Squidgame and Motherhood
Usually (at least in western media) adult men who still live with their mothers or even interact with their mothers more than "normal" are seen as 'mama's boys" these men are usually portrayed as overly dependent on their mothers , weak, spineless, and in some cases, romantically involved with their own parents. (EWWWWWWW)
Moms are also seen as nagging, controlling, demanding, or even a downright annoyance, something to be "put up with". Think of the classic nagging phone call, or visit from the in laws, or rivalries between spouse and mother that are prevalent in comedies. Very rarely do we actually see healthy functioning relationships between mother and son.
And in the beginning of the games, It seems like we're getting more of the same thing.
Our first introduction to the pair are when Guem-ja tells off Yong-sik, hitting him and calling him a fool for joining the games. She embarrasses Yong-sik in spite of his weak protests, playing into the overbearing mother and meek, subservient son.
But, as soon as the first round of eliminations are over, Yong-sik tells his MOTHER to get behind him, he tries his best to protect her throughout the games, as Guem-ja tries to protect him.
During the second game Guem-ja tries to leave Yong-sik, knowing he has a better chance without an old lady slowing him down. Yong-sik refuses, Instead he tells her to keep her head up and not despair. he does the same thing later in the episode. This shows another aspect of a healthy parent-adult relationship, they support each other and draw strength from that support.
In Episode, 5 when Yong-sik votes to continue the games Guem-ja tells Yong-sik how she can't lose him. Because when you become a parent, your life is no longer your own, at least not fully. You live for your child, you devote yourself to your child because that's your job.
My final thoughts are this: Yong-sik and Guem-ja care about each other because that's what a mother and son are supposed to do. and that's refreshing to see in a time where it feels like everyone is too eager to "escape" their family. (at least in media)
I'm just so happy to see a healthy relationship between the mother and adult son you guys!!!
TLDR: CALL YOUR MOM RN!!!!
#squid game#squid game s2#Guem-ja#Yong-sik#HEALTHY FAMILIAL RELATIONSHIPS!?!?!?#IN 2024!!?!?!?#thank you for coming to my ted talk#call your mom#im serious#call her

My favorite part about S2 of Squid Game is that we were given a BAD ASS trans female character. And she didn’t get killed off!! That’s so huge!! Especially since Squid Game is super duper popular and also comes from Korea where being trans and queer is still highly frowned upon; I so so so so hope this is as revolutionary as I think it is.
I also love how Guem-Ja waned from her prejudice once she got to know Hyun-Ju. Like, idk how to explain it but I hope transphobic people see her changing her views and can find it in themselves to do the same thing.
#squid game#hyun ju#idk maybe it’s just me but I was so excited when I saw her!!! Seeing LGBTQ rep that’s undeniable is so exciting#ahhh I hope other people were as excited as I was when she was introduced#I was highkey scared they were going to do her dirty and kill her off but they made her so cool AHHHH

The Aftermath (Gi-hun x reader)
Summary: after the events of episode 7, Gi-hun goes back to the dorm...but what awaits him there? Warnings: season 2 spoilers, angst, unspoken feelings, guilt ridden Gi-hun.
Gi-hun’s POV
He’s dead….he’s actually dead….Jung-bae…Young-il…all those men died and for what…for us to continue the games? We were so close and yet….we still lost. Is anyone even alive? Dae-ho? Hyun-ju? Y/N? So many thoughts in my head, where do I even start?
“G-g-g-Gi-hun?” I hear someone ask. I look up, not realizing I’m back at the dorm already. I see Y/N looking at me with a worried expression.
“He’s dead….Jung-bae…Young-il…they’re all…” I say, muttering softly. I see Y/N making their way over to me. The look on Jung-bae’s face is still fresh in my head. I feel arms wrap around me and I bury my face in their hair. Silent sobs wrack my body again, just wanting this all to be a bad dream.
“Gi-hun…you did all you could,” Y/N says. So they're the one holding me.
“I could’ve protected him better….I shouldn’t have done it!” I yell, the guilt consuming me already. If we won, they would all be alive...I could take Y/N with me and we can start over together. They joined the number of reasons why I wanted to end the games in these short few days. The guilt will consume me if I don't do something...
“Gi-hun! Blaming yourself wont bring them back from the dead!” They yell back.
“They’re right….blaming yourself won’t bring them back…we must fight on and bring him down still,” Jun-hee says, putting her hand over her bump. Maybe they're both right....
“He already won…” I say, feeling lost.
“We will figure it out,” Y/N says
“Doubt they will let us vote now,” Player 333 says
“Yeah doubt it too, guess we shall find out soon enough,” Player 125 says, giggling like a school girl. I look at him like he’s insane.
“Ignore him, he’s high,” Player 333 says, earning a scowl from 125.
“Mr., 456 sir,” Player 149 says and I look at her.
“I’m Guem-ja and this is my son Yong-sik,” She says, motioning to player 007.
“We might as well get to know each other's names, yeah?” Y/N suggests and I nod.
“I’m Namg-yu,” “Myung-gi,” “Y/N,” “Gi-hun,”
“Dae-ho,”
Y/N’s POV
After finding out from Gi-hun what had happened, I was pissed beyond belief. You mean to tell me that the Captain shot Jung-bae short range in the chest? “This is bullshit,” I say
“It is but here we are…” Gi-hun says and I look at him.
“Screw this place,” I say, getting up from my bunk.
“Y/N…” Gi-hun warns
“Screw this place….and screw the captain for killing Jung-bae!” I yell
“Y/N don’t,” Dae-ho warns again
“You gonna kill the rest of us?! Huh?!” I yell louder, in the direction of the camera that I know they’re watching from.
“You already killed Jung-bae, Young-il, Gyeong-seok…you killed everyone!” I yell, feeling tears stream down my face. Sobs wrack my body as I feel strong arms wrap themselves around me. I turn to see Gi-hun with tears in his eyes.
“I want this to be over…” I say, my voice trembling as I talk.
“We will…we will get this to be over and we’ll go home…yeah?” Gi-hun asks and I nod, clinging onto him. We hold onto each other for the rest of the night…waiting for what tomorrow brings us…and our friends who are alive.

Yep to most of this. Except Hyena is made for a global viewership and cannot go into everything you've pointed out without alienating the non- Korean audiences.
Plus, the age difference falls by the way side because the story emphasizes quite a bit on class divides, social hierarchies, and "the elites". The noona romance of age difference would have dragged the story down from the fast pacing.
While I love that Kim Hye Soo got such a bold role, Jung Geum Ja's character comes of as 2 dimensional once you take a second look. She's absolutely right to be aggressive and do everything that she does. But the fast pace doesn't allow for the drama to show Jung Guem Ja's other characteristics. Who is she when she's alone or not being hyper alert?
Also, the show or anyone in the show isn't guilting her for fooling Baby Yoon. I mean, once you think about it, she's been to his apartment but he doesn't seem to know anything about her? And her courtship is thorough, he did not have a chance. Yet no one is pointing out her shitty behaviour in-show possibly because they're all worse.
Older woman-younger man pairings, social hierarchy, and Hyena:
One of the things that immediately stands out about Hyena is the age difference of the main leads. In-drama, the age gap is lowered to about 4-5 years (I think), but in reality Kim Hyesoo is 12 years older than Ju Jihoon.
It’s a type of pairing seen rarely in media, especially where the actress in question is 49. A lot of people were apprehensive about this casting too, with some being downright awful to Kim Hyesoo. (It’s sad, considering how naturally society accepts the image of much older men paired with younger women.) But it turned out KHS and JJH were so electric on screen together that, for many, this drama was something of a revelation, broadening their horizons of what is possible.
Personally, I was already a fan of noona romances to begin with, but Hyena has definitely left me wanting more middle-aged actresses being paired with actors 10-ish years younger.
As for why…there’s the draw of addressing double standards and society’s discomfort with older women to be sure, but honestly? I just find confident women and cute men appealing, and older woman-younger man couples tend to bring that dynamic out the most out of hetero relationships.
This is especially true for Korea, where age plays a big role in social hierarchy. Normally, women would be expected to abide by stronger social rules than men and overall act more politely. But age is a counter-force, and younger men have to act and speak more politely to older women. Age grants women confidence and a sense of authority in the relationship, and gives men the societal allowance to be a little more vulnerable and cute. That’s why “regular” romances often have shy, innocent young women as the main character but noona romances allow women to be more forward and worldly, and even take the lead. (It’s especially pronounced once the age gap gets bigger, and if the woman is on the older side.)
In this context, I find Hyena interesting because it fully utilizes, but also kind of ignores, the age dynamic.
On one hand: The drama fully uses Kim Hyesoo’s older age and seniority in the industry to go bold as hell with Geumja’s character - and let her be as charismatic, shameless, and forward as Geumja deserves to be. I love that Geumja takes on a lot of aspects of the typical male lead in a Kdrama, and this wouldn’t work if she was younger.
And Heejae’s younger-man status gives Ju Jihoon and the writer more leeway for his character be childish and cute in an appealing way, while also helping to cover for his flaws. For example: I would feel differently about his jealousy if a younger, softer woman was his romantic partner. But with Geumja, I just found him cute. (Baby duck Heejae!)
But on the other hand, the drama de-emphasizes the significance of age. It’s not just about the drama being casual about Geumja and Heejae’s age difference, but the characters in general tend to show less regard for seniority than real life working members of Korean society. And significantly, Heejae talks to Geumja like they’re the same age. Heejae’s honestly being extremely rude to her - enough that Ju Jihoon said he was freaking out about saying some of his lines to Kim Hyesoo - but it comes off as appealing to Koreans rather than rude because:
Heejae does have a line he won’t cross - e.g. he calls her Jung Geumja, but never just Geumja. (Uhhh I don’t really know how to explain why one is okay but other isn’t, but it just doesn’t sound as rude?)
Geumja already has so much power over Heejae that it evens the playing field - It’s his way of protecting his pride and making her take him seriously.
Tbh Heejae has the right to call her worse things.
Actually, taking this line of thought further - I find Hyena’s vision of Korea interesting. In Hyena, while Korean cultural rules still exist, they hold less power. Social hierarchies like age, gender, and class are less enforced, or sometimes ignored all together, and characters behave in ways that are not yet possible without huge backlash in real life. It’s a version of our world where women and younger, poorer people can actually climb up and play on the same field as powerful older men, without having to play civil. It’s not a revolutionary message - I’d rather see the established power systems dismantled instead - but it’s cathartic to see the characters say shocking, rude lines that other dramas would not have given them. (And admittedly a lot of fun to see the types of characters that were reserved for men be played by women.)
So Hyena ends up being a work that brings out a duality in me: I love the relative freedom from cultural bindings that the drama grants its characters but I also love that it really leans into the appeal of noona romances that comes from Korea’s age hierarchy. They seem rather contradictory, but somehow they coexist in this drama. And that is Hyena’s unique appeal for me.
#Hyena#sbs hyena#Hyena Netflix#kdrama#kim hyesoo#ju jihoon#jung geumja#yoon heejae#not my tags#just struck me that no one who finds out that Jung Guem Ja's fooled our boy tells her off#they're more bothered that she's lower class

The biggest respect to Boo Hyeon A. I really felt as though she wanted to admit her feelings to Hee Jae, but didn’t go on anyway because she respected whatever he has with Guem Ja. Truly a classy woman from start to end, hands down.
Do you know how it feels when you want to help someone out in any kind of way possible but you can’t?

Wednesday, 9th of november 2005
I headed toward Haneda Airport by taxicab early in the morning. I fought against the temptation to drowse.
We crossed Tenkuu Bridge and my eyes exploded with light.
I looked through the window and saw the horizon full of fire colors. I haven't seen dawnlight with my own eyes for quite some time. I always get up early, yet I rarely see the new sun.
Tokyo has a horizon drawn by skyscrapers, electric poles and wires, elevated railroad tracks, highways, signs and advertisements. All these city things trap only a small piece of sky for Tokyo's residents to behold. We can't even see the sunset clearly. We only know the daytime sun.
I lived alone in Tokyo's Ikejiri district when I first came here ten years ago. I could only see the highway when I opened my window. Every morning suffocated me back then. The city disciplines us, it eases us into a well-planned routine, formidable patience, and a bit of luck if we want to enjoy sunrise and sunset. I could relish sunrise every day back in Kobe.
Today I appreciated a new facet of the airport. As the name implies, Tokyo's airport really brings us into the skies.
"Even in Tokyo, we have a place where we can find a tremendous sky."
The morning sun shattered my drowsiness. I felt exquisite this morning.
I boarded flight JL8831 and departed from Haneda Airport to Kimpo Airport. I noticed a movie that Shin-chan had recommended listed on the flight's program (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), but I wasn't able to watch it. Korea isn't far from Japan, so they didn't show an in-flight movie.
From the plane I could see Mount Fuji draped in snow. The mountain has begun its own winter preparations.
I was surprised by more than ten fans waiting in Kimpo Airport's lobby. They greeted my arrival with placards that read, "I love MGS!" and "Hideo Kojima!"
The display really moved me. I gave some of them my autograph.
I saw a few middle-age people standing among them. I'm sure that the older folks were simply confused. They must have thought that I was someone else. They didn't appear to connect at all with video games or MGS.
I met Mr. Youn and his subordinates in the lobby. Mr. Youn is the CEO of UNIANA, an Asian branch of Konami. We exchanged a warm, firm handshake.
Kimpo Airport was blistering cold the last time I was here in February. When my flight landed today I heard an announcement that the temperature was 4 Celsius. I worried a little. I'm relieved to find the weather not too cold... it's even warm.
We drove to meet Director Park Chan-Wook at Haeng-Ju Bridge. We arrived early, so I checked out the mountain fortress Haeng-Ju Sa Seog. I didn't have enough time to move up the mountain, so I walked around the base instead. Ginko trees had shed their leaves and covered the street with a canary-colored carpet.
I had a completely different impression of this place when I visited in mid-winter. I now see that Korea and Japan are similar. Both have beautiful autumn leaves as well as clearly distinct seasons.
We went to the restaurant Naruto where they serve homecooked Korean cuisine.
Director Park's group decided to go ahead and film my interview. They'll include the footage as extra material on the DVD release of Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. I was caught off-guard, and I greeted the camera in Japanese.
The staff taught me a Korean line from Sympathy for Lady Vengeance: "Neo na jal haseyo." It's become the movie's catch-phrase. The film's main character (Guem-Ja) speaks the line to a preacher who finds her after her release from prison. It translates into something like, "Excuse me, but who the hell do you think you are?" It's similar to Jimmy Oshini's one-liner from his comedian days.
You shouldn't say it around people who haven't seen the movie though. It's a pretty rude expression, and they won't know that it's just a film reference.
We gave Director Park a gift: Shin-chan's rendition of Guem-Ja drawn on high quality paper.
We enjoyed lunch for two and a half hours. Our conversation covered a breadth of topics... our current activities, prospective projects, movies, manga, anime, and so on.
I last saw Director Park nine months ago. He was pretty tense then because he was shooting his film. He seemed pretty relaxed today though.
I really enjoyed it.
Director Park gave me the Oldboy Ultimate Box Set, sold only in Korea. They really made this fancy. The package design resembles the mysterious box from the movie. And talk about "ultimate"... it holds the soundtrack, a photo collection, a storyboard, a senitype, and four discs with extra footage. I hope they release it in Japan too.
What?! He told me that Starsailor used Oldboy footage in the music video for Bring My Love, and the Box Set contains the footage. Starsailor is my favorite UK band. I used their song Way to Fall as the MGS3 credits theme.
The coincidence surprised both of us. Japan, Korea, and the UK all connected for a moment, and I felt a strong sense of connectivity.
Director Park and I went our separate ways, and my group headed toward UNIANA.
They updated us on G-STAR's situation. The game expo starts tomorrow.
I spoke with Mr. Senju, Matsuhanan, and Tojin over the telephone. They had been preparing our booth at the expo site even before I arrived. They briefed me on the construction progress. Nothing serious has come up, but we're still behind schedule. We'll probably need to delay our stage rehearsal.
All three of them spoke excitedly. They're really into this.
Even Korea loves the anime series Crayon Shin-Chan. UNIANA's conference room has a Shin-Chan clock.
We briefly stopped by the computer room in the evening before heading toward the G-STAR site.
We arrived at the Korean International Exhibition Hall (KINTEX). It's located just slightly off the city's center. KINTEX compares with Germany's magnificent Leipzig Messe, which hosts the GC Expo.
KINTEX first surprised me with its size. It has a modern design, too. I heard that they just recently finished its construction. G-STAR plans to gather a total audience of 100,000 people, and I think that KINTEX can handle that amount of people easily.
I went inside. G-STAR starts tomorrow, and most booths were still incomplete. I was surprised… and a little worried.
I asked locals about the situation. They explained: "The Korean people never settle for second best. Once they saw each other's booths, they commenced rebuilding their own to make them even better."
I was startled somewhat to see booths that lacked any structure whatsoever. Everything looks like Japan's TGS two days before opening.
I had to walk through all the construction to get to UNIANA's and Konami's collaborative booth. I could hardly move without stepping on something. I walked carefully through the cranes, cars, wet glue, and paint.
I took a right inside the entrance, walked straight forward, and UNIANA's and Konami's booth appeared at the end of the aisle. They're putting the final touches on the exterior. Our booth is done. Nice!
I heard that we've built G-STAR's MGS booth in the image of the TGS MGS booth. They share the same stage structure, layout, color schemes, and textures. I was reminded of our booth two months before... it's like the same game expo in a different country.
I'm excited. I can feel adrenaline slipping into my system.
"I see... I think I understand now why Mr. Senju, Matsuhanan, and Tojin sounded so alive."
I feel energy tensing inside me. I'm really looking forward to the show.
I checked the booth and the stage, along with the next-generation theater's visual setup and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound.
We hadn't prepared backstage for the live show, so I needed to catch up on the plans. Mr. Senju and I went over the latest rehearsal notes, the Powerpoint presentation, and the whole program from start to finish. It looks like we'll forego rehearsal today. We'll handle it tomorrow.
I had some of the unusual candies that Mr. Senju found in Korea. We're supposed to hold them in our mouths and suck.
I hadn't seen them before in Japan, so I took one. These are fun!
I ate dinner with everyone at the Italian restaurant inside KINTEX.
Kenpai! Three cheers for Konami, UNIANA, G-STAR, and the Korean gamers! Let's give tomorrow everything we've got.
I finally checked into my hotel just before midnight. I had a couple drinks at the bar while I admired Korea's night view.
