Good News - June 8-14
Like these weekly compilations? Tip me at $Kaybarr1735! And if you tip me and give me a way to contact you, at the end of the month I'll send you a link to all of the articles I found but didn't use each week!
1. Rare foal born on estate for first time in 100 years
“The Food Museum at Abbot's Hall in Stowmarket, Suffolk, is home to a small number of Suffolk Punch horses - a breed considered critically endangered by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust. A female foal was born on Saturday and has been named Abbots Juno to honour the last horse born at the museum in 1924. [...] Juno is just one of 12 fillies born so far this year in the country and she could potentially help produce more of the breed in the future.”
2. The cement that could turn your house into a giant battery
“[Scientists] at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have found a way of creating an energy storage device known as a supercapacitor from three basic, cheap materials – water, cement and a soot-like substance called carbon black. [... Supercapacitators] can charge much more quickly than a lithium ion battery and don't suffer from the same levels of degradation in performance. [... Future applications of this concrete might include] roads that store solar energy and then release it to recharge electric cars wirelessly as they drive along a road [... and] energy-storing foundations of houses.”
3. New road lights, fewer dead insects—insect-friendly lighting successfully tested
“Tailored and shielded road lights make the light source almost invisible outside the illuminated area and significantly reduces the lethal attraction for flying insects in different environments. [...] The new LED luminaires deliver more focused light, reduce spill light, and are shielded above and to the side to minimize light pollution. [... In contrast,] dimming the conventional lights by a factor of 5 had no significant effect on insect attraction.”
4. When LGBTQ health is at stake, patient navigators are ready to help
“[S]ome health care systems have begun to offer guides, or navigators, to get people the help they need. [... W]hether they're just looking for a new doctor or taking the first step toward getting gender-affirming care, "a lot of our patients really benefit from having someone like me who is there to make sure that they are getting connected with a person who is immediately going to provide a safe environment for them." [... A navigator] also connects people with LGBTQ community organizations, social groups and peer support groups.”
5. Tech company to help tackle invasive plant species
“Himalayan balsam has very sugary nectar which tempts bees and other pollinators away from native plants, thereby preventing them from producing seed. It outcompetes native plant species for resources such as sunlight, space and nutrients. [...] The volunteer scheme is open to all GWT WilderGlos users who have a smartphone and can download the Crowdorsa app, where they can then earn up to 25p per square meter of Balsam removed.”
6. [Fish & Wildlife] Service Provides Over $14 Million to Benefit Local Communities, Clean Waterways and Recreational Boaters
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is distributing more than $14 million in Clean Vessel Act grants to improve water quality and increase opportunities for fishing, shellfish harvests and safe swimming in the nation’s waterways. By helping recreational boaters properly dispose of sewage, this year’s grants will improve conditions for local communities, wildlife and recreational boaters in 18 states and Guam.”
7. Bornean clouded leopard family filmed in wild for first time ever
“Camera traps in Tanjung Puting National Park in Indonesian Borneo have captured a Bornean clouded leopard mother and her two cubs wandering through a forest. It's the first time a family of these endangered leopards has been caught on camera in the wild, according [to] staff from the Orangutan Foundation who placed camera traps throughout the forest to learn more about the elusive species.”
8. Toy library helps parents save money 'and the planet'
“Started in 2015 by Annie Berry, South Bristol's toy library aims to reduce waste and allow more children access to more - and sometimes expensive - toys. [...] Ms Berry partnered with the St Philips recycling centre on a pilot project to rescue items back from landfill, bringing more toys into the library. [...] [P]eople use it to support the environment, take out toys that they might not have the space for at home or be able to afford, and allow children to pick non-gender specific toys.”
9. Chicago Receives $3M Grant to Inventory Its Trees and Create Plan to Manage City’s Urban Forest
“The Chicago Park District received a $1.48 million grant [“made available through the federal Inflation Reduction Act”] to complete a 100% inventory of its estimated 250,000 trees, develop an urban forestry management plan and plant 200 trees in disadvantaged areas with the highest need. As with the city, development of the management plan is expected to involve significant community input.”
10. Strong Public Support for Indigenous Co-Stewardship Plan for Bears Ears National Monument
“[The NFW has a] plan to collaboratively steward Bears Ears National Monument to safeguard wildlife, protect cultural resources, and better manage outdoor recreation. The plan was the result of a two-year collaboration among the five Tribes of the Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition and upholds Tribal sovereignty, incorporates Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and responsibly manages the monument for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation while ensuring the continued health of the ecosystem.”

Congrates in the 'no more babies!'
I also have that fear... I do not have a man in my life.. but I am afraid I might be... forced by some stranger..
I would also love to never suffer periods again. (I don’t get pain. But I hate ruining undies)
I would love to get the surgery also but like.. I'm afraid of cost...and... stuff... OTL
Anyway
Congrats~
Thank you!
And yes that is a very valid fear to have, so I feel you. Especially with reproductive rights being attacked ever since the overturning of Roe vs Wade.
I'm fortunate enough to have health insurance through my job that will pay for most of the cost, so I've only had to pay a couple hundred so far. I'm fine with it since it means I'll never have to worry about pregnancy for the rest of my life, but I know that money is really tight for a lot of people, so I understand the concern.
If you wanna look more into it, I'll include the resources I've used!
I found info and resources on r/childfree on reddit! There is a lot of info on their wiki about different types of sterilization and what to expect from them.
There's also lots of personal stories from people talking about their procedures, and what they went through with insurance, doctors, recovery, and their social life
Here is their wiki
Info on different types of sterilization
Info for getting immediate help (abortion)
Here is a list of childfree friendly doctors that can help:
US - Alabama to Georgia
US - Hawaii to Massachusetts
US - Michigan to New York
US - North Carolina to Tennessee
US - Texas to Wyoming, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and thr U.S. Virginia Islands
Canada
International/outside of the US and Canada
I hope you are able to get the procedure you want and everything goes smoothly for you!

24 January 1972 Japanese soldier Shoichi Yokoi was found hiding in the Guam jungle.
Initially, Yokoi served with the 29th Infantry Division in Manchukuo. In 1943, he was transferred to the 38th Regiment in the Mariana Islands and arrived on Guam in February 1943. When American forces captured the island in the 1944 Battle of Guam, Yokoi went into hiding with nine other Japanese soldiers. Seven of the original ten eventually moved away and only three remained in the region. These men separated, but visited each other periodically until about 1964, when the other two died in a flood. For the last eight years, Yokoi lived alone. He survived by hunting, primarily at night. He also used native plants to make clothes, bedding, and storage implements, which he carefully hid in his cave.
On the evening of 24 January 1972, Yokoi was discovered by two local men checking shrimp traps along a small river on Talofofo. They had assumed Yokoi was a villager from Talofofo, but he thought his life was in danger and attacked them. They managed to subdue him and carried him out of the jungle.
Yokoi later said that he expected the local men to kill him at first but was surprised when instead they allowed him to eat hot soup at their home before turning him over to the authorities. He was in relatively good health, but slightly anemic due to a lack of salt in his diet according to doctors at Guam Memorial Hospital.
"It is with much embarrassment that I return," he said upon his return to Japan in March 1972. The remark quickly became a popular saying in Japan. He had known since 1952 that World War II had ended but feared coming out of hiding, explaining that "We Japanese soldiers were told to prefer death to the disgrace of getting captured alive."

The Wilderness (The Gap Years part 27)
July 20th 2019
Scapegoat Wilderness, MT
The road trip crew hike through some of the most unbroken wilderness in the Lower 48 to reach an enchanted prison. The humans have an unsettling discussion along the way.
...................
Teddy Roosevelt was a conqueror. He broke monopolies, created the FDA, and most relevantly, fought to conserve natural resources, but he became president in 1901. Claiming he was better than the average man of his time is passing a low bar. No matter how diverse his battalions, this was the man who got elected with the promise that “speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far”. Thanks to him, there are 1.5 million acres of wilderness in Montana. Thanks to him, Guam and Puerto Rico are governed from Washington DC. He wanted the Philippines too.
There are no roads here, and motor vehicles of all types are banned. The prison lies deep in the woods, built underneath a glacier that google says hasn’t shrunk as much as it should. That was phase one of their research: the internet. Sierra’s an expert in weird conspiracy theories and old forums, they didn’t end up finding much. Disappearances in 1.5 million acres of wilderness could just as well be caused by bears, not elves. Then, phase two was more personal. They circled the Scapegoat Wilderness, talked to locals, and tried not to react when their vision flashed blue while talking to a young-looking farmhand at a general store. Usually, Brian is their go-to for intel, but Sierra started talking to her about truck stuff and suddenly the elves thought they could risk a bit of mind control. She didn’t end up knowing anything useful though.
They’ve gotten good at identifying elves in a crowd. Pointed ears are a dead give away, of course, but many elves hide theirs or have them altered. Anyone too graceful is suspect, especially if they are mostly wearing a single color or animal motifs. Every elf they’ve met has been a blue-collar worker, a pattern that Marin and Zerada expect to continue. They haven’t met any prison guards, but they did meet a half-elf plumber who’d worked in the prison. Supposedly there was no risk in charming half-elves. They have no magic, but also none of the dangersense that might alert a real human to the same attack. Clay and Zerada stalked him home, charmed him into leaving his door open, and took photos of what looked to be his notes. It still felt a little wrong to be in his house though. Clay tresspasses a lot, but that’s always on abandoned sites. There were kids in the house.
He’d asked if half-elves would be immune to the plague, or if the Mercurali had decided they were a necessary sacrifice. He almost said nobility instead, but caught himself. He needs as much goodwill as he can get, especially if that hunch is true. Zerada hadn’t had a clear response. She’d never studied biology beyond the basics. Only commoners, or weirdos like Gullin Eburos, (she clarified that he was a high noble who became a doctor for some reason) properly studied natural sciences. What did the nobility do then? Seemingly a lot of war, politics, and obeying their own elaborate social etiquette. Clay would make a joke about human and elven nobles being the same if he didn’t think it would cause a week-long argument.
Once they gathered their intel, they had to gather supplies. The glacier-prison is not only in the elven world, but also twenty miles deep in the woods. Clay thinks he could hike that distance in a day, but with Sierra and the elves it would take two. Considering the thousands of feet of elevation change, they blocked off three days to do it, and are planning the prison break for the night of the 20th. The return trip will be much faster, as they’ll have dozens of magic elves with all their skills to whisk them away, or they won’t be returning at all. Marin’s messenger bag also makes it easier to pack.
They have food for a week, tents, and sleeping bags rated for colder weather. They also have hand tools for Sierra, climbing gear for Brian’s disguise, and two more human handguns for the anti-magic zone under the glacier. They haven’t bothered with suppressors. Those things don’t work like the movies anyway. Marin has assured them, a little uncomfortably, that the guns will be especially lethal because elves won’t be able to deflect the bullets to the parallel world. Brian is even more uncomfortable with this, as if he hasn’t been swinging that ice axe around like it was meant for war.
Then they began to hike. It’s a little odd to travel without the car after so long. Sierra’s fancy electric prototype had kept them all grounded in reality, but deep in the woods, this feels more like a fantasy story. They are the outsiders with their brutish gunpowder guns intruding into a magical otherworld. The pristine nature around them doesn’t help the feeling. Some nights, Marin would share the history of his world. Ten thousand years ago or more, elvenkind industrialized through a period a lot like what the human world is experiencing now. The wilderness was reduced to a few small patches like this, and the sea levels began to rise. After centuries of turmoil, they stopped it, and brought their world to a place of nearly-sacred stability. It’s clear to Clay that he doesn’t think humanity will have the same success.
Marin’s faint smirk while describing the first truly massive wildfires to ravage the west coast is the final straw. He’s killed for this elf, (and bragged about it to another) for what? For the plague laboratory that had clearly been running since before the Mercurali took the throne? For Marin’s admittance that his mother attacked Project Excalibur? For Zerada’s cavalier attitude about mind-control against anyone without magic, or the way that Marin will do the exact same thing but with a vaguely sad look on his face? Clay isn’t sure if they could stop the conquest if they did retake the throne, or if the cat, maybe a sabertooth, is really out of the bag. He is sure that the elves don’t want to try.
Clay somehow goes to sleep that night with the fitting howling of wolves all around him. He can’t even tell Brian about it, because he’s also sharing a tent with Marin and while the elf can fall asleep anywhere, he also wakes up if they so much as ruffle a sleeping bag. He can’t snap at the elves without risking all of their lives, but even his level-headedness has limits. When the sun rises the next day, he stands in the gray overcast dawn and makes a decision.
“Hey, we humans are carrying this plan. Can we get a moment alone?” When he talks, he thinks about the mild inconveniences like Zerada’s feet on the dashboard or Marin demanding they stop at tourist traps. Not the visceral fear that they’ve been tricked into being the servants of conquerors. The elves casually agree to go off on their own for a bit. He holds Sierra’s magic tracking gadget to make sure they’ve left, then turns to his bleary companions.
“We’re the butt of a joke right now. The Lazarins had definitely been trying to take over the world first”. Clay explains his reasoning very quietly in the forest.
He expected the big reaction from Brian, but Sierra speaks first. “You sure? His mother attacked Project Excalibur, but she really seemed to like the human world. I don’t think someone who brought her son to a New York music festival would be out to conquer the place”.
Luckily, he thought of that too. “Conquerors can like the aesthetics of the places they destroy. That doesn’t mean anything”.
Brian kicks a rock with his foot. “I know you’re saying we can’t trust Marin, but what he said made sense. He said his family hadn’t wanted to conquer the human world, but public opinion was different. That’s the sort of backing that could drive a coup”.
“I thought coups didn’t care about public opinion?” Clay snaps.
“I’m using the word coup because that’s what they’ve used. Regime change, revolution, whatever. We’ve been seeing all summer that common people are involved”.
He’s right. They have. Brian runs a hand through his hair. He’s nervous. “ I don’t think Emer Sondaica was planning anything, she just had a grudge against nukes that brought down Excalibur”.
Sierra smiles back. “Her twin really liked that stuff. Sibling rivalry, maybe? She attacked the lab because Cai was there?”
This isn’t going as planned. “How do you explain Marin and Zerada then? All the little comments that they make? The mind control? Trust me, I can tell when I’m talking to someone who’s talking down”.
“People do that to me a lot more than you” Sierra scoffs. “I hear you though”.
“So what are you saying? Emer only killed humans over a grudge, but her spare son is out here to grow an empire?”
Brian and Sierra look at each other and nod. Brian crouches on the dark ground and takes a deep breath. “Political movements have… inertia. Something seems impossible until it can’t be ignored anymore, and then the same people claim that it’s impossible to stop. Maybe our friends weren’t raised to conquer the earth. Maybe they were. What matters now is that Ishtar Mercuralis is and it will be a lot easier for Marin to stage a coup and replace her at the top than to stop the process entirely”.
Sierra stares down. “So…”
“Why are you asking me? I’m the dumb blond”.
She throws her hands in the air. “Oh great and intelligent Brian Whitaker! Who never used sparknotes in his life! Share your wisdom with us!”
“Our friend, Dirt, is right. We’re totally the butt of the joke, but if we make ourselves essential and don’t get brainwashed, then we’ll have power when it actually matters”.
That’s really what it’s come down to, isn’t it? A month ago he proposed they betray the elves in return for their own safety, but with a plague brewing there won’t be any safety without a cure. The heirs’ lives are in their hands, but there’s nowhere for the three of them to run. Best case scenario, they somehow win and get the elven world to go back to sleep. More likely they’ll be collaborators standing beside the eighteen-year-old-looking elf who crushes the human race. They’ll be legends. Maybe the elves will put their faces on a new mountain.
“Don’t get brainwashed,” Clay parrots.
“Yup”.
“Maybe you should stop sleeping with the Spiders Georg of brainwashing people then”.
Brian stammers and awkwardly points back inside the boys tent, where his sleeping bag is. He has the look of a kicked puppy.
Sierra raises her hands. “We don’t have enough data to tell if she’s an outlier! Marin brainwashed us at the start”.
Clay picks a stick off of the ground. “So what? You hate her!” He breaks it over his knee.
“Yep. She’s creepy and Brian’s an idiot. No normal person would leave the elven world, come here, and choose to be treated like a James Bond love interest. There’s something up with her”.
“Parties and outfits can be fun, actually,” Brian replies.
“Good for you. You make a great couple”.
They do not manage to get back to the topic at hand before the elves return. They don’t bother to talk like that again before the next morning when they break down their tents and hike towards the glacier prison. At the top of a jagged cliff looking down at the broken blue ice below them, the team splits in two. Zerada, Sierra, and Clay will use the vents to find the engineering center and one cell block, while Brian will hunt for the other block alone.
Clay gives him a pat on the head, over his climbing helmet. “Don’t get brainwashed. Love you”.
He smiles back “You too. Don’t screw up.”
Sierra rolls her eyes and hands both of them a second magazine for their guns.
………………
History fun fact: Teddy Roosevelt was elected vice-president, not president, specifically to neutralize him with a useless figurehead position. Then McKinley got shot, and Roosevelt got a fancy new job! Pretty weird when the line of succession actually happens.
The Scapegoat Wilderness is real. The specific glacier is not, and I don't believe there are any glaciers in that area.
Next week, the prison break!

Yuuka Nakano, Ashley Butterfly, Rex oxford mills, Willow, and Jinx along with their fractions belong to me.
Van ink, Kali, Joshua, Fin, Ethan, Guam along with their fractions are in this. They belong to @demon-blood-youths
((Just a heads up: Grammar is not good and their will be heavy mistakes but this was written for fun so please enjoy. ))
After a few more hours, the check up for this year is finally done. Akiko was happily smiling at everyone who was sitting down looking too scared to speak. Even the remaining members of the DBT who got treated for it. They didn't say anything now scared once more.
"See? That wasn't so bad right? You guys are doing well and is treated from any wounds." she smiled sweetly to them but they only mutters not sure on how to answer that.
"Thank you Ophelia for helping me, same for the healers and the young ones." she smiled seeing Ophelia get head pets while giggling.
"Of course. I'm glad to hear that everyone is well. See guys? It was all over before you know it."
"Y..Yeah..t..that's n..nice.." Maggie grumbles while everyone was quiet. However, that's when Ophelia already unlocked the windows and doors so everyone can leave.
"Though, I hope we see you guys in the next check up." Akiko giggled sweetly to them but they only got more scared hoping to never see her in the next one.
"Yeah, thank you for everything Doctor!" Ink said happily.
"Yeah, thanks!" Jinx smiled.
"Y..Yeah, thank you.." Willow said.
"...R..right.." Ethan mutters.
"T..true. T..thank you." Fin said.
"Thanks.." Joshua said.
"T.t..t..thank....y..y..you.." Ashley whispered.
"Thanks doctor.." Rex said in a silent tone.
"Yeah..thanks.." Kali said.
"......thanks.." Yuu mutters looking down.
"Yeah, thank you....v..very much." Guam said.
"Your welcome sweeties! I Hope you enjoy your afternoons today!" she said as the fractions leave the building. In their minds though.
'NEVER..AGAIN!'
~~~~Outside of the Hospital~~~~~~
"Thank god we are out!" Fin said as everyone was sitting down but was trying to mentally relax from it. However, they only see some looking disturbed.
"Yeah, now we get why you guys were scared of her." Fin said rubbing his arms. "I hope we don't see her again for her treatment.."
"You and me both.." Guam said as everyone was trying to relax.
"Well, a...at least we are out and done.." Ashley said.
"True..but that reminds me.." Kali glares but grabs Navarro's jacket as he yelps to see some angry few. "As for you.."
"I know, I know! I'm sorry! I did say I would find a way to make it up to you guys for ditching you! I'm really sorry!" he said in a panic but he sees how angry some were due to it.
"You are so dead you know that right!? How could you!" she said as Navarro looks to the side.
"You can't blame me for that! I just panicked and...I don't know!" he said but Kali drops him as he slowly sits up to brush the dirt off his clothes.
"Whatever. You don't have to owe us back but that was a dick move of you." Rex said with arms crossed, seeing Navarro lower his head.
"I know..and I'll find a way to make it up to you guys.."
"Oh no, we know someone else will. You did ditch her and she's not happy.." Willow said but Navarro blinks before he remembers. "Oh shit.." He looks over seeing Jinx seeing her team alright but he sighed to stand up but goes to them as the cursed vixens saw him but Echo was looking ahead.
".....Umm...Echo?" she heard his voice but didn't face him. The fractions wonder what she'll say or do. "Look, I'm so sorry that I ditched you. I just...panicked and freaked out! I really didn't want to ditch you..I..." he saw her not saying anything.
"B..but I'm glad you got out and your fine! But I got the treatment too so we are-"
Suddenly, the fractions wince from a sound as the girls gasped and Shdwkyz had his eyes wincing from the punch seeing this. Navarro was holding his nose as Echo punched him in the face! She looks down but was silent.
"OWWWW!! ECHO WHAT THE FUCK-"
"HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!" she shouted glaring at him but she goes to grab his shirt to look at him. His green eyes met with angry red eyes from her normal green. Yeah, the elemental bomber was pissed.
"I.."
"You got the treatment yeah but what the fuck?!?"
"If you just listen to me-"
"NO! YOU FUCKING DITCHED ME! YOU SERIOUSLY WERE FUCKING SCARED THAT YOU WOULD DITCH EVERYONE THAT ARE YOUR FRIENDS!? EVEN ME!!" she shouted shaking him while he winces feeling blood running down his nose.
"W..wait wait wait! I'm sorry I just-"
"OH sure you are! Your fucking sorry but you think getting treated by that..that witch helps!? Do you have any idea how painful it was when you ditched us!? and Me!! Me, of all people!!" she shouted but looks at him. "I should fucking bomb your ass to the moon and down into the ground you traitor!" She really was angry but Navarro grips her wrists to see her angry.
"HEY GET OFF MY BACK! I SAID I WAS SORRY! I DIDN'T MEAN TO DITCH ANYONE! I WAS TRYING TO THINK OF A PLAN TO GET AWAY FROM THAT CRAZY DOCTOR!" he shouted back.
"WELL, YOUR IDEA FAILED AND WE ALL GOT TREATED ANYWAY! WHAT SORT OF PERSON DITCHES THEIR OWN FRIENDS!" she shouted back.
"HEY, IT WAS TRYING TO SURVIVE AND NOT GET KILLED-"
"THE FUCK WITH THAT!!" she shouted back.
"Guys, I think you both should calm down-"
"STAY THE FUCK OUT OF THIS, SHDKWYZ!" They shouted as he was shut down to be silent.
'Geez...'
"You seriously need to work on that if your planning on ditching your friends and people you care about, Navarro! I can't believe you!" she said mad.
"Again, WHY!? Haven't you seen how things work in horror movies! Most that stay and help end up being killed! I was thinking smart and trying to make a plan-"
"Which still failed you dumb ass!" she growls but looks at him. "You still ditched everyone. You still left us to that witch! And now you expecting the ones you ditched to forgive you? Oh sure, I'm sure they did after calming down! Well not me! I can't forgive you for that!!!!" she said each word jabbing his chest but he looks quiet.
"I'm still angry with you!! You seriously don't care and yet you were ditching everyone like you were saving your own ass! I didn't know you would be that low to ditch everyone and ME! I wouldn't ditch you even if I was scared and you did with everyone and me!!!" she said as Navarro looks down but he closed his hand into a fist.
"You let fear get to you and you ended up doing this just like back then!? What the hell is wrong with you and thinking it's fine to ditch them. Do you not care!?"
"I DO CARE! WHAT IS THIS SOME FUCKING LECTURE?! I SAID I WAS SORRY DAMN IT! YOU DON'T NEED TO RUB IT IN! I ALREADY GOT THAT ASSHOLE *points at Shdwkyz* DOING THAT ANYWAY! I DON'T NEED YOU DOING IT TO ME TOO!" he said but he was still mad.
"BECAUSE YOU-"
"JUST STOP AND FUCKING LISTEN TO ME YOU HARDHEADED FUCKING MORON!!" he shouted back glaring at her.
"I DON'T NEED YOU NOR ANYONE ELSE TREATING LIKE I'M ALWAYS GONNA FREAK OUT!! I'M NOT A TRAITOR!!! I DON'T NEED YOU WORRYING ABOUT ME!!!! BESIDES, IT'S NOT LIKE YOUR MY FUCKING GIRLFRIEND ANYWAY BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE TOO GIRLY OF YOU SINCE YOU TOLD ME YOU WANTED TO BE TREATED AS A EQUAL!!!?"
"......"
"WHY DON'T YOU STOP FUCKING SHOUTING AT ME LIKE YOU HAVE A STUCK UP YOUR ASS AND JUST DROP IT!!! I NEVER EXPECTED YOU TO FUCKING PUNCH ME ALL BECAUSE I FUCKING DITCHED YOU!! WHY DO YOU FUCKING CARE AND FEEL LIKE YOU WERE MOST HURT!? I DIDN'T ASK FOR YOUR SYMPATHY ALRIGHT!? WHY DON'T YOU JUST STOP SHOUTING AT ME, GET OFF MY FUCKING BACK, AND GROWN A BACK BONE, YOU FUCKING LOUD SHOUTING BITCH!!!" he screamed but Echo's eyes widen hearing this.
"........." The girls were shocked hearing that but said nothing as Echo looks down to slowly calm down. However, he looks at her confused before her upper part of her face was hidden by her wild blond hair.
Navarro was panting from his anger but he looks confused seeing Echo say nothing. However, his own eyes widen thinking of what he said to cover his mouth. Shit. Shit shit shit!!
"...W..Wait, Echo, I didn't mean-"
"............Save it. I think you did." she said looking angry but Echo was...crying? Wait, she was crying!? Navarro was about to say something but Echo turns to walk off to be alone.
"Echo! Wait!" he said about to stop her but stops seeing something thrown at his feet to fall back. He sees her holding a energy bomb as she was looking ahead.
"Echo!"
"JUST FUCK OFF ALREADY NAVARRO!" she said before rushing off.
"ECHO!! WAIT, COME BACK!" Jinx said as she and the cursed vixens goes to follow her worried. However, the other fractions were shocked at what Navarro just did. He didn't say anything but watches her leave. Though, he did see where she threw the bomb at that it almost hit him to look silent and down.
'Fucking damn it..what have I done?' he thought. The fractions said nothing but Ink had her arms crossed. Seems like the afternoon took a wrong turn here.
"I don't care who the hell she thinks she is, Francis. It's my name on the companies, the houses...the cars. The bar. The goddamn ranch and the oil fields are mine. You wanted a younger model and a fresh start and you got it. I..I just wanted a life..with you but I wasn't ever enough so here we are. I've moved on you've obviously moved on."
The sudden realization hit Frank Flannery like a Mack truck that he was indeed almost penniless all thanks to what? He desire for something new? He had loved Colleen at one point, then the anger took over. He could blame a million things on why he had treated her like he had during their ten years together. Col had been nothing but good to him, faithful and true right up to the dissolution hearing. He, on the other hand had literally fucked the sectary and was now paying for it, or rather, living paycheck to paycheck thanks to it. Falling head over heels in love with the feisty redheaded grey eyed woman that was due to be celebrating her 21st birthday in a matter of days had Frank sweating bullets. Lot rent was due, MaryKay wasn't feeling well - he had a sneaking suspicion as to why; he was praying that the milk from this week's pick up from the Eagle Eye Dairy was enough.
"Tell ya what, Frank. I've got a little investment property, it's a trailer park over on the back road to Hoyt's Hill."
Over and around the turn he could almost see the place she was talking about. They used to park up on one of side roads higher up and look down at the open lot.
"Over on Blackbird Mountain."
"Yep. You'd be doing park and lot maintenance but you could live their rent free with your family."
Frank Flannery was many things to many people but to Colleen he had been a menace. Yet she still helped him.
"You..really?"
"Yes. You need help and I'm in a position to offer it. You were a sonofabitch to me, She fucked me over to get to you...ya'll's kid is the innocent one in all this...and I'm not completely heartless.
'Flight 745 to Port St. Lucie now boarding.'
Colleen had always wanted to travel but in their time together Frank had never been much of a worldly explorer. He smiled at the fact that Col was following her heart.
"Where ya headed, Irish?"
"Off to the Cowtown rodeo to snag me a cowboy. Have a weekend of fun over at the hunt and riding club and get stoned and drunk off my ass."
Choking down a snort failed and Frank laughed. MaryKay stirred in the living on the ratty blue couch half covered with an afghan her mother had gifted them. An empty trash bag lined humongous pastel pink bowl lay on the coffee table next to a pack of open saltines and a can of Mr. Spritz Lemon Lime soda. He was nearly forty with a twenty one year old wife most likely about to bless the world with a being of their own creation and his dark haired green eyed wild woman of an ex was headed to parts unknown to let her considerably long hair down. He couldn't blame her.
"Be safe out there, Colleen."
"Will do...oh and I wouldn't worry about that check from Eagle Eye Dairy...it's padded nicely."
"How did you know about that?"
He could almost hear a smile in her voice as she dropped the third bombshell of his day.
"I know the owner, she mentioned seeing MaryKay at Doctor Nash's practice a week or two ago and she thought maybe you guys could use it. After all Eagle Eye's promise is all about looking out for the locals."
Her grandfather's nickname had been Eagle Eye. He, along with Harvey Starling and Col's aunt Eileen stepped in when her mother, Minnie had worked self almost into an early grave to make a life for the two of them after Jimmy Murphy had met a bad end one night.
"I don't deserve..."
"I know you don't deserve Jack shit from me but it's how I am, ok? Tell her to lay on her left side if she feels really horribly nauseous and sometimes humming helps."
Just like that Colleen was gone and the ear splitting voice from the Standing Rock airport told him the time in Japan and Guam and then told him to hang up.
'You never deserved a woman like her as a wife and you sure as fuck don't deserve to have her as a friend. That woman says jump you say how high, ma'am.'
His stern inner voice, which come to think of it sounded a hell of a lot like his younger brother Jackie; the one that Col had really truly loved, barked at him. For once in his life Frank Flannery obeyed advice from beyond the grave.
IV.
March 13, 2023
3:30 a.m.
Tumon, Guam
I am numb. I am writing this as I dejectedly wait for the taxi that will take me to Guam International Airport for my flight back to Manila. Near the end of last month, around the time I was in Baguio (or right after leaving Baguio), I was spiritedly playing the song Marching On by OneRepublic on repeat, eager to get on with the new month and leave the ghosts of February behind. I thought I was going to have cards to play when March comes around. But the month is not even halfway through, and my illusion is quickly coming undone. I am unraveling. I can imagine feminists and women empowerment advocates and gurus around the world collectively groaning from second-hand embarrassment.
The first week of the month became family week. One of my nieces had her first birthday party. I was early at the restaurant. Kept to myself mostly. Hogged the photo booth. Paid for a second cake because the custom one my sister ordered was running late. Played errand girl. Joshed with Jollibee the mascot. Gave some food to a man who came in looking for a meal. I was too queasy to eat much. The custom cake arrived at the last minute. As soon as it arrived, I took pictures of it and left the restaurant, right behind the photography crew. I booked a Grab car. The driver was mercifully stationed right across from Jollibee. I was deflated and depleted. Chronic fatigue is no joke.
I do not know exactly what possessed me to travel to my birth province the next day, but I did. I was playing punk or metal music part of my way there to tune out everyone in the mini-bus. I cannot recall the playlist that I found, but the songs in it got some arguably dark and troubling messages in them. I may had been trying to scare myself into a having a heart attack.
I met with my father and one of my brothers at the mall and tried to figure out finances. We could not. I was quite upset.
We went to the appliance store after that. I bought my youngest brother a small washing machine. I am not quite sure what ails him. My father said the doctor could not tell them. I wanted to lighten his load a little, so that he is not spending hours painstakingly doing laundry for himself and his big brother by hand. I did not get back to my “cell” in Q.C. until late that night.
The following three days I was sleepless and restless. I booked my trip to Guam and had been debating whether or not to go. I only had about six hours of sleep in all of those three days. Maybe less. I kept having bouts of numbness in my extremities that travel up to my neck that kept me awake. I ended up going and it was there in Guam that I found out Pop had passed away.
I was searching online to confirm his landline number to say hi to him when instead, I found his obituary. I had no words to describe all of the emotions that hit me all at once. I tried so hard to keep in touch with him, but I’d been repeatedly unsuccessful in calling or FaceTiming him on his iPhone soon after my last visit with him in April 2023. But since I had been quite preoccupied with my survival ever since, I guess I did not push as hard as I could have had to get ahold of him. The divorce cut me off from the only grandfather who showed me love. And I can only fight so many battles at once. On top of failing to visit with an old family friend in Guam, finding out about Pop’s death crushed my heart, my soul, and my spirit. He is gone from this world and I cannot grieve or cry hard enough. I cannot even bring myself to sign his guestbook for fear of saying the wrong thing and dishonoring his memory.
I could have stayed for two more days in Guam. The hotel room was paid for until the 15th. I truly did not know why I booked a premature return flight to Manila. I was not thinking clearly, obviously. I was and still am a mess. The grief made me panic. I thought I would have enough money to book a flight from Manila to Florida to see him laid to rest. No, I would not.
What is the lesson to be learned in all of this here? I honestly can’t say at this time. I had been told that obsessing over the could, should, and would haves is futile. Sayang daw ang panahon. There is no point pining for lost time. And I get it. I really do. But it is not easy to be objective about one’s internal experiences and life decisions. I am not OK. I’ll just have to be OK with that for the moment, I guess.
