What the Grocery Industry Will Look Like in 2023 | Digital Grocer S5E6
The grocery retail industry is ever-changing, and the next few years will bring even more changes. By 2023, grocery stores will look very different than they do today. For one thing, they will be much more focused on delivery and online ordering. In-store pickup will also become more popular, as customers continue to value convenience. In addition, grocery stores will increasingly cater to specific dietary needs, such as gluten-free and vegan options. They will also offer more prepared foods and grab-and-go meals. As the grocery industry evolves, stores will need to adapt to survive. Those that embrace change will be well-positioned for success in the coming years.
Click on the below podcast link for more information:
In this episode of Digital Grocer, hosts Sylvain Perrier and Mark Fairhurst are joined by Claire Fan, an Economist from the office of the CEO of Royal Bank of Canada. The three discuss the Canadian and U.S. economy and how current events are affecting grocery consumers, as well as what is happening from a geo-political perspective and how that will impact the economy and grocers in general.
Some of the topics covered include the current macro state and trends with the Canadian and U.S. economy, how inflation is surging globally and what that means for grocers, how consumers are responding to the economic situation and the impact on consumer spending, strategies that grocery retailers are implementing to combat inflation and economic challenges.
The grocery retail industry is facing unprecedented challenges due to the current economic conditions. Inflation is rising at a rapid pace globally, which is putting pressure on grocery retailers who are struggling to keep up with rising costs while also trying to maintain margin levels. Consumers are also responding to the economic situation by becoming more mindful of their spending habits. This is having an impact on grocery retailers who are now implementing strategies to combat these challenges. Some of these strategies include price increases, cost-cutting measures, and promotions or sales to drive traffic into stores.

CART Weekly Report 7/26/18
Tumblr media
Want to discover the next big thing in tech? Then stop saying 'no' to everything |ZDNet
Tumblr media
CART’s Take: If I had to identify one thing that I think represents the biggest threat to traditional retailers in the days ahead it is this: Brick & mortar retailers are moving much too slowly with regard to innovation. In discussions I’ve had with Citibank analysts covering the supermarket industry, there is clear consensus that a radical restructuring of the industry is underway and the supermarket vertical is going to look very different within the next 5 years.
This is not just about the growth of eCommerce. This is about the radical transformation of how food is produced, sold, and consumed; think Local Roots growing produce in a storage container in the parking lot, prepared foods (restaurant) delivered to home and office, and personalized nutrition arising from 3D printed food. And those are just to name a few of the things happening.
Traditional retailers should be focused on 3 things:
Gaining and maintaining awareness of new capabilities and innovation flowing into supermarket retail
Constant testing and piloting of new capabilities
Implementation of new innovation
CART is here to help. For larger companies CART can organize an Innovation Day held at the retailer’s HQ to help the executive team gain awareness of new solutions and capabilities coming into the market and facilitate collaboration and partnerships. Inside FreshDirect’s Big Bet to Win the Home-Delivery Fight | WSJ
Tumblr media
CART’s Take: FreshDirect has helped grow grocery eCommerce since launching in 2002. It has invested in a 400,000 square foot facility designed to move fresh foods quickly through the operation from receiving to the end customer. FreshDirect services customers in the NY/NJ, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC markets.
FreshDirect’s nearly $200 million investment in the facility is representative of the massive bets being placed on eCommerce growth over the next few years. Kroger’s recent deals with Ocado for automated distribution facilities and Nuro for self-driving automated delivery vehicles are another sign. Things are moving very fast.
Amazon Dominates Online Grocery Share: Report | Winsight Grocery Business
Tumblr media
CART’s Take: A new study put out by One Click Retail states that Amazon has captured 18% of online grocery sales since 2017, making it the largest share of any single retailer and double that of Walmart, its closest competitor. As grocery eComm continues to grow fast the focus is already on efficient operations to help attain profitability as soon as possible. The next front is going to be on delivery as Amazon focuses on 1-2 hour delivery in a growing number of markets, forcing competitors to try and keep pace.

Everything You Need to Know About Grocery E-Commerce 2020
There has been a rapid shift to online shopping since the coronavirus pandemic. The combination of customers avoiding public places and government rules to stay at home has resulted in people shopping for groceries and essential goods online. Thus, online grocery delivery services like Howmuch have come to the fore. Managing online orders is a hard task and therefore, grocery store POS software has also become a hot commodity these days.
Previously, many stores could manage online orders without software assisting them but now, the landscape of shopping has completely changed. The consumers that once resisted online shopping because they wanted to pick their groceries themselves and avoid paying extra delivery fees have had a change in their priorities and are shopping online to protect themselves and those that they love. As a result, there is a tough competition between grocers and how well they meet their customer demand is going to be the top factor that decides the top online grocer.
Tumblr media
Here is all that you need to know about online grocery shopping:
Online Grocery Shopping Spans Generations:
It’s a common misconception that only millennials are the ones that shop online. For food, groceries or any other item. The truth is that people from 3 generations are now involved in shopping online. Millennials have the biggest portion of online shoppers but Gen X and Baby Boomers have also embraced the trend of shopping online a  lot in the past few years. Just look at the stats of online grocery shopping conducted by Gen X from 2017 to 2019; it grew from 24% to 40%! For baby boomers, it was from 12% to 18%. Given the current circumstances, it sure has only increased.
Personalised Product Suggestions:
For years, the plight of online shopping for retailers was that online grocery shopping lacks the same opportunities for the discovery of products that shoppers have when they walk from aisle to aisle in a brick and mortar store.
But now, POS software and other marketing tools like Facebook pixels help in determining shoppers' interest and offer suggestions accordingly. Algorithms are designed to show shoppers the other items that could be of their interest. And according to several studies, more than half of the online shoppers tend to view the details of the suggested items.
Big Grocery Companies are Dominating:
Globally famous companies like Amazon are dominating the retail industry as they continue to build their products. They rely on in-house technology to help with their online orders and sales. But local grocers lack the capital to build their own digital solution and thus, partner with tech companies and service providers to provide their customers with a delightful shopping experience
Not All Sectors Are Equal:
Online grocery market in aggregate gives us useful insights but when investigated in detail, you’ll find that not all grocery sectors are equal. The most popular products purchased by consumers are staple pantry products. Canned goods are second on the list and this is especially good for grocers as transportation of these items is really easy. Spices come the third on the list and so on.
Basket Sizes of Different Channels are Different:
The average basket size of a customer buying physically and a customer purchasing his goods online is pretty different. People who buy online roughly spend 30% more money than the ones who buy by physically going to a store. Retailers need to keep this in mind as they invest in campaigns for their online sales and presence. A good reason why people tend to spend more money shopping online is that they feel compelled to shop until they are eligible to avail free delivery service.
