You're Hal Jordan.
Your whole life has been nosediving into a steady decline, but no one seems to notice. You hardly notice yourself, at first.
But then when you hit the accelerator you start to see the truth, and as much as you try to hit the breaks next, everything keeps coming at you faster.
Glory days, they passed you by. You grip onto the steering wheel but it's not answering to you. There was a sign, back then, and now you don't know if you can blame it or if everything is your fault.
When what you've been devoting yourself to for more than half of your life seems to only harbor disappointment, is there anyone but yourself to blame?
Don't rock the boat, they tell you. We were never friends, is a conclusion. I don't need patronizing, you think. I miss you, is what you don't say, not even to yourself.
And then in this steady decline you find that there is still more that you can lose. Your hands and will weren't enough to make it stop. You weren't enough.
Around you, it seems as though everyone is turning their backs on you. No one wants to deal with the mess and, consequently, with you. There are brand new sunny days everywhere but in the crater you're knees deep in.
There are no living beings left here to enjoy a sunny day.
You're Hal Jordan.
You turn around and bite the hand that gave you scraps, starving you in a way it took you too long to notice. Your grief is so big, so great, it doesn't fit within your body and least of all within your mind.
When you snap, you're a monster. There is blood on your hands. You kill your darlings, you kill your mentors, you kill the self you've always been, pummel it to the ground until good old Hal Jordan is nothing but dust.
Your grief is so big that is has turned to soul crushing anger.
You dive into the green, green, green, green. You don't come back twisted.
Another you comes back. A new you. The one from the past died alongside your city.
You're Hal Jordan.
You want to rewrite history. You always wanted to make the universe a better place.
Now you have the power to do it.

The evil done to me has won the day. I understand too well the dreadful act I'm going to commit, but my judgment can't check my anger, and that incites the greatest evils human beings do.

I'm thinking about all the major events Jason had missed when he was dead/away training with Talia between the end of ADITF and UTRH and I think that there is an endless oppotinity for comedy, like:
Kyle: yeah so like, after Doomsday killed Superman one of the fake Supermen blew up Coast City which is how Hal ended up gong crazy and trying to kill the time stream.
Jason, who missed out on the entire 90s: I'm sorry, what??

Consider: an AU where, instead of going to boot camp on Oa or being mentored by a senior member of the Corps, the only "training" that Green Lanterns get is being able to summon constructs of the previous bearers of their rings
The "ghost" of Starkaðr explains it to Abin Sur this way: when your constructs are shaped by your imagination, you're putting a bit of yourself into the ring every time you use it. And over time, your mind, your memories, your personality all become etched into the ring. Even after you're dead and gone, a semblance of you still exists within it.
The constructs have the personalities and memories of the previous Green Lanterns of the sector, so they possess invaluable knowledge of the planets and races they once protected. Knowledge that they share with their successors so they can be prepared for anything their sector can throw at them. The constructs teach the new Green Lanterns how to use the ring to their fullest potential, advise them on diplomatic relations for various species, and warn them of old enemies who might return someday.
Even those who fell to darkness and broke their oath are part of the ring. Katma Tui hates that Thaal Sinestro can haunt her still, tries to ignore his advice and wishes her will was strong enough to banish his specter the way he was able to suppress his predecessors when they spoke out against what he did to Korugar.
In a pinch, the constructs can even fight for the newest wearer of the ring, not just guiding them but also protecting them while they learn the ropes. Hal Jordan only lives to become the greatest of the Corps because of the countless times Abin Sur reached out from beyond the grave to save him. As the rookie Green Lantern becomes a veteran, this becomes less necessary and the constructs of their predecessors settle into more passive roles, only coming out to fight in the direst of circumstances.
These power rings are more than just tools or weapons. They're a living lineage of heroes that spans centuries. And when a Green Lantern dies, they find peace in knowing that some part of them will live on, joining the ranks of those that have come before them, ready to pass on their wisdom and strength to the ones who will come after. This then, is what gave Kim Tran the courage to finally let go, knowing that Tai will always have his grandmother watching over him.

Jordan loved the Coast City he knew-- and soon its destruction he'll seek to undo. To blot out this, his darkest hour, he knows that he will need more power. Thus the madness of grief will leave its scars in a swath of destruction he'll cut 'cross the stars.

At any given moment the back of my brain is going there is a hole in the ground 12 miles in diameter roughly it's a very big hole but it's not the size of the hole in hal Jordans life not by far for you see coast city is where he grew up it's where he worshipped at the shrine called father it's where he first knew love it's the place that first began to shape him as a man but now it's just a hole

I was struck by the way the gutter cuts off Parallax!Hal's leg in these panels. Like, for one, it's an economic way of using one pose to indicate both time and movement in sequence, but it also reminded me of a bit from the Tom King run on Omega Men/Kyle Rayner--

Hal Jordan is locked into the narrative, he has seemingly unlimited power, but he is flying away from us, the reader.

its so interesting to think about how gls travel through space because presumably oa is hundreds of light years away, right? (because each sector consists of hundreds of planets) but they seem to get there in a matter of minutes, so they can probably go faster than the speed of light. but you know what else you can do when you break the light barrier? time travel. but we never actually see them time travel, so whats up with that? is there a limitation put in place by the guardians, or did no gl think further ahead than 'WOAH this is pretty fast'

Between Injustice Superman and Emerald Twilight Parallax, I’m starting to think that being known as the guardian of a specific city is just asking for trouble.
