You know those cheesy pasta dishes with all the fancy add-ins like heavy cream and garlic so we can all pretend to ourselves that we aren't just eating mac and cheese like overgrown children? What sort of equivalent dishes do the people of Tamriel enjoy, that are basically just dressed-up "kid food" dishes?
Who doesn't love a cheeky meal that brings back memories of childhood? Across Tamriel, you'll find all manner of simple, hearty foods that will make you feel like a kid again!
Altmer
In Summerset, young and old alike enjoy mochi, a tasty sweet snack made from chewy glutinous rice flour. Mochi comes in many varieties, with fillings like sweet peanut or black sesame paste. However, almost everyone's favourite is a cold mochi filled with soft gelato of various flavours. My favourite combination is matcha mochi wrapped around a moreish azuki bean ice cream centre.
Argonians
Is there anything that makes you feel more like a kid than some snacking? Argonians are huge fans of anything that packs a crunch, both sweet and savoury. Whether it's spicy and sweet crickets, dark saltrice sauce-coated mealworms, or just good old prawn crackers with some dipping sambal, be prepared to snack your way all day long in Black Marsh.
Bosmer
If you're one of those people who stands in the kitchen gnawing a block of cheese at midnight, you're in good company in Valenwood. A popular late-night treat served at street food vendors across the Province is a simple cup of grilled witchetty grubs slathered in timber mammoth cheese sauce and topped with pulled pork. The grubs are meaty in flavour, and the pungent timber mammoth cheese complements the pulled pork when mixed all together, as the locals enjoy it.
Bretons
Pain au chocolat? Yes please! These deliciously buttery puffed pastries are essentially rectangular croissants enveloping delicious dark chocolate. Served warm, they're sure to make any breakfast or teatime a happy one! To really satisfy those chocolate cravings, pair with a classic Breton hot chocolate, complete with marshmallows and whipped cream.
Dunmer
Marshmerrow cake is the ubiquitous Dunmeri dessert that has gained popularity far beyond the borders of Morrowind due to its mild flavour and unique candy aroma. A soft sponge cake, which is sometimes soaked in comberry brandy, is layered with sweet marshmerrow crème patissiere, caramelised marshmerrow crumble, and maraschino comberries. Sure to knock some years off your age and put a couple more holes in your belt (it's impossible to stop at one slice. Source: me).
Imperials
There's nothing quite like homemade gnocchi with ragout for Imperials when it comes to comfort food. While this homey dish is prevalent across Cyrodiil, every household cooks the dish differently. In mine, my mother pan-fries the gnocchi in an obnoxious amount of butter, and tops it with her top-secret slow-cooked lamb and red wine ragout. While I cannot give away the secrets to her ragout, I highly recommend trying this delicious dish a try when you need to warm yourself, body and soul.
Khajiit
If you think you can turn away cinnamon and cardamom churros with a cup of moon sugar caramel dip, you're deluding yourself. This delicious treat can be found across Elsweyr and is considered one of the Province's most famous foods. Khajiiti churros, which are made from a mix of rice and tapioca flour, have a moist and chewy texture beneath a crisp, golden brown outer layer. They're served hot from the wok, with a cup of moon sugar caramel syrup. A truly divine pairing!
Nords
Spätzle is something I've written about in the past, and it's one of the best things I know (ask any resident of Skyrim and they'd tell you the same). These chunky egg noodles may look unrefined compared to Khajiiti vermicelli, but make up for it when liberally doused in a creamy cheese sauce and topped with fried onions. I like spicing mine up, quite literally, with some chili powder I purchased at a Sentinel bazaar.
Orcs
Nothing screams comfort food (and mess) quite like a good old echatere sausage hot dog. The echatere sausage, rather akin to Blackwood chorizo in flavour, is grilled over hot coals and served in a sourdough bun, served Wrothgar style with a good amount of horseradish mayo, fried radish chips, caramelised onions, pickles, and crispy dried baby shrimp topping. I'd say you can't stop at just one, but it's a hefty meal you can eat with one hand!
Redguards
I have probably written about gulab jamun in the past, a delicious, albeit cloying dessert popular throughout Hammerfell. An iconic dish at festivals and parties, gulab jamun is prized by dessert-lovers for its velvety, syrupy texture. These fluffy balls of cardamom-scented cottage cheese are fried and soaked in a fragrant saffron and rose water syrup, and topped with crushed pistachios. So simple, so good, and so moreish. Just be sure to stop at three, because any more and the sugar rush will send you to Aetherius!

nostalgic food
i’ll want to reference this in the future
gỏi cuốn (spring roll with chicken, egg, rice noodle, carrot, lettuce, avocado)
peanut sauce is just peanut butter+water, hoisin+sriracha sauce, and a tiny bit of sesame oil (tastes good with almost anything imo)
yellow curry
rice noodle with chicken, potatoes, yams, onions, carrots in a creamy coconut milk and yellow curry paste broth
lemon juice and salt mix with garlic chili for dipping
bò kho (vietnamese beef stew)
kho is a cooking technique where a protein is braised in a mixture of fish sauce, sugar, and water or coconut juice to make a salty/savory result
bread dips in stew beef/potatoes dip in lime juice/salt/pepper mix
cucumber slices to offset the salty
xá xíu (cantonese style bbq pork)
the seasoning mix is made of sugar, powdered soy sauce, onion and garlic powder, and spices
the pink color very much freaked out middle schoolers at lunch
cơm tấm (broken rice, grilled pork, egg, pickled carrots/daikon with scallions/oil garnish and fish sauce)
bún bò huế (thick round rice noodle with beef soup)
more "fun" than phở imo
bún bò broth: spicy salty flavor (lemongrass, spicy chili, fermented shrimp paste, fish sauce)
phở broth: earthy sweet flavor (cinnamon, star anise, onion, ginger, garlic, herbs)
bánh mì (baguette sandwich with chả lụa (pork sausage), xá xíu (cantonese style bbq pork) coriander leaf (cilantro), cucumber, pickled carrots, and pickled daikon combined with pâté and buttery mayonnaise)
salmon instead of nem nướng̣ (viet grilled pork) with bánh hỏi (rice vermicelli)
feat nori (dried edible seaweed)
wrapped with lettuce and dipped in nước mắm (fish sauce)
bánh cuốn (rice noodle rolls filled with ground meat, wood ear mushrooms, onions)
topped with chả lụa (pork sausage) and fried red onions and nước mắm (fermented salted fish sauce)
a fav of grandpa's
pizza man mispronounces it as "bun goo" which makes my mom giggle cause the way he says goo sounds like penis
bánh tét (glutinous rice rolled in a banana leaf into a thick, log-like cylindrical shape, with a mung bean and pork filling)
bánh rán (deep fried sesame ball filled with mung bean)
bánh da lợn "pig skin cake" (tapioca starch, rice flour, mung bean, taro, coconut milk)
bánh bột chiên (fried taro rice cake, a fav of pizza man)
phở (broth: earthy sweet flavor- cinnamon, star anise, onion, ginger, garlic, herbs)
ive called phở mid but while eating this i was like huh this is good actually then my dad says this time he simmered chicken bones for hours like he's supposed to instead of using canned broth
improvised bún thịt nướng (rice noodle bowl with chopped grilled pork, egg roll, veggies, crushed peanuts, fish sauce)
a way to deal with leftover noodles from gỏi cuốn
every time i eat this i think of the time me and pizza man were in new orleans and he asked if i wanted to eat at a viet place and i was surprised cause he's not really into a lot of viet food but anyway i got bún thịt nướng
thịt kho (pork with eggs braised in sticky savory caramel of sugar, fish sauce, coconut water)
i have distinct flashbacks of being in the middle school cafeteria with my thịt kho and kids around me going "what is that??", "ewwww" lol
cháo (rice porridge with chicken or a white meat fish- often served with crunchy cabbage salad)
my dad likes it with youtiao (chinese donuts)
being sick means eating this! but we also eat it a lot when we’re not sick!
when my mom was young she would say yes to any dude that asked her out and order an obscene amount of food/the most expensive things on the menu and never hear from them again but my dad took her to a cháo place cause that was his favorite but apparently for cheapskates
he proposed two weeks later and she said yes
my mom is such a menace i wanna be just like her

Random ask -- What is YOUR favorite food? What the best meal you've ever tasted and still think about?
i got another of these uno reverse asks and answered it here which is excellent bc it gives me free license to talk about one of my other favorite meals: Bún Thịt Nướng
it's a vietnamese dish made with vermicelli noodles, grilled pork (or chicken) usually cooked with lemongrass (my beloved), and pickled carrots & radish, cucumber, sometimes sprouts and peanuts, and ofc nước chấm sauce. ime the components are served a lil bit separately, so each of them maintains their own flavor and temperature, and then you combine them for individual bites. it's flavorful and refreshing and delicious and i absolutely adore it.
i haven't had it for ages and am so close to snapping and working out how to make it myself.
(put a pic under the cut!)
#asked and answered#im enjoying all these food asks (reading and receiving) so much omg#yes i am a foodie mayhaps

Cay Café, 46551 Mission Blvd, Fremont, CA 94539
It took awhile, but the 99 Ranch Food Hall is finally fully occupied. Cay Café just opened and they serve banh mi, build your own “fresh bowls,” rolls, and drinks (including matcha drinks, Vietnamese egg coffee, ube coffee, etc.). The manager was super nice and told me they have a bakery in Hayward and they make their own bread, roast their own pork, make their own pate, etc.
Order from the kiosk or from the cashier. You’ll get a number and they’ll call out that number when your order is ready.
Crunchy roasted pork banh mi ($9.50 + $2 for pate): slices of roasted pork with house special spicy sauce, pickled daikon & carrot, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno, house sauce, and mayo. So the bread was soft with a light crunch. It seemed a bit underbaked to me? I’m used to crunchier bread. The roasted pork was the best part because the skin was so crispy and the fatty bits made it even better. The pickled carrots and daikon seemed more sweet than tangy, the jalapenos weren’t spicy, the spicy sauce wasn’t spicy, and there was only a sprig or two of cilantro. They also forgot the pate but I pointed it out and they gave me a cup of pate (delicious too).
Fresh bowl with vermicelli, grilled pork, egg roll, and peanut sauce ($11 + $2.25 for an egg roll). The bowls come with cucumbers, lettuce, cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon. I did not see any cilantro? The lettuce was shredded. The peanut sauce was good but I should have chosen nuoc cham. The egg roll was packed with ground pork, crispy, and piping hot. The pork had a nice marinade.
Everything was 10% off during the soft opening. I like this place but they need to use more fresh herbs. They ran out of bread in the evening, so the banh mi was not available.
4 out of 5 stars.

While we are on the subject of Vietnamese cuisine, here is my go-to meal when I eat out Asian (if I have the option to order it). The images are premixed and mixed.
On the menu, it's known as Bún thịt nướng chả giò (if I got the accents right)- and it's basically just rice vermicelli noodles with an assortment of vegetables, grilled meat (pork), and spring rolls.
It's kind of a cluster funk, but it's very hard to mess up and is pretty filling!
#I love pickled veggies it's nice and acidic#This restaurant had delicious grilled pork too it was very flavourful mmmmm#In the background was pho but tbh. It tasted pretty normal :/#My grandma makes better pho#But like. Mmmmm. Bun thit nuong#Since I don't visit Canada over the summer anymore I don't get be in the family barbeques#The only way I can get my bun thit nuong fix is at restaurants //and ig making it myself but it's not the same :(#The restaurant is called phở đúi bò btw //crossing my fingers I got the accents right#Very tasty#The presentation was also amazing hehe#mun rambles

pork vermicelli bowls? Are those like poke bowls but with added noodles?
they’re kinda similar to poke bowls!
they’re Vietnamese, called Bún thịt nướng. they’re usually cold vermicelli noodles, grilled protein or tofu, veggies like carrot/cucumber, herbs like mint, topped with peanuts, served with fish sauce. i’ve seen a bunch of variations on it at different places, but they always wind up tasting amazing wherever i get one!!
#im not vietnamese so sorry if i said anything incorrect here#its been a long minute since i had one or made one#i need to get one soon#the pork is my fav but the tofu ones r sooooo good too

大家好! Bougainvillea dots our streets, adding pops of vibrant colour. Although this flower isn't native to Singapore, it thrives in our warm, tropical weather. I'm dedicating this photo to Palestinians in Gaza. Now, more than ever, they need our kindness and support as they fight perhaps their toughest battle for survival in a very long time. Living conditions are very harsh and food is scarce, yet, they're determined to show the world how they live, find beauty in the little things as well as create moments of joy. Separated by seas and swathes of land, those of us who feel sorry for them do every little bit we can - donate, share their stories and make sure Gaza is not forgotten.

Pa and I returned to the Japanese restaurant specialising in grilled foods without using oil. This time, we shared cod and salmon shioyaki, as well as king oyster and shiitake mushrooms and okra with a bowl of rice each. Shioyaki is now our preferred way to eat grilled fish since it's less salty. Their cod was as perfect as the first time we tried it; their salmon was good, although it could've been even more tender. We liked the vegetables very much - very fresh and delicious. Pa and I polished off everything. The restaurant gave out more meal vouchers, so we'll definitely revisit since Pa likes the food here and there're moderately healthy options for us.

Mummy and I revisited the cafe which sells excellent ginger chicken rice. This time, she tried the chicken and mushroom rice; I opted for spicy prawn noodle soup. I swapped kway teow (thin flat rice noodles) for yellow noodles and bee hoon (vermicelli) because it's smoother and more slurpable. The cafe's version of this beloved regional dish is halal; chicken is used instead of pork, along with bouncy shrimp, fish cakes, half an egg, kangkong (water spinach) and beansprouts. The broth is SO delicious! Robust with a strong prawn fragrance and mildly spicy, this is perfect for cold rainy days. I'll try their assam laksa when we visit again.
The US has vetoed another UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate, permanent and unconditional ceasefire. It was the only country to vote against the resolution. At this point, many of us don't expect the US to do the right thing and stop the genocide. All we can do is support the Palestinians in our capacity. We don't have high expectations for a ceasefire where Lebanon is concerned either. By now, we're pretty much prepared that it's wayang (all a show) and will lead to nothing. All we feel towards Biden and his administration is disgust.
Until a permanent ceasefire is achieved, my heart remains firmly with the Palestinians who have been suffering far too much for over a year . Before the genocide began, I hadn't paid attention to the torment they'd endured under an illegal occupation of their land that spanned decades. Now that it's happened, I can't unsee what I've seen nor unlearn what I've learnt. This is the single most brutal massacre i've ever encountered in my lifetime. And I hope that there will come a time when their basic human rights are restored. Nobody deserves the pain and suffering they've been put through. 下次见!
