you really need to raise your standards for what's considered "a phrase" because if it only makes sense in the specific context of the post it was originally found in and it isn't repeatable in other situations, that's not a phrase that has entered the lexicon, that's just something someone said one time.

What doesn't alter your vocabulary may alter, or may have already altered, someone else's. This is not about adding to The General Lexicon - I have an entire tag for things that change this site as a whole, which has a higher bar; this is largely about novelty and humor. This is us curb-stomping whatever the fuck we want into the right form for our needs, whatever those needs may be, including altering aspects of the phrase to fit the necessary format or context. It's a linguistic shotgun.

I had this idea kinda pop into my head and I can't sleep until I ramble about it for a little bit.

The idea kinda is to spark a chain between a bunch of au's. Like a collab thing but like- you don't really need to talk with anyone else to get it set up really. (wait, that's just an event) Maybe this would be an event, yeah.

It'd maybe be a story of Nine a bit after Sonic Prime trying to find a universe fit for him to live peacefully in. Maybe even find the Sonic that's right for him (he probably never will). So he'd bounce from Sonic AU to Sonic AU, learning a bit about it but ultimately leaving it as he views it isn't fit for him.

You could throw your headcanons in for Nine too- claim that it's the unknown energy of the universes that has changed his memory and appearance. But he knows his goal: find a universe that's just right, but it seems like it'll never come to be. It frustrates him, but he secretly doesn't mind that much because he actually likes to travel the different universes and see what's strange about it.

Maybe I could make it an actual event, even with a hashtag and such, but that's only if enough people might be interested in it (and when it isn't 3 am brain talking)

What kind of questions are good to ask your rabbi during the first meeting? I know it's good to ask questions but I can't really think of any other than what will the process be like etc., and I want to plan ahead

I didn't ask too many questions during the first meeting, but my rabbi and I got to know each other as people. He talked a bit about his history as a rabbi, some things about his practices, and then I talked about what led me to judaism and a bit of how I've integrated judaism into my life at that point.

I do think the most important question you can ask at this time is for them to outline what their expectations would be of you if you both decide to go forward. So asking what coursework there might be (my rabbi mostly gives me optional readings because I'm already in a course), how they teach, what they most often teach, and perhaps even what steps they would encourage you to take while you're converting are all good questions.

I would stray away from political questions or complex questions only when you and your potential rabbi are first meeting. You will likely have many more meetings where you can address certain things! My rabbi and I have met about three or four times, and it's pretty recent that I talked about (am/eretz) yisrael with him and how many complex and deep feelings I have about it (very cathartic and comforting, I will say). Unless it's a make-or-break for you, you can probably delay those topics for the near future.

I honestly think the first meeting is more than just discussing "practical" topics like how you'll be converting and what the process is like and asking questions. It's also to get to know each other as people. Not every rabbi will fit into your conversion in a fruitful way - you're also seeing if the rabbi will be a good fit for your goals in judaism and how you want to exist as a jew in the future.

I don't want to say "have fun and be yourself," but I think you should try to do that in part! There will probably be many places where you'll want to ask questions, and I can't anticipate that. I personally didn't ask questions from my rabbi because I could tell we were a good match, and sometimes, it's like that! But don't be afraid of the rabbi - they're a person, they're not infallible, and so many rabbis absolutely love to talk to students! I am fully confident that you wouldn't be an exception to that

I explicitly say in my pinned post do not send me a request you’re sending to a bunch of other authors just to see who will get to it first, and you’ve sent this exact request, word for word, to at least one other person

sending a bunch of people the same ask runs the risk of a bunch of people writing the same exact thing, and some people don’t post asks directly, they just post and say it was a request. in this case, if the other person you sent this to and I both posted this request, one of us would be accused of copying the other, depending on who posted it first, which creates unnecessary drama

do not send multiple people the same exact request. send it to one person. if they are not able/don’t want to write it, then send it to someone else, but do not do this

So I've asked this question to someone else too, but some people always be like: oh gods won't respond back when you're just worshipping (you can't communicate with them) only if you're WORKshipping but I've heard a lot of times that ain't true at all. They can respond back and might with worshipping. What's your take on this?

Here are my own personal definition of the two. Deity Work: Communicating with a deity for reciprocity or a trade of discussed energies and actions. These are often discussed in how it will be done, when it will be done, etc. This can be seen as sort of a "business deal" in a way. There is a specific PURPOSE in why you are contacting them and what will be done between the two of you. (EX: Working with Apollo for your art/music in return for ritual work/dedicating energy&time to him/etc.) Deity Worship: Speaking and acknowledging a deity with reverence. Praising their name, their acts, personalities, myths, etc. Often, this includes traditional worshipping acts like prayer, poems/art/performances, offering gifts/meals/etc. Many times worshippers do so not only to honor the deity but to receive their favor.

To me personally, there tends to be an overlap between these two things with those who pursue deities but not everyone who works with a deity worships them and not everyone who worships a deity works with them.

I think saying worshippers cannot communicate with deities is a little silly. Deities are appreciative of being honored by someone and will often take interest in those who do so. But like... anyone can pick up a divination method and talk to the gods. It's not something exclusive to people who work with deities. Otherwise, how else would you even START deity work if you have to work with them in the first place to talk to them???? I've had the opportunity to speak to a number of deities who I do NOT work with, do NOT worship and they pop up once or twice just to talk. It's super gatekeep-y in my opinion to suggest that only a specific practice has access to the gods when that's just not true?

Everyone's practice is of course different but that doesn't mean you can tell other practitioners what they can/can't do by your own personal set metrics.

We're going to start with the basics this month: Where did your Sidestep get your name? Do they know what it means? Do they feel any particular way about their name?

I had to hold off on this til I revealed my second sidestep cuz I have no idea how to answer this one for Corey yet lmao. so yeah here's some Chase lore

Chase is her regene name! Her role on missions was essentially stalking/tracking targets that knew they were being hunted and thus were being really evasive and hard to reach, and she took her job WAY too seriously. Unlike Corey, who was infamous for being a defiant shithead towards their handlers, she was known for being teacher's pet and always on her best behavior. So the other regenes she worked with on missions started referring to her by her job title as a not-so-subtle dig at how single minded she was about it. a sort of "this Ken's job is beach" joke

She knows they meant it mockingly, but she embraced it and still loves her name/wears it like a badge of honor. Shes proud of her past accomplishments (even if there was a brief sidestep era "oh god what have i done" phase). There was no hesitation about using that as her name when Ortega asked her for one.

She chose her last name after a conversation she had with Julia about tia Elena/ her choosing to go by Ortega. For better or worse, she viewed the director through a familial lens, so choosing "Siepen" as a surname was both a power move and a way of deflecting blame for her problems onto her. Very much a "you made me/raised me to be like this so if you dont like it, its your fault" sort of vibe.
