I have two gum boils or abscesses and Internet has freaked me out for having to wait one more day for my dentist appointment. Truth is I have the first abscess for a month or so and I kinda stupidly ignored it because I felt no irritation at all. I still have almost no irritation, despite them being two now. It worries me that it traveled to the other side of the mouth though. Two absesses on opposite sides…? The teeth look all right though.
I don’t know, being a person who brushes regularly and according to the guidelines and flosses often, who goes to an orthodontist every month, I just feel I don’t “deserve” all the torment I am going through with my teeth and gums.
Today it’s going to be a long day. It’s unbelievable that I feel impatient to go to a dentist… Health websites scare me so bloody much.
*some mail I have received, I promise I will answer as soon as I don’t feel so scared.

What is a Gum Boil?
A gum boil, also known as a gum abscess or tooth abscess, is a painful infection that occurs in the gums or around the root of a tooth. It is a collection of pus that forms in the soft tissue surrounding the teeth or inside the mouth. Typically, it develops when bacteria enter the pulp of the tooth or the periodontal tissue, leading to an infection and the formation of an abscess.
Causes of Gum Boils
There are several factors that can cause boil on teeth gum:
Poor Oral Hygiene: Inadequate brushing and flossing can lead to plaque and bacteria accumulation on teeth and gums.
Tooth Decay: Untreated cavities can allow infection to spread to the gum tissue.
Gum Disease: Advanced gum disease can damage the soft tissue, creating an entry point for bacteria.
Trauma: Injuries to teeth or gums can create pathways for bacteria.
Weakened Immune System: A compromised immune system can increase susceptibility to infections.
Symptoms of Gum Boils
Symptoms can vary depending on the size and location of the boil. Common ones include:
Severe pain and throbbing in the gums or teeth.
Swelling, redness, and soreness in the impacted area.
Pus discharge from the abscess.
Sensitivity to hot or cold meals and beverages.
Difficulty chewing or biting.
Fever and chills (in severe cases).
Bad breath.
How to Get Rid of a Gum Boil?
Treatment varies based on the severity of the illness. Options may include:
Antibiotics: To fight bacterial infections.
Drainage: To remove pus and reduce pressure.
Tooth Extraction: To remove the source of infection.
Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal): To remove infected pulp and seal the canal.
Natural Remedies for Gum Boils
In addition to medical treatments, natural remedies like saltwater rinses, clove oil, tea tree oil, and garlic can provide temporary relief from gum abscess symptoms.
Conclusion
Gum boils are a serious issue that should not be ignored. Understanding their causes, symptoms, and treatments is crucial for maintaining good oral health. By practicing good dental hygiene, addressing underlying dental issues, and seeking timely treatment, individuals can prevent and manage gum abscesses effectively. Dental Things
This is kind of random but hey if you want to share something about your character's dental health then here's a list of things. This is based on my various various dental problems :D
Their two front teeth are fillings (broke their adult teeth by tripping and falling flat on their face as a kid)
Addendum, said trauma to teeth results in an abscess like ten years later that appears seemingly out of nowhere, causes increasingly painful swelling over time and leads to a root canal
If the story is set in America, then lemme tell you, dental care is expensive without insurance. Like, you can spend $300 just on a consultation (and like 2 x-rays) ~$120 for a regular cleaning but that's actually not too bad
they've got a gold/silver crown on their back teeth from accidentally causing their teeth to crack
one time they went to the dentist and like 3 people gathered around them to gawk at their "uniquely shaped canines"
they're missing like 2 teeth from their lower jaw. not from like them falling out or anything. they just. never grew in.
they wear retainers at night!
on the flip side, they're supposed to wear the retainers, but simply do not.
braces!! with colors!!!
them after getting their graces tightened and they're clenching their teeth or putting their head down or trying to gnaw at something for the pain
they can feel with their tongue their wisdom teeth under their gums
gums being so swollen/painful that they're prescribed the powerful pain killers (from my experience 800 mg is prescription and 200 mg is over the counter for like ibuprofen)
when they're in so much pain that they literally cannot focus on anything else and can't do anything but sit and try to soothe their pain with like an ice pack or cold water or something
it is in fact possible to be in so much pain constantly that one cannot sleep
addendum:
gods above so much swelling, like it might not even be painful their lip is just hilariously swollen so it looks like they got a really bad lip job.
#writing prompts#prompt list#story prompts#anyways guess who found out they had an abscess in their gums right after finals and needs to get a root canal#the powerful painkillers are working#lfggg i can sleep tonight guys

Gum Abscess Pain: Home Remedies to Reduce Pain
A gum abscess, or periodontal abscess, results from plaque buildup beneath the gums, causing pain and potential complications. While seeking immediate dental care is crucial, several home remedies can offer temporary relief.
Garlic: Its antibacterial properties aid in reducing gum abscess pain. Apply crushed garlic juice directly on the affected area or place a clove on the gum for relief.
Oil Pulling: Swish coconut oil for 15-20 minutes daily to deter bacterial growth and fight infection.
Peppermint Oil: With antiseptic properties, applying a few drops on a cotton ball and massaging the gums can reduce swelling.
Turmeric Paste: Its anti-inflammatory nature helps alleviate pain. Apply a paste of turmeric and water on the affected gum multiple times a day.
Baking Soda: Create an alkaline environment by using a mixture of baking soda and salt on a damp cotton ball over the abscess for an hour.
Teabags: Tannins in tea bags possess anti-inflammatory effects. Placing a warm tea bag on the abscess temporarily eases pain.
Medications: Dentists may prescribe antibiotics, painkillers, or recommend surgery to eliminate the abscess.
These remedies provide temporary relief but aren't permanent solutions. Seeking professional dental care remains imperative for proper diagnosis and treatment of gum abscesses. Early intervention prevents potential complications.

I have what I believe is an abscess in my gum. It's in the back of my mouth so I can't be sure, but it hurts just an awful lot. I am disabled and unemployed with a disability application currently in limbo. There are no accessible low-cost dentists/charities near me, and the estimate I've gotten from a regular dentist's office is $380. I cannot afford $380. Thus, I have started a GoFundMe for the cost of the procedure.
Abscesses can be dangerous if not dealt with in time, and they do not heal on their own. I've already put this off while dealing with family issues and trying to find an affordable option, and the pain is getting worse. Please, please help me get this addressed before it becomes a much worse issue.
GoFundMe

Cashapp
Any funds raised past the estimate will be used for unforeseen fees, any necessary medications, and possible complications in my care. Thank you all so, so much.
