Artbook stuff!

More devnotes (and my own rants lol) about some characters from Elheim : Rosalinde, Linharagos, Lydielle and the Celeste gang! (+ Amalia but I forgot her in the Drankengard/Drakenhold posts...)

Amalia first...

Sense of dominance or not, Amalia is towering the rest of the cast (at 2m30!) wielding a giant sword that is totes not inspired by a certain dark fantasy manga, and uses what is basically a door as a shield. Her strikes are wide (and wild) and she is basically introduced as what we would call a Gotoh unit in the FE fanbase in the chapter she's introduced in (basically coming handy in one of the few defence map of the game) however, unless you recruit her early by using cheese strats, by the time you can finally use her after defeating her in the arena (around early albion or late Bastorias?) she's not that impressive anymore : still a damn good unit, but not breaking the game in half

(especially since she can't access her beserk state)

Plot wise : she's a random who's looking to fight strong fighters, to actually manage to beat her and beat her berserk form (that is basically, her ancestor taking over her body to fight), she only accepts to help Gilbert'n'Alain during the Drakengard campaign for one map because Gilbert promised her that if they survive, he'll reopen the coliseum.

Alain's group can then recruit her by defeating her, and her berserk form, in the coliseum!

Design wise, the armored briefs is, imo, completely ridiculous especially given the otherwise okay-ish designs from Drakengard, but fwiw, I like her knees armor, even if I don't know what they're supposed to represent lol

On to Elheim!

I know, I added the image where she's damaged because we can't talk about Elheim and Rosalinde without sighing about, well, the sexualised designs and the overabundance of camel toes.

I know VW is known for its fanservice designs, but damn if Elheim was hit/designed with a "gotta make them sexy" hammer.

Rosalinde then - "deep brown skin" is used for dark elves in this game, it's nice to have some variation, especially when the "really tanned" persons living in the desert from the earlier setting were only... male.

Gameplay wise, Rosalinde might be one of the best units, an offensive nuke who can cheese the penultimate boss' gimmick even if she has paper thin defenses, imo she's basically a glass canon. I also really like her attacking animations with the lance (her weapon, even if she's a mage!), they're really fluid so while I know it's not really about "gameplay" it totes counts as to why I like to field her lol

Plot wise... Well, it's Elheim, and on paper, Rosalinde isn't that egregious, she's basically asking Alain (or more precisely Yahna) for help to save her country and her sister, who were both taken over by Zenoira - Rosalinde's seiyuu has a certain voice range (?) which really plays well in depicting her being worried and super pissed at Zenoira invading Elheim and brining harm to her people and beloved younger sister, but also manages to play her character being relieved when she realises her friend/retained who sacrificed herself to buy her time didn't die (and is ultimately saved by the party) while maintaining some sort of coldness/aloofness with the party, at least until her sister is safe because she doesn't trust humans (after all, they are the ones who invaded!) - after her sister is rescued though and her rapport convos are unlocked, we learn that she is a pretty playful person, who loves to tease people around, takes her duty seriously and wishes the best for her sister/wants to protect her, feeling like she let her down when she faced the Zenoiran forces alone.

That being said... Rosalinde is shoved in the "potential love interest who has a hands on approach" box and while it's only at the end of Elheim arc, the "love interest" angle really soured me a bit on the character, especially since, unlike Berengaria, Rosalinde can ditch her sister to marry Alain and become queen of Cornia, even when part of her arc has been trying to find allies to rescue her dearest younger twin and save her country :/

So plot wise I'm a bit meh about her, but gameplay wise? She's a beast!

Linaragos is our male elven archer!

"Sexy feel" of the design or not, at least on Pixiv, some artists are having a lot of fun about his lack of, uh, pants (and undies?).

While he looks serious, Linaragos can be playful and even entertains goofballs like Mordon, even if he plays the "only sane man" in their rapport convo when Eltrinde - basically the leader of the elves and a traditional "priestress" - ends up drunk by smelling his glass of wine.

Intimacy dialogue wise, in the loc version, Linaragos basically agrees to become Alain's object of desire so, uh, sure it's not as explicit as Alain and Berengaria kissing on screen, but there's that.

Gameplay wise, Elven Archers are basically support units - their conferal (adding magic damage to an ally's attack!) can be pretty busted, later on they can freeze foes with their arrows, and when they're healed, they heal the entire unit - but they need a bit of work to really shine, granted, given all the possibilities they open, I'm not surprised the game gives us three named characters in this class!

Plot wise, Linaragos leads a small army of elves trying to resist/fight back against Zenoira, but they're severely outnumbered - which echoes one of Alain's rapport conversations with, iirc, Hodrick, where they basically point out that Elheim's demography is quite poor compared to Cornia, which might be explained by the elves having a longer lifespan! - our army helps him, he recognises Rosalinde and agrees to help us free Elheim and save Eltrinde!

Lydielle (Ridiel?) is a half-elf who has the same "elven archer" class as Linaragos and Galadmir, but I liked how the devs apparently picked her haircut and hair color to give a contrast with the "pure-blooded" elves, and also her "cheeky and rebellious" phase, fitting since she's apparently 16 lol

Maybe her wearing red and orange also serves as a contrast with the other elven archers wearing primary green clothes?

I wonder what was the plot mentionned where she would have been one of Morard's agents - we know elves think bestrals (beastmean) are "unclean" which might echo the discrimination she faces by being a half elf?

Speaking of which, I really liked how her subplot - being discriminated against for being a half elf - while apparently being baseless since the playable elves never give her flack for not being a fully blooded elf, is actually illustrated by the NPCs! They are the ones who, for some, look down or straight up resent humans, consider bestrals "unclean" and, in her paralogue, rant about her not being an elf.

It's not given more attention because that's not what the Elheim arc is about, and Lydielle doesn't even have a convo with either Rosalinde or Eltrinde, but it plays with the general theme of "get rid of the common enemy and then rebuild the world to make it better than it used to be". I also love her recruitment conversations with Chloe - they become friends sure, but Chloe manages to convincer her that even if she might die and think her fight would have ultimately have been pointless against the Zenoiran invasion, her actions could still inspire people to take up weapons and even if she cannot be a knight of Elheim due to her half-elf status, she can still help people around.

Too bad she doesnt' have a lot of rapport convos, but fwiw, I like Lydielle.

Celeste is, much like Lydielle, someone who cannot become a knight of Elheim because she's not an elf.

Nonetheless, having been saved/raised by elves, she wants to help them and forms a militia, even as a mere human. Bar being the pure, innocent, naive etc etc human raised/saved/who lived with elves, what's most interesting about Celeste is that 1/she's another griffon knight and those units are busted 2/she actually manages to hire/join forces with former bandits we met, and who have a change of heart and accept to work under her orders.

Bar that, I don't have a lot to say about Celeste :(

Gammel!

Bandit 1, who was introduced in early Cornia, terrorising a village and slaughtering people - Alain'n'co defeated him and he begged for his life, saying that he had to resort to a life of banditry to pay for his sister's medical expenses, or some shady shit like that.

Alain can chose to put him in jail, or to let him go (and return to his sister) - the decision to let him go can be very controversial in fandom spaces, but plot-wise, it could be justified by Josef basically telling Alain that after Zenoira's invasion and ten years of them being in charge in Cornia, people are surviving and some might have turned to banditry because it was the only way to survive in this new world...

Alain's basically encouraged not to execute people, and it works with Gammel because, somehow, meeting a moron lord who doesn't execute him for doing bandit/thief things made him reconsider his life - Celeste apparently saved him and his sister and now he is part of her militia to protect, at least in the map when we recruit them all, elves from former members of his gang who want to sell some to make money. Emulating the moron lord who gave him a chance to start a new life, he doesn't kill his former allies, and instead hopes that they will turn over a new leaf, like he did.

So even if he looks like a traditionnal FE Bandit, Gammel really has a sister - and her existence is referenced in several of his supports, and even here, in the dev notes lol, good for him!

And I like how he continues, in the epilogue, to work with Celeste and Mandrin - judging by the notes, the trio "Celeste Mandrin and Gammel" was designed as some "do not separate" lol, if that "fantasy" (a headcanon?) of them hanging out with Gammel's sister is any indication!

Unit wise, he's a thief/rogue like Travis, aka supposed to be dodge tanks and quite fast, but... yeah :/

and Mandrin!

Gammel's childhood friend, who's also a bandit who attacked Sharon's church (earning Ochlys' eternal ire) and who also can turn over a new leaf if Alain spares him.

He joins in the same map as Gammel and Celeste and also became part of Celeste's group, and the epilogue reveals that he and Gammel's sister are getting along together, much to his chagrin.

Also I like his design even if I can't see the "scorpion" thing the devs mentionned :(

FWIW, I liked how he accepts that Ochlys hates him for trying to sack and pillage the church of Rondmort, even if personality wise, we're still on the "bandit with a heart of gold" thing.

I don't have a lot to say about those two, but Mandrin's class - Hunter - is cool and surpisingly useful - one of the few AOE attacks!

video games always want to put in a 'queen' animal variant as a gameplay boss even based on animals that don't naturally have that sort of structure and i could be alright with it even if non-fantasy bears don't spawn as a pack of lackeys from a queen bear IF they were willing to do something interesting with the visual design or lore of the queen at least but they never do, they always just make her the regular ones but bigger, she has maybe a facial modification or horns that look slightly cooler, Again i know this is stuff that most people don't care about so it would be stupid to use their resources on it, But if she doesn't look like this GTFO of my office

My character has two Deathclaw Gauntlets in their reference. One of my best friends tells me that there is a code to spawn them in. I now have a Deathclaw Gauntlet.

They leave.

Not knowing during Deerfest u can hang around and hear Ilmo say some very questionable lines in a very strange voice (though this is easy to miss becos the level is designed for Alan to GTFO of there)

the thing is i'm not like, inherently opposed to the concept of recruiting minthara in an overall good/not down with mass murder playthrough - though i do think she should at the very least be incompatible with halsin - but the way larian actually implemented it is unbelievably lazy and seems like a rushed low-effort response to appease fans more than anything. there's absolutely no indication it's a possibility to a blind first time player, it relies on the underbaked and inconsistent non-lethal mechanic (remember, if you try to knock out ulder during gortash's coronation he Dies No Matter What), and from an in-universe perspective it makes no god damn sense. she's the most actively militant of the goblin camp leaders. it makes no sense to leave her alive specifically while killing everyone else, she's not even the only tadpole-brainwash victim there! it makes even less sense to leave her alive specifically if you try to only kill ragzlin and gut and whoever else is necessary to gtfo, because you do not have any reason to believe she won't just wake up and rally the troops to try massacre some druids again.

and like, there was already a simple easy-to-install mod for months that did the exact same thing, and a hilariously complicated vanilla method, and a bog standard vanilla method that does lose out on the tieflings but doesn't require mass murder, for people who wanted the option. the actual developers of the game could not provide a way for a Good Character to recruit minthara that was more integrated into the gameplay and the story than a pre-existing mod. and if the excuse is that they didn't have the time for the new scenes and animations and voice acting that would necessitate, then they should've just waited to add her good recruitment until a point when her good recruitment was fucking finished and ready to add into the game as a complete feature. but fans wanted it! so they got it immediately! and god knows if they'll add another update for it now!

I'm really unsure how much stock i should put on Kaga's interview statement that you're meant to interpret Sigurd as an impulsive idiot who was too stupid to realize that he was being put into a very obvious trap throughout his campaign

Sigurd's death scene always read to me as the audience being meant to be both impressed by Arvis' intelligence and horrified at what's happening to the cast, not as "Sigurd is such a dumbfuck for falling for such a painfully obvious ploy, Arvis got really lucky that his biggest opponent is this much of a dimwit lol"

There's a huge difference between pre!Silesse!Siggy and post!Silesse!Siggy.

Chalk it up to Deedee being missing, living a few months in what is supposed to be a cold viper's nest (tfw Rahna's bros in law don't like her sitting on the throne) or his family being framed for Kurth's death despite years of loyalty by fellow Granvalle people (+ Claud's prophecy that things are going to suck), Siggy mellows a bit.

Then Ethlyn, Quan and Altena eat sand, and Siggy makes the decision to order the kids/youngsters to gtfo - he might still be an idealist at heart and trust that, at least, some people in Granvalle aren't part of the conspiracy to frame him and his dad for the murder of the King - maybe if he can talk to Azmur everything will be "okay" again - and yet, he isn't willing to risk the lives of the kids or the ones who want to get out of this mess, because there is a risk he's going to die, and he's now aware of it.

Post!Silesse!Siggy, especially after his dad and Ethlyn's deaths, reads as desperate - desperate to cleanse his family's name, but also to find allies and make sure the Granvalle he served - under Azmur - still exists.

Of course we know what happens, but fwiw, Siggy is at first doubtful when Velthomer suddenly sides with them to toast Reptor, but thanks to Aida's assurance - and no prior ill feelings against Arvis, who is, as far as Siggy knows, someone who was in Belhalla, gave him a nifty sword and serves the royal family more closely than anyone else - he accepts to follow her plan...

Only to be toasted in turn.

IMO, it's less than Siggy is an impulsive idiot, but he is a naive and idealist man who has full trust in the people he serves (the Heim royals) : sure he was played, but just like Reptor and Langobalt (or Lombard as he is now know) and, ultimately, Arvis himself.

Arvis and Manfroy fooled Jugdral, so it reads a bit as unfair to single out Siggy as being a moron because he was played.

Bar the memes, I wouldn't say it's Arvis being intelligent - but him finally showing his real cards (even if we got hints when he works with Manfroy, and Reptor wondering what the fuck he is doing), that is being unrepentant and torching (gameplay wise, at least in this cutscene) his own brother for the sake of reaching his dreams, and securing Deedee at the same time.

Both Siggy and Reptor trusted Arvis, and Arvis pissed on that to kill them with their pants down : much like ASOIAF's Tywin gambits, this isn't being more intelligent than the others, it's being more ruthless by betraying everyone and everything to reach his own ends.

However, unlike his bootleg copy, Arvis won't enjoy pots of tea and pastries during his retirement : by the time Gen 2 pops up, Oldvis lost everything he onced had, is manhandled by his own son, ignored by his own people, has his "grand ideals" twisted and torn beyond recognition, and his batman gambit to save the hunted children kind of falls flat, because he cannot save his own son(s) nor his beloved daughter.

And to add more salt to the wound, ghost!Deedee hangs out with ghost!Siggy and never asks about him - you can even read between lines that Deedee "accepted" her death at Julius' hands, instead of rewarping or whacking him with the Book of Naga because that would mean she'd reunite with Siggy, Arvis (and Julia, by the same occasion :'( ) be damned.

i'll be up front with you mate and say that i'm stoked te FUCK for the remake. i have actually not watched the new trailer, i have not watched any new gameplay videos, i have not played the demo. i have not read any new articles and i have hardly kept up with the news at all. i watched the first couple of trailers including the Maria, Angela, and Eddie reveals and then stopped.

it looks beautiful. i can't fucking wait to be back in my foggy little town.

that said, i have my concerns -- tho my concerns actually don't align with the popular ones that're around, lmao. i'm not worried about Angela or Maria or Eddie or Laura or Mary or James yet. personally, i can't give a shit until i have the controller in my hands and i'm playing it for myself. i refuse to judge and i refuse to engage in extended commentary or debate about the characters until i get to have my own experience and have time to absorb it. (tho of course i am extremely concerned about a misogynistic or sexist james but i'm definitely keeping a lid on the worries lol.)

so my actual concerns? well.. i'm chinhands at some of the nurse redesigns, i'm not gonna lie. squinting a little hard at a couple of them, mainly because of (what appears to be absolutely 100% clear) fanservice and oversexualization because HEHE LOOK IT'S THE SH2 BOOBY NURSES. like yes we all know that masahiro ito is perpetually horny but come on.

when watching the maria reveal trailer, the one thing that REALLY bugged me about it were the sun shafts through the windows. like.. what the fuck. are those bright-ass sun shafts DOING coming in thru the windows. like can i help you?? hello it's super foggy outside why are there YELLOW SUN SHAFTS coming in thru the WINDOWS????

.. and then i thought about it. because, well like: what if it's a projection from James. what if those sun shafts are halluncations; what if he's reaching for hope (despite this being a hospital) in a place that's supposed to provide hope (despite this being a hospital and a place where, yanno, his wife definitely did not receive hope) and so he imagines sun shafts being there because that's what he expects from the imagery. what if it's an illusion provided by Maria?; or what if it's a reflection of the EARLY days of Mary's illness when he and Mary HAD hope that there would be a cure and thus sun shafts on a spring or summer day thru the windows light up the room and provide hope, and he's reflecting back on that because he's currently in silent hill hoping to find his dead wife.

sooooo y'see?? while there are some head-scratching details going on in what i've chosen to look at so far, the concern i had about fucking inexplicable sun shafts thru the windows can actually be explained. but also i'm a fucking psychology nerd and i live and breathe and foam at the mouth about this shit. i fucking LOVE symbolism and i WILL be breathing heavily and chewing my hands.

but uhhh lol anyway LOL, i'm excited for it. i don't expect "perfection" and honestly i don't have any hard expectations: i only expect that the characters are being treated with respect and that they're given their due.

clearly, there have also been dialogue changes in the game that got me going like 👀👀👀👀👀 because i fucking LOVE that shit (sometimes). like. .. ok.

what really irks me about the climate surrounding sh2 is that the large majority of the fandom can't fucking stop sucking off the line delivery and the "david lynch vibes" and just the entire fucking original game in general. like i can't fully get into it here ofc but i'm sick of everyone being so deep in the aforementioned's pubes that they lose absolute shit about it. like it's either guy cihi's line delivery or gtfo. it's so asinine, it's so pretentious, it's so stupid.

i'm tired of the "david lynch line delivery" stuff. i'm tired of it. it's so pretentious and it's dumb. i'm looking forward to fresh new voice acting and new lines that will give the characters another edge and outlook.

BUT IN ESSENCE, here's what i really have to say:

do not. do NOT. play the game with expectations. and i know that is hard; i know that people have been chatting and that there has been negativity out the wazoo. and that's why i've been avoiding it. i watch what i want to watch and hear a couple stupid things through the grapevine (mostly of fans being idiots lol) but other than that i've chosen to just be excited to play it.

but just do your best to NOT play the game with ANY expectations. and PLEASE!! remember that first impressions, while of COURSE very important, are not the end-all. they are only the FIRST IMPRESSIONS; your opinion can change. your viewpoints and consideration can change.

so when you play the game for the first time, stop. don't build any solid feelings about it yet unless something REALLY gets you. sleep on it. digest it. keep an open mind and go back to to play the game AGAIN, because --

EVERYONE NEEDS TO REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT PLAYING THE ORIGINAL SILENT HILL 2, SO DO NOT EXPECT THE ORIGINAL SILENT HILL 2.

and i know it's going to be hard for a LOT of people to divorce that. but i know that i'm going to get excited and post a little about the game after i play but i'm going to also endeavor to reserve my REAL opinions for AFTER multiple playthroughs, because i do not think it's very fair to the game nor myself and my critical thinking skills to judge it after one playthrough. this will require multiples for a full impression, and i feel this way VERY ADAMANTLY about the original SH2, too.

i'm excited for the remake. i am going to be buying a ps5 specifically for this game to play it on my TV. i'm stoked. i'm nervous. i'm so excited. South Vale looks so fucking beautiful and i LOVE South Vale so much. environments are important to me, this whole entire town is important to me (and GOOMT probably has a lot to do with that, ngl LOL), these characters are important to me. i care about how they're going to be portrayed. i care about the lore, a lot. i care, but i'm remaining neutral-positive until i have a chance to play, fully digest, and think.

To play this game u gotta understand the law enforcement is officially against the android rebellion and civil rights movement in general, that's one of the reasons Hank just doesn't care bout the police by the end anymore and mf just gtfo.

In HPR Allen just confirms the orders are "arresting" androids or gunning 'em down if they resist. The DPD, the feds and the national guard are working on the same shit. I think Allen got a similar opinion to those cops or he really doesn't care what to call everything that's happening, he just wanna do his job even if he's impressed by Connor.

In a world where the androids won it would fall into the same issue we got nowadays, unfortunately androids would become "a minority" to get abused by cops - cuz that's one of the metaphors David Jaula uses in his shitty ass writing, it's explicit in the game.

So, no...i know u know what i'm criticizing.

I ain't talking about pov justifications or if the cops are wrong or right in "wanting to protect the city from defective androids that were tools taking care of kids few days ago and now are walking on the streets as if they're people", i'm talking about % of specific events happening. Be aware public opinion is a false alarm. U don't get support from everybody, u just shocked the whole world and they gonna act in a defensive way - public opinion supportive means some groups ain't hating u anymore and are actually supportive in androids having civil rights, what i bet doesn't make even half of the population - what should be something for a country where hating androids is almost a rule in a way u dehumanize 'em for 'em looking "too human" so u don't feel guilty at all. People questioning things to the android side is already a bad signal for a corrupt gov controlled by a megacorp like that, people questioning about it is enough to force the fucking president to do something. But will it be enough? I DOUBT IT.

Politics is also a dangerous game, we've been seeing propaganda war at least 3yrs in 2 major conflicts that still happening till today.

Internet posts won't do shit and i dare saying this is where android support in dbh falls, cuz we don't see any human marching with the androids, making protests in favor of androids. Not even the mfs that were protesting wanting jobs and android ban (cuz they were taking jobs).
