Giorno Noventasei: Roma Sycophants on velvet sofas, lavish mansions, vintage wine// Panic! At the Disco . . . Today started out bright and early as I boarded a train destined for Rome, and the friendly faces, and open arms of my grandparents. After a yummy colazione romana (Roman breakfast), Nanny directed us to the Mercato Monti where we got to walk around and enjoy the morning, after a quick lunch, we were off on a 3 hour tour of the Colosseum (aka the Flavius Arena), the Domus Aureus (Nero’s Golden Palace), and the Roman Forum. I was at first underwhelmed by the size of the colosseum... until I got close to it because WOW. The immensity of the building was incredible and our tour was so informative. Afterwards we got to see the archeological dig site of the Domus Aureus, which technically expands over 3 of the 7 Roman hills, or approximately 80 hectometers of land!! We only saw a small pavilion that made up less than 1% of the total palace, but even that was ENORMOUS. The archaeologists created a 360 VR recreation of what the building and gardens would have looked like at the height of Nero’s reign in the first century, and it was mind blowing. The scale of the entire complex is physically incomprehensible, but then add on to the fact that the entirety of the inside was either painted in fresco (which later inspired the Grotesqua style of the Renaissance painters who discovered the buried Domus) or covered in marble. This was truly an incredible stop on our tour. Finally we ended with a quick survey of the Roman Forum, and I got to see where Julius Caesar was cremated, and where Augustus built a temple to commemorate and deify him. Following all that walking (7 miles today!!) My grandparents took me to the most amazing restaurant for dinner where I had black truffle carbonara, and very... very rare steak (I powered through 😂). The night was topped off with the quintessential gelato and I can’t wait to have more adventures tomorrow! (at Rome, Italy)

Usar Google Street View para este ejercicio fue inesperadamente difícil, principalmente por lo que quería hacer. Fue difícil encontrar imágenes que me puedan servir, imágenes en la que se pueda ver un edificio completo, especialmente de buena calidad en algunos de los casos que creí estarían las mejores imágenes. Hubo un caso en el que quien fuera haya sido tomó la foto dejó su dedo en la lente, y asumo fue pasada sin revisar por una compañía tan grande como lo es Google.

Dejando todo esto detrás, me parece una herramienta interesante para la creación artística. Sinceramente jamás se me habría ocurrido realizar un ejercicio con Street View. Lo que me facilitó realizarlo fue la imagen mental de “Clarice”, de las “Ciudades Invisibles” por Italo Calvino (Las Ciudades y el Nombre 4), una ciudad que se destruye y reconstruye, me imagino edificios tras edificios a través de los años uno tras otro tras otro, algunos con su propósito reciclado, otros tan solo olvidados. Una ciudad sumida en el caos y la notoriedad, grotesqua y olvidada, pero al mismo tiempo bellamente única y constantemente innovadora.

In Los Angeles in early 2016, two queer club denizens put a party together at a strip-mall gay bar in deeply Latino eastern Los Angeles and called it Club Scum. Far from the posher dance floors of the gay enclave of West Hollywood, the goal of the organizers was to mix scenes that hadn’t often met, even on the widest of webs: drag and punk.
