Something that bugs me about most "no homophobia" SF&F settings is that they rarely put any thought into how or why homosexuality would or wouldn't be considered normal and acceptable within a specific society. Like, oh, this is a highly hierarchical society where family name is considered extremely important and marriages often represent political/economic alliances between powerful families? And also gay marriage has been legal for 30 years? And everyone's just fully okay with that now?
Okay, so if most marriages occurring are still patrilineal (the wife is considered to be joining the husband's family and any children they have are part of the husband's family line) then how is that navigated with a same-sex couple? What if the only remaining heir to a powerful family can't have biological children with their legal spouse? How is inheritance handled in those cases? Are you telling me there's truly no social expectations or family pressures around which form of relationship is still considered "ideal"? How exactly is that possible? Also, if you're going out of your way to tell me when same-sex marriages became legal, can you also tell me why, in this setting, it was illegal in the first place? And what sort of movement led to it becoming legalized? Is there really no political pressure from any direction in this society that would want to reverse that decision? I don't need a whole history book, but I'd at least like to be given enough detail that I can extrapolate some level of believable complexity to the whole situation.
From an audience perspective, I do understand why some readers would really just rather not think about it. But for me personally a setting which fully ignores these questions just makes me think about it more lmao. It just feels so fake and empty to me.
And it's unfortunate because I think a setting where these sorts of questions were seriously addressed instead of just ignored and handwaved away with "no one really cares or thinks about it much" could actually be really interesting and compelling.

Cool! Luckily the Clock King isn’t real, either. Just like all those invisible, unspoken rules.
Reminder for my fellow OCD-havers: That invisible, unspoken rule you're following that's currently keeping you stuck isn't real. You can do that thing you want/need to do, even if you haven't met the hidden requirements yet, and nothing bad will happen.
#genuinely not trying to be hostile so I’m sorry if it comes across that way#but sometimes OCD can manifest as believing your life is controlled by narrative principles#so I think it’s important to include a reminder that real life doesn’t work that way#nothing bad is going to happen just because it would be narratively ironic

Well, there’s only one way to try to prove me wrong—do the thing without following the secret rule, see what happens.

"Ok, ma'am that'll be 226.03$."
I take my wallet out of my pocket and unfold it. It is empty other than a single moth that lazily flies out. The moth lands on the tap point of the card reader. There's a beat, and my payment is processed. The moth flies back into my wallet and I put it back in my pocket.
