Welp, the biopsy results are back and the vet's suspicion confirmed. It's cancer and an aggressive one. Soo, for Guss' sake, we will be saying goodbye on Wednesday. It makes me so very sad. But, it is the right thing to do in his case. Guss will never be replaced - just succeeded. And the llama who ends up joining the animal fam' will have some big shoes to fill. Waiting for Guss to wake up from his sedative (his biopsy was today).... I need to keep watch to make sure he keeps cushing and doesn't roll on his side as being on his side for an extended period of time can prevent burps from coming out and kill him. We will know the results of the test on Monday or Tuesday. If it is positive, we will have to say goodbye to Guss earlier than we had imagined to give him the best quality of life and the most humane end. It's been eventful since returning home from AZ - and not due to lambs dropping which is what I had expected! Instead, i uncovered a very large, deep open wound under Uncle Guss' fiber filled with maggots. Been a long few days cleaning and flushing but thankfully it's looking better, especially after a visit by our wonderful vet yesterday. Unfortunately the location of and nature of the wound doesn't lend itself to injury from a fence or a predator and has more of an appearance like cancer. We have to wait for the wound to heal a bit more to biopsy so I'll keep up the cleanings and we'll go from there. Send good vibes please! How do I clean his wound you might wonder given Uncle Guss doesn't necessarily enjoy close contact with the human kind? Well, that there is a silver lining to all this! While I know he's weak (he hasn't eaten for days) I do know he has enough energy to resist as he did so when the vet was treating him. So as he let's me sit next to him, slowly trim his fiber away from the wound and clean it out I know he knows I'm trying to help him and he trusts me - something I've never felt he's truly done before.
