>>>————————————->
London, Wednesday
Harry smiles as he shuffles around the house, throwing things in his suitcase.
“Hey Harry, don’t pack your puffer-.”
“Y/N, you said it was gonna be cold and that I should expect snow!”
“Yes but- your puffer is cotton. Which can catch on fire. And we’ll be operating a propane burner. And don’t pack your wool gloves either-. You know what, finish packing your clothes and then we’ll go get you everything else. I need new gloves anyways.”
He rolls his eyes and kisses my forehead before turning back to our dresser.
This year, Harry is joining me for a hot air balloon rally that I crew for with some of my family every year. I have never seen him more excited for something so boring.
After he finishes, he drags me out the door immediately and we head down to the shops.
“We need to go to Workwear. They should have everything.”
He nods and grips my hand as we walk down the chilly streets. Harry grabs the door and we head inside. Harry bites his lip, a bit reluctant at his unfamiliar atmosphere.
“Come on, dork. Let’s go find you a jacket.”
I manage to find a nylon and polyester jacket that he’s satisfied with, though he complains that he’d rather his puffer.
“I know- you can pack it but you can’t wear it when we’re crewing or Bob will never let us hear the end of it.”
I grab a few pairs of nylon gloves before dragging him over to the shoes.
“Boots, love? Really?”
I snort and nod my head.
“We’re carrying heavy equipment. Your Vans won’t work. You could drop something and seriously hurt your foot. Hence the steel-toed boots. And they’ll keep you warm. Trust me.”
He nods and we head to the checkout, excitement rushing through us at our week ahead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday
As soon as we land in Albuquerque, we quickly pick up our bags and our rental car before getting on the road. We get settled on the highway and Harry turns on cruise control, taking my hand in his while driving with the other. My hands start to shake more and I sigh.
“You’re shaking Y/N. Why are you shaking?”
I let out another sigh and I look at him.
“My father might be there… And my brother and sister. You haven’t met them… And honestly I don’t really talk to them. So I guess I’m just nervous. And you’ve never met my granny or her husband- And since you’re helping crew for Andrew… I don’t know… Just a lot going on.”
He lifts my hand up and kisses the back of it before he squeezes it. His eyes remain on the road but his words make me tear up.
“I know you’re not particularly looking forward to all of that- But I’m here. I’m always here. And your mum. You know she won’t let him do anything to you. I will be the perfect Angel that I always am-.”
I snort and he gives me a playful side eye.
“As I was saying- everything will be just fine. Okay? So let’s have fun. I’m definitely excited. And happy to see your mum again.”
He smiles and squeezes my hand again before turning his attention back to the road. After about 2 hours, Harry gets off at the exit and it only takes us a minute to get to our hotel. He parks next to my mom’s car and we get out. She gets out of her car and rushes over to Harry, pulling him into a hug as he laughs and smiles.
“Oh my god, Harry! I’ve missed you! Look at you! You look great!”
He laughs and hugs my mom back for a minute before they pull away.
“I’m great, Kelly. How are you?”
She nods and gives him a smile before she pulls me into a hug as well.
“Hi my babies.”
I smile and hug her, rolling my eyes at Harry as he laughs.
“Hi mama.”
She pulls away and shoves her hands in her pockets.
“You both doing okay? Taking care of each other? You look good but you know I worry.”
I smile and nod.
“We’re fine. Harry is very excited.”
Harry nods and wraps an arm around my waist, his smile clear as day. We stand by the car, talking to my mom for a few minutes when my grandmother pulls up. Her husband gets out of the truck and gets her walker out, setting it up as she gets out. Not ready to face her, I drag Harry inside to check in and get our room keys.
We collect our keys and walk up the stairs to our room.
“Love, I really don’t think you need to avoid her-.”
“You know how frustrating she is! The woman flat out told me when I was 16 that it was my fault that my mother was depressed! Because somehow I could control who she slept with to create me!”
He wraps his arms around me and kisses my head.
“I know love, I know. But you know your mum won’t let her do anything. Did you pack your meds?”
I huff and just shrug. He holds me for a minute, rubbing my back before he decides we need to go downstairs and get our bags. He drags me down the stairs and out to the car where, surprise surprise, my grandmother is. I elect to ignore her, opening the back to start grabbing bags. My mom pulls us over to them as I huff in frustration.
“Mom, this is Harry, Y/N’s boyfriend. Harry, this is my mom, May and her husband Andrew. You’ll meet Bob later. He’ll be crewing with us.”
Harry shakes my granny’s hand as well as Andrew’s when my grandmother adverts her gaze to me.
“Sweetie, what did I say about all that eating you do? It’s not good for your figure. I mean look at you-. And did you get that job I sent you the link to?”
I sigh and shake my head, squeezing Harry’s hand to calm me down before answering her.
“Granny, that job was in Arizona. I live in London, remember? And I have a job. I work at a publishing firm, remember? And I like it.”
Before she can say respond, Andrew interrupts her.
“How about we all get settled in our rooms? We’ll meet back here in the parking lot at 6:30 to go check in?”
We all nod and head inside. Before we enter our room, my mom puts her hand on my shoulder, and I turn to face her.
“You two go ahead and have to time with each other for the night. We don’t all need to go to check in and I know you’re not exactly ready to see him. I’ll text you what time we need to meet in the morning.”
Harry smiles and hugs my mom and I let out a heavy sigh.
“Thank you, Kelly. I’ll take care of our girl. She’ll be fine.”
My mom kisses my forehead and squeezes my shoulder before she heads into her room and disappears behind the door. Harry pulls me into our room and pulls me into a tight hug as soon as the door closes. He rubs my back and I let out a sigh.
“How about we go on a walk after we get settled in love? Think that would help? Or are you in the stuff your face with sweets until you pass out kind of mood?”
I shake my head as I hang up my jacket.
“I’m actually in the take a hot shower and then cuddle with my hot boyfriend until I fall asleep kind of mood.”
Harry flashes me a bright smile and hugs me as he hangs up his jacket.
“You take your shower. I’ll run to the vending machines and get some sweets. When you’re done, we can head to bed.”
He kisses my forehead and leaves the room. I grab some sweats and a soft top before heading into the shower.
By the time I’m done, my hair in a wet braid and teeth brushed as I walk out in my soft clothes, Harry is already in bed, scrolling on his phone. He looks up and smiles, pecking my lips softly when I get into bed.
“Your sweets are in the fridge, let me brush my teeth and I’ll turn the light out.”
I nod and curl up into bed as I wait for him. Not 5 minutes, he’s back in bed, pulling me close before he turns out the light.
“Are you gonna be okay, love? You’ve been tense since we got here.”
I sigh and bury my head in his chest.
“I’m nervous… And honestly I haven’t been feeling that well lately so maybe that’s just not helping. And with the stress of seeing him, and of course my granny, I guess I’ve just been a little off. But I’m really glad you’re here… I’m excited for you to meet my sister. She’s a-.”
“A pain in the ass, you’ve mentioned.”
“But you’ll like her! We fought a lot when we were kids of course but we got closer in high school. You’ll love her!”
He laughs and squeezes me tight.
“I could never love anyone as much as I love you. But I’m sure she’s great. Just keep thinking of all the positives, remember? You love this town, you love this time of year, don’t let them take that excitement from you. And I am very excited to experience this with you. Now let’s get some sleep, okay?”
I smile and curl up into his arms before slowly falling asleep.
Friday 05:30
So put your best face on everybody
Pretend you know this song everybody
Come hang (Come hang)
Let's go out with a bang!
Bang! Bang! Bang!-
I wake up to my alarm going off as I feel butterfly kisses on my cheeks. I wake up to see Harry, planting soft kisses all over my face before he smiles when he sees I’m awake.
“Time to get up, love. We have to be downstairs in 30 minutes.”
I groan and wrap my arms around his neck as I sigh.
“Can you just tell them I died or something? Or better yet we both did? I don’t want to go into the cold… I wanna stay here and cuddle.”
He laughs and shakes his head, pecking my lips before he pulls me up.
“Well, your mum is bringing coffee in like 10 minutes so you have to be alive if you want some of that. Because I do.”
I laugh and shake my head as I get up from the bed, pulling clothes out of my bag before I start to change. Harry and I are quickly dressed by the time my mom knocks on the door and Harry happily accepts the coffee.
The second I smell it, I get nauseous and I run to the toilet, throwing up. I hear Harry sigh and he comes into the bathroom, throwing my hair up in a clip before he starts to rub my back. I throw up a few minutes before I flush, slowly standing up so I can rinse and brush my teeth.
From the corner of my eye, I see my mom with a worried expression on her face.
“How long has that been going on, Y/N/N?”
I shrug and wipe my mouth, turning out the bathroom light before fixing my hair quickly.
“A couple weeks I guess. I’m never running a temp so I figured they were just random waves of nausea.”
She sighs and shakes her head.
“I think you should take a test.”
My eyes widen and I look at her.
“You think I could be-.”
Harry and I share a look, one filled with anxiety.
My mom only nods and rubs my back in comfort.
“When we come back after breakfast, I’ll go get you a few tests and you can take them and we’ll go from there, okay? Just try not to stress about it.”
We only nod and she leaves only a minute after. Harry lays back down and holds his arms open to me and I immediately lay in his arms, holding back tears.
“What are we-.”
“Shhh. Everything will be just fine, love. No matter what. If you’re pregnant, we’ll handle it. And if not… maybe it’s just not the right time. Either way, I’m not going anywhere. We will figure this out. Together.”
He kisses my head and rubs my back as we lay there for a few more minutes before we finally head out to the parking lot. We all hop into the van, the vehicle filled with silence as we make the small journey to the lift off field. After about 10 minutes, Andrew parks the van and gets out, meeting Bob outside so the can attend the pilot’s meeting. Harry squeezes my hand and gives me an anxious look.
“So… we just wait? I thought we would all be getting out and that’s when the hard work starts.”
My mom and I laugh and I shake my head before I peck his cheek.
“No, there’s always. Just a little waiting. They have about a 30 minute pilot meeting to determine whether or not we can fly. Based on the wind, I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Right now, if we flew, we’d flop around and lose control.”
He laughs and nods. As expected, when they come back from the meeting, we aren’t able to fly. Andrew makes the decision to head to breakfast rather than still inflating like most were doing, even though we couldn’t fly. We pull into the parking lot of an almost empty diner and finally get out of the van. We eat breakfast, Harry and I sharing a plate since I really wasn’t in the mood to eat much.
The minute we get back to the hotel, my mom runs to her car and takes off, no doubt to go buy me tests. After about 20 minutes, she comes back with a knock on our door. She hands me the bag and I let out a shaky sigh.
“I’m sure you know how to use these… I’ll give you two some space. Call me if you need me sweet girl.”
She kisses my forehead and squeezes Harry’s shoulder before leaving the room. We’re quiet for a few minutes before Harry sits next to me on the bed, taking my hand in his, squeezing it before he raises our joint hands to his lips, softly kissing the back of my hand.
“I meant what I said, Y/N. No matter what the results are… we’re gonna be okay.”
I sigh and start to tear up.
“Are we even ready for this-.”
He sighs and puts a finger on my lips, silencing me.
“We’ll figure it out love. Just like we have with everything else. Alright? Now go take those tests. We can cuddle when you finish and we’ll wait for the results.”
I sigh and stand up, taking the tests into the bathroom. I take all 4 and place them on the counter, letting out a shaky sigh. I wash my hands and take a quiet minute to myself before opening the door and flinging myself on the bed and into Harry’s arms, causing him to laugh. Harry sets a timer on his phone before he puts it back on the nightstand and cuddles close to me, kissing my head.
“Are you hoping for certain results…?”
Harry is quiet for a minute before he turns to me with a small smile.
“Well… If you are pregnant… I would be extremely happy. I mean we’ve been together for 3 years and we live together. And besides… I want a little you… I’ve thought about it on and off… And maybe that can happen now. If you’re not… I don’t know… Maybe it’s something we could talk about? I mean… obviously I’m not getting younger despite how hot and young the girl next to me is…”
I laugh and nudge him playfully as he laughs and hugs me. He pecks little kisses all over my face before he starts to tickle me. He towers over me, determined to tickle more, but is interrupted by the timer on his phone going off. My face pales and we both sit up. He turns off the timer and we sit quietly for a minute before Harry speaks up.
“We’ll do it together…”
He takes my hand and pulls me up before he walks to the bathroom. We share a look and nod in agreement before looking at the tests. Positive. All positive. I turn to him, tears in my eyes, as are his as he quickly pulls me into his arms and hold me tight. After a minute, he pulls away and kisses me passionately as he holds me close. When we pull away for air, we share a small laugh and he hugs me once again.
“God I just- We’re having a baby! I love you! We need to call mum! And Gem! We need-!”
I laugh and shake my head.
“Let’s try to find some onesies here… Maybe we can surprise them. But we should go tell my mom since- of course she knows and she’s probably dying to know.”
He laughs and nods. We leave our hotel room and head over to my mom’s room, softly knocking on the door. She opens it and immediately lets us in.
“We’ll…?!”
We laugh and she glares at me.
“Okay okay… I’m pregnant. We’re having a baby.”
She tears up and hugs the both of us tightly.
“I’m gonna be a grandma again!!!”
I shush her and put my finger on her lips to shut her up.
“Hush! There’s people here we don’t want knowing!”
She nods and I remove my finger. Her phone pings and she picks it up, reading it before she looks up at us.
“Your grandmother wants to go shopping and Andrew wants to know if you guys are going to dinner tonight.”
Harry and I share a look and I sigh, falling back into his arms with a groan.
“Tell them we’re still jet lagged. I don’t want to deal with her tonight.”
She laughs and nods, hugging the both of us before she leaves our room. For the rest of the night, we cuddle and talk a little about the baby until I finally fall asleep, drifting into my dreams of hoping for a bright beginning.
And in the back of my head, I knew that this weekend was going to be a whirlwind.
Cliffside
“Maybe this vacation would do me good.”
Scout thought out loud as he started the long drive around the mountain.
Had his team really wanted him to take a break? Or did they just want to get rid of him? After all, a man’s friends don’t buy him tickets and pay for his lodging in Maui, Hawaii out of the kindness of their hearts.
“Well, might as well make the best of it.”
As he drove on the gently sloping road, he thought about the things to do on this drive. He would skip that little town with that big old tree in it. He had seen a bunch of big trees on that road to Hana and on that hike up to Waimoku falls. He would also skip those Alluvione pools because he swam in those Seven Sacreds. But he had heard that the views from the West Maui mountain were beautiful and he really wanted to see that blowhole that was somewhere along the way. Not to mention a little bay that was said to have the most beautiful snorkeling that you could do for free. Heck, he even bought snorkeling equipment for it!
He figured he would go into the valley after rounding out the mountain and see the Iao Needle. Especially since he heard an especially gorey story about the place.
He glanced back at the bag in the backseat of the rental car. In it was a camera, a change of clothes, his snorkeling equipment, and his satellite phone.
Just in case.
Scout had a great day. The snorkeling was amazing, and there was the most beautiful forest on the walk to the bay.
The blowhole was really cool, spraying him a few times and having a multitude of crabs to photograph.
He ended up going to the Alluvione pools, due to their reputation. It was a really fun rock climb down and there was another blowhole! The pools were beautiful, teeming with life and picturesque in every way. After the rough climb on the sharp volcanic rock, it was nice to relax in the lukewarm water.
Once Scout had returned to his car, he sighed a content sight. He was tired, but very happy as well.
Now, all he had to do was drive back to the hotel.
He began to drive away from the pools. The road quickly narrowed, but he was sure that he could keep the car under control.
He immediately noticed that there was no guardrail.
He gulped when he saw the sheer drop down.
And his mind spun as he looked upon the winding road before him.
Hairpin turns, switchbacks, waves, ones that seemed to go at a 90 degree angle!
They all stretched out before him.
The longer he drove on this nightmare road, the more anxious he became.
Finally, he came to a little village in the valley that the road went right through. It was like a sigh of relief.
Scout pulled off into the small parking lot of a little banana bread bakery to gather his bearings.
Due to the mile markers, knew he only had 12 more miles to go, but the map showed a nightmare tangle of turns and cliffsides. Scout swallowed hard.
12 more miles and he would be safe.
Scout was temped to just stay in the town for longer, but he knew that the sun would be setting soon and did not want to brave that road at night. So, he stood, waved goodbye to the bakery owner, got back into his car, and started back up the mountainside.
The road was even worse now.
The turns were sharper.
The drop offs were taller.
A sheer cliffs of rock both rose from his right side and fell away from his left.
He swallowed the lump of fear in his throat, gripping the wheel so hard his knuckles turned white.
He accelerated to get up a hill, then pressed the brakes to slow down again.
Nothing happened.
A string of swears flew from Scout’s mouth  as his car rolled toward the edge of the cliff.
Fortunately, the slope of the hill had slowed him down, and he successfully turned around the bend.
The road sloped down.
The car gained more and more speed as Scout flew around the valley corner.
Then, he was headed back to the edge of the cliff. The road only continued to slope down.
Scout drifted around the next turn, just barely making it.
A wall of rocks rose from the narrow road on his right. A sheer drop into the forested valley fell away from him on the left. There was nowhere to go.
Scout drifted around the next turn, thinking he could make it again.
He was not so lucky.
His back tires went over the edge.
Scout had just enough time to clip on his seatbelt before the car tipped and slid off of the road.
Scout’s body floated as the car free fell through the air. Was he upside down? Or just falling fast? He couldn’t tell.
The car impacted the slope at the bottom of the cliff.
The roof of the car crunched as it hit the rocky slope, Scout’s body jerking against his seatbelt. The windows cracked and shattered under the weight of the car and the force of the inertia. His chest felt like it had been crushed like an aluminum can.
The car flipped over, doing a barrel roll that slammed him into every surface of the car he could think of.
The car hit the rocky soil again, upside down. This time, it simply slid to a stop at the bottom.
Scout hung against his seatbelt, wheezing.
Air.
He needed air.
He fumbled with the seatbelt, but the buckle assembly was crushed.
He wheezed again and fumbled for his pocket knife that always remained in his side pocket. It wasn’t there. Scout glanced in front of him.
The knife lay above him, folded. It must have slid out of his pocket on that roll.
He reached up, his arm crying out in pain as he stretched for his knife. His fingers grazed it, but he couldn’t reach.
He deflated his chest to cross the last inch he needed. It hurt. It hurt so bad. But his fingers closed around the knife.
He quickly flipped the blade open, working the sharp metal as a saw.
Finally, belt snapped, and a moment later he fell to the glass and rock-littered roof
He didn’t notice the glass slicing up his hands and tearing through his jeans.
All he could feel was the terrible pain in his chest.
His runner’s lungs worked as hard as they had ever worked in any battle, gathering oxygen and pushing his chest out.
It hurt.
It really hurt.
Scout lay in the sharp glass and stones, coughing and gasping for air. As he tasted the blood in his throat, one thought crossed his mind.
He had to get the satellite phone.
Scout flipped over and crawled to the backseat, looking for his bag in the carnage.
It wasn’t there.
He checked under the seats and all over the car, wheezing and coughing the whole time.
His bag was gone. How was it gone?
It only took one glance out of the shattered back windshield to tell him where his bag had ended up.
Near the top of the steep incline, his items lay strewn out on the rocks
An anguished whimper escaped Scout’s lips as his eyes sized up the steep slope. Could he even make it? Would his lungs explode before he got there? It sure felt like it.
But he had to try.
Climbing out of the demolished car, Scout felt an ocean spray on his face. The valley he was in would have been beautiful if it hadn’t nearly killed him.
“You could still die.” Scout reminded himself and he suddenly became aware of his wheezing again.
As he stood, leaning against the car, he realized that it wasn’t just his chest that ached.
His left knee looked….off, and a large bruise was starting to form on his right shin. Scout mulled over what could have caused those injuries for a moment before he came to a conclusion.
“The dashboard….” He whispered to himself.
A steady pounding in the back of his head reminded him that his life may be at stake here. No time to dilly dally.
As he started his ascent up the hill, every injury on his body protested.
But he persisted.
He had to make it.
As he climbed, the pounding in his head got worse, drowning out the pain in his legs and chest.
Why was his head getting worse? Was that sweat or blood? Where….where was he?
For a moment, Scout was disoriented, his mind being unable to comprehend where he was for a few moments.
Then, awareness trickled back into his mind and he recalled his awful situation. He then continued his ascent.
Suddenly, he was in front of his bag.
What? When had he gotten so close? How far had he climbed?
He looked behind him, his head spinning even more as his brain took in the height of the slope he was on.
He turned back to the rocks in front of him, feeling nauseous. Then, he grabbed the phone.
“911, what’s your emergency?”
What? When had he dialed? He shoved those thoughts aside.
“Y-yes, uh, I was d-driving around….West Maui….and….”
What had happened to him, again? He glanced down at the wrecked car and remembered.
“I went over the edge….over the cliff….just a few turns past…..that….”
What was the word?
“….village….”
“Alright sir. Just stay calm. We are sending a helicopter to come get you.”
The words took far too long to sink in.
“…right….”
Then, there was silence.
Suddenly, the phone was dialing again. Had he called someone?
“Hello? Scout?” Came the voice of Miss Pauling.
“Pauling….?” Scout was horrified at his voice. Had it sounded like that before? It sounded like he had swallowed a pound of gravel.
Suddenly, he became aware of the pain in his chest again.
“Scout, is everything alright? Are you still there?” Miss Pauling asked.
“I think…. I mean, something….happened….I….might not…… make it….home….” Scout’s voice was near a whisper.
Breathing was difficult and his head felt like a ticking bomb.
“Scout! Scout, speak to me! What happened?” Miss Pauling’s voice came again.
Scout blinked slowly. He was too tired to speak.
“I….love you Miss Pauling…..always…have….” Scout inhaled deeply. “Tell the guys….I love them, too….”
Scout blinked again, trying to muster up the strength to say something poetic. He couldn’t find the words. His whole brain hurt. Scout laid his face in the hot, sharp stones. A short rest would do him good. A small nap would get him back in his feet.
The sound of a helicopter filled his ears as he drifted off into the darkness.
The next time Scout was aware of anything, he was in a familiar environment.
He blinked a few times, his view of the base infirmary focusing in his eyes.
How was he back in New Mexico? Last time he checked, he was in Hawaii.
The door to the infirmary opened, drawing Scout’s attention to it.
A very tired-looking Medic stepped through the door.
As the door swung closed again, Scout caught a glimpse of a few of the other mercs sitting in the waiting area just outside.
A voice brought Scout’s attention back to Medic.
“Five days and a four hour flight over the Pacific and of course, you wake up the moment i leave the room.” Medic said as he crossed the room and crossed something off of a medical chart.
“Welcome back.”
Hex and Weatherly drop down in front of two research machines, their chat helping Hex get to grips with her results. Ever the studious sim, Weatherly logs into the research machine to study whilst Hex chats beside him.
She tries not to look nervously at the machines in the room. The library has replaced the one that she stole a while ago. Do they realise how tempting it is when they leave easily taken, expensive equipment around like this?
Weatherly: “So, you want to move?”
Hex: “I do. You’d think that being in university housing this close to campus wouldn’t affect our travel, but I can’t let it affect my grades next semester.”
Weatherly: “Absolutely. What do you think about housing on the outskirts of town?”
Hex can’t help but smile as Weatherly instantly agrees with her. He’d uproot his whole life just to make her happy. In fact, he did do that when they were teenagers. He left a private school and moved to Copperdale High so they could finish high school together. She has to wonder if he knows just how much she appreciates him.
Hex: “It’s so illogical that it’d probably work. I heard there were some new townhouses being built, even though they aren’t residential rental lots. I’ll take a look.”
The pair set about their tasks - studying and apartment hunting. It’s not lost on Hex how grown up the decision feels to be looking at homes with Weatherly. Is this a brief glimpse into her future with him?
The strike is affecting hair, makeup, lighting, grips, art department, painters, carpenters, editors, script supervisors, production assistants, special effects, stunts, sound, actors, extras and more.
But it's also affecting the local economy in ways you wouldn't think about.
Bars and restaurants near studios are hurting because they're not getting people walking over on their lunch.
A studio lot is a small town. A couple thousand people pass through at any given day and businesses inside the studio lots don't have customers. Restaurants, cafeterias, even salons, masseuses and dentists. If no one can get in a lot because of a picket line, they don't have business.
Equipment rental houses don't have anyone to rent gear to. Most of these are small mom and pop businesses.
Catering companies who serve cast and crew breakfast and lunch every single day. No work for them.
Security companies who work on location with us. No work for them.
Venues that earn thousands of dollars a day primarily as a filming location can't pay their mortgages. There are literally venues and Independent studios that serve as locations for filming more than any other event.
Also if people aren't working they can't shop anywhere else either.
You can't swing a cat in Los Angeles without hitting something that relies on film and television production. There are even banks and credit unions specifically geared toward crew.
This does not affect the millionaire producers show runners and executives. They are safe at home in the Pacific Palisades with multiple Teslas in the garage.
Also, The Melody Lingers On!
WHOOOO OKAY. This is one I am EXTREMELY excited about because old Hollywood musicals of the 1930s - 1940s was my very first hyperfixation and I've been itching for a way to somehow incorporate that into an OFMD fic and I think I finally landed on it!
Context: one thing I always found fascinating about musicals of that time period is that they were deliberately crafted to be an escape, because the movies were some of the few luxuries people could afford. The Great Depression was devastating families, but when you watch the musicals, you just saw glittering nightclubs and tuxedos and evening gowns. For 35 cents you could step away from all your struggles and watch simple problems get solved in 90 minutes all while singing and dancing and laughing.
SO this story would feature Ed as a Broadway legend known primarily for dancing, who injures his knee when a piece of stage equipment malfunctions and is really depressed over his career as he knows it likely being over. He's just camping out in his apartment and decides to visit a video rental shop that's going out of business and finds a bunch of old musicals featuring Stede Bonnet. He ends up getting really sucked into them, and then eventually Stede...somehow ends up able to talk to him through the TV? Eventually Ed realizes he's literally able to step into the TV and into Stede's black and white glamorous world, and it's everything he could want. His knee doesn't hurt there, he's falling in love with Stede, he doesn't have to think about what he's going to do next with his career.
Except of course you can't escape your life forever, and Stede doesn't want Ed to just live in this artificial world with him. So the fic explores Ed trying to figure out the real Stede Bonnet's story, and how they can exist in the real world together as a couple, and Ed coming to grips with his injury. And all the while it gives me opportunity to write some star-crossed lovers and play in a black and white world and deliver some bittersweet angst with a happy ending. 💕
Send me asks about my WIPs!
How to Choose the Right Rental Car for Your Travel Needs
When planning a trip to Iceland, choosing the right rental car can make a big difference in your travel experience. Whether you’re visiting for the stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, or natural wonders, having the right vehicle ensures you can explore everything Iceland has to offer comfortably and safely. Here’s a guide to help you select the best rental car for your travel needs, especially if you're considering a car rental in Iceland.
1. Assess Your Travel Plans
Before selecting a car, evaluate your travel itinerary. Are you staying mostly in the city, or will you be venturing into Iceland’s rugged terrain? If your plans involve Reykjavik and surrounding areas, a compact or economy car from an Iceland car rental at Reykjavik Airport might suffice. These vehicles are fuel-efficient, easy to maneuver, and perfect for urban driving or exploring popular tourist spots along paved roads.
However, if you plan on exploring Iceland's remote regions, such as the Highlands or the famous Ring Road, it’s essential to rent a 4x4 vehicle. Many of these areas have gravel roads, and a 4x4 vehicle offers the stability and control you’ll need for a safe journey. Check with your Iceland car rental provider to confirm if the roads you plan to travel on require a four-wheel drive vehicle.
2. Consider the Season
Iceland's weather is unpredictable, and the season you choose to visit will play a major role in selecting the right rental car. During winter months, snow, ice, and unpredictable storms can make driving a challenge. In these conditions, it's essential to choose a car that is equipped with snow tires and offers a strong grip on icy roads. A reliable 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for winter travel to ensure safety when traversing more treacherous paths.
In summer, the roads are generally more accessible, and a 2WD vehicle is suitable for traveling around the main tourist spots and well-maintained highways. Opting for an affordable car rental in Iceland during the summer can save you money, especially if your plans don't involve off-road driving.
3. Focus on Comfort and Space
Another important factor in choosing the right rental car is ensuring that it accommodates the number of passengers and luggage you’re traveling with. Iceland is known for its breathtaking road trips, so spending time in the car is inevitable. You’ll want a vehicle that offers comfort, especially if you’re driving long distances.
If you’re traveling with family or friends, a larger vehicle, such as an SUV or van, might be a better fit. These options provide more space for passengers and luggage, making the journey more comfortable. On the other hand, if you're traveling solo or as a couple with minimal luggage, a smaller, more affordable car rental in Iceland will suit your needs perfectly.
4. Compare Prices and Look for Deals
Car rental prices can vary greatly depending on the type of car, rental duration, and additional services such as insurance. It’s always a good idea to compare rates from different Iceland car rental companies and look for any seasonal deals or discounts.
Additionally, consider picking up your vehicle directly from the Iceland car rental Reykjavik Airport for convenience. Most rental agencies offer competitive rates and a wide range of vehicle options at the airport, allowing you to start your journey immediately upon arrival.
Conclusion
Choosing the right rental car for your travel needs in Iceland is all about understanding your itinerary, the season, and your budget. Whether you’re looking for an affordable car rental in Iceland or need a sturdy 4x4 for off-road adventures, taking the time to assess your travel plans will ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. With the right car, you’ll be well-prepared to explore the magnificent landscapes of Iceland with confidence and comfort.
How To Get the Most Out of Your Jack Hammer Hire Experience?
Tumblr media
A jackhammer can be an invaluable asset when embarking on a construction or demolition project. Its ability to efficiently break through tough materials, such as concrete or asphalt, makes it a go-to tool for many professionals and DIY enthusiasts.
However, to ensure a successful and effective jack hammer hire in Melbourne experience, it is essential to approach the process with careful planning and consideration. This guide outlines key steps to help you maximise the value of your jackhammer hire.
Select the Appropriate Jack Hammer
Before you rent a jackhammer, it's crucial to select the right model for your specific project. Jackhammers come in various types, including electric and pneumatic options.
Electric jackhammers are suitable for smaller indoor tasks, while pneumatic models provide greater power and efficiency for larger outdoor projects.
Assessing the scope of your work will allow you to choose the most suitable equipment, ensuring you achieve optimal results.
Familiarise Yourself with the Equipment
Once you have secured your jackhammer, familiarise yourself with its features and controls. Many rental companies provide a brief orientation on the equipment, including instructions on operating it safely and effectively.
Understanding the functionality of the jackhammer will enhance your efficiency and minimise the risk of accidents. Prior preparation can significantly improve your jack hammer hire Melbourne experience.
Prioritise Safety
Safety is paramount when operating heavy machinery like a jackhammer. Before commencing work, ensure you have the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). Essential safety gear includes:
Safety goggles to protect your eyes from debris.
Ear protection to mitigate the noise generated by the jackhammer.
Steel-toed boots to safeguard your feet from potential falling objects.
Gloves to provide a secure grip and prevent blisters.
Implementing safety measures will protect you and foster a productive working environment.
Tumblr media
Prepare Your Work Area
A well-prepared work area can greatly enhance your efficiency. Before using the jackhammer, clear the site of any obstacles, debris, or sensitive items that could be damaged during operation. If you are working in a residential area, consider using barriers or warning signs to ensure the safety of passersby.
A tidy and organised workspace facilitates better focus and minimises the risk of accidents during your jack hammer hire Melbourne experience.
Manage Your Energy Levels
Operating a jackhammer is physically demanding, and maintaining energy levels is essential for effective performance. Schedule regular breaks to rest and hydrate.
Staying properly hydrated will enhance your stamina and improve your concentration. Taking brief pauses to assess your progress can help ensure you are working efficiently and safely.
Return the Equipment in Good Condition
It is important to return the jackhammer in the same condition it was received after completing your project. Clean the equipment thoroughly and inspect it for any signs of damage before returning it to the rental company.
Demonstrating care for the equipment will prevent additional charges and contribute to a positive relationship with the rental provider, enhancing your future jack hammer hire Melbourne experiences.
Conclusion: Ensure a Successful Jack Hammer Hire Experience
When approached with careful planning and consideration, hiring a jackhammer can significantly facilitate your construction or demolition project.
By selecting the appropriate equipment, familiarising yourself with its operation, prioritising safety, and preparing your workspace, you can maximise the effectiveness of your jack hammer hire Melbourne experience.
With these strategies in mind, you are well-equipped to tackle your next project with confidence and efficiency.
Gear Up for Adventure: Must-Have Equipment for a Perfect Ski Trip
Embarking on a snow skiing adventure can be a thrilling experience, but ensuring you have the right gear is essential for safety, comfort, and performance. Whether you're a seasoned skier or hitting the slopes for the first time, having the appropriate equipment can make or break your trip. Here's a detailed guide to help you prepare and make your next ski trip a success.
Essential Skiing Clothing
Skiing in the mountains means being exposed to frigid temperatures, harsh winds, and unpredictable weather. Staying warm and dry is a top priority. The correct layering system, which involves base, mid, and outer layers, will help regulate your body temperature while keeping you comfortable.
Base Layer: The base layer, worn directly on your skin, should be moisture-wicking and breathable to prevent sweat buildup. Merino wool or synthetic fabrics like polyester are excellent choices. Avoid cotton, as it tends to retain moisture, leaving you cold and damp.
Mid-Layer: The mid-layer provides insulation. Fleece or down jackets are ideal for trapping heat without adding bulk. The choice of thickness depends on your preference and the conditions you'll face.
Outer Layer: The outer layer is your shield against the elements. A waterproof and windproof ski jacket and pants are essential. Look for materials like Gore-Tex that offer both breathability and protection. Ventilation zippers are also helpful in releasing excess heat.
Ski Boots and Bindings
The right pair of ski boots can significantly impact your skiing experience. They need to fit snugly, providing support and control while being comfortable enough to wear for extended periods.
Ski Boots: When selecting ski boots, comfort and fit should be your primary concerns. Boots that are too tight or too loose can lead to discomfort or even injury. Visit a professional boot fitter to ensure a perfect fit. The stiffness, or flex, of the boot should match your skiing style – softer for beginners and stiffer for advanced skiers.
Bindings: Ski bindings connect your boots to your skis, and they play a critical role in your safety. Properly adjusted bindings will release during a fall to prevent injury. Make sure your bindings are correctly set to your weight, height, and skill level. If you're unsure, have a ski technician assist you with the setup.
Skis: Choosing the Right Type
The type of skis you select will vary based on your experience level, skiing style, and the terrain you plan to tackle. Generally, skis come in different widths, lengths, and flexibilities to accommodate various conditions and skier preferences.
All-Mountain Skis: These versatile skis are designed to handle a variety of conditions, from groomed runs to light powder. They are an excellent option for intermediate to advanced skiers who like to explore different parts of the mountain.
Powder Skis: If you're venturing into deep, fresh snow, powder skis are a must. These are wider than all-mountain skis, providing an extra surface area to help you float on top of the snow.
Carving Skis: Carving skis are ideal for skiers who prefer to stick to groomed slopes. They are narrower and designed for making tight, precise turns on hard-packed snow.
For beginners, rental skis are often a good option, as they allow you to experiment with different styles and find what works best before making a significant purchase.
Ski Poles
Ski poles may seem like a simple accessory, but choosing the right pair can enhance your balance and rhythm while skiing. They help with pushing off on flat terrain and provide stability as you navigate the slopes.
Size: When choosing ski poles, size matters. Hold the pole upside down, gripping it just below the basket (the round part near the bottom). If your elbow forms a 90-degree angle, the pole is the correct length.
Material: Aluminum poles are durable and affordable, while carbon fiber poles are lighter and more flexible, though they come at a higher cost. Choose based on your budget and needs.
Helmets and Goggles: Safety First
Safety is paramount when skiing, and protecting your head and eyes is essential. Helmets and goggles should be part of every skier's gear, no matter their skill level.
Helmets: A well-fitting helmet can prevent serious injuries. Modern ski helmets are lightweight and comfortable and often come with adjustable vents for temperature regulation. When choosing a helmet, ensure it fits snugly but comfortably, covering your forehead without obstructing your vision.
Goggles: Goggles protect your eyes from the sun, wind, snow, and UV rays while improving visibility in various conditions. Look for goggles with anti-fog and UV-protection features. If you often ski in low-light conditions, consider goggles with interchangeable lenses to suit different lighting environments.
Gloves and Mittens
Cold fingers can ruin a ski day, so having a good pair of gloves or mittens is crucial.
Gloves: Gloves offer more talent, making it easier to adjust gear or use your phone on the slopes. Look for waterproof, insulated gloves that provide warmth without sacrificing movement.
Mittens: For those who struggle with cold hands, mittens provide superior warmth by allowing your fingers to generate heat together. Many skiers prefer mittens on frigid days.
Additional Accessories for Your Ski Trip
Beyond the basics, several accessories can enhance your skiing experience:
Neck Gaiter or Balaclava: These provide additional warmth and protection from the wind. Neck gaiters are versatile and can cover your neck, mouth, and nose, while balaclavas offer full head coverage.
Backpack: A small, lightweight backpack is helpful for carrying snacks, water, and extra layers. Look for a pack with ski-specific features like straps for carrying your skis and a hydration system.
Sunscreen: Remember sunscreen! UV rays are stronger at higher altitudes, and the sun's reflection off the snow can cause burns even on cloudy days.
Preparing for Your Ski Trip
Once you have all the gear, it's time to prepare for your trip. Make sure your equipment is well-maintained, with sharp ski edges and properly waxed skis for optimal performance. Consider getting a tune-up at a ski shop before hitting the slopes. Finally, pack all your gear the night before to avoid last-minute stress.
With the right gear and preparation, your ski trip is sure to be a success. Whether you're gliding down groomed trails or carving through powder, having the appropriate equipment ensures both safety and enjoyment. So gear up and get ready for an unforgettable experience on the slopes!
Understanding Skiing Terminology: A Glossary for Beginners
If you’re new to skiing, all the jargon and technical terms can be a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry—understanding some basic skiing terminology can help you feel more confident and prepared on the slopes. Whether you’re gearing up for your first run or heading out for some skiing deep snow, here’s a simple glossary to get you started.
1. Carving
Carving is when you make smooth, clean turns on the snow. Instead of skidding or sliding, your skis cut into the snow, creating a sharp edge. It’s a technique used to make controlled and efficient turns, especially on groomed trails.
2. Edge
The edge of your ski is the metal strip along the side. It helps you grip the snow and make turns. Learning to use your edges properly is key to skiing confidently, especially when navigating more challenging terrain like skiing deep snow.
3. Powder
Powder refers to fresh, light, and fluffy snow. It’s often found off the beaten path and is highly sought after by skiers for its soft and smooth riding experience. If you’re interested in skiing deep snow, powder is what you’ll be looking for!
4. Goggles
Goggles are protective eyewear that shields your eyes from snow, wind, and bright sunlight. They help you see clearly and stay comfortable while skiing. Make sure your goggles fit well and have proper UV protection.
5. Bindings
Bindings are the parts of your skis that hold your boots in place. They are adjustable to fit different boot sizes and can release in case of a fall to help prevent injuries.
6. Pole Plants
Pole plants are when you use your ski poles to help with balance and timing while turning. As you turn, you push the pole into the snow to stabilize yourself and guide your movement.
7. Moguls
Moguls are bumps or mounds of snow that form on the slope. They create a bumpy terrain that can be challenging to ski over. Skiers who enjoy a bit of a challenge often practice skiing moguls to improve their technique and control.
8. Snowplow
The snowplow (or pizza as some call it) is a basic skiing position where your skis are angled inward to form a “V” shape. This position helps you slow down and control your speed, making it ideal for beginners.
9. Après-Ski
Après-ski refers to the social activities and relaxation that take place after a day on the slopes. It’s a great way to unwind, enjoy some food and drinks, and share stories about your day.
10. Terrain Park
A terrain park is an area designed for skiers and snowboarders to practice tricks and jumps. It features obstacles like rails, boxes, and jumps, which are set up for freestyle skiing.
11. Base Area
The base area is the starting point of the ski resort where you’ll find facilities like ski rentals, ticket booths, and often food and beverage options. It’s where you’ll begin and end your day on the slopes.
12. Glade
A glade is a forested area with spaced-out trees that provides natural skiing terrain. Skiing in a glade can be a fun adventure, especially if you’re exploring off-piste or deep snow areas.
13. Uphill Travel
Uphill travel refers to the process of moving up the mountain, usually using special equipment or techniques, like climbing skins on your skis. This is often used by backcountry skiers to access unmarked or off-trail areas.
14. Flat Light
Flat light occurs when the sky is overcast or snowy, reducing contrast on the snow. It can make it harder to see changes in terrain, so it’s important to be extra cautious and adjust your skiing technique accordingly.
Conclusion
Getting familiar with skiing terminology can make your time on the slopes more enjoyable and less confusing. Whether you’re mastering the art of skiing deep snow or just learning the basics, understanding these terms will help you feel more confident and prepared for your skiing adventures. So, next time you hit the mountain, you’ll know exactly what’s what and can focus on having a fantastic time.
Whether you’re cruising along the coastline, navigating the city streets, or winding through mountain roads, it’s important to prioritize your safety. At Golden Coast Riders, we offer exceptional motorcycle rentals San Diego and are dedicated to ensuring you have a safe and enjoyable ride. Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind while you’re out on the road.
Preparing for a Safe Ride
1. Wear the Right Gear
Your safety starts with proper protective gear. Before you embark on your journey, make sure you’re equipped with:
Helmet: A DOT-approved helmet is crucial for head protection and is required by law in California.
Gloves: Quality gloves protect your hands from the elements and potential injuries.
Jacket and Pants: Choose abrasion-resistant clothing designed for motorcyclists to minimize injury in case of a fall.
Boots: Sturdy, non-slip boots that cover your ankles are essential for stability and protection.
Eye Protection: Use a visor or goggles to shield your eyes from debris and wind.
2. Conduct a Pre-Ride Check
Before you hit the road, perform a quick inspection of your motorcycle to ensure it’s in top condition. Focus on:
Tires: Check for proper inflation and ensure the tread is sufficient for a good grip.
Brakes: Test both front and rear brakes to make sure they are responsive.
Lights: Confirm that all lights, including headlights, taillights, and turn signals, are working properly.
Fluids: Check the levels of oil, coolant, and brake fluid to avoid any issues during your ride.
Chain/Belt: Ensure the chain or belt is properly tensioned and lubricated.
3. Familiarize Yourself with the Motorcycle
Before starting your journey, take some time to get acquainted with the motorcycle you’ve chosen. Golden Coast Riders offers a wide fleet of motorcycles, including popular Harley Rentals San Diego, allowing you to select a bike that suits your style. Getting comfortable with the bike’s controls and handling can greatly enhance your riding experience.
Safe Riding Practices in San Diego
1. Obey Traffic Laws
Adhering to traffic rules is essential for your safety and the safety of others. Keep these key points in mind:
Observe Speed Limits: Always ride within the speed limits, adjusting for road conditions and traffic.
Use Signals: Clearly communicate your intentions to other road users by using hand signals and turn indicators.
Stay in Your Lane: Avoid lane splitting or weaving through traffic; staying in your lane helps prevent accidents.
2. Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions
Riding in a busy area like San Diego requires your full attention:
Stay Alert: Keep your eyes on the road and be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Avoid Using Your Phone: If you need to make a call or check directions, pull over to a safe spot before doing so.
3. Make Yourself Visible
Being visible to other drivers is key to avoiding accidents:
Wear Bright Clothing: High-visibility gear makes it easier for others to see you, especially in low light conditions.
Add Reflective Elements: Incorporate reflective strips on your clothing and motorcycle for added visibility at night.
Use Your Lights: Ride with your headlights on during the day to ensure you’re seen by other road users.
4. Practice Defensive Riding
Defensive riding can help you avoid potential dangers on the road:
Maintain a Safe Distance: Keep a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead to allow for sudden stops.
Anticipate Other Drivers: Be prepared for unexpected actions from other motorists, especially in heavy traffic.
Avoid Blind Spots: Stay out of other vehicles’ blind spots to ensure they can see you.
Specific Riding Tips for San Diego
1. Coastal Highways
San Diego’s coastal routes, such as the Pacific Coast Highway, are beautiful but require caution:
Watch for Wind: Coastal winds can be strong, so maintain a firm grip on your handlebars.
Beware of Sand and Debris: Coastal roads can have sand and debris, particularly after storms, so ride carefully.
2. City Riding
Navigating through the city requires heightened awareness:
Look Out for Pedestrians: San Diego is a pedestrian-friendly city, so be cautious around crosswalks and busy areas.
Be Careful at Intersections: Many accidents occur at intersections, so approach them with caution and stay alert.
3. Mountain Roads
The nearby mountains offer scenic routes but also pose specific challenges:
Slow Down for Curves: Reduce speed before entering curves and accelerate smoothly as you exit to maintain control.
Watch for Wildlife: Be vigilant for wildlife, which can suddenly appear on rural roads, especially at dawn or dusk.
