Gundam Wing Sequel: Angel's Reckoning

Premise

This is set around the same time as Frozen Teardrop, with a few differences.

Since the end of the OZ and Mariemaia conflicts, there has been years of peace. Mobile Suits as weapons of war, while still a little fresh in people's minds, are largely a thing of the past as MS are now strictly made for civilian-use only. Strict laws are made in order to make this possible.

Our heroes from the conflicts are living normal lives as best they can. Duo and Hilda are raising their son, who's much like his father. Zechs and Noin live happily with their twin children. Wufei and Sally have some sort of kinship as they raise Kathy together. Trowa (Triton) lives peacefully with his sister at the circus.

For Quatre, things are not so simple. Much to his surprise, he has a clone named Katherine. He's been trying to take her under his wing, but it's been a challenge. The Preventers, led by Une and Relena, have had their hands full with 1: training Phobos and 2: keeping watch on an organization potentially breaking the MS law and 3: gearing for an inevitable armed conflict.

Heero, meanwhile, has a clone that he's been raising as his own daughter. However, that also has challenges as he's forced to be cryogenically frozen, only able to be woken up for 48 hours a month at most. He has yet to specify why, though most speculate that his health's declining.

Like it or not, this peace is short-lived as the organization is dead-set on wiping out those involved with Operation Meteor and the OZ conflict.

New Characters

Tenshi Yuy

Repurposed from my Gundam Build OCs, Tenshi is the sole clone of Heero, raised by him and the other Gundam pilots as his daughter. Physically, she's very much like her father, but with longer hair.

She's cheerful, kind, and often relaxed. She's also quite charming and has a brave and heroic side to her, not to mention selfless. She also cares about her family and friends deeply. As such, she's quite affectionate.

Much like Heero, she can be cold and stoic and much like her father, she believes that the best way to live life is by one's emotions. This is shown when she encourages her friends to show and vent out their sadness and angry openly.

As for what's unique about her, Tenshi is 19 years old, 5 feet and 6 inches, and is VERY protective over her loved ones. She can be quite violent and quick to act if there's danger. She also quite nerdy, especially about the gundams and weapons.

She is also a woman of respect, learning, and change. She respects her family, friends, teachers, and others as people, rather than idols. She's also willing to learn and change if necessary. Even though she struggles with it.

She carries around two pistols for emergencies and has no issue with using them. She will also often call Heero's Gundams as "Dad's shadow/wing" ("Kage/Tsubasa no Otousan" in japanese), showing her belief that the Wing Zero can be viewed as Heero watching over her and showing her deep care and love for her family.

For those of you who are curious about her sexuality, she’s aromantic and sex-repulsed.

Antagonists

The antagonists are comprised of certain FT antagonists (like Katherine) and original ones, like our main antagonist. The organization members are mostly motivated by getting revenge on those who were involved in Operation Meteor and the OZ conflicts, due to massive losses of life.

Our main antagonist, while also motivated by this desire, wants to punish the world rather than uproot the discourse and make things better. She is largely calm and collected, strategically thinking of how to best ensure the destruction of the enemy, but is can be mentally unstable towards her enemies.

In terms of appearance, she is very similar to the late Treize (including his height), though her outfit is more similar to Une's.

Mobile Suits

As said, most MS in the current MC era are meant for civilian usage. As such, they do not contain any form of weaponry. They are primarily based on the outdated Leo, as it was cheap and easy to mass produce.

Of course, Duo II uses the Warlock as he does in FT, but Phobos uses the Prometheus (which was original stolen by Katherine in FT). Quatre uses an MS meant to mimic the capabilities of the Sandrock.

The Wing Gundams

Both Wing Gundams from the show and EW are featured in two different ways. Here, the show's designs for the units are canon, but were upgraded to their EW/Katoki designs later.

The Wing was salvaged after the Mariemaia conflict as a secret last resort method by the Preventers. Wing Zero was upgraded during the last days of the Eve Wars. Later, Wing Zero would be salvaged after the Mariamaia conflict and be reborn as a new unit, again by the Preventers.

BOTH were done at Heero's request.

The Wing was renamed Wing Gundam Second Coming. Statistics-wise, it is essentially identical to its EW counterpart, but comes equipped with the WING system (a lesser copy of the superior ZERO system. Both have the same job, but WING gives less information and is far less taxing on the pilot). It also serves as an AI/auto-pilot.

The Wing Zero was upgraded into the Wing Gundam Archangel. Virtually, it is identical to the Wing Gundam Snow Wing Prelude from FT, but it has a few new features. It has been refitted with a co-pilot cockpit specifically for Neo-Bird Mode, the Wing Zero's ZERO system (now upgraded to be less mentally taxing), active camouflage, two heat swords stored in the Seraph Binder, and two beam pistols hidden in the Twin Buster Rifle.

Antagonists

Aside from using MS from FT, the main antagonist uses an MS based on the Tallgeese with a complementary Mobile Armor.

It is named the Tallgeese Meteor, which was based on the Flugel and Tallgeese II, but significantly upgraded. The Armor is named the Armageddon Unit, specifically made to destroy the Gundams.

Elites commanders are allows to use MS that are designs to LOOK like the Operation Meteor Gundams, as a means to mock their opponents.

Story Overview

The first season would start off more light-hearted, as Tenshi (despite knowing she's a clone of the greatest Gundam pilot in the AC/MC timeline) is trying to live a normal life.

17 episodes are used to showcase the characters' bond with each other and demonstrate their capabilities, while 5 are used to set up the main conflict of this story, which is the antagonists' goal to kill the Gundam pilots in an act of vengeance.

3 others are used as recap episodes, summarizing the original show, the EW movie, and what happened in between these three stories. This also includes the development of the FT and unique MS.

The second season would primarily go through the conflict, showing that while Tenshi and Duo II, as well as Zechs and Noin's kids, are most CERTAINLY not ready for war, they will protect their families by ANY means.

This will reveal who the antagonists are (some are still the same from FT, though it'll be hinted at much better here), Wufei's involvement (because he's always the person doing his own thing), and WHY Heero was continuously going through cryo.

I'm ultimately considering Heero either giving his life to protect the children or die in peace while bonding with his friends and family. That's his endgame. The Wing's last mission is to bring Heero back safely for a proper funeral.

Tenshi would go after the main antagonist herself, believing that no one else she loves should die because of this nonsense. Ultimately, she succeeds in reaching her target, but loses in a one-on-one fight.

Phobos, Duo II, and Zechs and Noin's kids rescue her, thus convincing her that they need to work together in order to return home. The younger cast resolve to stay while the OG cast leave to ensure the Wing's safety.

During the final battle, Tenshi with the Wing Archangel lays waste to EVERYTHING daring to challenge her. Duo II, Zechs and Noin's kids, and Trowa Phobos are with her in the Wing Archangel's cockpit after the Warlock, Prometheus, and other allied units are destroyed.

Duo, Trowa, Quatre, Zechs, Noin, and Wufei will join the final battle in the OG Wing, Tallgeese Heaven, and Epyon Bai respectively. Duo, Trowa, and Quatre piloting the regular Wing is them paying tribute to Heero, much like Tenshi is by piloting the Wing Archangel.

The OP would be Across The End by Two-Mix, because yes. Nightwish's Wish I Had an Angel would be used as an insert song during the final battle.

I should like to request one unskippable cutscene regarding you AC timeline, please.

I'm so glad you asked! :D *clears throat and gets out my little glasses*

SO: long have I held that one of the biggest problems with Gundam Wing is the anime-typical-ageism that plagues the canon age range of the adult cast of characters (the gundam pilots being 15 is fairly integral to the story and I don't have beef with it) -- something that becomes so, so painfully clear in Frozen Teardrop, where Sumizawa not only committed to but double and triple downed on there being genius infants participating in OZ's command structure. I stand by my objections to the canon ages of the adult characters-- BUT! 👆I realized recently that my actual objection has slightly less to do with the characters' ages themselves, and more to do with the timeline as a whole.

...and I DO have an entire timeline written out of an extended version of events that I have meticulously salvaged and spliced from series canon and Frozen Teardrop which I then reconstructed and modified according to my own vile needs and requirements, which I will definitely post here once I've... tamed it a bit, because right now it's eleven pages of very shouty bullet points and margin notes.

MEANWHILE-- here is Wesley's A.C. Extended Timeline Theory:

The events of the series supposedly take place over the course of a single year-- and as far as I'm concerned this is a bigger infraction than 11 year olds receiving field promotions. The original five Gundams supposedly took 10 years to develop with support of a major political entity, and yet by mid-series a single guy can apparently cobble together a Wing Zero or an Epyon if given a fortnight. They build a whole Death Star in the course of like a month. They standardize production of a revolutionary new model of MS in weeks. Treize musters the armed forces of the entire globe in days. Sure, one could do backflips to find in-universe reasons to justify any these things if one so chose-- but I find it way more plausible-- and, more importantly, more compelling-- to imagine the events of the series take place over the course of a few years!

The Gundam Pilots are child soldiers so young that it is shocking to the OZ pilots who see them for the first time-- this makes sense and is thematically important-- however! If you give them three or four years to mature over the course of the series, a lot of their emotional development falls neatly into place: the fact that they become more independent in their beliefs, especially as they must adapt to a much more complex world, and that they develop a more nuanced understanding of their purpose and learn to take responsibility for their actions, all go beautifully hand-in-hand with them growing up.

--For the OZ characters, their emotional development has some goddamn time to breathe. And! there's even more breathing room to be carved out of the timeline if you simply extend it backwards. Suddenly, the adult cast has a much more believable scale for their life histories, as well as for the HISTORY-history of the After Colony era. This moves the OZ characters' birth dates back somewhat, as well as key dates like the fall of Sanc and the assassination of Heero Yuy, but the characters’ ages in relation to each other remain the same. The adult characters are older at the time of AC 195, when the events of the series begin-- which themselves become more spaced out and take longer than a single year, allowing for a far more plausible timescale for the main events (space battleships, new gundams, regime changes, etc. etc.) as well as the various emotional growing pains. Zechs goes from a young hotshot pilot, to a hotshot renegade, to a very, very depressed renegade, and then finally does a Full Char (or at least gives the appearance of doing a Full Char, as I have essay'd upon previously). If this downward spiral happens over the course of his mid-to-late twenties, it pairs nicely with the prodigy-to-frustrated-adult pipeline. Much like the gundam pilots, he ALSO has to deal with a more complex world that he no longer has a clearly defined purpose in, and he's dealing with it about as poorly as is humanly possible. Treize is likewise meant to be a disruptive young upstart, but a "young" upstart in a truly old boys club could just as well be someone in their early 50's. He's a full Colonel/Major General at the start of the series with a significant portion of his past career spent in pilot training and command. Like... he just realistically needs to be older than 24. The Romefeller Foundation is incredibly influential, but not influential enough to bully the Alliance into letting a 15 year old give operational directives, no matter how much of a smartypants he is. Adjusting the timeline makes it so he undergoes a similarly frustrated arc to Zechs except sometime in his 30's. Treize begins the series with a slightly more nuanced view of world than the younger protagonists (which, I maintain, takes time and experience to develop *glares* ...Sumizawa.) and when this too is deconstructed his whole raison d'être unravels in a less explosive (haha) way than theirs.

IDK-- I apologize for the CW: suicidal ideation, but I don't really know how else to explain myself here other than to say that Treize's arc makes much, much more sense if you consider he is a guy, totally isolated, with depression, in his mid-to-late 30's, who has been told his whole life that the only true justification for existence is to seek Greatness, who completely loses faith in himself and the things he believed in-- who sees an opportunity to die for something meaningful as a blessing, a huge relief, a gift. He was ready to let Heero cap him 0 seconds after saying hello, but barring that, he was waiting for a way out that would even remotely begin to give purpose back to those 99,822 names in his ledger. Someone like Zechs might well choose to go out fist-fighting god and die historic on that fury road, because he's got energy left; he's still fueled by spite and anger along with the pain. What Treize does, by comparison, seems to me like a way of confronting the same level of despair and self-reckoning that's just a little more matured-- NOT as in "emotionally mature" but as in "has had longer to ferment" matured-- a vintage depression that has been aged in an oak barrel for an extra decade giving it a smooth finish. NOW, AM I PROJECTING A BIT? MAYBE SO, but I very much feel that Treize reads better as a character if he's been in play longer, had more time to contemplate the mess that is After Colony, and had a few years to appreciate the view while falling from a sky-high pedestal.

...And God, I WISH we knew more about the ladies. Oh, OZ ladies, where are your backstories? When do we get them? And if we did get them, would they be terrible? These are the questions that keep me up at night. --But regardless, the same holds true for them as the rest of the cast: EVERYTHING needs MORE TIME to COOK. It's TASTIER if you let it SIMMER!!!!

Is it Tsubarov or Tubarov?

So, this one is funny. As you can see above, the wiki has adopted the latter spelling, which originates from the translation of Glory of Losers and Frozen Teardrop by Zeonic Scanslations. It's also where "Bilmon" first popped up as a last name for the guy, by the by. If you look at the katakana, it spells tsu-ba-ro-fu, but as anyone who has learned the Japanese alphabet knows, there is no tu, so tsu is usually used in its place. Just like there is no si, only a shi, which leads to all the "city boy" humor. Meaning, a translator might find themselves pondering if they should go with tu or tsu in a name, especially if it's a made up one. And in this case, the translator decided to go with tu because he probably felt "Tubarov" sounded more correct. This is Gundam Wing though.

From the Gundam Wing Perfect Archive Series, p. 189. Tsubarov's name is supposed to be derived from the German word for 12, zwölf. The z in German is always a "ts" sound, so "Tsubarov" is actually the correct spelling. And before anyone thinks to themselves "well, why didn't they just go with the number then?" That's because the very first translators wanted to be phonetically close and anyone trying to pronounce zwölf who doesn't speak flawless German would probably end up saying some form of "ze-wolf" which doesn't even come close. The American dub had troubles pronouncing Hilde, for crying out loud. Like that's a hard name. So Tsubarov it is, just like it is Noin and not Neun. But. And here comes the funny part, which is just a euphemism for me having had to take linguistics, so now you all get to suffer through it with me. "Two" in German is "zwei". Depending on the region or if you watch Star Wars, you'll hear it pronounced "zwo", too, though. R2D2 is the most famous example. It also used to happen a lot on the telephone when people spelled telephone numbers or the number of a bank account etc. so that it doesn't get mixed up with 3, "drei". "Two" and "zwo" have the same root, the Proto-Germanic "twō". The difference is that English stopped pronouncing the w and German had a sound shift known as the High German consonant shift, where a lot of Proto-Germanic "t" sounds changed into "ts" which is how the letter z is pronounced in German. So, tomato, tomahto, or in this case, Tubarov, Tsubarov. It's amusing how a language on the other side of the globe lacking a tu ended up reverse sound shifting a name derived from a German word because a fan thought it'd sound better that way. What are the odds.

This is just a random observation that I noticed about Gundam Wing:

After like 10 years, I decided to rewatch the series and then I reread Heero’s Episode Zero chapter. According to EZ, Heero and Odin were only together by “contract”. That, to me, implied that Odin is not Heero’s biological father and that he’s only taking care of him out of some sort of obligation.

Now I haven’t read Frozen Teardrop and I don’t really plan to because, (I mean come on, have you seen that plot lol) I could pick apart what I do know about it but, it just seems a little odd. Heero’s chapter seems to lead the reader to the conclusion of Odin obviously feeling guilty about killing Heero Yuy and then he just randomly has this little boy with him. It’s as if that boy was Heero’s son and since Odin killed his father, he felt compelled to take the boy on as his own.

I understand FT says that Odin is in fact the boy’s biological father with Aoi Clark (who doesn’t even have an official character design btw) **Neither does Solo from Duo’s official backstory but I digress** being his mother but I just find it strange that the kid doesn’t have a name if he was Odin’s after all. Maybe it was mentioned that his name really is Odin Lowe II but why would that name not be alluded to at all in the series? The series alluded to his mantra that Heero repeats throughout the series which is basically to listen to the heart. Obviously Odin cared enough about Heero to take care of him. It just doesn’t make sense why this kid wouldn’t know his name/have a name. Also, I just find it random that Heero is related to Trant Clark, some random Oz soldier, that was curious about the zero system, with nothing really substantial mentioned about him like idk a great revelation that he’s like Heero’s uncle or something. Heero didn’t even end up fighting him lol.

I personally think it would have worked out better plot wise if Heero was Heero’s son rather than Odin’s because it would have only emphasized further that Heero really is the “perfect soldier”. He fights for the “revenge” of the colonies while beneath the surface he actually fights to avenge his own father without even knowing it. That’s the thing that makes Heero so pure intentioned though. He fights solely for peace within, not only the colonies but, the Earth as well (as seen at the end of the series). Revenge was never really the goal of any of the pilots or else they would have fully taken part in Operation Meteor, wreaking havoc everywhere for everyone both oz and civilians on Earth alike.

Also, I love how Odin’s character design in EZ was retconed for the more Heero looking one in FT/Glory of Losers and, at the same time, Heero Yuy’s design also has a striking resemblance to the main pilot. It’s like they couldn’t decide who Heero’s father should be.

Also, the Sanc Kingdom sought peace from Earth while Heero Yuy preached peace in the colonies and then you have the heir of the Sanc Kingdom end up with the son of the colonies’ prominent pacifist.

My headcanon is Heero is still the product of a love affair just not with Odin as the main man but Heero Yuy. Like his wife probably ordered for her husband to be killed for cheating with some younger woman, making Heero his illegitimate son, adding to the chaos of it all, resulting in his birth to be the actual catalyst that sparks war between the colonies and Earth. Somehow, I think that would have made more sense and really tie everything together so neatly and dramatically.

My fellow Gundam Wing fans, I have a question: does Trowa ever find out he’s really Triton Bloom? As far as I remember (and it’s been forever) Episode Zero tells the audience he’s actually Triton Bloom but neither he nor Catherine knows it. But unless there’s some media I’m not familiar with (or am actively refusing to read, like Frozen Teardrop) he has no idea and just keeps on using the name Trowa Barton.

This is super not important. I just have dumb ass fanfic ideas and also read a sus article about him that I know had some errors in it, making me then question the whole thing. Anyway, I just got curious where canon was on this.
