Fandom's Toxic Expectations

This fandom is straight up bizarre. You spend a year dissecting and drooling over a dude, but when he actually makes a few public appearances in a matter of days, some of y'all start whining about how he's not living up to your own delusional expectations. And mind you, this is from a group of supposedly mature adults (with an average age above 22, might I add) acting like socially inept teenagers.

Some of y'all are treating this grown 26-year-old man like a toddler, while the other half are playing detective and making up wild speculations about his personal life. He's only been in the public eye for a minute and the fandom has already squeezed every last drop out of him. Now he's everywhere and suddenly you want his introverted self back? Make up your minds, folks.

I'm not one to start drama, but I'm really tired of people hating on each other and doing things out of spite or jealousy or I don't know what. It's supposed to be a fun community. Lifting each other up. Clearly there are people who have their own things going on, and I'm sure they just want to get a rise out of the people they're doing it to.

There's a lot I could dive into here, but mainly: reporting someone's fic out of spite is cruel and you're a mean person who's going to have a hell of a talk with karma one day. If you're actually reporting it for the smut: why are you following the author if you're reporting all of their work? Why don't you turn on the community labels you clearly love so much so the words are blocked from your sight? Hell even send a message to the author and say : "Hey, I love your writing but I can't read the smut so unfortunately I won't be able to read this next one."

This is what leads me to believe it's all hate and spite fueled and guess what? You're winning. You're making people who spend months pouring their heart into something scared to pump up their fic and respond to kind messages. You're making them want to stop writing and leave.

You're a mean person, you just are. Congrats on winning. Hope you have the life you deserve. Maybe do some self reflection and therapy and find out why you're so mad at strangers on the internet in a silly little writing fandom. A fun hobby that pulls people out of whatever demons they're battling at home and brings them joy that you're ruining and taking away.

All I'm asking here is to think about some things:

- is doing this mean or spiteful thing really going to bring me joy? What do I get out of this? I'm having a bad day and now someone else in the world is too, cool?

- why am I so mad at them? If there's a real reason...have I talked to this person? Have I tried to work it out? Do I have some friends I could vent to about the situation before doing something mean? If it's jealousy or some other thing...maybe just talk to them? Maybe they're super cool and wanna talk about your writing with you. Maybe they feel the same way as you and they get jealous and sad and discouraged too.

- if I wanna keep being mad at this person, I wonder how my time could be used differently instead of sitting in hateful spite and taking the time to be cruel. I could eat a brownie. I could go for a walk or sit in the sunshine. I could look for new music. I could make someone smile today instead of cry.

To anyone out there who's feeling disheartened and wants to give up:

Please don't let someone's cruelty or hate ruin your spirits. There's people who want you here writing and don't go. 💛
