Hariprasad Chaurasia, George Harrison, and Shivkumar Sharma, 1973; photographer unnamed, photo courtesy of hariprasadchaurasia dot com.
“George used to always say that if ever you are not feeling right, you should listen to Bob Dylan’s ‘Last Thoughts on Woody Guthrie’ and [Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shivkumar Sharma and Brij Bhushan Kabra’s] ‘Call of the Valley.’” - Olivia Harrison, The Hollywood Reporter, October 22, 2011 “‘Bhoop Ghara’ from Call of the Valley, recorded in 1967 by Shivkumar Sharma, Hariprasad Chaurasia and slide guitar player Brijbhusan Kabra, was ‘something George had on our juke box. We played it as a remedy in our home if you were feeling a certain way. Kabra was one of George’s heroes as a slide guitarist, up there with Ry Cooder,’ [Olivia explains].” - Songlines, June 2018 “[Ry Cooder] inspires me to try and play that [slide] better. At the same time, I’m into this Indian music and there’s a guy called Brijbushan Kabra who plays a guitar but he plays it like a lap steel, he lays it on his leg, and plays it with the slide on top, like, and restrung it and plays sort of groovy Indian stuff on it.” - George Harrison, Rockline, February 10, 1988 “[Hariprasad] Chaurasia’s face lights up as The Beatles guitarist and songwriter George Harrison’s name is mentioned. ‘We were very close friends, or, at least, that is what I believe. He used to come to India every year, especially to go to Vrindavan. And, whenever he came, he would come to my Bandra residence at times, with his then-girlfriend, Olivia. Every time we met, we used to play music together,’ says Chaurasia. [...] ‘One of the best musicians I ever met, George loved Indian music and had a deep understanding of it. He made an attempt to learn the sitar, and though he played it for himself, he did not want to play it in front of an audience,’ says Chaurasia. When asked what Harrison was like as an individual, the maestro was quick with his response: ‘George was a great human being. He treated everyone equally, irrespective of his or her race or nationality. I remember George would always remove his shoes or chappals before entering anyone’s house,’ he says. Harrison loved everything Indian — culture, traditions and food. 'So much so that he that he wanted to be born in India in his next life. He used to go to the Lord Krishna temple at Mathura, with his face covered with a shawl to avoid recognition. He enjoyed going to the temple alone and collecting prasadam. He loved listening to the dholak and the singing and dancing. His favorite place in India was Vrindavan and said that he could never find such an environment anywhere else in the world,’ says Chaurasia.” - The Week, February 17, 2018 (x)

fake number here: what kind of music do you like? any favorites you recommend?
Hi dear anon!
So I’ve recently gotten very into 80′s music, thank you Stranger Things, although I of course already know a lot of the songs due to it being what my dad listened to when I grew up!
But I listen to a very wide range of music, so I’ll give you a few recommendations!
I am deeply in love with the musical Chess in Concert, the version with Josh Groban and Idina Menzel, but the song titled “Endgame #3/Chess Game #3″ just... speaks to me in a whole different way than literally any other musical play I’ve heard, and I’ve gone through quite a few now haha
Juke Box Hero by Foreigner is also a song I have been listening to near non-stop lately, it just... moves me, pulls at my soul, like I feel it so fervently I cannot sit still!  And also I can very easily see one Billy Hargrove in it.
Vienna by Ben Platt, wonderful piano and his vocal chords are to die for, and the song itself; the lyrics they’re so... reassuring to me, “Vienna waits for you”? Like everything’s going to be ok in the end I know the song is originally by Billy Joel and has an actual backstory to it that is very fascinating in of itself
And lastly I’ll suggest to you A Place With No Name by Michael Jackson, purely because it’s groovy, like I can dance to this!! Not very well, mind you, but there are two critical parts to a song for me: How worthy it is to dance to, and how good it is to sing along to.
I have almost 800 songs on my favourites list, so if you’re looking for more, I’m right here!

∞∞∞∞∞∞ Do all of em!!!!!
Omg thank you stjktjksjjtl-
Now with commentary by me ✨ ✨
1. This Charming Man, The Smiths
Why pamper life's complexity When the leather runs smooth On the passenger's seat?
I love this song. I like a lot of the lyrics in it, but this one always catches my attention. I think it’s one of the hooks of the song, the way he accentuates “complexity” and “when the leather runs smooth”. It makes the sentence flow together.
2. Maneater, Hall & Oates
Watching and waiting Ooh, she's sitting with you but her eyes are on the door
I love this lyric because it’s one of those that you can see when you hear it; you get a mental image of a woman sitting with this guy, but she’s looking at the door; she’s not even acknowledging him.
3. Juke Box Hero, Foreigner
Like a trip through the past, to that day in the rain And that one guitar, made his whole life change
This song is about me, to some degree. I too started as a novice guitar player, getting my first own blazing red electric guitar, inspired by wanting to rock out like my favorite guitarists; Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Carlos Santana and even James Hetfield.
4. Loverboy, Adam Lambert
Show me that I'm the only one I don't wanna be another number Wanna feel like a loverboy
The chorus is so catchy. This part is so fun to sing along to; it’s really groovy and you feel kinda suave. ...Just me? Anyway, I love the old-school vibe that he put with his new album.
5. Ghost Town, Adam Lambert
Now, I'm searching for trust In a city of rust A city of vampires Tonight, Elvis is dead And everyone's spread And love is a satire
I like all the lyrics to this song. They’re really open to interpretation and the contrast between the melancholy guitar-strummed verse and techno-house chorus is a whole vibe.
6. After Midnight, Blink-182
It's the longest start, but the end is not too far away Did you know, I'm here to stay
Again, this is a song I love all the lyrics to. They’re so bittersweet, like a love story that you know has a sad ending, but you stick with it anyway because you’re in it for the sake of feeling; there’s still a hope that things will work out, like it’ll all come together in the end. That’s my view, anyway.
Hope you enjoy these ;u;

75 Dollar Bill — I Was Real (Thin Wrist)
Tumblr media
I Was Real by 75 Dollar Bill
75 Dollar Bill’s potent blend of juke-joint boogie, Sahel shredding, stern NYC minimalism, and experimental wonkery reached an apotheosis on Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/Rhythm/Rock, four slabs of art-school party jams that were as groovy, jagged, heavy, hard, soft, abrasive, smooth, austere and warm as sandstone. Their new LP, the sprawling I Was Real, doesn’t add anything to the sound they perfected on W/M/P/P/R/R. Rather, I Was Real deconstructs, re-examines and re-assembles it. It’s a career summary, victory lap and puzzle box from of one of America’s most interesting bands.
I Was Real’s biggest surprises are formal and structural, not sonic. Nearly every prior permutation of 75 Dollar Bill, from guitar/percussion duo to septet appears on I Was Real, and their studio-as-instrument experiments have become more refined. Captivating opener “Every Last Coffee or Tea,” (a wonderful full band re-recording of a track from their first cassette) segues into “C. OR. T.- Verso,” three minutes of scraping noise constructed from the “Every Last Coffee or Tea” intro. Another one: the suite of “I. New New II. The Worm III. Like Laundry,” where a slinky guitar/double bass number is swallowed up in its prime by a taut drone whose tonal center shifts imperceptibly over the course of four minutes before fading into the moody guitar/percussion duet “Like Laundry” (not to be confused with “Like Like Laundry,” another early piece). Best of these experiments is “WZN#3-Verso,” which consists of roiling, rumbling viola, violin, Casio, guitar, saxophone and bass recorded as overdubs for the closing track, “WZN#3” (another re-recording), but left to fend for themselves.
Here’s the best part about “WZN#3-Verso”: it’s a swelling wave, rolling thunder, one of I Was Real’s most exciting moments and you don’t need to know anything about its construction to enjoy it. All that stuff about overdubs and everything else in the last paragraph is for record nerds, Discogs ogres, formalists, and critics. Yes, 75 Dollar Bill makes music by and for music geeks, but at their best, as they often are on I Was Real, they also make thrillingly direct body music, rooted in tradition and totally far out, the sort of avant-democratic jive that Henry Flynt’s bands never quite nailed. You don’t need to show your underground credentials and identify who “Tetuzi Akiyama” is to get lost in its massive stomp, the blurring boundaries of the guitar and sax’s taffy-like timbres and the way they trade off melodic fragments, fulfilling James Brown’s apocryphal dictum, “Every instrument a drum!” Even the side long faux-raga of the title track is rhythmic and sly enough to, like all good meditations, engage body and brain in equal measure. Truly weird, but never experimental for its own sake, I Was Real is just accessible enough that Bo Diddley, RL Burnside, Chen’s one time tutor Jeiche Ould Chigaly, and your world music/blues loving parents might grudgingly dig it.
At 69 minutes, I Was Real is a lot to take in. Newcomers are advised to start with W/M/P/P/R/R, the concise, big band counterpart to I Was Real’s occasionally meandering chamber music. Still, I Was Real is sure to puzzle and please whether your devotion to rock and roll and its antecedents is intellectual or physical. Sure, all of that stuff about Mauritanian modes, compound rhythms, and microtones is interesting, but when “Every Last Coffee or Tea” levitates you, all that matters is the music: strange, familiar, stark, funky and new under the sun.

Modern Times Rock 'N' Roll
Tumblr media
Had to make do with a worn out rock and roll scene The old bop is gettin’ tired need a rest Well you know what I mean Fifty eight that was great But it’s over now and That’s all Somethin’ harder’s coming up Gonna really knock a hole in the wall Gonna hit ya grab you hard Make you feel ten feet tall
Well I hope this baby’s gonna come along soon You don’t know it could happen any ol’ rainy afternoon With the temperature down And the juke box blowin’ no fuse And my musical life’s feelin Like a long Sunday School cruise And you know there’s one thing Every single body could use Yeah listen to me baby Let me tell you what it’s all about Modern times rock and roll Modern times rock and roll
Get you high heeled guitar boots and some groovy clothes Get a hair piece on your chest And a ring through your nose Find a nice little man who says He’s gonna make you a real big star Stars in your eyes and ants in your pants Think you should go far Everybody in this bum sucking world Gonna know just who you are Look out
Modern times rock and roll

I Love Memphis gets weird today thanks to contributor Stacey – who searched across the city for the most interesting restrooms in all the land – ranging from funky to fancy. Guess where you’ll find each restroom and then scroll to the bottom for the answers.  I did my best to not include any images that had obvious vulgarity, but keep in mind this post may require some appreciation of bathroom humor or tolerance for a scribbled swear. These bathrooms are a mix of women’s/men’s/unisex but there are enough hints it shouldn’t be too biased no matter which room you use. 1. Groovy This dive bar is known for its art, so it only makes sense that the women’s room would also be a work of art. (Not sure why such attention to detail did not carry out in the men’s room. Maybe the artist got tired?) However, this psychedelic landscape could prove problematic depending on how much one has been drinking. 2. Argggh Once upon a time, this bar’s ladies’ room had a lovely poster of Audrey Hepburn facing the porcelain throne. Now, there’s a rheumy-eyed pirate creepily staring at you. 3. Welcome to The Funhouse this is truly the weirdest bathroom in Memphis These legendary funhouse bathrooms – both men’s and women’s – have survived various incarnations of this restaurant space. No one knows if this M.C. Escher inspired tiled masterpiece was created on purpose or by necessity, but those prone to vertigo may want to steer clear. 4. What Is Even Happening Two toilets facing each other in the ladies’ room. How is this a thing? 5. Yikes Once home to a solid group of old timers, this much loved dive bar has been reclaimed by the young and hip.  Here you’ll find a great juke box, a pretty messed up but playable pool table, and one of the most notorious bathrooms in all of Memphis. Fellas, too many beers affecting your ability to direct the stream to its intended target? No worries, what happens on the floor here, stays on the floor here. (Hey, things could be worse, it could be carpeted!) 6. He Said It The bathrooms at this late night stop are among the cleanest in town, believe it or not. While the women’s room is rather boring, save for a little political graffiti, the men’s room is a shrine to a former employee. Apparently, he was known for his witticisms. A long time regular tells me that the list that covers all four walls was a work in progress for many years while he was still alive and slinging hot wings. 7. What Wondrous Graffiti Home to artists, poets, and comics, this bar’s bathrooms were once a place of inspiration thanks to the literary thoughts scrawled on the walls. These days, the women’s room contains campy drawings of both male and female nether regions, and the drunken scribble centers on calling out men for their bad behavior. If the complicated and time consuming graffiti in the men’s room is any indication, many men have sought refuge there. 8. Hello Beautiful Clearly a woman (or a very smart man) added this little touch to the ladies’ room at this newish downtown watering hole. It’s guaranteed to bring a smile and has probably resulted in a quite a few women inadvertently striking up a conversation with a brick wall. 9. Ladies lounge This is the best kept secret on this famous street, at least for the ladies in need of a clean place to take a pitstop. Come up the fire escape and walk right in, whether you plan to dine or not. (Shhh!) This bathroom could easily be mistaken for a swanky cocktail bar thanks to its luxurious seating area and romantic lighting. Speaking of if walls could talk…I imagine quite a bit of gossip and shenanigans have gone on in here. 10. Refurbished One of midtown’s fine dining establishments is undergoing a total refresh, and that includes the bathrooms. This recently redone ladies’ room has handmade wallpaper and a nice little side table for your purse and phone. 11. Shiny and New Looking for a classy place to leave that oak barrel-aged overflow? These bathrooms are super brand-new and so shiny. It appears they’ve taken the same care in designing the restrooms as they have the rest of the facility. 12. Artsy Technically not a bar, but you can get a free drink here one Friday a month. Two unisex bathrooms serve as private galleries of sorts as they feature fine art by two of this establishment’s “regulars.”  Tad Lauritzen Wright’s most recent show, “The Politics of Power,” which consisted of single line drawings, extends into one bathroom. (Greely Myatt’s work, which includes a zipper in the wall, graces the other.) Answers 1. Canvas 2. The Cove 3. Midtown Crossing 4. Westy’s 5. Lamplighter 6. Alex’s Tavern Former employee Sonny was known for his witticisms (aka “Sonnyisms”). 7. P&H 8. The Dirty Crow 9. Itta Bena on Beale Street 10. Tsunami (Part-owner and artist Colleen Couch Smith did the redesigning, which includes freaking handmade wall paper!) 11. Old Dominick Distillery 12. David Lusk Gallery Have more quiz ideas for Memphis? More weird bathrooms? Leave em in the comments. !!!

New Sensation plays INXS > Deux Ours
