The doorbell rang, waking Boston. She grumbled, but you couldn’t really blame someone for coming too early and waking you up when it was 6pm.

She rolled out of bed, running a hand through her mussy hair, and answered the door.

“Trick or Treat!” Three children in costumes stood on her doorstep, holding out bags expectantly.

“Oh, fuck,” said Boston, and then realized what she’d said. “Wait, no, I mean—shit!”

“Hello, children!” said a voice behind them. The kids turned to see a very large, tough looking woman behind them. She had a shaved head and muscly arms covered in tattoos. One of the kids screamed.

“No, no, is okay!” said Yevgenia, placatingly. “I have treats for you, here.” She rustled through one of the bags she was carrying, and pulled out three little knitted jack-o-lanterns, which she put in the kids’ bags. “There. Now please do not trick us.”

Satisfied, if slightly freaked out, the kids hurried away. Boston stepped back from the door, giving Yevgenia room to come in.

“I totally forgot it was Halloween,” said Boston.

“How can you forget Halloween?” Said Yevgenia. “We are werewolves!”

“It’s not Werewolf day,” said Boston. “Besides, I’ve never been much of a holiday person.”

“I love holidays,” said Yevgenia, dropping all her bags on the table. “That is why I was out getting last-minute supplies. Look, I got us both costumes.”

Yevgenia pulled the costumes out to show Boston.

“No,” said Boston. “No way. Nuh-uh. We can’t wear those!”

“Come on, where is your sense of humor!” said Yevgenia.

“I’ve never had a sense of humor, and you know it.”

“Please! For me!” Yevgenia pulled Boston into a hug, and then gave her a kiss. “Do this thing for your wife. It will be fun!”

Boston blushed, but continued to grumble under her breath.

An hour later, they were at the Grimbite Hunter’s Halloween Bash, wearing fake vampire fangs and big black and red cloaks.

Boston groaned and covered her face with her hands. “I’m going to kill you later,” she said.

“You could not kill me. You are small and weak, and you love me too much, which would reduce your strength even further. Although my love for you would also reduce my strength in counter attacks, so perhaps it would end in tie,” said Yevgenia. “Oh look, there’s Barbara. Hi, Barbara!”

When they got home later, their house had been egged.
