Whatâs Out This Week? 2/8
Why do we live somewhere where the air hurts our faces??
A Condition Called Love GN Vol 1 -Â Megumi Morino
A sweet new shojo romance manga from the creator of Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty! Hotaru is a 16-year-old high school first year who has always been ambivalent about love, preferring instead to have a lively life with her family and friends. So when she sees her schoolmate, Hananoi-kun, sitting in the snow after a messy, public breakup, she thinks nothing of offering to share her umbrella. But when he asks her out in the middle of her classroom the next day, she can't help but feel that her life is about to change in a big way!
A Home Without GN -Â Don Gaddis
Growing up in the Bible Belt of the 1980s as a creative, colorful, and sensitive young boy is hard enough, but it's especially hard for River. His hot-tempered father, Mitch Garrison, fights constantly with his wife Rosemary and resents his son's softer side. As River and his sisters come of age, they'll have no choice but to help their mother (and each other) survive a chaotic household. Searing autobiographical fiction drawn heavily from the childhood of Southern artist and writer Don Gaddis.
Akim Aliu Dreamer GN -Â Greg Anderson Elysee & Karen De la Vega
Akim Aliu - also known as "Dreamer" - is a Ukrainian-Nigerian-Canadian professional hockey player whose career took him all around the world and who experienced systemic racism at every turn. Dreamer tells Akim's incredible story, from being the only Black child in his Ukrainian community, to his family struggling to make ends meet while living in Toronto, to confronting the racist violence he often experienced both on and off the ice. This is a gut-wrenching and riveting graphic novel memoir that reminds us to never stop dreaming, and is sure to inspire young readers everywhere.
Clock Striker GN Vol 1 -Â Issaka Galadima
Cast dreams of being a SMITH, but no one in her small town ever realizes their dreams. Besides, these legendary warrior engineers haven't been seen in years and were never known for having female members. Fortunately, Cast meets one surviving member named Ms. Philomena Clock, who agrees to take her on as her apprentice, or striker.
The Extraordinary Part Book 1 HC -Â Jerome Mulot & Florent Ruppert
Renowned for their great conceptual and graphic originality, acclaimed French cartoonists Florent Ruppert and JĂ©rĂŽme Mulot have masterfully contributed an instant comics classic to the annals of science fiction.
This first book in a two-volume graphic novel series is set in a near-dystopian present, where mysterious creatures called "whols" coexist with humans since their sudden appearance a few years earlier. At first, they aroused curiosity and wonder, then their seemingly harmless presence became commonplace. Nineteen-year-old Orsay leads an uneventful life in the French countryside, until the day he gains extraordinary powers in his hands after an atypically aggressive encounter with a whol. On a trip to Paris in search of a cure, he meets and falls for Basma, a passionate activist for whols' rights. But Orsay isn't convinced that whols should be granted the same status as humans. Especially once Melek, another human with similar powers, embarks on a murderous rampage to avenge those she sees as her kin.
Harrower #1 (of 4) - Justin Jordan & Brahm Revel
There's nothing to fear in the quaint town of Harrow, New York-except, that is, for the Harrower. The children wish this boogeyman was just an urban legend, but this purveyor of puritanical vengeance against the unrighteous is very real, and there's no escape, because the Harrower seems unkillable, and spans generations, always returning... What secrets will Alice Young, a teenage girl obsessed with the Harrower, uncover, and will she be able to escape the pull of her morbid fixation? This deconstruction of the slasher genre is the fresh and terrifyingly grounded take is perfect for fans of Bone Orchard and The Closet!
Marry Me A Little GN -Â Robert Kirby
Marriage doesn't define a relationship. Unless you want it to. In Marry Me a Little, Rob Kirby recounts his experience of marrying his longtime partner, John, just after gay marriage was legalized in Minnesota in 2013, and two years before the Supreme Court decision in Obergefell v. Hodges made gay marriage the law of the land. This is a personal story-about Rob's ambivalence (if not antipathy) toward the institution of marriage, his loving relationship with John, and the life that they share together-set against the historical and political backdrop of shifting attitudes toward gay rights and the institution of marriage. With humor and candor, Rob relates how he and John navigated this changing landscape, how they planned and celebrated their wedding, and how they and others in the gay community are now facing the very real possibility of setbacks to marriage equality.
Monarch #1 -Â Rodney Barnes & Alex Lins A new tale of terror and high-stakes science fiction hits close to home! Growing up in the city of Compton is tough enough as it is, but as Travon has learned all too well, growing up as an orphan in the city of Compton with gang members hunting you down every day is even tougher. But all of that is about to change, because today is the day that aliens make first contact with Earth-and it only spells doom for life as we know it! Death, devastation, and mayhem-can a single teenage boy rise to the challenge and protect his surrogate family and friends...or will he die trying? From RODNEY BARNES, the star comics writer behind the Eisner-nominated series KILLADELPHIA and the writer/executive producer of HBO's Winning Time, and up-and-coming Marvel artist ALEX LINS comes a new tale of love, triumph, disaster, and defeat!
My Special One GN Vol 1 -Â Momoko Koda
After a mortifying rejection, Sahoko Wakaume has sworn off beautiful boys. But a chance meeting at her family's restaurant puts her in the sights of gorgeous J-pop star Kouta Kirigaya of the group Like Legend. Sahoko will need all her cynicism to defend herself against Kouta's tenderhearted and affectionate efforts to win her heart!
Open Bar TP -Â Eduardo Medeiros
Lenny and Beardo are two childhood friends with a lot of road behind them. When Beardo's deadbeat dad dies and leaves them his old bar, they make a go of it as business partners. Easy enough, right? Maybe not. Â Running a business in a low-traffic area of town isn't all it's cracked up to be, but luckily for the boys, the one-two punch of viral media attention when their neighbor gets crushed by a 747 engine that falls from the sky and a sorta suspect (but very potent) beer recipe they stumble into catch the public's imagination at just the right time. Things get even more complicated when Lenny's ex-girlfriend Amanda shows up again, pregnant. Can our two heroes weather the ravages of success any better than they dealt with being losers? Can Lenny level up and be a good dad? Can Beardo forgive his dead, absentee father? Will the general public run them out of town when they find out what was actually in that beer?
The Secret History Of Black Punk TP -Â Raeghan Buchanan
The Secret History of Black Punk is an illustrated roll-call for punk, post-punk, hardcore, no wave, and experimental bands from ground zero until now. A starting point for anyone curious, another reference for those who devour all genre-related things, or a cool artifact for them who already know.
Show-Ha Shoten! GN Vol 1 -Â Akinari Asakura & Takeshi Obata
Ever since he failed to make his crush laugh, shy Azemichi Shijima has secretly been studying the art of comedy. Meanwhile, his classmate Taiyo Higashikata has big dreams of being funny but no follow-through. When the two team up, they just might be able to create a wave of laughter that reaches to the heavens and propels them to the top of the comedy world!
Space Job #1 (of 4) -Â David Goodman & Alvaro Sarraseca
After five long years of soul-crushing servitude as a chef's assistant, Danny Sheridan is getting his dream job in space as First Officer aboard the SS George H.W. Bush. But on his first day he finds himself crashing back to reality. Nothing seems right, the crew is subpar . . . something's going on, and First Officer Danny Sheridan is going to get to the bottom of it or die trying.
Stranger Things: Tales From Hawkins #1 (of 4) -Â Jody Houser, Caio Filipe & Marc Aspinall
On the surface, Hawkins seems like the kind of town where nothing bad could ever happen, but in the fall of '83 it is anything but safe. When two friends head out into the woods with their rifles and a six-pack, the would-be hunters find themselves the prey of a nightmarish beast who has claimed the wilderness around town and everything inside it, including them.
Where Iâm Coming From GN - Barbara Brandon-Croft
From diets to day care to debt to dreaded encounters with everyday racism, no issue is off-limits. This remarkable and unapologetically funny career retrospective holds a mirror up to the ways society has changed and all the ways it hasn't. The magic in Where I'm Coming From is its ability to present an honest image of Black life without sacrificing Black joy, bolstered by unexpected one-liners eliciting much-needed laughter.

Not quite so hot on the heels of a successful debut issue, The Gentleman #2 continues writer Greg Anderson Elyseeâs macabre tale of occult detective Oliver Solomonâs latest case. Is this offering worth the longer than expected wait? [...]
Opening up with a flashback with a young Oliver and his father watching wrestling that is at turns both touching and tragic, we get ever more insight into Oliverâs world. One thing I found particularly poignant here is the interaction between father and son, in a world where stereotypes still run rampant, it is very refreshing to see a loving relationship play out between a Black father and his son, no matter how brief. This sets the stage masterfully for all to come after as adult Oliver must grapple with his destiny while continuing to investigate the case dropped on him in the first issue.
Massimialiano Veltriâs art continues to serve as a beautiful compliment to Elyseeâs story, with heavy inks providing a dark and moody feel tailor-made for a macabre horror story. While the colors continue to be masterfully done by issue oneâs Pagnotta the lettering here is done by the one new addition to the creative team with Marco Del Verde replacing Micah Myers with little to no drop off in completely an exquisitely beautiful package. Despite the wait, The Gentleman #2 is a great book that is well worth checking out to support the creators!

The Gentleman #1
The Gentleman #1 SFC Comics/Evoluzione Publishing 2018 Written by Greg Anderson ElysĂ©e Illustrated by Massimiliano Veltri Coloured by Marco Pagnotta Letttered by Micah Myers   The Gentleman finds himself drawn to Espere St. LanmĂ©, mysterious and alluring, seeking help and protection from a being of possibly supernatural origins. Unfortunately to protect her, Oliver must succumb to his special abilities, a hereditary curse that uses his body as a key and vessel to the Void, an ancient evil with the means to destroy all life as we know.   I have been a fan of Evoluzione for a while now and I do so love when they send me something as completely unexpected, thrilling, engrossing and amazingly diverse. I doth my cap to Greg Anderson ElysĂ©e here for the way that this is written. I found myself engrossed in the story very quickly and as the layers of Ollie and his life are peeled like a Bloomin' Onion we begin to glimpse how incredibly complicate this man truly is. For a debut issue this rocks it with it mmhmm out man let me tell ya. So totally, utterly and completely captivating in ways you have to discover for yourself to truly appreciate. Also when I said diversity I meant it, sexuality is fluid and undefinable and the relationship Ollie has with Ralphie well to discover more you must pick up the book.   The way that this is being told is extremely nice to see. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exquisitely well. I like how we see this being told and how natural the events flow together and into one another so that it just feels like how you live your life. The character development is interesting to me and it fascinates me that we learn about Ollie through others and his actions rather than him revealing anything. Though Simone Simon is the real star and scene stealer. The pacing is phenomenal and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how all of this creates the books ebb & flow.   I love not knowing what to expect when I read a book. It is why I try to keep my books as spoiler free as I possibly can. I talk about my experience reading the book and highlight things as seen through my sometimes overly critical eye and I gotta tell ya there isn't one thing about this book that isn't damn near perfect.   The interiors here are really rather gorgeously rendered. The linework is exceptional and how we see the varying weights AND various techniques being utilised to bring us this level and quality of attention to detail blows my mind. I have been reviewing old school comics recently and the techniques we see here are utilised then but with merged with today's newer style of comic art so the experience is truly unique in a visual sense. The way that we see backgrounds and the importance they play in the story as well as within the composition of the panels to provide depth perception, scale and that overall sense of size and scope for the story is amazing. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this masterful eye for storytelling. The colour work we see is exquisite as well.. the way that we see the various hues and tones within colours and how they create the shading, highlights and shadow work is beautifully rendered. That a lot of this is in the dark and the colours are dark and muted and yet still retain all this depth and dimension is expertly rendered. â   If you couldn't tell by now this is one of those rare books that comes along once every so often that proves no matter how long you've been reading comics there are still surprises out there and you just have to find them. I cannot stress enough that companies such as Evoluzione are home to some of the best storytelling there is to offer. Â

For Us By Us: Greg Anderson-Elysee On Creating Is'nana The Were-Spider And African Comics
For Us By Us: Greg Anderson-Elysee On Creating Isânana The Were-Spider And African Comics
Wouldnât it be cool if Ananse, the mighty trickster god of Ashanti folklore was turned into a comic book hero? Cooler still if he was in a pickle and needed saving by one of his offspring; possibly Ntekumah or Anansewa? Or perhaps, a fictional Isânana created by Greg Anderson-Elysee? (The second volume of is presently on Kickstarter and needs your support)

Writer: Greg Anderson Elysee / Artist: Antonello Cosentino / Evoluzione Publishing
You see, for me, one of the most important parts of any sci-fi is the world-building and the characters. What does your vision of the far future look like? Itâs got aliens? Cool, cool. Space pirates? Okay, dope. Iâm digging that. A cast of mostly black and other characters of color, all unique from one another, embroiled in a mystery and the beginnings of an epic space adventure. Oh, yes. Iâll have some of that.
Marassa by Greg Elysee and Antonello Cosentino sets up a universe full of badass space pirates, unique futuristic technology, and humans coexisting with all manner of aliens. Itâs pretty much your standard affair when it comes to sci-fi tropes. However, what sets it apart is its cast of mostly POC characters and the tone it brings to the genre. From the characters to the setting and plot, everything just feels different.
The way characters talk, the crazy wooden technology, the worlds we see and even the designs of the aliens feel inspired by a touch of black culture. Itâs not exactly revolutionary when it comes to sci-fi but there is enough style held together by a strong plot to keep us wanting more. If the opening issues are anything to go by, Marassa does everything right, making it the start of a great black space opera.
The story follows twins Mara and her brother, Sa. Mara is a former pirate, living the life of luxury in what I can only describe as futuristic space Wakanda with her husband, the alien prince, her mother-in-law, the queen, and her two sons. Meanwhile, her brother Sa is a space pirate, known to be troublesome, confident and for others, somewhat annoying. Riding the cosmos with Sa is his âsonâ Petit, an adorable humanoid and childlike wooden droid who has a few secrets of his own.

Hello. This is a pin-up of Medusa from the Modern Mythology Anthology, currently on Kickstarter. Consider backing is here. Mythology is timeless. We've been telling the same stories for thousands of years because they speak to us in a way that no other stories can.
This Kickstarter is for a 160+ page softcover book featuring 17 stories by 29 talented creators, plus a collection of incredible pinups by additional independent comic book artists. It is also packed full of facts about the myths in the book including information about the cultures, histories, and storytelling traditions they come from.
Creators like Greg Anderson Elysee, Angela Oddling, Noah Mease, and many more (including me) tell stories that range from somber and beautiful to lighthearted and sad. The stories are inspired by hero myths from all around the world, from ancient Mesopotamia to ancient Greece, and everything in between.

On Kickstarter: Comics and Graphic Novels
There are two fantastic comics projects on Kickstarter right now that we thought our readers might be interested in. Theyâre both already funded, so at this point, youâd just be getting in on the sweet rewards (and possibly helping them reach some stretch goals).
The first is for the first issue of The Gentleman, which revolves around an investigator looking into a Lovecraftian horror. This comic is from the creator of Isânana: The Werespider, which we mentioned previously. So if youâre also a fan of Greg Anderson Elyseeâs work, you should definitely check out the Kickstarter for The Gentleman. This one ends tomorrow (May 31), so be sure to get over there quickly!
The other project is a graphic novel for the comic Aceblade by Danny J. Quick. This one offers more traditional comic book flavor, with heroes and villains, but also promises a character who grows and changes over time, rather than stagnating. You can check out the Kickstarter for Aceblade here! This one ends Friday, June 1st, so youâll want to make a decision quickly on it as well!

Holberg knew that the satirical content of the novel would cause an uproar in Denmark-Norway, so the book was first published in Germany, in Latin. He thus got a broader audience than he would have gotten in his homeland. The novel made him widely acclaimed across Europe. Danish, German, French, and Dutch translations were also published in 1741.
The book is significant in the history of science fiction, being one of the first science-fiction novels in history along with:
Johannes Kepler's Somnium (The Dream, 1634),
Cyrano de Bergerac's Comical History of the States and Empires of the Moon (1656),
