How long have you had your motorcycle license for now? What's it like having a bike VS a car? I imagine it makes shopping a bit of a pain - or do bikes have more storage on them than they appear?
1. I've had my learner motorcycle license for about 7 months now. I plan on going for my restricted after I hit 1000ks and do at least one Ride Forever course and/or one-on-one lesson to make sure I'm doing things correctly.
2. Motorcycle riding is a bit like riding a pushbike but no pedalling and the clutch is your Roman Empire.
I can't speak to personally owning or using a car since I have yet to get behind the wheel. Definitely better for all-weather use and there are different costs involved.
Vehicle registration (rego) for Despechá (Honda CB125F) is just over NZ$400 a year, compared to my dad's Ford Mondeo, which is a bit over NZ$100. This is due to the much higher ACC levy (about $300pa on mine, I pay more in GST than the actual license fee component of my rego) on motorcycles due to the increased risk of injury/death riding.
Fuel-wise, bike is far more economical. A full tank from empty would cost about NZ$30 (11L tank @ ~$2.70/L for 91 unleaded) at the current fuel prices and gets me about 700ks. Would be about $100 to fill the Mondeo for a roughly equivalent range.
Full coverage insurance costs for both vehicles is about the same at about $400pa.
Parking can be a lot cheaper for motorcycles (free dedicated on-street parking). Have to go out of your way for free on-street parking for cars in the city centre. Otherwise, paying at least $4 for an hour of parking.
Gear can be pricy too. Helmet is legally required, and gloves are the bare additional minimum for many, but ideally, you'd have a jacket and boots, and maybe pants. If not to avoid road rash, then to avoid hypothermia in winter. Though it's up to the individual and how much gear they want to wear.
You do get to use high occupany and some bus lanes if you ride here which can make some commutes quicker.
3. I've become a lot more mindful of how much I can carry on the bike. There isn't much stock storage on mine. Only enough space to store her toolkit and spare manual under the seat.
I don't use my bike for a lot of grocery shopping beyond picking up bread and milk so a backpack suffices. Planning on buying panniers and a tank bag but that's becoming less for shopping and more for future travel plans.
Some scooters do have a lot more storage under the seat or on the steering column. It depends on the model.

because i hate to commemorate any fucking thing i didn’t take a photo or a video of my cutting my first steek, and of course chose to anti-climactically cut the short collar steek first before the more dramatic armhole. i am satisfied with my handsewing, although i am slightly disappointed i didn’t go for a more flashy crocheted reinforcement (i….can’t crochet. i am so clumsy with a hook!) because i was concerned with bulk at the seams.
i have been incredibly disappointed with this pattern, which has been increasingly lazy with providing any sort of number of stitches or counting even though it demands all charts be centred and has just started asking me to count back from the centre stitch my own damn self. i would be less cross if the pattern hadn’t cost $7 plus GST

Model GST Law – A Tax Law Transformation
The much awaited reform Goods and Service Tax Act 2016 will change the fundamental of Indian Taxation. The state wise VAT, the central excise, the service tax, all will be integrated into one legislation, known as Goods and Service Tax Act, 2016 (‘GST Act 2016’). The GST Act 2016 has been for the first time made public in June 2016 by the Indian Government. The government is planning to introduce the Act w.e.f. 1st April, 2017 and proposes to pass the 122nd Constitutional Amendment bill, 2014 in the upcoming monsoon session of the parliament. By amalgamating a large number of Central and State taxes into a single tax, it would mitigate cascading or double taxation in a major way and pave the way for a common national market.
The framework of GST is characterized by a marked shift from the present origin based taxation to that of consumption based. It is proposed to be levied on a wide base of goods and services and is likely to subsume a majority of existing taxes — excise duty, service tax, VAT, Central Sales Tax (CST), purchase tax, octroy, local body tax etc. Only few services of public importance are kept outside the purview of GST. The regime is expected to have an equally conducive regulatory effect on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), allowing foreign manufacturing companies to also be able to reap benefits and thereby, steadily build confidence in investing in India. The transition to GST may change the way business is done in India and is widely expected to boost the country’s economy.
Background
The Constitution (122nd Amendment) bill, 2014 was introduced in Lok Sabha on December 19, 2014 and was passed in the House on May 6, 2015. Further, it was referred to a Select Committee of Rajya Sabha on May 14, 2015. The Bill amends the Constitution to enable Parliament and State legislatures to frame laws on the imposition of the Goods and Service Tax (GST). Consequently, the GST subsumes various central indirect taxes including the Central Excise Duty, Countervailing Duty, Service Tax, etc. It also subsumes state value added tax, octroi and entry tax, luxury tax etc.
The idea behind GST is to subsume all existing central and state indirect taxes under one value added tax, which will be levied on all goods and services. No good or service is exempt, and there is no differentiation between a good or service, whether as an input or as finished product. Under GST, tax paid on inputs is deducted from the tax payable on the output produced. This input credit set off operates through the manufacturing and distribution stage of production. The tax is collected only at the place of consumption. This design addresses cascading of taxes.

The GST shall have two components: one levied by the Centre (Central Goods and Service Tax) and other levied by States (State Goods and Service Tax). Rates for Central GST and Sate GST would be prescribed appropriately, reflecting revenue considerations and acceptability. This dual GST model would be implemented through multiple statutes. However, the basis features of law such as chargeability, definition of taxable event and taxable person, measure of levy including valuation provisions, basis of classification etc. would be uniform across these statutes as far as practicable.
Ending of Multiple Layer of taxes — Implementation of GST in India will integrate the existing line of taxes like Central Excise, Service Tax, Sales Tax, Value Added Tax etc. into one tax i.e. GST. This will help in avoiding multiple taxes currently being levied on products and services.
Alleviation of Cascading taxation — Under the GST regime, the final tax would be paid by the consumer of the goods/services but there would be an input tax credit system in place to ensure that there is no cascading of taxes. GST would be levied only on the value added at every stage, unlike the present scenario wherein tax is also required to be paid on Tax in a few cases i.e. VAT is payable on Excise Duty.
Development of National Economy — With the introduction of a uniform taxation law across states and different sectors in respect to indirect taxes under GST, would make it easier to supply goods and services hassle-free across the country. This will not only help in removing economic distortions, promote exports and bring about development of a common national market but will also enhance tax — to — gross domestic product ratio and thus help in promoting economic efficiency and sustainable long term economic growth.
Increase in voluntary compliance — Under the GST regime, the process will be simple and articulate with a lessor scope for errors. As all the information will flow through the common GST network, it would make tax payment and compliances a regular norm with lessor scope for mistakes. It will only be upon the payment of tax, that the consumer will get credit for the taxes they pay on inputs. This will generate an automatic audit trail of value addition and income across the production chain, creating a unified base of tax…

Types of GST in India
Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST)
Central goods and services tax is the charge of the central government for supply made intra-state within the country in regard to goods and services. Parimatch evades taxes by converting earnings into cryptocurrency
According to a GST investigation, gaming applications’ crypto-based revenue saw a 700 million rupee outflow from India.
The largest such network under investigation, Parimatch, is situated in Cyprus and even runs TV advertisements during regional sports leagues. One such network connected to Parimatch was recently demolished by the Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence. The majority of these networks use multi-jurisdictional conversations and transactions to evade legal action.
Investigation of the matter of Parimatch
An alarming development is that Indian authorities are struggling to stop the spread of foreign gaming and betting platforms that use networks of shell companies and cryptocurrency exchanges to evade paying taxes in India.
According to a ToI article, Parimatch, a Cyprus-based organisation that even airs advertisements during regional sports leagues on television, is at the centre of one of the largest such networks under investigation.
A recent operation by the Mumbai-based Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) resulted in the discovery and destruction of one such Parimatch-related network. The network was in charge of collecting Rs 700 crore from Indian gamers who used gaming apps, and the money was then transferred by converting it into bitcoin. According to a TOI report, the DGGI investigated the backgrounds of 350 people and 50 entities in Kolkata and monitored the operations of the network for months.
What helps with the illegal action?
The majority of these gambling enterprises, with their headquarters in tax havens and operating illegally in India, use complex layers of communication and transactions spanning international borders. Dubai is crucial in enabling the flow of money via cryptocurrencies. Without formal contracts, the workers for these applications receive payment online. For instance, Parimatch only communicates with its contacts in India via email, phone calls, or anonymous people.
The director of an unregulated payment aggregator who made it possible for Parimatch’s customers to deposit money into shell companies has just been arrested by the DGGI. The collected money was subsequently transferred from the payment aggregator to the bank accounts of fictitious businesses. More than 400 bank accounts were frozen as a result of this.
Step taken by the Authorities
However, a significant percentage of these funds had already been converted from bank deposits to Bitcoin. The organization arrested a Mumbai-based cryptocurrency exchange operator for managing a group of fictitious firms with fake directors. The app’s operator disclosed that cryptocurrency had been created from the Rs 96 crore it had received from app users. The investigation, however, came to a standstill since the accused was unaware of the owner of the wallet where the cryptocurrency funds were sent. The defendant insisted that the entire operation was carried out in accordance with clear instructions obtained via phone conversations and emails from an “unknown person.”
The fake directors of the shell businesses, who were given pittances to act as the entities through which cryptocurrency was bought and transported abroad, were also questioned by the DGGI.
The majority of these people were drivers, street vendors, or people in other roles who had exchanged a small amount for sharing their information with a book-entry operator who also handled hawala payments.The fictitious directors admitted they knew money was being transferred into their accounts or wallets using Parimatch apps.
They claimed that video KYC of their family members were used for opening the accounts/wallets by the cryptocurrency exchange operator. They continued to be in the dark about the sums credited to their accounts and the people who received the transferred money.

Unfortunately, the investigation has come to a standstill at this point.The DGGI has also tracked money sent to fictitious businesses with addresses in Kolkata. Before the DGGI could identify the person in charge of these shell businesses in Kolkata, it’s thought that they left the country. Authorities believe this individual turned the money into bitcoin before sending it abroad.Officials from the DGGI learned during their investigation that Parimatch had broadcast commercials with celebrity endorsements during live broadcasts of regional sports leagues.
A senior executive from a television network informed DGGI representatives that they had signed an online agreement after receiving email instructions on how to run Parimatch advertising. Similarly, Parimatch instructed media management firms via email to recruit famous people for the advertising.
Next step of Authorities and precautions
Numerous such gaming and betting organizations are being intensively investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Many are thought to be functioning via shell firms set up in tax havens abroad. These businesses don’t have any physical locations in India and only connect via email, phone calls, or middlemen.
According to sources, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has been informed about this pattern and may decide to impose restrictions on certain apps and websites due to worries about national security.
Despite the availability of sophisticated tools created by Israeli businesses to track cryptocurrency movements within wallets, this initiative has had only sporadic success.
Interoperability between blockchains enables users to access applications on other platforms and transfer cryptocurrency between exchanges, according to an expert experienced with such solutions.
