head. By flesh and eye he was another Dunmer, like Daevos, but by ear he was a man. Strange. “Can’t say I’ve heard much, stranger,” said the guard. “Wolves about, and Daedra, if you heed the stories. Watch yourselves.”

A normal enough response, thought Daevos. He pushed further. “Are you a noble entourage, by chance?” He nodded at the third, by her dress a woman, but by shoulder a man. Perhaps a woman by choice, rather than by birth, Daevos thought. Or perhaps truly a man in disguise. 

“Aye,” said the strangely-eared Dunmer. “Lady Kalthav of Skingrad. But if you’ve a liking for wealth, I’d advise adventuring instead, lad. Many abandoned ruins to be found along these roads.”

Daevos had never heard of any noble Kalthav family, but then again, he wasn’t familiar with Colovia much. He glanced at Talieron. He shrugged. “No,” said Daevos. “We’ve no interest in your Lady. We’re just lost, you see. Which way to Chorrol?”

“Not this way,” said the other guard, not turning his head. “Follow the road south where you came, and mind the crossroad signs. You’ll find it.”

“Thank you, kind sir,” said Daevos. “We’ll be on our way, then.” 

Once Daevos and Talieron were out of earshot, Talieron said, “They were very suspicious. Why didn’t we accost them further?”

“Because we’re not idiots, Tal,” said Daevos. “Let’s pass into the woods once they can’t see us and follow them in secret.”

“Aye,” said Talieron. 

Daevos was very curious about this “Lady Kalthav.” Perhaps not their mark. But perhaps an interesting target regardless. They would follow her north to her destination, wherever it lay.
