Also can we stop framing "the fight for our rights" (regardless of who "we" may be) as an object of the mythicized Community History? WE are Literally Fighting For Our Rights NOW, lgbt history did not end with Stonewall or in the 70s/80s/90s or with the legalization of gay marriage, in the same way Puerto Rican history did not end with the Grito de Lares or with Luis Muñoz Marin or with the Young Lords. You cannot look at the way people are being treated in this country right now and continue to insist that "the fight for our rights" was all in the past and "the people who fought for our rights" is a solidified, non-dynamic category. I want everyone to stop their performative Gen Z self-hatred and Totally Leftist worship of the cult of (#queer) tradition and be serious for once. What good is "these are the people who literally FOUGHT for your RIGHTS you ingrate" when those "rights" are constantly in threat of being taken away? People are fighting NOW, young people, people who were never in a vintage zine to post on your epic queer history blogs. History is not "all the important stuff happened Back Then, and now we have rights so all the stupid stuff is happening now". History is happening always. "The fight" is happening always

After the 1898 Spanish-American War, Puerto Rico became a U.S. possession as an unincorporated organized territory. Soon after, the Foraker Act allowed some measure of civilian popular government. The 1917 Jones-Shafroth Act granted citizenship to Puerto Ricans born after 1898.
The 2012 referendum posed three alternatives: statehood, independence, or free association. Almost two-thirds voted for statehood, a decision that was confirmed by the 2020 referendum.
