The Sound of Music (1965)

I was shocked to learn that The Sound of Music received mixed reviews upon its release in 1965. I can sort of understand someone criticizing the liberties it takes with the story it's based on (though of course, someone who does this should realize that real life is not particularly cinematic) but how can you not fall in love with this musical? Unabashedly sweet, it effortlessly charms you. This is exactly the kind of movie you’d love to watch on a miserable day when you’re sick. No matter how foul your mood is, it’ll lift your spirits.

In 1938 Austria, Maria (Julie Andrews, magnificent) studies to become a nun but doesn't fit in with her peers. She’s always humming a tune and constantly finds her spirit whisked away by music. To help her decide where she belongs, Maria is sent to help care for the seven children of Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). As the family bonds, everything seems blissful, until neighbouring Nazi Germany begins mobilizing its troops…

If you’ve never seen The Sound of Music before, you’ll feel a little foolish once it’s over. You haven't sat down with this movie, but you’ve heard several of the songs before, you’ve seen parodies of the most memorable scenes and you may have even seen clips out of context. It makes you go "Oh! That's from THIS movie!" There’s no way to forget My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Sixteen Going on Seventeen or So Long, Farewell and you won’t want to. Much credit belongs to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, who wrote the stage musical but if that was all the movie had going for it, you could watch a stage version. What elevates this production is the cast. Julie Andrews, best known for her role in Mary Poppins is unsurprisingly excellent as Maria. What she does almost seems easy because - like the children she cares for - you instantly fall for her. She’s so sweet, gentle and kind it’s hard to imagine even the iciest hearts - like the one beating inside Captain von Trapp - staying cold in her presence. What’s surprising is Christopher Plummer. Turns out, he can sing. I don’t know if you’d be as excited at the idea of them becoming romantically entangled if the children weren’t there, but that’s the point. If Maria does fall in love, it won’t be with just the father, it will be with the family.

The film’s best scenes often involve dance numbers. Not the big kind of dances that suddenly has everyone in the country expertly coordinated; playful, childlike dances as the young Von Trapps perform for a crowd or tender scenes between two people who tell us how they feel through lyrics and body language. Though the children are only given limited screen time and character development, they all get enough for you to understand them as people. It helps that the young actors portraying Liesl, Louisa, Friedrich, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta and Gretl are terrific.

One of my favorite things about The Sound of Music is that while it’s light, happy, romantic and carefree - maybe even corny - it has this tiny bit of tension and a smidge of fear in it too. As we approach the second act, a looming shadow in the distance keeps you wondering. When Germany annexes Austria, it’s a cold bucket of reality dumped onto this musical. Things were so sweet and light before; surely this means the family will be alright? You’re pretty sure they will be, but there’s a part of you that doubts. It’s just enough to give this movie stakes and compels you to keep watching. As nice as the film is, it might’ve been too much without that little bit of vinegar.

The Sound of Music has melted the ice around my heart and rekindled my appetite for musicals. It's the kind of picture that introduces itself to you by handing you a bouquet. You fall in love with the songs, the story and the dance numbers too. There's even a puppet show so darling it'll make your every worry and fear vanish. I can't wait to see it again. So, the bestie @coruscantrhapsody and I have a tradition of watching The Sound of Music every New Year’s Eve. NYE is a better holiday when you’re at home in pajamas, eating cupcakes you got earlier in the day. And what better way to ring in a new year than witnessing Christopher Plummer rip apart a Nazi flag?

In the spirit of our tradition, we’ve compiled the following list. How likely is it that each of the Von Trapp children are on AO3? Well…

Brigitta: Definitely on AO3. Has one username she uses more generally and another for tasteful smut. Mostly a dudeslash writer. Tends to be in one fandom at a time and is well-respected in that space.

Kurt: A master of the crack drabble, Kurt participates in a number of different challenges and exchanges in a number of different fandoms. Likely to write one of those Yuletide fics that goes viral for unique formatting.

Liesl: Insisted that fanfiction was childish before falling headlong into a regrettable Dramione phase. Now writes fics centered on female characters in fandoms that need more of that. She is proud of how her writing has evolved but notes the drop in kudos.

Louisa: Has absolutely written fanfiction. Tends to write straightforwardly tropey fics on a reliable update schedule. Aggressively wants to be seen as different from her siblings so she left AO3 for Wattpad.

Gretl: Unfortunately caught a glimpse of AO3 once, but her siblings pulled her away from the computer before it could become too much of a Formative Trauma. Liesl prints out the most wholesome My Little Pony and Pokémon fics and Gretl illustrates them.

Marta: Is she on AO3? You’ll never know.

Friedrich: Lives a blessedly offline life. Supports his siblings, though.

“I started high school at 12-years old. I really didn’t qualify for the school plays until my senior year which was actually two-years after I started,” Nell answered. “I was in “The Sound of Music” as Gretl, the youngest von Trapp. Columbia had a theater program but those classes and their productions were filled with people who had Broadway dreams of either performing in or running productions. I had Latin American studies classes to take.”

“So as an adult now, you’re getting in touch with your theater kid side with Beale?”

“I’m always in touch with my theater kid side. I go see shows all the time. Sometimes alone, sometimes with other people. Eric and I saw “The Book of Mormon” at the Pantages in the spring. It was great.”

“No. You had classes to take, I had Marines to lead.”

She tries to support them with trying to keep their powers hidden. When her husband gets into trouble she goes to find him and attempts to leave her children behind to keep them safe. When Helen has the chance to help the movement to allow supers to come out of hiding so her children don't have to live in the shadows she jumps at the opportunity.

Maria Von Trapp (Stepmother of Liesel, Friedrich, Kurt, Brigitta, Marta, Louisa + Gretl): Highly empathetic and caring and brave. Saw how unhappy and regimented the Von Trapp's children's lives were and endevoured to make them happier even if it meant upsetting their father. Supported Liesel with her first brothen heart. Helped to make sure they got out of Austria and to Switzerland before her husband was conscripted and war could come to them so they would all be safe.

The two older Mazur siblings were football mad, the two of them chasing after a ball from the second they could manage more than a slow, stumbly walk. Noa was not the same – when she was born, her oldest brother was six and her sister was five, they’d already established themselves as football fanatics, their parents pushing the two of them to follow in their father’s broad footsteps.

She found a love of music young, then a love of acting following that - by five, she would put on little performances for their mother after school, making up songs and dances and skits involving her toys.

Deciding to invest in their youngest child’s interests, Fil and Bethany put her into every drama club, every extra curricular that they could, harnessing her skills and attending all the shows they could manage. 

She got her first job at the age of five, playing Gretl Von Trapp on the West End’s revival of The Sound of Music, this was due to her burgeoning talent and her mother being incredibly pushy with the youngest Mazur, the run lasted 4 months. It wan’t long before she got her next lead role in Matilda the musical when she was seven. The next job came quickly, an advert for Arsenal this time, eight year old Noa had her first (and only) nepotism job. A small role in a CBBC show, some episodes when she was nine on Eastenders, before her next lead role in Matilda the musical when she was ten, then small BBC roles after that. 

When she was twelve, shortly after her Bat Mitzvah, she found out that a show she had been workshopping with David fucking Bowie was going ahead.. she had landed the role of The Girl in his musical Lazarus.. She got to work alongside the man himself, doing a run in New York before London.. It was amazing. She was deeply hurt by his loss, of course.

Years pass, she’s gone low-to-no-contact with their mother - this was due to her mother lashing out at the youngest Mazur for being a disappointment for not remaining at the top of her profession like their father. 

She’s recently graduated from LAMDA, where she spent a lot of her first year staring as the lead in 42nd street, the summer of her second year at edinburgh fringe getting rave reviews and now, she stars as Hodel in her and her brother’s favourite musical: Fiddler on the Roof. 

Noa is a star in her own right, she supports both West Ham and Richmond (that might be because of a few choice crushes she finds herself with) and lives with her big brother in his three storey South Ken abode. She’s very involved in football still and often finds rows of theatres being packed out with her brother and his Prem Friends.
