        She plays the nonchalant to perfection, Alexander mused when the coffee cup reached his lips. He knew, if the order had been given to her before, he wouldn't be sitting. He wouldn't have even made it close enough to sit on a chair. Granted, if the setting wasn't as public and playing in his favour. It allowed him to test the waters and also seek the answers to his questions. For who else would know Izumi Ryoto's thoughts better than his daughter?

        “ A threat? ” Amusement was visible in the smile that had tugged on his lips. No, he was far from making threats. He leaned into his seat, eyes calculating, caught for a mere moment in her gaze. “ I do not make threats. I make promises and give warnings. ” Promises he always kept, warnings he shared when he wanted to play games.

        It had been this childlike fascination with the world around him that made him so unpredictable. He observed those around him as if they were different, special. Like a kid whose world was so vastly different from that of adults, the world seemed as if it needed to be analysed to the most meticulous of details. Their movements, their speech, their conduct. He watched it as if he was yet to step into that world, as if he had not been part of it for years. Yet, he believed — more so than anyone else, that the true colours of the world were understood through his crystalline gaze. Reflected through them like against a water surface. In that reflection he found meaning. In that reflection he found truth.

        Currently, the truth was quite simple. He was at a border that stretched far and wide. Izumi Ryoto was on the other side, serving as a barrier he needed to overcome. The playfield wasn't in his favour and the chances of failure were higher than success. How many times had he defied the numbers against him? If to judge by the trail he left behind him, plenty of times.

        “ Rather than going in circles, I was hoping we could mutually exploit each other. ” Amusement etched itself in his features, in the corners of his smile, his facial muscles and the intrigue in his eyes. “ Your family has information and influence here. I have it in the USA and parts of Europe. You give me access to Japan's black market and I return in kind. The reason why I am not speaking with your father about this is purely because I feel he needs a nudge from someone he trusts to see the potential of the offer. ”

My favorite costume in the Iwate local hero show, Iron God Gunriser NEO (鉄神ガンライザーNEO), is this yellow character Izuna. I don't know much about her yet, but she grabs my attention.

“It used to.” Dakota admits, “And I used to be so very self conscious of that fact — thinking about… all the ways I “drew attention to myself”. Or, perhaps if I was uglier, had more scars — looked a bit more masculine — then perhaps they wouldn't stare as much.”

“Foolish little me thought that…. they wouldn't just hate that I commanded respect by virtue of just existing — not when they've seen how hard I've worked or…. that I've struggled and bled just like they have. But they didn't care so… eventually, I stopped caring as much about it. It's not my job to manage the feelings of insecure men.”

Dakota smiles back a bit. “…These days, I take a little joy in seeing how much I can piss them off without doing much of anything. Seems to really get them going.”

Her presence went unnoticed since there were more people than usual. It was busy today, but that’s joyous, considering there’s more attention to this establishment. Or it could be because it’s a weekend and there’s more free time here.

Luckily, one of her co-workers was kind enough to remind her of Kana’s arrival.

“Looking for me?” Irina stared at her confusingly since she could’ve asked the whereabouts of her trainer. “Oh yes!” Her eyes lit up in enthusiasm. “I remembered! I was wondering when we’re about, to begin with, that!” She clasped the other’s hands together excitedly.

She doesn’t recall the last time she taught advanced techniques to another. It’s always the basics that can get repetitive sometimes. Overall, Irina’s glad to be teaching someone eager to learn.

“If you have any questions, I’d love to answer them. This is exciting! Come with me! We can’t do it in the main room since it’s too crowded.” She walks away to enter a private exercise room consisting of an assortment of equipment.

“I’m sorry, Kana. I get way too excited to teach someone new techniques.”

Tomoko had a cigarette loosely dangling between her lips, fumbling around in her pockets to find her lighter. She didn’t smoke as often as she used to, trying to break the one vice she had. That and it wouldn’t do for someone who was a front line brawler to have shitty lungs. Nobody’d take her seriously if she started coughing up a lung or two in the middle of a fight.

I have long been interested in Local Heroes (ローカルヒーロー), which is like a tokusatsu-style hero that is themed around a specific geographic location and usually acts as a protector of that place. I love it because it combines my interest in geography and culture with my interest in super hero stories. The drawback, unfortunately, is that these stories are often sexist, with few female heroes and often casting the female characters that are included as either sidekicks or damsels in distress who need saving.

My family partner in Japan is from Iwate prefecture (岩手県) so she helped me procure the DVDs for their local hero's TV show, Iron God Gunriser (鉄神ガンライザー) and its sequel, Iron God Gunriser NEO (鉄神ガンライザーNEO).

These images are from the first episode of the second series. I love all of the Iwate things that I have heard about that are visible in the show. Here, of course, we have the hero himself and his super power suit which has the first kanjji of the prefecture worked into the design on his breastplate. I assume that he's standing in front of Mt. Iwate (岩手山) and we get a full aerial shot of Morioka (盛岡市), which is the capital city of the prefecture.
