Grateful Dead Co-founder and Bassist Phil Lesh Dies at 84

Phil Lesh, the co-founder and former bassist of the Grateful Dead has died at age 84.

Lesh “passed peacefully” the morning of Oct. 25, his family said.

“He was surrounded by his family and full of love,” they said in a statement. “Phil brought immense joy to everyone around him and leaves behind a legacy of music and love.”

“Rest in peace, Phil Lesh,” Tinsley Ellis said. “A very sad day indeed.”

No cause was given, but Lesh had a liver transplant in 1998 and survived cancer and a couple of bouts with COVID-19.

“Phil Lesh - rest in peace,” said String Cheese Incident’s Jason Hann. “Wow, what a powerful musical influence on our community. Godspeed.”

Big Shrimp echoed Hann, writing on social media: “Without Phil Lesh there would be no Big Shrimp. Rest easy Phil, thank you for the music.”

The Empire State Building will be aglow in tie-dye in Lesh’s honor tonight.

“Phil was the big brother I never had,” former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten said.

“Sixty-three years ago he introduced me to his friend Jerry Garcia. Too many things to say, memories, adventures. Maybe in a day or so, as the numbness abates.”

Lesh joined the Warlocks in 1965, just before they changed their name to the Grateful Dead. He stayed with the group until it disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia’s death.

“I will never forget Phil and his impact on my life and music,” Greensky Bluegrass’ Dave Bruzza said.

Though he didn’t compose as much as Garcia and Bob Weir, Lesh’s “Box of Rain” and “Unbroken Chain” were among the Dead’s most-revered songs.

“I will sing ‘Box of Rain’ tonight in Ann Arbor,” Steve Poltz said on social media. “Phil Lesh, RIP.”

Post-’95, Lesh toured with his revolving band of Friends, co-founded Furthur with Weir and played with his former bandmates in the Others Ones and the Dead.

“My life would be completely different without Phil Lesh,” Eric Krasno said in a statement.

“Millions of others would say the same. He taught me and many other musical Friends that it was way more important to move together than to try to shine on our own. When we are all in sync together anything is possible. … Thank you, Phil, for bringing us all together, and thank you for endlessly sharing your gift and letting us tag along.”

The so-called Core Four - Lesh, Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart - last shared a stage in 2015 as Fare Thee Well.

“Thanks for the music, Phil,” Hyryder said. “Our love will not fade away.”

Winter Tour 2024: Greensky Bluegrass w/ Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel @ The Eastern

Greensky Bluegrass is a five-piece jamgrass band from Kalamazoo, MI that was formed in 2000 when Paul Hoffman, Dave Bruzza, and Michael Arlen Bont first played together and then decided to take this music venture even further. Currently, the band consists of Dave Bruzza (guitar/vocals), Michael Arlen Bont (banjo/vocals), Anders Beck (dobro), Mike Devol (bass/vocals), and Paul Hoffman (mandolin/vocals). Greensky Bluegrass has released six (6) LPs and eleven (11) live albums, their most recent LP is entitled Stress Dreams (released January 21, 2022). Greensky Bluegrass announced their Winter Tour 2024 on October 30th, 2023, with special guests Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel, Melt, Molly Tuttle, The High Hawks, and Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. For this tour date at The Eastern in Atlanta, Greensky Bluegrass brought Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel out to warm up the crowd.

Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel was a superb choice to start the night off at The Eastern. Duane Betts, who is a co-founding member of the Allman Betts Band and son of Allman Brothers Band member and co-founder Dickey Betts, was ready to rock the crowd with his band Palmetto Motel. Betts’ musical pedigree comes from a long line of brilliant musicians that should not be overlooked. Named after the late Duane Allman, Duane started learning how to play music at an early age and continued to hone his craft. At the age of 16, Duane performed with the Allman Brothers band on two occasions, most notably performing with them during their Woodstock ’94 music festival set.

Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel performed a soulful and passionate set that included a very special guest for two incredible songs: “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’” and “Blue Sky” (Allman Brothers Band cover). Lamar Williams, Jr., the son of Allman Brothers band member Lamar Williams, provided some extra special love by performing these two songs with Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel. Most of the songs from this evening’s set are from Duane’s latest album, Wild & Precious Life, which also features Marcus King, Derek Trucks, and Nicki Bluhm to name a few.

After a brief intermission, Greensky Bluegrass came on stage to thunderous applause from just about a sold-out crowd at The Eastern. Starting the night with “Just to Lie” and “Hold On” back-to-back set my night off in the right direction. It was fun getting to finally see Greensky Bluegrass perform in a non-festival setting with an extended setlist with some deeper cuts. I could see smiles and people dancing all night to this set as Greensky Bluegrass gave the people what they wanted, which was a memorable evening full of their music. The vibe from this night was everything!

With Paul Hoffman on Vocal Rest, Greensky Bluegrass Cancels Gigs

- “I’m seeking help and resting so that I can sing again as soon as possible,” mandolinist says

Greensky Bluegrass canceled five shows as mandolinist Paul Hoffman rests his voice.

“I’m seeking help and resting so that I can sing again as soon as possible,” Hoffman said of the voice injury that led doctors to tell him to “remain on vocal rest.”

Refunds will be issued for concerts scheduled for Sept. 18-22 in Delaware, Tennessee, North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia.

The band hopes to return Oct. 4 and 5 for dates at San Francisco’s Fillmore and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival.

“I love to sing for you and will do everything I can to heal and return to the stage very soon,” Hoffman said.

Wikipedia: Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Like mainstream country music, it largely developed out of old-time music, though in contrast to country, it is traditionally played exclusively on acoustic instruments and also kept its roots in traditional English, Scottish and Irish ballads and dance tunes, as well as incorporating blues and jazz. It was further developed by musicians who played with Monroe, including 5-string banjo player Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt. Bill Monroe once described bluegrass music as, "It's a part of Methodist, Holiness and Baptist traditions. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound."
