Grubs! A Kind of Extended Talk
If you are here reading this, chances are you're either a curious extraterrestiral that somehow got hold of this blog's url (greetings!) or you are one of the lucky few who survived the hardships of the first stages of grubhood and somewhat safely matured to trollhood. An applause to you. 👏
Statistically speaking, only a measly 15% of a batch of grubs from a Mother Grub make it to trollhood. The rest either are stillborns, get eaten, get hunted down, or die of natural causes like illnesses or injuries. No matter your caste, you are special.
A curiosity, there is a 2% chance that a single grub egg might have twins. However, the two do not particulary tend to stick together, but they will recognize each other thru scent, both in their larval stage and adult stage.
There is also the typical rivalry that comes with such an occurrence and they might actually try fighting each other, so you might not even know you had a twin in the first place.
Anyway, what happens once the little guy pops out the slimy ball of mucus? Well, at that stage they are VERY small, around the size of your palm. Their eyesight is miserable, and they can barely emit noise. That's when they are allowed a period of stasis in the caves to absorb their egg's slimy nutrients, and grow a little.
Once their eyesight forms a little to the point they can distinguish color and depth, rougly 1.1 feet long, and their horns are no longer little nubs but somewhat a recognizable shape, that's when they're let out on their own.
If you're wondering, at this stage it's virtually impossible to tell a grub's gender (why would you assign it one anyway in the first place?).
Out there they have to survive on their own until they find a Lusus to bond with, unless they meet a horrible demise. Obstacles include the scorching sunlight, Lusii that see them as food rather than kin, and also poachers. Despite their size and apparent helplessness, they do have some tricks up their sleeve.
An example is Rustbloods and Goldbloods just now developing their telekinetic or psiionic powers, which actually makes them slightly more dangerous than a pupated troll, since they cannot control them.
People tend to avoid Cerulean grubs completely (or try to snag them for a ton of cash), because they tend to fire random mind control at their attacker when threatened. It does not last as much as a pupated troll, and feels more like a pounding migraine, but it is very annoying.
Then there's higher castes like indigos and purples, which have abnormal strength. A grub's bite is already nasty by itself as they have some sharp teeth, but when indigos and purples bite, they lock their jaws and don't let go until they're satisfied. And sometimes, they can dig right past your muscle tissue.
You'd think seadweller grubs are an easy catch since they're in confined areas like lakes and rivers and the sea, but those tend to have a strong scent that gets them a Lusus fast (highblood privileges I guess). And those Lusii tend to be very nasty. So, do not try.
Now that we got a look at the castes, what's next?
The Pupation process!
The journey towards trollhood requires some fundamental steps. The grub must be at least one sweep old, have a Lusus it bonded with, and feel safe in an enclosed area like a cave, tree trunk, etc.
Eventually, a grub will start to secrete a foam-like substance from their mouth that is greenish in color: That is them making the cocoon's silk and mixing it with their saliva.
They will soon find a comfortable spot to cocoon up, and each grub was observed to have their own style based on caste and personality: Some hang by a thread, others literally 'glued' themselves on a surface, some lazily sat on the floor like a sack of tubers, And plenty more creative ways.
The silk, when hardened, is surprisingly sturdy. Some trolls keep it as a memento after they pupate, or reuse it for clothing.
It takes a troll half a sweep to pupate, and what goes inside sounds gruesome, but fascinating: The grub's body 'digests' itself sort of, and some specialized cells start to rearrange that slurry around into the new body.
After they hatch, they will have one last reminder of when they used to be trolls: Troll scars. They're present on the sides of one's body, a little more below the armpits. Apparently the middle legs of the larval stage simply fall off and get used in the pupating process.
Everyone remembers the silly things we did when we first got out that slimy mess. Personally, I fell right on my face, rolled on my back, then went to get some water from my sink, which strangely didn't seem so scarily big and tall anymore. My lusus took a whole day to lick me clean. - SL

In regards to the rainbow stag beetles in my care
A while ago I noticed one of them has placed itself on the surface and seemingly died. It wasn't responsive and thats typically the behaviour of a dying grub. To go up on the surface and just lay there. I assume its to be picked up by a predator.
Initially I realised this happened when temperatures suddenly dropped and that they now needed extra heat. So they got a heatmat to stay consistently cozy. But I left the dying grub there. I dont like getting rid if grubs that have not yet turned dark brown or black (certain death)
It was still pale yellow/white even if unresponsive. So off it stays in its container.
In the past two days I noticed the heatmat timer started making weird noises and found it probably broke. So during replacing the timer today I checked up on the beetles and lo and behold....
Tumblr media
It has. Pupated.
Now if you don't know how beetles pupate, they usually construct a tough chamber using their spit from the soil around them. That chamber is rough and hard and perfectly safe and usually at the bottom of all the soil.
This guy.... Or... Gal.
This gal decided what use is a chamber to her?
She gave me a heart attack, she made me mourn. And now she is springing back from the dead like jesus with a middle finger to all usual signs of pupation and just. Pupated right there. On the surface. In broad daylight.
You know what good for her. Good for this girlboss- or guy with incredibly small horns. Godspeed to you.
I suppose we will check back in with her in a month. And see how shes doing with becoming an adult

Centaur Aliens Lifespan: 80 years Adult weight: 500-1000 kg Adult height: 2.5-4 meters Visual range: near infrared to blue Diet: Obligate hypercarnivores Centaurs' evolutionary ancestors were savanna pack predators who used ambush to hunt prey, nomadically following prey animal herds as they traveled round the global continent every year. Modern centaurs emerged when they started to use tools to help with hunting and land management, eventually resulting in some groups settling down and becoming reliant on fishing, animal agriculture, and food preservation to survive. Centaurs remain obligate hypercarnivores, meaning approximately 70% of a healthy diet is meat and animal products, but they opportunistically supplement their diet with grain, starchy tubers, and small amounts of roughage and vegetation. Similar to humans, centaurs have a bisex reproductive system with an inseminator sex and gestator sex who gave birth to live young, but functionally are more akin to Earth's marsupials. Centaur’s distant ancestors had larvae that lived in the soil like grubs before pupating into adults, and their viviparous silk eating clade first emerged after parental care of the larval stage evolved. While other members of their clade have development and pupation both happen in-utero, centaur litters leave the womb early and feed on their parent’s nutritive silk until they are large enough to pupate, spinning a cocoon on their parent’s back. They emerge as an imago, resembling a miniature adult with the physical capacity of an six-week old kitten. Centaurs are pseudo-eusocial, with a social structure hierarchy somewhat similar to meerkats. At its most basic level a clan consists of one matriarch, a female who is responsible for bearing the clan's young; the entourage, who are the matriarch's partners and usually mostly male; and the clan's "workers," who are not involved in reproduction. These non-reproductive clan members are generally either the matriarch's children, childless relatives, or individuals married in for their skills or political purposes. Read more about centaur biology on my janky eternally work-in-progress website here, or look at the old centaur reference post here. PATREON | STORE | Runaway to the Stars

Biiig image hopefully it like translates well but oughhg vultures,, Info/hcs about them below: (warning- long/wordy post)
General information:
Their entire lifecycle is based off bugs and thus they go through instars or larval stages of growth before they eventually cocoon and pupate and finally emerge as fully fledged adults
Through some strange modifications to their genetic and biological code, the ancients were able to make them grow their own biomechanical components through ingesting inorganic and organic material
Much more detailed under a microscope, their biomechanical structures are layered as if they were 3D printed on, but include interwoven organic components such as nerves and blood vessels
Vultures are opportunistic and will even result to cannibalism
Hatchling / 1st Instar:
multiple hatchlings will hatch all at once in a single clutch and immediately fight each other, eventually killing and consuming the loser, thus resulting in only a few grubs surviving
Nutrients gained from their siblings and material eaten from the environment around them is used to form the headpiece as quickly as possible
the modified head is used as its primary defense in the larval stage, calling adult vultures in hopes that it'll deter it's attacker- though the vultures that do arrive are most likely not the parents and will eat the grub at any given chance
5th Instar:
By now the grub has eaten as much nutrients as it could and will soon undergo pupation
The grub's first four legs have elongated to aid in travel as they will seek refuge in high perches where they will hide away and cocoon
They are swift and hard to spot in this stage because of their grime covered coat
Pupation / Near emergence:
After spinning its cocoon, the silk hardens and thickens into a tough ball
The silk is woven in with specific nutrients that promote plant growth to further hide the cocoon
After an undetermined amount of time, the cocoon gradually expands as the pupa grows into the adult form; the expansion leaves translucent areas where the silk is thin
Adult Vulture:
The engines and mask are a result of a mixture of bone-like material and metal-like material and are very hard to break
They are aware of how strong their own mask is so they stray from fighting each other, only ever attacking another vulture if they've lost their mask; this is an instinctive behavior both driven by their opportunistic nature and seeing a maskless vulture as sick or injured
As with the majority of creatures, the skin of a vulture is smooth and porous, but instead has patches of hair-like protrusions
Through a mysterious process, vultures are able to synthesize various chemicals to aid in flight, namely helium gas, which is pumped into the feathers
This process brings toxic byproducts: chlorine and iodine gas, which is forcefully expelled alongside the helium through the engines and out of the creature
A vulture's engines are raised occasionally to allow more airflow and a faster exchange of gas as standalone they accumulate these chemicals regardless of exertion
The feathers of a vulture are akin to swim bladders and are inflated with helium gas to allow the creature to fly, the feathers retain their flat shape but the skin is expanded and shows the true colors of the wings, when deflated the feathers are black in color
When on the ground, the feathers of a vulture are deflated and much tougher, their wings will curl into "fists" as they walk, occasionally extending their wings to grab ahold of things with their prolegs
Previously as a grub, they had 4 developed legs before they pupate, the mid legs turned into a pair of weak grabbing arms, mainly used to preen the creature
The grub's last pair of legs became fat reserves
The jaws of a vulture are pretty animal-like and only have a top and bottom jaw, they also have pedipalps which are used to preen, grab, and feel things
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
King Vulture:
Unknown as to how they originated, bear slightly different genetic coding compared to normal vultures, namely noticed with the mysterious brand on their masks
the vulture is larger to accommodate a second pair of lungs solely used to power the harpoon mechanism
The harpoon is shot via a swift expulsion of air similar to a sneeze, through the cables that they stiffen and expand, sending the harpoon flying at dangerous speeds
Relaxation of the cables allows them to slowly retract back on their own

Kanaya <3
This is the first troll we've seen who's not a newborn grub or thirteenish-year-old Player. I guess they pupate directly into a scaled-down version of their adult body.
Tumblr media
She looks barely larger than a grub, so it can't have been long since the trials, assuming the Sburb trolls did them at all. The comic has never elaborated on what these trials entail, but I think this is the first aspect of Homestuck's universe that I don't want a loredrop on.
GA: I Dont Mean Hes The Universe You Are From GA: We Engineered That Incarnation GA: He Is The Universe That You Are Trying To Create
Tumblr media
GA: That Statement Was As Literal As You Can Possibly Make Words Be GA: I Know Your Species Is Frequently Insincere For A Variety Of Reasons GG: but your species is too! […] GA: Thats True But When We Do It Its Usually Just Because We Are Trying To Be Jerks
And when you're trying not to be jerks, too. Alternia is just kind of.... like that.
GG: i try to say what i mean as much as i can GA: Yeah I Think Ive Been Discerning That GA: Its A Nice Change Of Pace […] GG: haha, you mean from rose?
Jade knows what the fuck is up. Maybe it's her turn to wingman for Rose.
GA: I Wont Be Speaking To Her Anymore Though GG: why? GG: oh yeah, because you said she is blacked out? GG: what the heck does that mean! GA: It Just Means In A Few Moments From Your Perspective I Wont Be Able To See Her Through My Viewport Or Talk To Her
Tumblr media
The blackout occurred while these two girls were in conversation, meaning Rose is about to message Jade right as it kicks in.
This message is obviously important - but what could it be? Is Rose trying to warn Jade about the circumstances that cause the blackout, in order to protect her from its effects?
GA: She Has Been Relying On The Powers And Counsel Of Dark Gods And Other Sources Of Ambiguous Intent GA: And She Has Consequently Devised A Plan Which Sounds Very Dangerous To Me GG: yeah, i didnt like the sound of her plan either! GA: You Are More Sensible GA: Its Probably The Influence Skaia Has Had On You GA: Having Spent Much Of Your Life Awake On Prospit GA: Like Me
We've talked before about what Dream Moon affinity really means for a Player. The theory I liked the most was that Prospit kids are predisposed to follow their fate, whereas Derse kids are inclined to defy their destiny.
This seems like more fuel for that fire, as Rose's acts of desperation and defiance clash with Jade's more levelheaded, 'sensible' attitude. rose, you're going to break something! :o

A Brief break from Goretober because I've been listening to a lot of MLP Creepypastas so I gotta make my OWN horror Horse.
His name is Perfect Pin; he's a monster, in his own way. He has a fascination with preserving and mounting specimens-as his ass tattoo has decreeded. But he's moved on from simply bugs and small animals. He's moved on to Pegasi because he thinks their biology is nifty and should be preserved for future viewing. His day job is a entomologist at a collage, managing their archives. It helps fund the rent on his very special house with it's very special gallery basement situation he has.
The Changling is his partner in crime. His name is Tarsus. Tarsus is one of the royal grubs from the previous Hive. Which means he emerged first, literally ate the competition and the second he pupated with legs he had the choice-fight the Alpha Queen or get the fuck out. The latter was chosen. He met Perfect Pin and they've had a nauseating symbiosis ever since. While Perfect Pin kidnaps people and begins the long process to preserve them and pin them to his gallery wall-Tarsus acts as the middle man, taking disguise of a 'poor victim like them who has to work under Perfect Pin and doesn't want to do this or else he'll get hurtings again' and then feeding off the essentially Stockholm feelings of people thinking he's one of them and worthy of trust and comradery. Then he goes up stairs, kicks back and watches 12 hours of trash T.V. after such a filling meal from a 20 minute interaction.
He is also Perfect Pin's literal partner. Are they gonna make a fucked up colony together? Maybe. Are they gonna keep sticking people on to a wall and preserving them like insane taxidermists? Absolutely. Will they get found out? Can't get caught if the cops can't find a body.

Being bred by a monster that’s like
Ovoviviparous
The eggs hatching inside and not being prepared for all those squirmy offspring!!
That's always fun!! I like laying eggs more, but have you considered when you lay eggs, n they hatch into grubs, and then they crawl back inside you to keep pupating...
