fic stats meme
tagged by @seamayweed. TY bb!!!! :D
rules: give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the least words.
most hits: Sleeping Beauty (thorki, smut, 6.2k words). One of my relatively early thorki fics from back in the kinkmeme days, full of somnophilia and various other kinks and delicious bottom!Thor with a side of Loki angst. (I bet I know why this one has a disproportionate number of hits to kudos. seems like it has a lot of. ah. reread value *waggles eyebrows*)
second-most kudos: Thunder and Other Things (thorki, 22.7k words). My take on the standard thorki arranged marriage with Jotun Loki trope... but because it's me writing it, he quickly gets Thor pregnant.
third-most comments: LMD (thorki+ (it's complicated), IW/EG AU-ish, 67k words). I guess it makes sense for one of my longer and serially posted fics to have lots of comments, even though it was written after the fandom had gotten so much quieter in recent years.
fourth-most bookmarks: Fimbulwinter (thorki, Wintersmith AU, 28.7k words). I still have a huge soft spot for this one. I love the way the story just seemed to be waiting to be uncovered, the way the roles just slipped over them, perfectly fitted. I love it when I get to play around with mythic references and resonances.
fifth-most words: What You Are in the Dark (thorki, horror, 37k words). One of my spookyfics, but one that started out from a single scene/concept of Thor getting consentacled by tentacle-monster Loki who was horrified by what his transformed body was doing, and it grew to a pretty sizeable story to explain that scene. Figuring out how to make that work was fun XD
least words: Two Thefts (Brothers Karamazov, Mitya/Alyosha, 100 words). It's a true drabble, what can I say? I come from old fandom where the art of drabbling was an important skill. Of course it's exactly 100 words long.
(Alternatively, if we stick with Thor fandom fics, it would be Jotun Thor Is Thor's Fursona, which is 377 words. I still recall hastily writing and posting it in response to a mutual's shitpost while getting ready to run out the door to head down to Comic-con and then not realizing how it had landed until I was able to actually sit down and scroll tumblr hours later XD good times, good times.)
Tagging anybody who wants to do it! Seriously, just say I tagged you. It's all good.

DVHS Reread: Chapter III.IV
"But if you think about it, isn't the timing too perfect?" I ask, trying not to look over at Fujimoto. It feels odd to be arguing about this when he's on the ground right next to me.
I 100% forgot I had Monokuma just leave him there. That’s so cruel.
"Well, you know what they say about assuming: it makes an ass out of you and me." Yoshida's eyes light up a bit at her own joke. "But yeah, what did he even use? We didn't find anything in his room."
I heard that saying for the first time in 11th grade, around when I started writing this, I think. Or maybe it was the next year I started? Time is an illusion.
"We can't go off of just that," Ikeda says after a second passes. "I've read that artists sometimes produce their most happy work when they're depressed and vice versa. Everything else points to him killing himself, and we're supposed to take the word of contextless lyrics?"
This came from a treasury of Pearls Before Swine comics with commentary by the creator, Stephan Pastis. He mentioned that some of his darker strips were drafted during happy points in his life.
"I did," Oshiro and I say at the same time. Which helps no one. We wedged into the doorway at the same time, so I guess there's no telling if we were the third and fourth people or the second and third.
I always find it confusing how the BDA rule of three is only in certain cases, so it’s easier to just have four when one of the first ones there could be the blackened.
"Just listen! Strangling is often done with rope-like objects, right? Using a thin wire like a guitar string would not have the same effect. It would cut into her neck, causing her to bleed out. The cause of death in that case would be called garroting." Yasu shifts so he's facing me. "Ishikawa, I told you before that there was nothing that could be the murder weapon in the storage. There was a wire tool that's used to cut clay in the storage drawer, but what I said was true: the cause of death would not be strangling like the file said if the wire tool was used."
I got this both from my mom and logic from Alex from Magnus Chase. Garroting and strangling are two different causes of death. My mom confirmed that using a guitar string would probably have the former cause of death rather than the latter. Which isn’t a sus thing for her to know, she’s a murder mystery fan, too, which is why I read this to her.
She turns to me, unnerving me with her vacant look. It's like she's possessed or something.
I love Oshiro
Ikeda shakes his head, his arms folded. "Isn't that a flimsy argument? There's nothing more that ties me to the crime scene other than speculation and thin arguments."
So true bestie it’s because I have a hard time making conclusive evidence.
What is she doing? That wasn't what he had at all. I would've known; eucalyptus is one of the only essential oils I can't stand. Not that anyone else checked the water. "Ishikawa, didn't you say it was lavender?" Ikeda checks. "I don't have lavender oil in my room."
It clicks when Yoshida smirks at me, victory in her eyes. "I never said it was lavender," I tell him slowly. "Apart from eucalyptus, I don't think I could've placed the scent accurately."
Noooooooo Saito said last chapter it was lavender I screwed myself over with this! Gosh darn it!
Oshiro shifts a little to the side, away from him. "Buuuuut we know that they were killed by the same person, and that that oil has something to do with it. And you were the one who slipped up. A frogleg slip!"
Abe coughs. "Freudian slip."
I. LOVE. OSHIRO.
"Is that it? Are we done?" Yasu asks, his voice somewhat strained. He's swaying a little on his feet. If I look hard, his skin looks a palish green.
~Foreshadowing~
"There wasn't-" I gasp. I was hallucinating Miyuki in there. So when Miyuki- the hallucination- said that she would stay there, she saved me. I talked to her and Ikeda thought I was talking to someone else, maybe Hamasaki or Fujimoto.
If I hadn't hallucinated, I would be dead now.
Idk there’s just something I love about that.
The more needles Monokuma puts in, the further in they go. A few of them draw blood; Ikeda goes pale at the sight. Is he going to bleed out?
Callback to that Ikeda does not like blood, hence why he carried out the first technically bloodless murder in DVHS. Also I think I said before he’s not the biggest fan of needles, either.
As if on cue, the PA sparks on. "It's- okay! Almost- hang- right!" The voice mutters, impossible to make out, then a different voice, another feminine one, takes over. "-hear us? -calm- get out-"
This broadcast is the first real clue into who’s there, since you now know it’s two girls.
"We'll stop it," I hear Yoshida assure Oshiro softly. It's the quietest I've heard her. She has her arm around Oshiro's shoulders, comforting. "I promise, okay?"
I am so sorry to all Oshiro fans because that promise, as you know, will not last long.
Yasu feels almost feverish below me. I sweep his hair out of his eyes gently. With how panicked Sasaki was before leaving, I can't help but wonder if we're going to be losing another friend today.
This was always planned for the end of this chapter. I figured this specific event would have a higher sense of urgency between updates more than post-trials usually have.

tuesday again 5/4/21
yeah yeah yeah may the fourth be with you whatever this is mostly me rambling disjointedly about the bits and pieces of star wars i crammed into my weekend
i think the star war that is the best-made and most watchable on a technical level (including script) is ESB. however, AOTC is my fuckin favorite bc there’s so much fucking nonsense happening all the the goddamn time. incoherent movie with too many sidequests but it all looks sick as shit
my personal history with star wars is: watched it (like many other movies) juuuuust a little too young with my dad as a Bonding Activity (to the silent fury of my mom) but unfortunately got Really Into It. reading expanded universe novels (nearly all of them, i have almost two hundred of them in boxes in a storage unit) was the thing that kept me alive through high school. never really got into the comics, didn’t pick up any of the post-disney-nuking-the-expanded-universe novels. was horribly disappointed by the sequel trilogy and solo. rogue one is all right. however, the mandalorian (weird and cheesy as it is, also i am not immune to pedro pascal) really got me back into this stupid fucking franchise. so i have been taking a rambling walk through things that i remembered liking. all my fun star wars facts are old and outdated but they sure all do live in my brain
listening ‘General Grievous’ off the ROTS soundtrack. this is i think the beginning of my love for heavy low rumbling undercurrents? would not say this has a ‘groove’ per se but there is definitely a forward momentum. love some ominous brass. love the williams panic-spike strings. LOVE A DANGER WARNING LEITMOTIF
god u listen to the original + prequel soundtracks and then listen to the sequel soundtracks (as i have been doing during working hours for the past week) and i get really sad. should have let him retire in peace. he doesn’t have a ton of gas left.
anyway this is the bit of the movie where obi-wan shows up on utapu (the cool sinkhole planet) with the big lizard bird to fight grievious btw. good fight. why does he flirt with the big robot man when he’s already in a enemies-to-lovers flirtationship with asaaj ventress RIGHT AFTER the duchess of mandalore died in his arms??? who can say. grief makes people do weird things.

reading rebel heist (2014, kindt & castiello). these are some of the few loose single-issue comics i own bc i love the covers so much. i hate dealing with bagged and boarded comics bc they’re a pain to store and they’re honestly a pain to read. gimme a trade paperback any day please. rereading these, i liked them less than i remembered- it’s a cool conceit of following an ordinary person in the rebellion as they get caught up in luke & leia & han & chewie’s schemes, and things of course do eventually turn out fine but not before all these regular people go UHHHH WHAT THE FUCK? WTF WTF WTF NOT WHAT I SIGNED UP FOR at some classic skywalker nonsense. can i just say how much i love these covers again tho
Tumblr media
watching star wars: the clone wars ran from 2008 to 2020. i watched the first six seasons with my siblings on starwars.com for most of its run, bc there was a brief period of time (i forget whether it was two days after or ten days after) when you could watch each episode for free and we didn’t have cable until well after i went to college.
the second season is where it really starts to hit its stride- i haven’t gone back to watch anything as an adult but i remember liking a lot of the episodes from this season. as an adult, it’s pretty horrifying to realize how fucking stupid the clone wars were from a loss of life and material gain standpoint.
there’s a two-episode arc about the zillo beast, a big kaiju critter, and i only had enough time to watch the first one. the have to protect the oil planet (sorry, i’m getting a note in) so sorry the FUEL RESERVES on the oil planet, so they drop a giant EMP two miles from the city center, but this isn’t a planet with people that look like humans so it’s fine! the important thing is that the fuel is okay.
anyway, this episode is lovely and moody- this is such a stiff-looking show and wreathing everything in cool purple mist and making sure the silhouettes look good is really doing a lot of the work here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
look i just really like this framing. the jedi on a stage above everyone else, waist-deep in blood already from the months-old war, the hint of an imperial symbol in the cannon dish, anakin & mace separated by an interior wall and separate hatches. i’m reading too much into season fucking two of the clone wars but i just think it’s neat.
Tumblr media
yes!!! starship fuel SHOULD be bright radioactive green!!! star wars is mostly about things looking sick as shit and it’s part of why i am the way i am now
Tumblr media
ok i fucked up on this last screenshot but look. LOOK. this is some peak nonsense right here love it. mwah. star wars is at its heart a melodramatic pulpy swashbuckling science fiction adventure and it gets weird when it forgets that
Tumblr media
playing i own fallen order bc it came for free with my pc but i have not cracked it open bc it seems like an assassains creed, a style of game that fucking infuriates me. also i own no other star wars games so this section left intentionally blank
making i make one of these things a year now i guess. this one is finally for me.

We’re a day late but here’s Go Go Power Rangers #4!  you’ll never guess what happens.  the rangers fight a monster.  but other stuff happens too
Tumblr media
- oh my god i forgot about this flashback.  that fourth panel......it’s so SAD but so GOOD ugh this is the Kimberly Hart personal drama i want more of instead of love triangle bulls[i am forcibly dragged offstage]
Tumblr media
- [i force myself back onstage] haha green olives
- but rereading this now i definitely have to say reading about a rich white family venting their frustrations at a black worker and getting him fired by his (also white) manager - and with the exception of Kimberly, showing no remorse beyond their dinner being spoiled - is mmmmmm. uncomfy!  and the fact we never saw how this was resolved or how they became friends is hhhhghghrhhghhh
Tumblr media
- kimberly hart murder face my beloved
Tumblr media
- you know, i’m not saying matt should have DIED, but.....if he had taken this opportunity to gracefully exit the series, it would save me a lot of future stress
Tumblr media
- SPEAKING OF NEVER RESOLVED HRHGHGHRHGH
- on a positive note i really love the coloring in these scenes, especially here.  the blue of billy’s suit on top of the dusty browns and oranges is [chef kiss]
Tumblr media
- ha. ha. ha.
Tumblr media
-  rita you can just admit you think it’s cool when they grow big
Tumblr media
- I LOVE ZACK BEING A BADASS AND USING HIS HEAD AND BEING THE LEADER YEAHHHHHHH THAT’S MY BOY
- (though as i’m writing this i’m realizing that out of context this just looks like Zack is telling Billy to shoot the power lines for no reason dydkjfkd IT’S ACTUALLY A SMART PLAN I SWEAR)
Tumblr media
- this page still slaps so hard dan more you BEAST
Tumblr media
- kim casually being like “hey let’s leave a dismembered corpse at our enemy’s door” i love her sm.  this is why you grew up to be an assassin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- this is really sweet but at the same time something’s kinda funny about people being like “well we’re gonna have to deal with giant monsters now but we have a giant robot on standby ready to punch them out so i guess we’ll stay.”  civilians in the toku/pr universe are the most resilient humans ever conceived
Tumblr media
- THIS IS SO SWEET TOO TRINI AND HER MOM ARE THE CUTEST
- see when i say i miss the personal connections, the heartwarming character stuff.....this is what i mean.  same with the next page
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- THIS IS SO GOOD!!!!  THIS is what i miss from the comics - personal drama can be fun but it shouldn’t diminish what makes Power Rangers as a franchise succeed - that they’re good people who care about others; who don’t let petty squabbles and contrived bitterness override their friendships or relationships - because they’re friends first and rangers second!  i’m pretty sure there’s an annual story that spells this out word for word
- oh i guess on the last page matt's shown captured by rita but i don’t care because PUTTY MATT IS HEEEEERE THE BEST CHARACTER

I like me better when I’m with you.
Tumblr media
Okay so! I never considered writing on this blog, but I just had the cutest idea e v e r and I decided to do something about it. I used to write a lot but I stopped to publish anything years ago. Maybe it’s time to come back. Who knows! For now I just wanted to see if someone would like it! English is not my first language so pretty, pretty please forgive me if you find any mistakes :(
summary: based on ‘To All The Boys I Loved Before’. Y/N Henderson used to be in love a couple of times. This time she’s sure it’s something bigger, something serious. Her love for Jonathan Byers is unlimited, untamed and endless. At least she thought so. You can read Part 2 Here.
-
We knew that it was wrong. That he was betrothed to my best friend. But if this isn’t what he wanted then why did he come to the field of desire? It was faded,  that we should meet like this. So when his lips touch my neck to put a gentle kiss on it…
“Mom asks you to wash the dishes” Dustin was standing in the doorway of your room, smiling silly. He presented his full teeth with pride, moving his eyebrows in a funny way. “It’s not my turn” you said and slowly turned over a page of book your brother interrupted you from reading. “Yours, if you’re planning on going out with Nancy and Jonathan today” he shrugged his shoulders innocently. “Excuse me?” you turned your head so fast that your neck hurt. “Says who?”
“Says me. You forced me to vacuum last week when I wanted to go to the arcade, but it was your turn. So if you don’t want to be late, you better hurry”  “I hate you” you sighned putting the book down. You ran you fingers through the cover of it with two lovers, leaning towards each other just before the kiss. Dustin was still standing in the doorway.
“Do they not mind when you are going to their dates?” He asked suddenly. “They don’t call it ‘dates’ when I’m with them. They have time for each other, but we’re still friends. Just because they’re together doesn’t mean… that I’ll stop being their friend” you said. “Whatever you say. I think that’s weird. Totally weird. I wouldn’t want to take Mike or Lucas or Will if I wanted to meet my girl”. “No one asked for your opinion, you abominable little shit!” you screamed going to the kitchen, aggressively putting plates in the sink. They didn’t deserve such terrible treatment, but Dustin was right. It was weird. Weird as fuck.
After the infamous party at Tina’s last Halloween night, when Nancy broke up with Steve Harrington, and rumours about them didn’t go silent for a good month she and Jonathan became extremely close. You always spent time with them separately. When Nancy and her boyfriend wanted to be alone, you would watch movies on the couch at Joyce Byers’ house. When Jonathan promised Will to take him for a ride in the car listening to The Clash, Nancy combed your hair as Donna Summer filled her room with her songs. But after Halloween, everything changed. Nancy started sitting between you and Jonathan as you guys were watching ‘The Shining’ with a bowl of popcorn. And Jonathan knew ‘I Feel Love’ by heart, although he hated Donna Summer. Something was wrong. Something was diffrent.
By Christmas, everyone was sure that Jonathan and Nancy started dating. They spent Christmas Eve together and then announced their relationship to you together. And that’s not when your heart started beating faster when you saw him. Not when they were holding hands, not when they kissed every time before the car started from the driveway when they came to your house. Not until Nancy Wheeler took your seat on the couch at Joyce’s house. It wasn’t until then that something unimaginable, something wrong happened, something that should never have happened. You started to have, a little, small, tiny crush on your best friend.
And it wasn’t that you were jealous of Nancy. She was a great girl, smart and deserving of a wise, loving boy, which Jonathan was. But the heart is a treacherous tool. You could leave it with a cat for a month, thinking everything would be all right, and when you get back, you’d find that it threw it out the window. Because it can never be trusted. Admitting your feelings was not an option. You could lose Nancy or Jonathan. Well, Robin and Dustin would still be staying by your side, of course, but losing someone close hurts too much. Too much to be dealt with by an organ that throws the cat out the window. So smiling is okay, pretending everything’s okay is okay. As long as no one guesses and stupid feelings go away.
Not for the first time, right?
“Y/N, honey, what are you still doing here? Jonathan’s here” Mom came to the kitchen. “Ask the youngest” you rolled my eyes and kissed her on the cheek, running out of the house. Nancy pressed the alarm button a couple of times, dropping the window on the passenger side. “I don’t think you’re so excited to see Jason Voorhees for the fourth time since you’re two minutes late” she said, putting her wrist with the watch on it out the window.
“Maybe if my brother weren’t such a troublesome goddamn gremlin, you guys wouldn’t have to wait for so long” you fastened your belt and smiled at Jonathan. “Tell me about it” Nancy rolled her eyes. Her hand was clenching on Jonathan’s hands, their intertwined fingers were on his thigh. He was probably just letting her go to change gear, to grab her hand back, wanting to touch her. You smiled slightly to yourself. “I’m a little offended” you hit the back of Nancy’s chair a little bit. “You questioned my love for Jason, knowing he’s the man of my dreams. I wouldn’t miss this movie now or ever”.
“Man, you have a strange taste in men” Jonathan twisted his head.
Oh boy, if you only knew.
“Who’s gonna pick them for you when I’m out of college?” Nancy said quietly. When you were a year younger than them, you had to reckon they would be gone soon, but the thought still was terrible. You opened the window and put my hand out, feeling the cold wind on your fingers. “Robin’s doing great” you smiled. “She likes Michael Myers”.
“I’m begging you. He’s not even half as terrible as Freddie” Jonathan rolled his eyes. “Yeah, and my father is Stephen King” you snorted. Nancy smiled a little. “And Robin’s driving terribly” Jonathan got ripped off. “Whatever my life depends on it, I’d rather give my car to Carol Perkins, she can at least turn around.
“I gotta get off so you two can both stop making fun of her?” “Oh no. We don’t want Jason to get you here… on a dark road… near the woods…” Nancy wiped out and turned to you with her hands ready to attack. You hit her hands to turn around so she didn’t even think to touch or tickle you. “You can ride with me” Jonathan shrugged his arm. “I like Robin, but your life is in danger when she’s behind the wheel. I’m not going anywhere yet.”
There it was. The stomach’s fickles, the heat on your cheeks and the smile and the awful awareness of how wrong it was. How inappropriate and how unfair it was to Nancy, who sat so close to you, that she could count your moles if she turned around. But before she even thought about him, he was yours. Not exactly, of course. But when Will went missing, he didn’t turn to her for help first. He wasn’t at her door in the middle of the night, rambling about how his mom is getting crazy. He was always a lonely ship drifting in the dark sea, and you were his anchor, which drifted in time to hold him.
Well, once Jason had killed everyone he was supposed to kill, and for most of the movie, Jonathan and Nancy spent most of the time giggling and whispering to each other, after looking at their inseparably intertwined hands, it was time to go home.
It’s not that you wanted to steal your best friend’s boyfriend. You were super happy for Nancy. She deserves a great guy like Jonathan. So it was time for another letter. Fifth, if you believe your stupid heart. “How’s the movie?” Dustin asked when I walked by his room. He was only wearing one sock and reading a comic book. “Didn’t you faint from the excess corn syrup blood?”
“I’m not you” you showed him your tongue. “I didn’t forget about the dishes!” “Oh, you did! The pan is still dirty!” Dustin screamed, but I already locked the door to my room and sat at my desk, hiding my face in my hands. After a few awfully long seconds and listening to the bang of an owl outside the window, I pulled the card out of the drawer looking for a black pen.
Dear Jonathan Byers…
These letters are your biggest secret. You weren’t going to send the letter, it was just for you to understand how you were feeling. But really, you guess it was mainly about how sometimes you imagined what it would’ve been like if you’d realized how you felt about them sooner. To all of them. There are five of them: Chris from summer camp, Stanley from the homecoming, Ralph from the neighborhood who lived across the street for just three months, Steve Harrington from high school, and Jonathan.
You’ve seen Chris once in you life, for two weeks in the riverside forest. Stanley was the only one who asked you to dance, seeing you sitting alone on a bench. Ralph moved into Hawkins a few years ago, but his parents decided to go back to Florida. Steve… well, he became quite a different person when you went to high school. And Jonathan… Jonathan is still an infinite chapter. A chapter in book that’s too beautiful to finish reading it early.
You write a letter when you have a crush so intense that you don’t know what else to do. Rereading your letters reminds you of how powerful your emotions can be, how all-consuming. You hide them between the vinyls on a shelf above the bed, where no one will ever find them. Robin would say you’re being dramatic, but drama can be fun…
“What are you doing?” Dustin asked suddenly, entering the room without knocking. “Nothing” you smiled, covering the unfinished part of the letter with your elbow. “Your room is a mess” brother looked around. “And listen, about that pan-”
“Good night, Dustin. I hope you will be dreaming of something nice” you smiled sweetly, showing him the way out. It wasn’t until he left that you finished pouring your feelings onto the paper that you put the letter into the envelope, addressed it and put it between the vinyl, where there were four similar envelopes. Each one was for another boy, who would always be a part of you.
Yeah, drama can be fun. Just as long nobody else knows about it.
-
“So you’re telling me” Robin stopped halfway down the track. She didn’t care about getting a pass at the PE, anyway, you too. The coach sent you an indulgent look, and your friend just shrugged her shoulders. The other girls ran past you, rubbing your shoulders, but besides that, they didn’t pay much attention to you. “That they were on another date, taking you with them again? Why don’t you just say no to them?”
“I don’t know” Robin groaned and grabbed her side. “What’s going on?” “My body reacts badly to physical effort” she muttered and sat on the treadmill, pulling her legs out. “Some running won’t hurt you” Becky Miller snorted, running alongside us. “Running is humiliating” Robin didn’t even look at her. “Dude, you have to stop this. Every fucking time you come to me and tell me how badly you’re feeling, you’re the one who’s responsible for it. Tell him finally how you feel. Nothing’s gonna happen. There will be no earthquake. The aliens won’t find their way to Earth. And you will finally fall asleep and free yourself from that strange triangle”.
“I don’t want it to be weird between us” you shruged your shoulders.”If I push them off, I’ll start losing them. They’ll find that the two of us are actually better off and… forget how cool it used to be.”
“That’s why relationships sucks” Robin moaned and grabbed your hand. Coach had already started walking towards us, but he was still far away. “But hey… Nancy is your friend. Jonathan is your friend. They care about you. They love you. Maybe not as much as I do, but they do. You don’t have to worry. Everything’s gonna be okay, just… just don’t let it break you. Okay?”
“Okay” you smiled. Robin smiled too and turned her back, frowning her eyebrows. “What’s Harrington doing here? He’s all sweaty and, oh, my God, he looks gross, but shouldn’t he have basketball practice now?”
“Hey, Henderson!” Steve has spoken to you. You lifted your head and swallowed. Steve hasn’t talked to you since you guys were thirteen. Damn thirteen. “On a scale from one to ten, how bad this looks like?” you asked when your hands started shaking. “I’m hovering somewhere in the high thirties” Robin responded quietly, standing up. “Me?” you made sure and Steve nodded his head. His hair was in terrible disarray, but although it was wet and stuck to his forehead, it still looked impressive. He wasn’t angry or upset, which was good, but… but he didn’t look happy either.
“If you need me, I’ll be in the nurse’s office” Robink winked and walked away.  “Look, I just wanted to say that I really…” Steve licked his lips and wiped his forehead with the palm of his hand. What the hell was going on here. “Goddamn, this is the first time I’ve been in situation like this… I appreciate it, but it’s never gonna happen”.
“I’m sorry, what?” You asked. Why did Robin have to leave? Why did she have to leave you? “From what I remember that kiss was hot, you know, for being in seventh grade” Steve said slowly, leading the eye somewhere outside of you, just to avoid looking you in the eye. “And I think it’s really cool you think I have golden specks in my eyes. And that my hair is gorgeous. But this is a strange moment for me… I just broke up with Nancy, you know… Becky is… she’s fine, she seems fine. I may not be ready at all…”
You stopped listening to him and looked at his hands. You don’t know what you expected, maybe they will shake as much as yours, but no. He was holding the envelope. A white, slightly old envelope, with his name written with your writing. With your pen. And your hand.
“At first I thought it was just Dustin’s stupid joke, but that dipshit probably doesn’t even know how to write…” Steve kept on talking, but your mind was somewhere else. It went all the way from school to your house, tossing the whole room in it’s memory, wondering hhow did the letters get in sight. How did they even reach the people they were never supposed to reach?
“I don’t want to be an asshole, and I certainly don’t want you… I don’t know, to feel bad about it, but…” Steve’s voice was drilling into your brain, and your stomach started to shrink painfully. Maybe it’d have managed, if it wasn’t for the fact that Jonathan was just going to the pitch, and he also was holding the envelope.
Oh, no.

Oh, no.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO: The Unexpected Task
I know what a guinea pig is but what is a guinea fowl?? Ok I just looked it up and it’s a turkey looking chicken thing
Of course Neville’s still had feathers
Lol, Professor McGonagall, if you want Harry and Ron to act their age you’re going to be disappointed since that’s what fourteen year olds do, they fool around doing dumb things in class constantly
“Lavender Brown let out a shrill giggle. Parvati Patil nudged her hard in the ribs, her face working furiously as she too fought not to giggle. They both looked around at Harry, Professor McGonagall ignored them, which Harry thought was distinctly unfair, as she had just told off him and Ron.” Lol, way to be subtle Lavender and Parvati. Also, way to be dense Harry.
See, I always assumed that dress robes were a thing that existed before Harry Potter, I never realised that they don’t actually exist in the real world
“‘Your partners for the Yule Ball, Potter,’ she said coldly. ‘Your dance partners.’ Harry’s insides seemed to curl up and shrivel.” Same
It is wild that he didn’t think about the girls at Hogwarts until this point
It’s actually even worse for Harry because everyone actually knows him, everyone’s going to be interested in who he’s going to take, or who’s going to reject him. The poor boy can’t catch a break.
Ok they need to be nicer about the girls asking him to the ball, at least they had the balls to do it (ba dum tss) and the same can’t be said for either Ron or Harry
Draco is just plain obsessed with Harry. Quoting Rita Skeeter’s article?? Really???The boy memorised an article just so he could quote it to Harry?? OBSESSED.
Aww Flitwick spent their last class of the term talking to Harry about the perfect summoning charm. Do you think Harry reminded him of Lily in that moment since she was so good at charms as well?? Am I reading too much into this?
“Ron was busy building a card castle out of his Exploding Snap pack - a much more interesting pastime than with Muggle cards, because of the chance that the whole thing would blow up at any second.” Ok but at that point would it be interesting? Or just plain annoying?
“‘Who’re you going with, then?’ said Ron. ‘Angelina,’ said Fred promptly, without a trace of embarrassment. ‘What?’ said Ron, taken aback. ‘You’ve already asked her?’ ‘Good point,’ said Fred. He turned his head and called across the common room, ‘Oi! Angelina!’ Angelina, who had been chatting with Alicia Spinnet near the fire, looked over at him. ‘What?’ she called back. ‘Want to come to the ball with me?’ Angelina gave Fred an appraising sort of look. ‘All right, then,’ she said, and she turned back to Alicia and carried on chatting with a bit of a grin on her face.” Iconic
I know I’ve said “Hermione’s got a point” one too many times here but she really does!! It’s not my fault that she does!!
Also if Harry had built up the nerve earlier instead of putting it off for later, he might’ve beaten Cedric to asking out Cho
Oh Harry, good luck… I’m getting secondhand anxiety from this
“Wangoballwime” good stuff Harry, that’ll get her to fall in love with you
Oh sweet Lord make it go away
“Now he suddenly realized that Cedric was in fact a useless pretty boy who didn’t have enough brains to fill an eggcup.” Good Lord, that was unnecessary and vicious Harry
If Fleur had actually gone with Ron to the ball, all three of them would have been opening the ball for everyone lol
Ooh, I wonder why Fleur was talking to Cedric
Ohh, she just wanted to ask Cedric to the ball, nevermind
“‘I asked her to go with me just now,’ Harry said dully, ‘ and she told me.’ Ginny had suddenly stopped smiling.” I NEVER NOTICED THAT SENTENCE ABOUT GINNY BEFORE!! I thought she was just really sad that they both were so pathetic. Or just that Harry was rejected. I don’t know why I didn’t realise, of course it was because she liked Harry still! OF COURSE!
Oh and earlier she was fighting back a smile when she was consoling Ron so I guess when she stopped smiling I just assumed that she definitely felt bad for Harry. I thought because she liked Harry that she felt bad for him since he got rejected by Cho. What an idiot I am.
NEVILLE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO’S ASKED SOMEONE HE ACTUALLY KNOWS AND CARES ABOUT LIKE HERMIONE. It’s his own bad luck that he was too late which is sad.
Awfully presumptuous of you to think that Hermione only told Neville that so that she didn’t have to go with him, she’s not you Ron
Thanks for sticking up for him Ginny!
“‘Because - oh shut up laughing, you two - because they’ve both just been turned down by the girls they asked to the ball!’ said Ginny. That shut Harry and Ron up.” Thank you Ginny.
Oh Ron, you’ve really done it now
Oh SNAP! Neville already asked Ginny! She could’ve gone with Harry but she missed it by that much! I mean sure, it would’ve been a little weird since it was by Ron’s suggestion, but still!! I think it’s good that she didn’t though because the Yule ball ended up sucking for everyone. Maybe if it had gone this way it might’ve not sucked? Who knows.
“‘I’m going with - with Neville. He asked me when Hermione said no, and I thought… well… I’m not going to be able to go otherwise, I’m not fourth year.’ she said, and she got up and walked off to the portrait hole, her head bowed.” See, anyone who hasn’t finished the series would’ve thought that she was miserable because she was going with Neville and everyone was going to make fun of her. To a wise person like myself however (who only just noticed this, some 13-14 years after reading and rereading the book) it’s because she was so close to going to the ball with Harry, it’s actually comical how close she came to that happening. That’s why she’s miserable. It’s like something out of a sitcom.
I guess Harry isn’t as dense as I thought?
Poor Padma Patil
Padma Patil’s nose doesn’t have to be dead center, Ron’s head just needs to get out of his ass.
I’ve only just realised what ‘The Unexpected Task’ was lol

Thinking about All the Other Ghosts
So - I just finished up Rainjoy’s All the Other Ghosts for the podcast episodes that @notthatbea and I will be doing...
This is the first time in a long, long time that I read it and really, really read it.  Rainjoy’s writing can be so dense at times that you really have to pay attention, so sometimes you can reread the thing and only catch certain things, or only read elements or chapters you really liked.  But this was interesting.  To read it on a really analytical and academic level.
Of course, I’ll be going super into it on the podcast - but just to get the thoughts out of my brain.
I’m partially torn??  It was both a rewarding and tedious project to do.
Some (opinionated and therefor possibly alienating and polarizing) thoughts...
The bad:
The characterization of Kurt and Blaine is just /off/.  RJ obviously took a left turn from season 2 and never looked back.
Kurt was female coded nearly the whole way through - to the point that sometimes he felt more like a woman than a man or even someone who walks that line (or is gender fluid), and there’s a lot of strange things about gender that I think unintentionally come up - because I think Kurt becomes a stand in for a lot of (understandable) issues that RJ felt passionate about, and passionate writing about.  Some of it fixed itself the more women characters were introduced in the story.  Still... the whole thing went in an odd direction when it came to Kurt that I don’t fully know how to unpack other than - this doesn’t feel like Kurt.
Meanwhile, Blaine, by default, gets the masculine role - and Blaine doesn’t feel like Blaine either.
Is it weird to say that I think the weakest element of this phenomenal fanfic about Klaine is Kurt and Blaine themselves?
This whole story makes me question the line of - how far can you go AU before it hits original fiction?
The sheer repetitiveness of inner monologues.   I’m not judging fanfiction lack of editing because people do this for free and out of love, so this really isn’t a criticism per se.  But I feel like about 1/5 of the story could have been taken out, and the story would have been just fine.
I’m going to praise her writing in a minute but, besides the repetitive thing - sometimes there were sections that were almost too vague.  Like? What is the action going on in this sequence? How did we get from point A to B?  Sometimes the imagery is too fuzzy to get a clear picture, and sometimes a plot point is in a single sentence buried around a lot of other things going on that it can be easily missed.  And every once in a while, I’m not even sure what was going on.  (Again - it needed an overall editor, but I get why it didn’t, really no judgment, I swear!)
I think the beginning-middle-ish section 5-15 suffered from dragging along.  Fanfiction doesn’t need to have any kind of structure but I think this particular story worked better when it was working towards the goal of its plot more than the repetitive introspection of the characters.  (And I don’t think introspection is a bad thing either - I just think there were parts that felt like the story was spinning its wheels because it was waiting to get to a certain point.)
The Good:
RJ is a phenomenal story teller.  Really, besides my gripes up there - she has a great eye for detail and atmosphere.  When she does describe something and its clear, you can really feel the emotion and reality of what’s going on.  She can suck you in with the words and make you feel like you’re right there - and that’s pretty impressive.
She’s (mostly) great with structure.  She understands story telling, and the reason I’ve been so fascinated to look at this one in depth is because it works beyond how fanfiction usually works and is an actual novel, a structured traditional narrative.
She really understand fandom.  Really understands it, and is able to use it, not only as a fourth-wall breaking, meta commentary on it, but can use it as a narrative function as well.  It’s possibly the best thing about the story, tbh.
She really understands the superhero genre.  Again, really understands it.  She knows how the tropes work, and I’m guessing is either super into the films or really does read comics and understands how they work.  This fic hits all the tropes and does them very well - maybe even better than some actual comics I’ve read over the years.
She really understands symbolism, allegory, and multi-layered story telling.  There is a lot going on in this story to unpack that goes beyond just the plot of the story, or even understanding Kurt and Blaine’s emotional journey together.   I don’t expect every story I read to have lots of shades of grey going on, but man fanfic doesn’t usually have it, and even published fiction doesn’t always get as complex as this, so I find it fascinating.
She really understands world building, and while fanfic can give you a template to start off with, she was able to mold that template into something uniquely her own.
The main plot (that wasn’t the Kurt and Blaine emotional arc) was incredibly well done (when the story picked up on it).  It’s intriguing and specific to Glee, but molding it into something of its own, which is incredibly impressive.  It’s almost like a perfect crossover without being an actual crossover.  She handles that AU elements very well, as well as having the plot itself be incredibly engaging.
While I do have criticisms with the characterization, I think she handled the emotional arcs of Kurt and Blaine (mostly) well - and I appreciate that it wasn’t a slow burn, but a journey of figuring out who you are with your partner, which in this story’s case, is the better story to tell.
The side characters were pretty well done.  Except for Burt, who I’m meh about, I think the other characters were great.  Finn and Rachel are better than their canon counterparts.  Cooper has more depth to him.  Mike, Tina, the other little cameos, well done, imo.  She even was able to bring in a few original characters and make them work - which is always tricky in a fanfic.
She was able to fold in enough Glee-ish things that it still felt connected (in unique ways) to canon.  When you trip over little tidbits that are nods to canon, it doesn’t seem out of place or gratuitous, but handled really well.
So yeah - that’s where I’m at with ATOG - and like I said, we’ll discuss it more in-depth on the podcast.
Still.. It’ll be interesting getting into Grey, which I think is both better than worse than the original?

June Wrap Up | 2018
This was a really great month for reading. I read sixteen books and once again I have to reblog this post to fit all the tags in. A lot of them were great. Some of them were absolute trash but most were pretty good.
The first book I read was One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus:
Tumblr media
Okay so I enjoyed this book but I had some major problems with it. Mostly because the crux of the conflict relies on things that are completely illogical. Teachers practice illegal(ish) searches and seizure that wouldn’t fly by any judge or education administration. An app that caused someone to attempt suicide is not immediately taken down. Author writing a book about crime doesn’t know about the two party recording consent laws. It’s frustrating and yet was enjoyable. I think McManus can write a good mystery and I liked her characters. She just needs to work on her plots. I gave this book a three out of five stars.
Then I read The Wicker King by K. Ancrum:
Tumblr media
I don’t really know how to feel about this book. Partly anxiety because of all the mental health stuff and medical stuff. I thought Jack and August’s relationship was pretty toxic and not very healthy. I’m not really into the super edgy, angsty, life-fucking-sucks style of books but it wasn’t bad. I enjoyed reading this. It kept me going. I think I liked the side characters more. The twins, Rina and Alex mostly. So I guess I’m giving this four out of five stars.
Next, I caved and bought the next volume of A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki Oima:
Tumblr media
So, in this book Shoya gets Shoko to reunite with the girl who tried to learn sign language in sixth grade. That was really nice. She’s kind of a bland character though. Then we get the re-introduction of Naoka. Who’s still a bitch. She’s an interesting character and it’ll be interesting to see if she shows up again and has any development. But the big tear jerking in this story is when Shoko admits to loving Shoya but he doesn’t understand her. And it’s so sad. Ughhhhh…I’m probably going to buy the next one. Wasn’t as good as the last two but still five out of five stars.
Then I read the fourth volume of A Silent Voice:
Tumblr media
Ahhhh so many emotions in this one. First Shoya gets more friends. There’s Satoshi Mashiba is a hottie. Then Naoka planned for Shoya to see one of his childhood friends. I’m guessing at some point he’s actually going to talk to Kazuki. But the big thing that happened in this one was that Shoko’s grandma died. It was really sad and we got to see Shoko’s mother’s backstory and it made me tear up. I just want someone to help out this poor woman. My favorite so far! Five out of five!
Then I finished but did not complete the Summer I Turned Pretty bind up by Jenny Han:
Tumblr media
I read the first two books in this bind up but rage quit the last one after five chapters. The first book was fun. Belly was a snot and is written like a 10 year old instead of a sixteen year old. However, I liked the rest of the characters and wanted to see what would happen to them. I gave that four out of five stars. Then I went onto the next book hoping that Belly got better. She did not. She got worse. She’s such a bitch to her parents in this book, especially to her mother. Belly says some awful things to her mother and I don’t even think she apologizes for it. Conrad also starts to act like a little snot. He just leaves school without telling his brother. They also don’t do the most logical and correct answer which is to call Belly’s mom and ask her for help. That was my first instinct and it takes them forever to figure it out. And it’s only when Belly drunk calls her mom. God this book was so bad. Two out of five. Then I tried to read the third book but it was just Belly being a bitch to Jeremiah and Jeremiah kind of cheating on Belly. DNF’ed. Will not be reading any more Jenny Han books.
Next, I finally reread Cress by Marissa Meyer:
Tumblr media
I still can’t believe how well this series has held up. There are a few logic problems like Cinder presses her metal hand onto her face to “cool off”. Marissa, I don’t press my face to the roof of my car to cool off. Also Kai is kind of more annoying than I remember him being. However, I still really enjoying this series. I like the dynamic Cress adds and I teared up when Erland died. I also really liked Winter small roll. She’s such a fun character. Jacin was also amusing. I give this book five out of five stars.
I think picked up Aru Shah and the End of Time by Roshani Chokshi:
Tumblr media
This book was pretty good. I was a little bit skeptical going in and I did end up having a few problems with it. The humor didn’t always land and it was a little too similar to the Lightning Thief. However, I think this series has potential and there were a lot of cool elements that I really enjoyed and I’m excited to see where this series goes. I gave this book four out of five stars.
I felt like going back to A Silent Voice and read the fifth, sixth and final volume:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fifth one was a little underwhelming. I still gave it four stars but it mostly focused on the movie plot which isn’t my favorite thing. I did like getting to know more about Mashiba who is my favorite even if he is a little…intense. Also Shoko might have attempted suicide at the so it was a real cliffhanger. Get it? Then the sixth one was a bit better. It’s starts off with Shoko’s mother apologizing to Shoya’s mother and it’s really sad. Also Nao just starts beating the shit out of Shoko and then Shoko’s mother fights back which was really awesome. We saw that Satoshi was bullied for his…eyebrows and is super creepy about it. Then we get kind of Shoko’s perspective on things. Not my favorite but I enjoyed it. Five out of five stars. Then I finally read the 7th and last volume. This was a nice ending to the series. You had the mothers getting drunk and becoming friends. Shoko and Shoya both want to become hairdressers. And they’re eventually going to Tokyo together? It’s a nice, hopeful ending. I gave it five out of five stars.
Next, I read The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert:
Tumblr media
This book was Every Heart a Doorway but done better. I still didn’t love this book. I gave it three stars. I just don’t like this type of super cynical tone. It just annoys me. However I thought the world and how the Hinterland worked was pretty awesome. I also liked the twist that Alice was Alice-Three-Times and Ella had plucked her from the story. Finches character kind of bugged me. Overall I gave this book three out of five stars. I won’t be continuing on with this series but I may check out another Albert book.
Then the newest volume of Tokyo Ghoul: re by Sui Ishida came out:
Tumblr media
I enjoyed this one. I wasn’t expect an all out fight. In this Shu’s family is discovered of being a bunch of ghouls so there’s a big fight. Sen/Bandage girl got Kanae and made him crazy…er, crazier. There’s a really great seen between Akira and Kaneki where she hugs him. I’m pretty sure Amon’s out there somewhere. Lots of people die, including Hairu who was really cute. Then a random monster came at the end. Overall it wasn’t the best fight ever but I still enjoyed it Five out of five stars.
I decided to order Volume Two of Teen Titans so I reread the first volume Teen Titans: Damien Knows Best by Benjamin Percy:
Tumblr media
Why read new books when I can reread comics? Also god I love the art in the first issue. I wish the art had stayed that way. But I did like the art in the last issue. I think the rest is fine but man that first issue is great. I really love this team dynamic. All the different personalities and powers. It’s so cool. And I’m a sucker for the heroes versus their opposites. It’s great. I wonder when we’ll see Mara and the Demon’s Fist again. Five out of five stars.
A few days later Teen Titans Vol. 2: The Rise of Aqualad by Benjamin Percy came out:
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed this book. I’m a little sad that Aqualad’s personality and backstory is completely different but he still has the same Young Justice design. However, I still think he’s a really interesting character. I like his arc with his father. I really liked Kid Flash and Raven’s relationship and wish we saw more of it. But the thing I really liked was Star Fire taking charge. She’s my favorite character and honestly the best leader for this team. Hopefully we’ll see more of her doing this in the future. This book got five out of five stars as well.
Then, I read Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor:
Tumblr media
This took me like 10 days to read despite the fact that I really enjoyed it. I kept getting distract by shorter books. I really enjoyed this book. I liked Karou having to work with the White Wolf. Thiago is such a great villain and I’m glad he died. I’m sad that Hazael died and wish he would have stuck around. He gave the angel trio a fun dynamic. I’m interested to read the next book. It’s going to be a lot of battling but hopefully not a lot of “Will Karou and Akiva get together???” Because they will.
And those are all the books I read in June! It was a great month and I’m now onto July!

blush, cute, kitty, love, prince, rainbow, smitten, snuggle, sparkle, sunshine
i fell asleep before i could answer these bc i’m a sleepy baby. whoops. but asks aren’t milk they don’t go bad if you leave em out overnight so here we go
blush; what was your stuffed animal as a child?
I had many. In fact I still buy a lot of stuffed animals. But the most important was a stuffed turtle I got when I was 9. It’s kind of a sob story but I was in and out of the hospital constantly from late 2008-early 2009, and my first visit while I was lying weak from a procedure in the emergency room, my mom went down to the gift shop (it was Children’s Hospital Boston, which if you’ve never been there–and I hope to God you haven’t–it’s huge.) and picked me up a few toys that evening. One was a stuffed turtle I named Shelley (i’d like to say it’s for percy but obviously i was not that cultured when i was in fourth grade). I brought her to every subsequent emergency room trip, including when I got sick again in middle school, and AGAIN a few years ago. I’m not gonna take a picture but she’s lying on my bed w me right now. Yep. Shelley’s the one.
cute; what did you get on your last birthday?
Lol I was in rehab at the time actually. I didn’t talk much while I was there (social anxiety makes it like that) but one girl who overheard that it was my birthday asked me “are you gonna go home and do something special?” and I was like “idk maybe my mom got a cake or something.”
No I haven’t taken my birthday that seriously in years. It’s just kind of another day for me. I think that last time I did anything was back when I was a little prodigy recluse (I was sick again and out of school at the time) when I turned thirteen, I had lunch with my twin sister (whose birthday it obviously also was) and our best friend. When I turned sweet sixteen it was the first day of spring break and I stayed in my house and ate a bag of white chocolate on my bed because I had gotten my heart properly broken for the first time. And this year I received a lot of lovely messages. That was it.
kitty; what’s your favorite time of the day?
It depends on my sleep schedule. I like staying up late and being by myself (as long as it’s not forced staying awake by insomnia) and waking up early and being by myself.
love; what is your favorite season and why?
I know it’s sad but I never gave a damn about the weather. I don’t like any of them. I find winter the best because everything’s dead and no one expects me to go outside for fun.
prince; how would you describe your handwriting?
Just… messy. My fourth grade teacher preferred my cursive handwriting to my print (because my print was messy and my cursive was restrained and pain-stakingly practiced) and she used to just make me, in particular write everything in cursive while everyone else could write in print. So because of that I started drifting towards more cursive-style connecting my letters even when I was writing in print. And now it’s like… I don’t even know if I have the right to say I write in print ever? Almost every letter is connected, but it’s not proper cursive. And I know proper cursive. Sometimes I switch to it for just a word if it’s easier. I haven’t written “of” in print since I was like thirteen. When I was ten I was going through this really intense “I need to make myself girlier so people will like me” phase and in between buying like 20 tubes of lip smacker and shopping at justice, and convincing myself that if I just combed my hair instead of brushing it it would look all straight like my best friend’s and Jane Asher’s, I tried for a few months to write in that stereotypical “girly handwriting” that’s very blocky and straight. Yeah. It naturally shifted back into its course. I wish I could take pictures of my own handwriting for my poetry blog because I think it would look very Personal but the problem is it’s just so illegible what’s the point.
rainbow; what was the last line of the last book you read?
The last book I finished was either rereading Lady Windermere’s Fan for the thousandth time, or the Tempest for the first. I can’t remember because I’m always reading more than one book at a time. Of the Tempest is this lovely monologue (linking it to Marianne Faithfull’s reading from the end of her 1995 album A Secret Life because she’s lovely and actually does a great version of it, but my rant about how the songs from the Tempest are performed now to be “modern” will wait for another day).Of the Fan, it is Lady Windermere exclaiming “Ah! You’re marrying a very good woman.”
smitten; do you collect anything?
Anything of mine that might be called a “collection” is really more a result of happenstance than purpose. My CD collection is mostly old stuff I’m meaning to sell by now, my DVD collection is mostly movies I’d watch w my sister, and comics are really only a thing I collect because that’s… just how you read comics. I have a bunch of old diaries from 2008-2015 and I don’t plan on parting w those, I guess they could count as a collection. Or all my poetry notebooks from over the years. But again, that’s just how ya write.
snuggle; what is your favourite candy?
I like chocolate of almost any kind. Cotton candy is also really good.
sparkle; do you wear jewelry?
Naah I have ADHD. When I was in my earlier teen years I always wanted to be one of those cool pop punk kids who wore like 10 bracelets all the time but 1) money, nah, and 2) I can’t stand to wear anything nonessential, that just, dangles there. I’ll get distracted. I can’t even wear long sleeve shirts wo rolling them up, without being conscious of it, no matter how much I try.
sunshine; do you prefer for things to be practical or aesthetically pleasing?
I wouldn’t say many of my habits are either practical or aesthetically pleasing. I’m a mess and not just one to look at. I guess it depends on what you mean by “practical” because of course I want things to be not-completely-useless but I do have an appreciation of aesthetics. Not that I practice a lot in real life though that’s expensive.

WHAT'S GOING ON WITH YAMAMOTO CHIE
Hey so http://www.sakana-comic.com/ by Mad Rupert (@mynameismad) is a really fantastic comic strip and I was rereading it tonight and accidentally went temporarily insane. I came out of my bout of psychosis to find I’d written a, I shit you not, two thousand word essay about what’s going on with Chie Yamamoto. Chie is one of the main supporting characters and is interesting and mysterious and so naturally I wrote a heavily cited, vaguely academic, very dumb essay on my theory about what exactly is up with her. I sent it to a friend and they said I should post it to social media to “get the recognition [I] deserve” so, without further ado:
This is my theory about WHAT'S GOING ON WITH YAMAMOTO CHIE
_________________________________________________
PRELIMINARY EVIDENCE
First I want to show that anything at all is in fact going on with one Ms. Chie Yamamoto. I find this to be fairly self-evident upon a reread of the comic but I understand the burden of proof rests upon my shoulders.
I provide five pieces of evidence. The first: Chie's Chapter IX feature (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/chapter-9). Note the phrase "Keeps everybody guessing." The second: Chie's character bio (http://www.sakana-comic.com/cast). She not only "Keeps [people] guessing" but also "...is deeply mysterious, and is never caught off guard." The third: I talked to Mad Rupert at SPX 2017, and she said something weird was going on with Chie. She didn't say what, but she said it was something. I admit the evidence so far has been fairly Word-of-God; if you were a person who embraced Death of the Author strictly, it would not be very convincing. As such, I present the fourth and fifth pieces of evidence: in strip 139 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/139), Chie hesitates for a panel when describing her dog-training job. In the next panel she says, "Companionship, of course!" with a smile, but the sweat drops flying off her face imply she is somehow nervous--perhaps she is lying, or omitting pieces of the truth. In strip 322 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/322) Taro catches Chie at the stall and asks, suspicious, "Why were you behind the register?" to which she replies, grinning and surrounded by sparkles, her speech bubble's tail winding back and forth, "I dropped something." Upon further questioning, she calmly elaborates, "My cellphone fell out of my pocket and slid underneath [the register]." Taro remains suspicious. In the following panels she is delighted by a distracting loud noise coming from the back of the stall and rushes off to check it out. Chie's reaction and the portrayal of said reaction lead me to believe that she is lying here as well.
These pieces of evidence are small by themselves. But their synthesis indicates that something, indeed, is going on with Chie.

THESIS
Sakana, as described by the author, is a sli-li-rom-com. But it is not a slice of life of some innocent, sanitized place. There may not be supervillains or eldritch monsters in the world surrounding the Tsukiji fish market but there is violence, abuse, and organized crime. However, besides a single police officer in strip 169 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/169) and several mentions of "market security" (e.g. http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/286) there is little police presence. Yet... what if it were hiding in plain sight? What if the underground forces of crime and deviance were combated by law enforcement that was equally secretive?
I present the theory that Chie Yamamoto is not merely a dog trainer, but, in fact, an officer of the law. She trains dogs not for mere companionship but to be canine weapons--K9 units to protect and serve at her side.
_________________________________________________
CHARACTERISTICS OF YAMAMOTO CHIE
I should clarify that Japanese names put the surname before the given name. E.g. Shotaro Kaneda, Kageyama Shigeo, etc. So in Japan, Chie's full name would go Yamamoto Chie, whereas in the US you'd say Chie Yamamoto. I'm suddenly realizing that this makes me sound like a huge weeb so I'm gonna stop.
Chie has shown herself to be very resourceful, especially in regards to subterfuge and conflict. That may not by itself show that she is a trained policewoman or government agent, but it does lend support to my theory.
This characteristic does not show up much in the first volume, where she is essentially a background character. But in the second volume, when the audience and Jiro himself get to know her a little better, she shows her hand. The strips 260 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/260) and 262 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/262) serve up some good examples. She sends her friend to distract Yuudai so she can talk to Jiro without being bothered. She couches a social situation in terms of a firefight, and responds to Jiro's "Is this a date or a war??" by treating him as naive for even assuming they were two different things: "Oh, Jiro! You're so cute." Upon being told that Jiro can't talk with her because "Yuudai would kill [him]!" she takes it literally and implies she could take Yuudai in a fight: "Takana? Please, he weighs less than I do!"
If I may be allowed a digression: the first four panels of strip 261 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/261) give vitality to my crusty, seaweed-covered soul.
Anyway! In strip 330 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/330) she calmly, confidently stands up to the very intimidating Taro. When Taro objects to Mori coming along on the second date, he says, "She caused enough trouble last time!" to which she responds, smiling, "And you didn't?" Strips 287 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/287), 288 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/288), and 291 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/291), where Chie encounters Arata, also provide supporting evidence. She gives Arata an evil, evil eye when he tries to manipulate her into badmouthing the shop--clearly recognizing him for what he is and not standing for it. She's not only confident but forceful in her own manipulation, going so far as to threaten to call the manager not on Arata but on the boys in the shop. Finally, in what is possibly the most honest admission that she knows her way around a weapon or two, she responds to Jiro's thanks, "No prob! I'm VERY good at spotting trouble-makers." The capitalized word in my quotation is instead enlarged in the actual text.
I think I've presented fairly well why Chie's behavior does not contradict, and in fact supports, the idea that she is some sort of government agent or policewoman. I will now take a bit of a detour into things going on in the fish market. Be assured it will dovetail nicely with this discussion.
_________________________________________________
CRIME AT THE TSUKIJI FISH MARKET
As I've stated, the fish market where Chie and Jiro work is a hive of scum and villainy. Well, maybe that's going a little far, especially considering it’s a real place and I don’t want to give it a bad name. But, at least in the world of the comic, there's some shady stuff going on. Shigeru brings it up multiple times. In strip 99 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/099), he says to Taro, "I been seein' sum shady lookin' guys round 'ere lately [sic]." Then in strip 214 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/214), he says to Taro, "You ain't noticed all th'thugs snoopin' 'round th'market lately [sic]?" At that point, he's talking about Genji Sakana and how he thinks Genji's been caught up in something bad. And as we found out between those comics, in strip 191 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/191), Genji owes a bunch of money to a very scary man who wants his father's fish stall because "Tsukiji's one of the largest markets in the world! Merch from every corner of the globe going in and out every day... A businessman like [him] could use a hub like that." Not only is organized crime present in the fish market, it is also angling to expand its operations there.
Is this not something that would warrant attention by law enforcement? Surely they would have some awareness of the global nature of the goods flowing through the market. With that awareness comes the need for police presence to catch any illicit goods hidden between all the seafood. Of course, if you're looking to stop crime organized enough to trade illegal goods on a global scale, you can't really nip it in the bud. The bud has long since bloomed. Instead you have to eliminate the high- and mid-level members of the organization from their positions of authority. So it might make sense to install law enforcement covertly rather than overtly. Perhaps it would be best to have the installed individuals bide their time, investigate and survey and gather information so as to make the most extensive case against the criminal organization--or even to find the organization in the first place.
I hope the reader has begun to pick up on what I am suggesting.
_________________________________________________
CHIE'S ROLE
I want to go back to something I presented in preliminary evidence. In strip 322, Taro catches Chie behind the register. He is suspicious but she feigns innocence. I recognize that this could be another instance of her spying on Jiro and Yuudai's conversations, like the flashback in strip 461 (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/461). But I also think it's possible that the antics of Jiro and Yuudai are not the only thing she's keeping an eye on. I think she knows that some sketchy guys have been hanging around Ren Sakana's sushi stall. I think in her role as an agent of peace and justice she has decided to check out what's going on at the register, just ever so briefly, to make sure nothing is obviously shady.
I should elaborate more on exactly what I believe Chie does and her relationship to the other characters. I especially want to emphasize this: Chie is not a sociopath, and her job and relationships at the market are not purely utilitarian. She has worked at the market for two years (http://www.sakana-comic.com/comic/124). I'm not sure on the exact timeline of Chie's career, whether (in the world of this theory) she became involved with law enforcement before or after she started working at the market, or where she is in the organizational structure--whether she's with the police or some national investigative group like the United States's FBI. I don't think she's very senior in any organization, which would explain why she's working two jobs and spending her time investigating a fish market rather than something more interesting and/or easy. But I also think (and know, because I talked to Mad Rupert about this, too) that she genuinely likes Jiro and is invested in her relationships with Sango, Yuudai, etc. She spends her days selling seafood, working the register, talking with her friends and boyfriend, and occasionally making notes of goings-on in the market. Yes, I believe she is keeping things hidden, but only because it is required of her. She doesn't necessarily feel comfortable doing so.
I believe there is also a degree of discomfort in her mind about dating Jiro, knowing she may end up contributing to the arrest of people close to him. If anything, that angle represents the biggest flaw in my theory: Chie hasn't shown more hesitance about dating Jiro. Maybe she was behind the register merely because she was spying on Jiro and Yuudai, and she isn't aware of any criminal activity particular to the Sakanas. Maybe she likes Jiro enough to date him despite how he or someone he knows might be implicated, and she's checking the register not out of duty or suspicion, but out of desperate hope that everything is on the up-and-up and she won't have to do anything untoward to anyone in Jiro's circle. Maybe she's actually on the opposite side of the cops/robbers divide and she's either involved with the people harrassing Genji or a different group of criminals, neither of whom would be as concerned about playing favorites as law enforcement would be. I dunno! I think that given Chie's personality and genuine good intentions for the wellbeing of people around her, it's more likely that she would be on the side of law enforcement. But at this point I'm blathering.
__________________________________________________
CONCLUSION
I believe Chie Yamamoto is secretly a K9 trainer and undercover cop and that she uses her access to the Tsukiji Fish Market to gather evidence against a criminal organization attempting to use the market to trade illegal goods on a global scale. I believe the relationships she forms at the market, including her budding romance with Jiro, are real, but I believe she is keeping secrets. I believe she knows more than she lets on about deescalation, manipulation, subterfuge, and conflict of all sorts--because she was educated about those things at the academy. I believe Chie can fight and knows her way around knives, batons, guns, her own fists, etc.
And really that's why I feel this theory is important. It suggests a future moment when Chie is confronted by one of Nishimura's goons and just takes them DOWN. Like, she sweeps the leg, pulls a gun out of her jeans, flashes a badge, and tells them they have the right to remain silent.
And then, like, right after, Chie and Jiro KISS and it's amazing and then Taisei and Yuudai ALSO KISS and everyone kisses someone else and it's great.

Top 5/Bottom 5 Works
Rules: tag the person who tagged you, always post the rules, answer the questions, and add the date!
What are your five most popular works? What are your five least popular works? Are you surprised? Why? Optional: If you want to calculate this, what are your works’ average number of notes/kudos/comments? Today’s date, so you can see how your results might change if you do this again in a year.
Tag six people to do this next!
Tagged by @sineala! Tagging @amielleon, @hladgerd, @lamujerarana, @amaronith, @bipeteparker, and @brella and of course anyone else who wants to do the thing.
Sorting by kudos, and today’s date is August 3rd, 2017.
Top 5 most popular:
The Masked Man (Who Has Everything) (X-Men: First Class, Erik/Charles, background Hank/Alex): The Batman!Magneto fic, where Magneto is Batman. This has such a far lead on everything else lol but it’s the big ship for a big fandom, and it’s a fusion with another big fandom, so I’m not surprised. I like to think it’s pretty funny, too. Much like Sineala’s most popular fic, I wrote this one pretty quickly, but again given the circumstances it’s not surprising that it’s the top dog.
Keep Throwing Things and Slamming the Door (Marvel 616-based AU, Spideytorch): I am thrilled that my second most popular fic is Spideytorch, though! Last time I filtered my work through kudos I think this came out third of fourth. This is like the first “big” (not as in length, but y’know) Spideytorch fic I posted, and it’s identity porn, which always seems to do well. I have a big soft spot for this one since it was the fic that seemed to start getting the ship some attention, at least from where I was concerned.
leave the gun on the table (MCU/616 fusion, Clint/Bucky): Man, this fic. I’m happy I wrote it, because it taught me a lot about writing a longer fic, but if I was writing it now I’d do a lot different. This was for the Marvel Big Bang and the artist I landed did some stunning pieces, though.
Trials and Tribulations (Young Justice, gen): This is cute trope-y gen fic for a sizable fandom. I am a little surprised at how popular it is, but y’know, it’s Cute.
Say You Will, Say You Won't (Marvel 616, Spideytorch): Fake Married! :D Another big Spideytorch moment for me. It’s marriage of convenience that flirts with identity porn (the world does not know the Human Torch has married Spider-Man, just plain Peter Parker) with bonus Negative Zone angst, so it’s got a trope-y draw. If Keep Throwing Things was the moment I was like, huh, maybe this ship can gain some fandom traction, then Say You Will was the fic that made me sure. (Not being dramatic, but I’ve watched the ship landscape change from 2015 to 2017 and a lot has happened.) Proud of it for making the top 5.
Bottom 5 least popular:
Wherever I'm With You (FAKE, Ryo/Dee): Yuletide fic for a small manga fandom, canon-and-popular ship. I signed up to write this fandom but didn’t expect to actually land it, but rereading the canon was a lot of fun. (I still think you could make a great live action miniseries adaptation of FAKE.) Gotta say, I’m pretty pleased that my fifth least popular fic has any many kudos as it does.
a shower of autumn leaves (Tamir Trilogy, Tamir/Ki): Another Yuletide fic, and a treat for my friend Amielleon who I believe got me to read the books in the first place. It’s a canon ship, it’s for a rare book fandom, etc.
Enjoy The Trip (See You Next Fall) (Squirrel Girl/Nextwave crossover): It’s a crossover! Between Squirrel Girl and Nextwave! IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO BE AS FUNNY IN THE VOICE OF EITHER OF THOSE SERIES, LET ALONE BOTH AT THE SAME TIME but some people told me I succeeded and I choose to believe them.
In Distress (Fire Emblem 10, Pelleas/Micaiah): It’s a het rarepair AU ficlet for an older video game fandom, I’m not shocked.
And Go Seek (Kingdom Hearts, gen): I just barely remember writing this. It’s very short. They play hide and seek on the beach. That’s it. That’s the whole fic.
... Out of curiosity, I wanted to see what my Top 5 vs Bottom 5 fics looked liked filtered just down to Spideytorch, too, so here they are:
Top 5
Keep Throwing Things and Slamming the Door (616-based AU)
Say You Will, Say You Won't (616)
Kind, Sober, and Fully Dressed (616): Picks up right after the time in canon where Johnny asks Peter if he wants to come over and watch his sex tape with him, because what was I supposed to do, NOT write a fic continuing on from there? PS WHY DID MARVEL PUBLISH A COMIC WHERE AT THE END JOHNNY ASKS PETER IF HE WANTS TO COME OVER AND WATCH HIS SEX TAPE. Then they hid it on Marvel Unlimited, where it took 5 years for Spideytorch fandom to discover. Cruel, Marvel. Anyway, this one was a lot of fun to write. I’m a little surprised it’s as high up as it is, but I guess “character canonically asked best friend over to watch his sex tape, here’s what happens NEXT” is a pretty good hook, and I think I chose a good couple of lines for the summary.
Getting Better All the Time (616): Say You Will, Say You Won’t’s sequel! I had so much fun writing this fic, and on top of that it was so easy to write, too. Johnny and celebrity is always one of my favorite subjects to look at. It’s the sequel to my second most popular fic, it’s on the longer side for fics for this ship, and it’s about them being MARRIED, so I guess it makes sense that it’s up so high.
Tales From The Back Pages (616): The soulmate AU! I think this one has the trope advantage -- out of all the top 5, it’s by far the newest. I always told myself if I was ever going to write a soulmate AU for them, I’d want to play into the identity porn and have Johnny speak his first words to Spider-Man, but Peter without the mask speak his first words to Johnny. Then I looked back at their first meetings and realized that in ASM #1, Spider-Man never directly addresses Johnny, and this was, in fact, exactly how it happened, and then I had to write it. (A later Fantastic Four comic has them talk directly to each other during the first meeting, but hey, I don’t have to count retcons.) First time writing a soulmate AU and it was fun to play with.
Bottom 5
Second Chance (What If?/Marvel Adventures/Marvel Noir/616): A five times first kisses fic featuring the multiverse. This one’s fairly new, and the summary’s pretty bare bones, and I don’t know if it was as fun to read as it was fun for me to write, since I just really like playing around with different versions of canon. I almost wrote a Marvel Zombies first kiss, which I would have definitely gotten disgusting with. Romantic. But disgusting.
Echoes (616): A little Uncanny Avengers #12 tag where Johnny has complicated, guilty feelings about his hand in the death of Hank Pym, and doesn’t tell Peter about them while they cuddle on the couch. Not surprised this one is on the low side -- it’s better if you’ve read the issue, and it’s just short, plotless hurt/comfort where nothing happens but Johnny is sad. (I really like writing Johnny being sad. Sorry.)
the length and breadth of the sea (Marvel 1602): This is the prequel to my first 1602 Spideytorch and it’s another one of those fics where if I was writing it now I’d probably write it a little different. It’s a little older for Spideytorch fic (2012), and it’s for a niche version of canon, so I’m not surprised. On the other hand, it IS tagged #dinosaurs, which you think would be incentive.
Hands On (616): The six arms Spider-Man smut! This is new, only about a week old, so it explains why it’s so low. Then again it is a PWP about Peter having six arms and Johnny being turned on by that, so uh, maybe that’s why it’s low.
the lay of your lands (Marvel 1602): And my first 1602 fic! Another one I would write a little differently if I was doing it over again. For one, I didn’t pay enough attention to important 1602 details, like Namor wanting to make Sue and Johnny undersea sex slaves. The summary’s pretty bare bones, it’s a niche canon, it’s established relationship that’s only 2k, and I didn’t tag it #dinosaurs, even though I’m pretty sure there’s pterodactyls in it. That probably explains it.

All My REVIEWS REVIEW: (2016 and 2017)
Review-ception!
Tumblr media
Hello everybody, my name is JoyofCrimeArt and welcome to my first review of 2018! I guess you could call this season three? Which if we're going with that analogy that means that this and 2019 will be my best years of reviewing. And then it'll be all downhill from there, as I slowly fall into a rut of perceptual seasonal rot. So enjoy it while it last, damn it!  It's insane to think that I've been doing this for almost two years. And as this dawned on me, I started to feel a bit...introspective. We've all look back at our past, sometimes with regret, other times with nostalgia. And we've all made mistakes that we are not proud of-  EXCEPT FOR ME CAUSE I'M A FU*KING BEAST!  -And I got to thinking about my past works, my old reviews, and began to wonder if they actually still hold up. It had been forever since I had actually reread some of those older ones. And that's what we're going to be doing here today. Because what kind of critic would I be if I couldn't take criticism myself? And since they say that "you are your toughest critic" I figured it be good to see if I could take what I've spent the last two years dishing out.  Here's how this is going to work. I will be looking at all twenty two of my past reviews, and give my BRIEF thoughts on each of them, as well as possibly give some context on where my mindset was when I was writing them. Think of this like a directors commentary of sorts! However, any multi-part reviews will be counted as one for the sake of convince and time. So really it's closer to eighteen reviews. Also, obviously, this review will be sort of a companion piece to those reviews, so might wanna read those reviews first. But with that all said, let's jump right in and start at the beginning, with my first ever Deviant Art review... Powerpuff Girls 2016 REVIEW Part 1: (04-14-16) Powerpuff Girls 2016 REVIEW Part 2: (05-02-16) Powerpuff Girls 2016 REVIEW Part 3: (05-19-16)  So I wanna explain where my mindset was with this review, and what inspired me to start reviewing in the first place. If you remember back in early 2016 EVERYBODY in the cartoon reviewing community was going on and on about this show. Everybody was hating on it and bashing it, even before the show had premiered. Saying that it was going to suck. I was cautiously excited for the reboot, excited at the idea of the Powerpuff Girl's becoming a spanning franchise in the same way as Batman or Ninja Turtles where. If this show turned out well, Powerpuff could become a cartoon that's remade every decade or so, and people could watch and experience it for decades to come.  And when you're in the minority opinion, and you see everybody just bashing the thing that you are super excited about, it can be a bit discouraging. When the show actually premiered I thought it was...okay. And the problems I did have with it weren't the problems that everybody else had. But as more and more videos came out from popular cartoon reviewers, I decided that I wanted to write a review in order to release all my pent up thoughts and frustrations.  So yeah, my reviews weren't made because of a love and passion for reviewing and animation, but out of BITTERNESS AND HATE!  Re-reading the reviews, They weren't AS bad as I thought it would be, though there is very much a "pilot" type of vibe to it. There's no videos or images like my future reviews would have and it's kinda light on actual jokes.  There's a part in this review where I said that Craig McCracken gave his blessing for the show, we now know that isn't the case. But at the time that's what Tom Kenny said. And I don't want to change it because I believe that it's important not to try to undo past flaws and mistakes. I also feel like I was too nice in the review looking back on it now.  I don't know if it's just my opinion changing or just me wanting to extenuate the shows positives because oh how much everyone else was extenuating it's negatives but if I wrote this today I wouldn't be so kind. I said the show was meh but now I think it is a bad show. I just don't think it's the "end of CN" like so many people were saying at the time. But regardless I feel like I still stand by a lot of my points I made in the review. I still don't care about the memes, or the change in crew and voice cast. I'm upset by writing and lack of action and comedy that made the old show great. And I still hope that CN will give Powerpuff another try sometime down the line, and give it the reboot it deserves.  But I had a lot of fun making this review, and it would inspire me to make many more in the future. So I guess Powerpuff 2016 changed my life for the better.... Steven Universe Hit the Diamond REVIEW: (06-16-16)  Honestly...I think this one really holds up.  You can easily tell that this review set the trend for what my reviews ended up becoming overall. Images and videos where added, there's a really good balance of both comedy and analysis. My intro was introduced (yeah, I didn't realize this till now but the Powerpuff Girls reviews didn't have my typical intro.) And it started the Lapis "This plan sucks" meme.  A bit of background, originally this wasn't going to be my fourth review. I was going to review the CN short program "Mixels" because somebody had asked if I had. But after watching through it I just...had nothing to say on it. Then I saw this episode and impediment got re-inspired. I remember writing the whole review in just two or three days, it was all very impromptu. Overall I'm proud of this one, and I think it would be a good "first review to read" kind of thing to introduce someone to my reviewing style.  I'm not sorry for that RWBY Chibi joke by the way. It was my finest moment. Don't Hug Me I'm Scared REVIEW: (08-22-16) "So that's my review of Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared (Hopefully it didn't come off as too rambly and fanboy-y)" Well too bad past me, because it totally did.  Okay, to be fair, this review isn't THAT bad. Not as bad as I remembered it being, but still not one of my best in my opinion. Part of it has to do with the topic. DHMIS is a hard series to summarize and explain, and that's kinda the point of it. But I still feel like I could of done a better job describing it. The problem is a lack of structure, and the whole thing comes off as kinda rambling and confusing. Especially if you were a newcomer who had never heard of the series prior to my review.    I feel like I did a better job talking about the production side of the series than I did talking about the plot and characters. During this time I feel like I really struggled with purely positive reviews. I feel like a lot of them just came off as, like I said, rambly and fanboy-y. That's why I did so many "so bad it's good" movies and episodes in my first year of reviewing. I feel like if I had given it another draft it could of been a lot better, but what are you going to do. Camp Camp REVIEW: (09-24-16)  I remember this review being a bad one, but after rereading it, It's nowhere near as bad as I remembered. It's far from one of my best review and a lot of the problems I had in regards to doing positive reviews are still present thought. (Over-explaining things, a bit fan boyish at parts.) Overall though, it's not a BAD review, just a very "average" one.  The only noticeable things about this review in particular is that 1.) It's my first review where I had links at the bottom to other reviews and 2.) it's the only review to my knowledge that actually convinced somebody to watch the show they probably wouldn't have watched otherwise. And that really means a lot to me, cause that's a huge part of why I even do this. To introduce people to things that they will hopefully really enjoy. So in that regard I can't look upon this review THAT harshly. Scary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacular REVIEW: (10-24-16)  "Anyway, then we Jimmy appear on top on a tombstone dressed in his devil pajamas,"  Yes past me, "Then we Jimmy appear" indeed.  SERIOUSLY WHY DO ANY OF YOU WATCH ME-  When it comes to my reviews there are two main types. There's the one's that are deep analysis, often based on series that I feel very passionate about. These reviews are made with the purpose of introducing people to these underrated series with the hope the reader will check out the series, and hopefully be as impacted by ir as I was.  And then there are the reviews where it's just like "Ha! This is stupid. Let's make fun of this direct to TV movie intended for five year olds, lol." This is one of those reviews.  A problem I do have with this review other than grammar is that there are several moments where I kinda explain the jokes that are in a movie. And I don't do a very good job at explaining them because I lake the context surrounding the jokes. If I made the review today I probably would wanna cut some of those lines out. The review is also noticeably longer than the others up to this point, so that's something.  I never did end up reviewing the sequel like I said I would...at least not YE- Ouran High School Host Club REVIEW: (12-09-16)  So for some background here, I started watching the series really early in the year and decided I wanted to review it. However, the series took me a long time to finish, like almost six months from what I can recall. Which is odd because the show only has 26 episodes. But this was a very busy time for me, with me getting my first part time job, my family moving, and having to work on my comics on a weekly schedule. By the time I had finished this show, while I did enjoy the show a lot, I had kinda burned out about the idea of doing a review of it. But I didn't want all the material I had already worked on to go to waste, so I decided to just kinda muscle through it, and I think you can kinda feel that in the review.  There are still plenty of jokes in it that I'm proud of, but there are also some flaws with it. I wish I was a bit quicker in terms of summing up the cast, as that takes up almost half of the review itself. I also feel like the review doesn't have the best "flow." to it, if that makes sense. It kinda feels like I'm just jumping from point to point.  But it was my first Deviant-cember review, and my first anime review. So two big milestones there! Frosty Returns REVIEW: (12-16-16)  The most interesting thing about this review is that it's the to take a MASSIVE jump in total page view. It's weird, like why this one? I guess Frosty Returns is what my audience was secretly clamoring for? I think, this might have been when I started posting my reviews on the Mr. Enter deviant art page, so maybe that could explain it. But I'm not positive.  Anyway, as this is another "make fun of something stupid" review and not a deep passion filled analysis. There's not much to really say about it. I really need to stop mentioning the good jokes in reviews like this, they don't translate very well when transcribed from special to script. Also it spoils all the best parts. I'M SORRY FOR SPOILING FROSTY RETURNS, I HOPE YOU ALL CAN FORGIVE ME! Also I remember getting very tired half way through this. It was my first time doing reviews back to back and I was really anticipating the "2016 Year in REVIEW." But I buckled through it regardless.  I still need to review T.I and Tiny's Holiday Hustle by the way. Add it to the list! The Legend of Frosty the Snowman REVIEW: (12-23-16)  By the time I had starting writing this review I was so tired of writing and so wanting to work on the yearly retrospect that it kinda felt like a chore to write. But like a chore, I'm glad I did it because I think it turned out pretty good. It's a good bit longer than my previous reviews, which was a pain at the time, but there are some good jokes in here. Nothing else really to add, except for the fact that I wanted to use this image in the review, but forgot until after I already published it.
Tumblr media
I could give you context on what this image is...but is there any context that would justify it? 2016 Year in REVIEW: Part 1 (12-30-16) 2016 Year in REVIEW: Part 2 (12-31-16) "Getting mad at the year, an abstract concept, just feels...unproductive to me. It seem's like it's the wrong target to be directing all this anger at. Sometimes bad stuff just happens, and there's a good chance that by the end of 2017 we'll hate that year too. Because most of the bad stuff that happened in 2016...probably won't just go away come January 1st."

I got the idea to do this review probably half-way-ish through the year, and it was by far the review that I was most excited to work on. And honestly I think the yearly retrospects are, in general, the funnest reviews to work on. And good thing too because if It were any other review, I would probably be to tired and unmotivated to actually work on them.  If I have one regret it would be the final ranking of the series. In hindsight I would swap RWBY Chibi and Camp Camp's rankings. Though this may just be a "hindsight is twenty twenty" thing, as I think Camp Camp improved with it's second season, while RWBY Chibi got a bit worse.    These reviews where a lot of fun but also an exhausting experience. I had written five reviews, back to back, during the holidays, which each review becoming longer and longer. I was tired and started to feel a bit done by the time I was working on part two. (As originally it wasn't going to be a two parter. It just kinda ended up that way.)  Also this was sorta the point where my reviews started getting longer. As righting five reviews in such a short amount of time naturally made me start writing more. Like how when one is put under intense physical training over a short period of time there bodies naturally adapt, and become stronger. It's like that, but with dumb cartoon articles. Top 10 Toonami Ad's of the [adult swim] Era: (03-20-17)  As you can see, there was a bit of a gap between reviews here, for obvious reason. After Deviant-cember year one I was DONE with reviews for a long while. I needed a break.  This might be one of the funniest reviews to do the research for. I sat down and watched ALL the eligible bumpers and ads in chronological order and it was great! I didn't even care that there where hundreds of ads to look over, I just had a blast!  It was also my first top ten list! Top tens and top fives were always something I liked seeing other people do, but not something I often felt very comfortable doing. Not that I'm against them or anything, it's just that I have a hard time making them. I'm the type of guy who's exact opinions on things changes very often, and so it's hard for me to say "this thing is worse than this but better than this." I don't think that I could ever do a "Favorite Show of All Time" list or anything like that. I like so many different things for different reasons...I just don't think my brain is wired to work that way. So that's why whenever I DO make a ranking list, I try not to take the actual ranking that seriously, and just use it as an excuse to show off some stuff I like.  However, despite this, there are some things about the review that I would change looking back on it. You can still see my struggles with doing a fully positive review. Like I said earlier, It took me a long while to learn how to do positive reviews without sounding rambly and fanboy-y. Also there's almost no jokes in this one. I don't think the lack of jokes in a review is NECESSARILY a bad thing, but I feel it kinda is in this case. Since I was covering such a niche topic, some humor might have made the review better, and give people who we're uninteresting in bumpers and Toonami something to latch on to. Oh well...   Dragon Ball Super: Battle of Gods Arc REVIEW: (05-01-17)  The first part of my Dragon Ball Super retrospective series, (Which, with the recent announcement of Super ending will now have a conclusion. I sort of assumed I'd be reviewing Super until I either died or stopped doing reviews, whichever came first.) This review had a lot less recapping than I remember it having and has a good amount of both comedy and analysis. (Probably because I had the whole "compare and contrast" element to it.) Overall a fairly good start to a retrospect. Other than that not much to say though.  I'm also really proud of that "Godtube" joke. Like I know I used MS Paint, but I still think it's a really good edit. #humblebrag Samurai Jack Season Five REVIEW: (06-19-17)  "In general I tend to be more critical and nit picky about things I like than things I hate." Does anybody else feel this way, or is it just a "me" thing? I'm genuinely curious.  If there's something that this review made me realize is how quickly things come and go in the cartoon community. I was on a hiatus at the time the season ended so this review came out about a month later. And by that time it seemed like everybody had moved on from Samurai Jack for the most part. And I don't mean this as a way to complain about a lack of views or comments or anything. On the contrary the amount of views this review got seems to be on par with what they normally are and I think I actually got a bit more comments than I usually do. What I more mean is that while the season was running it was all anybody was talking about, and then once it ended nobody was discussing it. The "buzz" was gone so to speak, and it feels like that's what happens whenever a show isn't currently running or goes on break. The fandom burns bright but dies out fast, and that's kinda a shame. I feel like a lot of great shows don't get talked about as much as they should because there not quote unquote "relevant" and thus end up getting swept under the rug.  As for the review part, this is one of my personal favorites. I really wanted to make sure I did the season justice, which is part of the reason it came out almost a month after the season ended. I wanted to let my feelings settle for a bit a see how I felt after I had time to think about it, rather than just having a gut reaction. (Though I'm not saying there isn't a place for stuff like that.)  Also my first review with a title card! Title cards where something I always wanted to do but I was always afraid it would just be to time consuming, but now I think it's worth it, as I think it does add a bit of flair to the presentation. Also I've gotten a lot faster at making them. (The title card for this review was done in one evening for instance.) Watamote REVIEW: (Oh, the Cringe!) (08-14-17)  This review was easily one of the hardest to make. I started watching the series in preparation for the review in FEBRUARY, and didn't finish it until SUMMER! (I don't have time to watch cartoons! I have cartoon reviews to work on!) At the time I was watching each episode twice, once alone and once with my brother, and I think that's what made me burn out on the series. That time period was also the time where I started my new job as well, so maybe that was also a factor. I guess it makes sense, but considering the show is one of my favorite cartoons of the decade and only TWELVE episodes long, I dunno, I figured I wouldn't have that kind of reaction to it. This review was suppose to be my fourteenth review. Then it was going to be my fifteenth review, until finally it ended up becoming my sixteenth. That's how long it took for me to finish the show episodes!  So eventually I just bit the bullet and finished the dang show. Then came the problems of actually writing the show. Like I said before, I have a problem doing positive reviews without ending up ramble-y and fanboy-y, and so I REALLY wanted to make sure that it didn't happen this time. So I wrote THREE drafts of this review (prior to this I only did one draft.) I would go reread it and change things, reread it and change things...  And I'm really proud of how it turned out. The beginning part has a few awkward lines, but overall I really am proud of how it turned out. This is really my first positive review that I really loved, and it has given me the confidence to do more reviews like that in the future. You don't need to just make fun of things and review the most bottom of the barrel stuff. You can make a review where you just talk about a series or show or movie that has a special place in you're heart without it being boring. I tend to prefer reviews where their is a balance of jokes and analysis, but you don't always need that. If you're talking about something you're passionate about, that passion will seep through to the viewer. Or at least that's how I feel. Dragon Ball Super: Resurrection 'F' Arc REVIEW: (9-18-17)  I typically try to get the Dragon Ball Super reviews to come out roughly as the arcs finish on Toonami, but here I was a bit late, and by the time the review was finished the televised broadcast was already well into the Champa arc. As such, I kinda had to rush this review out in order to not fall even farther behind. And so my heart wasn't really into this review as much as it was with some of my other reviews. I still like how it turned out overall (I wouldn't publish a review if I wasn't proud of it at least a little.) but overall this feels like a review that's just kinda...there.    I feel like to much of the review was just recapping the events of the arc, and it could of used more jokes or analysis to make it feel a bit less dry. This is also my first review with a title card drawn in FireAlpaca! That's right, I moved on from MS Paint! (At least with title cards.)   Rick and Morty REVIEW: (With MiketheHuman113) (12-01-17)  My first colab review! I had wanted to do a collab for a while, and at the time Mike was the person on the site that I knew the most about, and when I saw him post a list of all time favorite characters, and saw Rick as number two, I thought that he would be a good pic.  Actually doing the review however was a bit of a challenge. I had to write my segments, send it to him via note, and then get his segments back and paste them into my journal in a way so that it sounded natural. Then I had to rewrite some of the transitions to make it all flow together.  Why didn't you just use Google Docs?
 ...
Tumblr media
NNNHHHHGGGGUUUUUU!!!!!  Anyway, this was a topic that I wanted to get off my chest for the longest time, so I was very happy to finally do so. I do have some problems with the review though (None of which where on Mike's end BTW, just to be clear he was awesome.) I feel like there's a lot of jumping around with the points, and the review's overall flow suffers as a result. I also wished I hadn't jumped around so much from spoiler to non spoilers as much as I did, and if I were to redo the review now I think I would want to make them review more general and less focused on specific moments and episodes. That way it be easier to follow if you hadn't seen the show.  I also wish that maybe it was a little shorter. It was my first time doing a collab, and I figured it be easier because I would only have to do half the work. But what ended up happening (and I blame my own workaholic-ness for this.) Is that I made a full length review, and then stuck Mike's contributions on top of it. So not only was the review long, but it wasn't any easier than a normal review. in fact it was probably harder.  But I'm glad I did it. I was fun and I'd love to do more collabs in the future. However given the previously mentioned difficulty it'll probably only be a "once a year-ish" thing. But y'never know. Who do you think I should collab with?  This was also the first time I made art for a review outside of the title card. In this case the Super Smash Bros style intro I did for Mike. I want to make those for everybody I do a collab with. Also I noticed that after this review, I began to be more noticed in the DA review community. Probably because Mike's in it, so I could leach off his audience. However, oddly enough, the views for this review are bellow average, so who knows. Dragon Ball Super: Champa Arc REVIEW: (12-08-17)  HEY KIDS AT HOME, COUNT THE AMOUNT OF TIME I SAY THE WORD "MISSTEP" "OPPORTUNITY" AND OR "WASTE." I'LL GIVE YOU A HINT, IT'S WAY TO FRICKIN' MUCH!-  There's also more spelling errors than normal. Overall I just blame the rush of Deviant-cember, and the fact that like in 2016, my heart was really set on the yearly recap instead of this.  The review as a whole however, ironically, is kinda like the arc itself. It starts out kinda slow, with mostly recapping events. But as the review goes on it's get's a lot better, with more jokes and insightful analysis. Not much else to say about this one. Top 5 Obscure Christmas Specials You Should Watch: (12-15-17)  I feel like there were some unprofessional moments in this review, mostly as a result o a time crunch to finish the review before the deadline. From not rewatching Nestor to tracing the Hawkmoth logo it feels a bit sloppy to me. (Even though I'm sure these are things that won't bother most other people.) I was in a bit of a rush for this part of deviant-cember as work and the holidays in general gave me less time to work on the reviews, in addition to the stuff that I was posting on Mondays. I wanted to succeed in my goal of doing two uploads a week during Deviant-cember since I failed to do so in 2016. However, I am glad that I was able to talk about so many weird specials, and I don't think that review suffers to much from the rush. When I was writing the review, I felt burnt out from reviews and just wanted to move on to the yearly recap, but looking back on it now, the review isn't really that bad. There are some good jokes in it and I love recommending obscure stuff to people. Maybe one day I'll do a part two.  OH! And it turns out that "A Cranberry Christmas" IS lost media! It's the first piece of lost media that I watched before it got lost! WE NEED TO FIND THIS, GUYS! 2017 Year in REVIEW: Part 1 (12-22-17) 2017 Year in REVIEW: Part 2 (12-29-17)  Most of the things that I said about my 2016 year in review could be said about these reviews, so I don't have much to add. Have I mentioned that I hate the "This year sucks" meme yet? It such a stupid thing, to hate on a year. And I worry that with our cynical society we live in that the "This year is awful" thing will go on until the end of time itself. 2017 was fine. 2016 was fine. Y'wanna know what year was really a dumpster fire. 1942. That's the year we entered the second World War, segregation was still a thing, and all the meme's sucked that year! It was awful!  My only real regret about this review was using the word "hate boner" when talking about Castlevania's views on religion. I think the term "hate boner" is really dumb sounding and at the time of writing the review I didn't realize that people used the term so unironically. (No offense to people who do use the term. It' just a term I really don't like, personally. Just use the term "bias.")  And that's it. ALL 22 of my reviews reviewed! Do I recommend...me?  Well personally this JoyofCrimeArt guy does have his fair share of problems. He can come off as a bit fanboy-y and ramble-y at times. His reviews sometimes have weird pacing issues, jumping from point to point. While I enjoy how in-depth he can SOMETIMES be, they can be a bit long at points. Also he has a lot of unpopular opinions, and sometimes I wonder if he's just being contrarian. Not the mention the fact that, since the idiot thought that having THREE web comics running simultaneity at the same time was a good idea, he doesn't actually post reviews very often when compared to some of his reviewing counterparts.  On the other hand though...there are some positives to the guy. He seems very passionate about the topics he talks about. He has an okay balance of analysis and comedy. And I also like how he talks about a variety of different stuff. From popular series, obscure series, anime, web series, direct to DVD movies, bumpers, HIS OWN REVIEWS. You never know what you're going to get.  Is he the best reviewer on DA. Probably not. Heck, he's probably not even in the top fifteenth. But if you're willing to devote a half hour of you're time to reading one of his overly long reviews, who knows, you might just enjoy yourself. Or not. I dunno.  So that was my review of my reviews. What are your thoughts about my thoughts about my thoughts. Leave those thoughts in the comments down below. I would love to exchange thoughts even if we don't have the same thoughts. Do you have a favorite or least favorite review of mine? I'd be genuinely curious to know. Please fav, follow, and comment if you like the review and have a great day. (I do not own any of the images or videos in this review all credit goes to there original owners.)

I finished uploading Rebel Forces yesterday, so I thought I’d take today to just... talk about not just Rebel Forces, but the AU in general.
I started with A Meeting of Forces. I originally wasn’t sure where I’d fully go, how much this would be written, if it’d be a series, how long that would go, it was a lot of thinking. And now I’m here, working on an entire series.  Forces Assemble, which is placed as part one, wasn’t actually started until, if I recall correctly, wasn’t started in writing until I was working on Rebel Forces. It wasn’t planned and just... came to be. I honestly had considerations of it going until The Fall of the Castle of Lions, but I decided otherwise.
Before I started this series, I was going over ideas, checking out comics, even watching part of DaiRugger, Vehicle Voltron’s original source material. I also spent countless hours researching, hoping to find out what I could to make such an AU. I had shown such an interest in Chip and him and Pidge being twins, I wanted to involved in a VLD setting.  An original idea was actually an unpublished, unfinished fic called A Century in the Making, where the twins are actually living in 1999 and Earth is in World War III. There’s an attack by a Galran looking for the lions and the Green and Blue lions are on Earth. Pidge pilots Green, protects Earth, but things go wrong and the two go in stasis, asleep in the Green lion’s hold, for a century until they wake up again.  But I haven’t continued that and ended up thinking of AMoF (A Meeting of Forces).
I liked the idea of the twins being separated at young ages, birth even. So that was my initial thought when I moved onto AMoF. Of course, I had the thought that they weren’t the only siblings; they have their older brother, Matt. Who neither of them actually know. Ah joys. And of course being adopted. The idea of them all adopted by someone different was nice. Sure, with how things are that means Sam and Colleen aren’t married, but it’ll all work out in the end. Don’t worry. As I went into thinking for the AU, I had actually considered them not getting along at first. At the time of planning, I had thought “what if Pidge has Rover still and the others recognize him as a Galra drone and think Pidge is an enemy?” It seemed good. I had considered that Pidge and Chip would meet on bad terms and get into a fight until someone intervened, splitting them up and recognizing that Pidge was a paladin of Voltron. From there, they would have continued fighting and bickering, the others pointing out how much alike they were, to which they would deny. This would continue until they finally warmed up to each other, realizing they were similar.  But that idea was scrapped. I was struggling to work with it and ended up with what I have now, which is nice. The idea of them clicking so easily was nice and happy, which is needed considering how often Pidge gets hurt.
Another idea I had considered with AMoF actually came from DDP’s Voltron comic, with the Garrison taking the lions and studying them to create their own Voltron. Though less stealing was what I considered, and more so studying while the others were on Earth, I had considered that in the end. And yes, I considered DaiRugger’s appearance by the end of AMoF.  Again, that idea ended up being scrapped. I wasn’t sure how to fully work with it, so I chose a different path and DaiRugger and coming together being a thing the Olkari would help with. This would was definitely good for the others to be surprised by DaiRugger and in a good way.
I think the thing that stuck no matter my ideas and thinking, ending AMoF on Olkarion was something that didn’t change. I liked the idea of them ending off with Greening the Cube. However, I had considered the others meeting Ulaz before they found Pidge, so he’d be at the castle by the time she reunited with the others. But that was changed and I had it implied/mentioned in Rebel Forces that he’d be met after Greening the Cube instead of before.
And Rebel Forces. I’m going to be honest, I wasn’t sure if I was going to bring Rover back or not. But in the end, it was decided that was best for Pidge, let her have her robotic buddy back. Though she has sad memories of the day she lost him, traumatized and haunted by her fight with Haxus, which isn’t written but definitely hinted and mentioned, it is nice that she has her friend back.  Also, with Rebel Forces, after finishing AMoF, I knew instantly I would want them to meet Matt sooner than canon’s season four. It was nice. And the fact that he’s been wanting to meet his siblings all that time, perfection.
I guess that’s it for now. If y’all have questions about this AU, or even others, feel free to ask; I’ll do my best to answer.  Next week we’ll continue this adventure with Fourth Force, horribly named for the fourth installment. We’ll get the others on more adventured, including Pidge constantly getting hurt and the others being right about worrying over her.  In fact, Fourth Force is fully written now. And I’m currently trying to write the fifth installment, title pending, A Change in the Forces. I’ve got a lot of planning to do with that one. I’ll be resuming watching DotU, which means also the Vehicle Voltron segment and the third season with Merla, so hopefully those can help me get more thought process going and working with characters and involving more.
Wanna catch up, check out, or reread these fics? Here are the links to their first chapters.
Forces Assemble A Meeting of Forces Rebel Forces
Anyway! I hope you all enjoyed this little bit of insight and that it made sense. Sometimes I accidentally ramble and then worry it doesn’t make sense.  Well, until next time.
