okay, so. i have loved pjo since i was 12 and this can definitely be explained also by the fact percy is so freaking hot. this days i was thinking about our boy and just have to share some of the stuff i thought about him in all this years. here we go with some headcanons of bf percy and percy in general;;

• he secretly is zodiac guy. like, in front of his friends or any public conversation he will deny it. but if you're into it, and just says something like "our zodiact signs are compatible!" he'll be happy about it and feel like he's part of something magical, you know? like he's known all along that you're supposed to be together.

• talking about interests: he definitely will listen with heart eyes whatever you talk about. books? shows? basketball or another sport? celebrities drama? taylor swift folklore's love triangle? he's here for it. laying on his bed with you sitting by his side telling him about it, and he's just staring at your beautiful eyes and playing with your hair

• he also love movies. he has an letterboxd account which he is religiously active on. also, he give extra stars to the movies you watch togheter just because he is on a good mood.

• btw, when he's calling you to watch a movie, it is to watch a movie. boy take the movies thing really serious.

• he will be watching barbie AND oppenheimer. and he will take you to both.

• percy can't sleep without being tangled with you. he's an huge touchy guy, bear hugs, forehead kisses, hands on your waist, head laying down on your chest. he just loves the feeling of your body with him

• bro is an biology princess. is the only thing he really found interesting. he loves nature, the sea, the animals.... everybody knows he's going to do marine biology. he's not an working-on-office-all-day type of person so 99% of chance of him working saving marine animals on an research group.

• his instagram profile would totally be about animals he saved. him just doing ✌️🤘👉👍with some type of turtle or an aquarium of clown fishes

• you gave him different marine stuffed animals and he keeps it on his shelf, right on the side of a picture of you and him on a beach day.

• as soon as he gets money, he will take you to a summer on greece.

• also, kind jealous. okay, im trying to be nice with him, he's very very jealousy guy. not because he doesn't trust you or your love for him, but because he doesn't trust other people. at least, thats what he says everytime he sees this one friend of yours

• percy is a tattoo guy. he will have symbols, greek words, abstract stuff, strong animals.... and your initials on his chest once he knows for sure you're here to stay.

• i saw that jeremy allen white keeps a letter of his wife with him to read when he's missing home and i just can't get it out of my mind. percy will totaly take a small peace of paper with something you wrote to him when he's traveling to research or smth and read it before going to sleep 😫😫😫

One of the most loved groups of people, the justice league walked through the city like ghosts. They were used to stairs and whispers, but usually of worship and maybe small insults but not like this. Could feel the distain in the air, like the city itself was trying to strangle them.

A tall blonde teen in a varsity jacket screamed at them to leave, that they weren’t wanted, but with much more explicit language.

Flash tried to make a joke, and the resulting glare from the rest of the league could have killed him on the spot, and several of the residents through things at him after they heard him.

They walked up to the building that held mayor’s office. Batman’s face was unreadable, unlike Superman’s whose expression told all his feelings of worry.

In the building they heard several voices, on of which matched phantom, ridiculing the mayor. Who just kept sighing in utter annoyance.

Wonder Woman opened the door to the office to be met with a comedic scene. Phantom floating in one corner of the room flipping of the mayor, who was also flipping him off in return. A goth girl with vine tattoos trailing from her wrist up her arms was slipping some papers onto the table, with the title mandatory vegan in bold letters while the mayor was distracted. two boys one with a tattoo around his eye similar to the eye of Ra, the other had on a shirt that said “I know all your secret identities, don’t test me” both sitting on beanbags playing a video game that was projected on of the walls of the office. one girl with beautiful curly hair was coming through the window arms filled with take out bags, a couple from a Chinese restaurant and the others a fast food place. A woman with red hair was helping her in, holding a tray full of drinks.

All of them turned their heads in unison, phantom and the two tattooed individuals eyes glowing green. the mayor and the redheaded woman’s glowed green.

The window person finished coming through, and set the bags down on the mayor’s desk next to the drinks. The pulled a toxic green knife from behind her back, the redhead woman got into a defensive position her cheeks torn open so she could her hundreds of teeth, razor sharp. The mayor leaned forward in his chair, placing a hand on his desk, mouth turned up in a grin, showing of his sharp canines.

The red headed boy quickly moved to the back of the room, while his video game partner stood up, holes appearing on his body, one of his eyes rolling back into his head leaving another hole, all dripping with sand. The goth woman slowly grew liken and moss in her shoulders, it slowly crawled up one side of her face, she opened her mouth and vines sprung from it, wrapping around her head ripping her skin a flower came out replacing her face.

Phantom was the worst, he grew into a vaguely human shape thousands of mouths opened up on his body, some in other places around the room.

Phantom asked in a distorted voice “ were our warnings not enough for you?”

Batman spoke up “we came here to” but he was interrupted.

The sand being spoke this time. Angerly “ to gravel at our feet for forgiveness, to beg in a futile attempt to win back fame?”

Batman responded again “no, we are here” but he was interrupted again this time by the flower woman

“Without our permission, without the permission of the public, you governed by none.” The flower petals began to pulse “ you who could be saving people, come here to plead like dogs praying for table scraps” she yelled.

“We are here to talk” Batman finally got to say.

The redheaded boy responded this time. “ Bruce Wayne, these actions are unbecoming of you”

The entire justice league was taken aback. “Don’t be surprised” the redheaded woman said “you and your kin’s bodies may be living, but you belong to death the same as us”

“Let’s hear them out” the mayor said “after that you can end them in anyway you wish” he was bluffing of course, none of the heroes on team phantom would ever kill someone, but the justice league didn’t need to know that.

The curly haired woman spoke “ so, if you want to talk then talk”

Superman answered this time “ we never got your messages, we only found them while cleaning out the servers”

What sounded like every voice ever heard replied “what do you mean” the voice, voices? Sounded surprised.

“Exactly that” Wonder Woman answered.

“Someone hacked into our system and deliberately hid all communications from amity” the flash continued

Phantom appeared behind Batman. Intangible hand going into his throat and wrapping around his trachea “if you are lying, I will destroy each of your families”

Phantom floated through Batman to get back in front. In the blink of an eye everyone was back to normal.

“Tell us about this breach” the mayor said crossing his arms. “ so we can take care of it”

A lot of owl tattoos I believe were influenced by my Athena's Owl illustration from years ago (first image) which is based on the ancient Greek tetradrachm. The "ΑΘΕ" letters are Alpha, Theta, Epsilon, representing Athens.

Do any of the freelancers have tattoos? Did any of them get tattoos while drunk?

This one is actually really good! Most of the Freelancers that obtained an A.I. got the greek letter tattooed. It would have circuit type lines branching from the symbol (just like how it does with the A.I. Implant chip.) Wyoming chickened out. He quoted “I Shall not have that rechet symbol printed upon my skin!” His words, not mine.

The A.I.s all saw the tattoos as respect. Well.. most of em. Sigma saw Maines Tattoo as a tag. Made him feel more in control.

The Mark of Athena except, instead of it being a coin given to Annabeth by Athena/Minerva, it’s a tattoo burned onto her forearm. Hear me out.

The tattoo has a tribal design of an owl, an olive branch, and the Greek letters A.Θ.E on it. And it's carved and burnt onto her skin. It glows red when Annabeth’s alone on her quest, and it would slightly hurt as the red glow would also be burning on her skin. It would look like a regular tattoo on her arm when it’s not glowing.

Their encounter would’ve been like:

Athena grabbed Annabeth’s right arm and dugged her nails onto them causing a burning sensation surging through her arm. “Follow the Mark of Athena,” She said. “Avenge me.”

“Mom…” Annabeth winced in pain as Athena’s nails dugged deeper into her skin. “What are you talking about? What mark?”

Then she saw the mark Athena meant. Her mother was placing the mark on her. On her skin, she saw a drawing of an owl, an olive branch and the greek letters, A.Θ.E. It looked like it was carved and burnt onto her skin.

“Avenge me or leave me.” Athena had said.

Annabeth had to pull herself from her mother’s grasp and ran without looking back.

She had tried scrubbing and washing it off, but to no avail. And ever since that day with Athena/Minerva at Grand Central, she only wore long-sleeved shirts to hide the mark on her forearm, as it would only remind her of her last encounter with her mother.

She didn’t tell anyone about it. Not the Head Counselors, or her siblings, not Jason, Piper, and Leo－her crewmates in the Argo II before sailing for New Rome, and not even Chiron.

Annabeth tugged her shirt's sleeve when Ella the harpy recited the prophecy concerning the Mark of Athena fearing anyone will know about it. Wisdom’s daughter walks alone, the Mark of Athena burns through Rome…

She discovered that the mark on her arm glowed a fiery red while she was at Fort Sumter in Charleston. There was also a mark of Athena that glowed on the walls when she became trap inside a dark room with the mark burning spiders away.

No one else knew about it until Piper asked her what the Mark of Athena was while the seven of them were in a meeting in the Argo II's mess hall. She pulls out her sleeve and shows it to the rest of the seven. Some of them were fascinated by it to the point where Leo says it’s dope and I want one! Others, particularly Hazel and Percy recognizes that it looked like it was burnt on her skin.

After the 2nd Giant War, the tattoo faded and now permanently looked like a wine-stain birthmark after the Athena Parthenos was returned to the Greeks and placed on Half-Blood Hill.

Her Dad, Frederick freaked out when he saw the birthmark-esque tattoo, and her cousin, Magnus basically snorted and said, Your mom placed a mark on you? Oh, my gods, Couz, what did you do?

So, yeah, just a thought. 😊

I've had this waiting for like 500 years. Kept telling myself to do the art for it but I'm not gonna lie I simply do not feel like it 😔 I will probably just occasionally make art for it. I have 2 other art projects going on, so I'm gonna put all my drawing energy into that.

While the rest of the pack of ghouls were most likely hunting for their own food as it was around noon and lunch time, the quintessence was sitting across a desk in a cold office. The swivel chair he was in was far too small for him, made for a human twice as small. His tail was hung awkwardly on the arm rest that his thighs were pressed painfully against. Terzo, who was sitting on the other side of the desk, had his eyes narrowed and his head slightly tilted to the side as he studied the ghoul's uncomfortable position. 

“Ah, I am sorry. I do not have chairs for ghouls. You do not have to sit if you do not want to.” Terzo offered, pushing his hair back and motioning for the ghoul to stand next to his chair. The ghoul nodded, his eyes looking around the room for a moment as if he were making sure there were no witnesses before he took Terzo's offer. He began to stand, or tried to at least, but his legs were stuck between the arm rests. He only squirmed for a few seconds before completely giving up, propping his head up with his hand and elbow pressed to the arm rest. 

“Are you stuck?” Terzo laughed. The ghoul blushed furiously behind his mask, humiliated. 

“I'm fine. Let's just talk.” The ghoul spoke quietly, trying to hide his embarrassment. How he hated being the biggest ghoul in the ministry. There was nothing accommodated for an individual of his size. 

Terzo responded with another laugh. 

“Let me help you.” Terzo stood and moved towards the ghoul. The ghoul wanted to protest and insist that he was fine, but did not feel he was in the position to argue with his new papa. Before he even had the chance to debate, Terzo's smaller gloved hands were pressed against the armrests, holding the chair down. 

“Stand now.” Terzo commanded. 

The ghoul sighed in exasperation. He looked away from Terzo, grunting as he pulled upwards, struggling to escape before finally he popped out of the seat. It was a sudden release, causing Terzo to stumble back at the contact of their chests bumping into each other. The ghoul's large hands quickly sprung out to catch Terzo by his arms before he fell backwards. 

“Ah… You are certainly a big boy…” Terzo hummed. He felt extremely small in the hands of the ghoul. As he examined their current position, Terzo noticed a tattoo on the ghouls neck. 

“Thank you.” Terzo gently pulled himself out of the ghouls grasp. The ghoul's hands returned to behind his back, standing to the side of the desk instead of sitting. Terzo returned to his own chair, spinning it to face the ghoul. 

“What is that on your neck?”

The ghoul was immediately filled with annoyance. 

“It is just a tattoo.” He responded coldly. Terzo cocked his head to the side. 

“Hm. It is a symbol?”

“Yes.

“What is it?”

The ghoul sighed.

“It is just a letter of the Greek alphabet. Do you have any other questions?”

“What did I tell you about vagueness, ghoul? I do not like it.” Terzo scolded with a grin. “What is it?”

“It is the omega. Do you-”

“Ah!” Terzo interrupted, shaking a loose index finger at the ghoul. “I remember this. I thought that is what that was, but I am not Greek. So you are not the big guy, then, hm?”

“Yes I am.” The ghoul spoke in almost a hiss, clearly defensive. 

“You are Omega. Not Alpha.” Terzo smirked

“That doesn't mean anything.” 

“Are you arguing with me?”

The ghoul, who seemed to accept the name of ‘Omega’, immediately silenced himself. Though, Terzo did not express any true ill feelings, a grin on his face. He seemed to find Omega's frustration amusing. 

“So you are Omega, but Alpha is not… the alpha? I do not understand.”

“It is only relevant to our positions in the rituals,” Omega explained, biting back his frustration, “Alpha is our lead guitarist. I am the rhythm guitarist.”

“Mmm. Sister told me otherwise. Is she a liar?” Terzo asked. 

“...No.” Omega decided to stop arguing about it. He was definitely hoisted into the position as the pack leader, since he was physically the strongest, biggest, and handled interactions with the highest level of maturity and intellect. The others were not dumb per say, but they could not take a punishment the way Omega could if they did say something dumb. Given their conversation as of now, Omega's light debating had him already lined up for a beating. 

“Well, Omega ghoul, I only want to go over my expectations. Though I would prefer to speak to Alpha, you will do.” Terzo stared at Omega for a moment with a smartass look, waiting for a reaction. His expression fell to disappointment when he failed to provoke him. 

“My brother was a bit of a bitch, eh?”

Omega pulled his head back a bit, surprised by Terzo's bluntness. His brother was, in fact, a bit of a bitch. 

“I do not plan on dictating you.” Terzo continued, “I expect your unwavering loyalty to me and the ministry. Professionalism, respect. Your best work and effort. Reasonable, no?”

Omega nodded silently, taking a mental note of what to tell the pack. 

“And- And of course, don't destroy the place,” Terzo chuckled, “apart from that and your chores, I do not care what you do.”

Omega was still for a moment, waiting to see if Terzo would add on anything else. Terzo intertwined his fingers. 

“Do you have questions?” He asked. 

“No.” Omega responded, an unsure tone in his voice. 

“Oh, and tomorrow after service, I would like for you and your friends to stay. There are new uniforms for you. I hope they will be more comfortable,” Terzo clicked his tongue, his eyes moving to the right, “they are definitely more comfortable to look at, I will say. Make you look less poor.”

“Right.” Omega scoffed, rolling his own eyes. His hands slowly drifted to his sides. “I do not like wearing this.”

“I do not like you wearing that either, ghoul. Omega. What do you prefer?”

“Omega.”

“Then, Omega, stay after tomorrow before you go to your chores.”

“Yes, papa.”

“You can just call me Terzo.”

Omega did not like that. He did not plan on referring to him by his first name. It felt far too personal. Unprofessional. 

“You may leave now. Enjoy the rest of your day.” Terzo, dismissed, his attention shifting to a book that was sitting on his desk. Omega turned to leave, but stopped. 

“I have one question, actually.”

Terzo looked back up at him. 

“What would you like to know, ghoul?” 

Omega took a breath, avoiding eye contact. 

“I hope I do not anger you, but what would your response be if it were to happen?”

Terzo hummed, tapping a golden claw against his chin playfully as he hummed and leaned back in his chair. Omega was irritated by his lack of seriousness. 

“I suppose it depends. But do not worry. I will not harm you.” Terzo finally answered. 

“I thought you did not like vagueness?” Omega said with a tilt of his head, the corner of his lips cracking into a small smile under his balaclava. 

“You are witty. Why don't you show that more, yes?” Terzo grinned. “But, yes, vague. Vagueness. I do not like it. That does not mean I cannot be. I am ipocrita, I know.”

“I am too scared to argue with that.” Omega joked. 

“You should be! Good ghoul.” 

Terzo stood from his desk, patting Omega on the back and guiding him to the door. 

“I am busy now. I will see you and your friends tomorrow, yes? And we will replace those ugly rags.” 

Omega nodded, finally left the room and made his way down the hallway, his tail swaying close enough to the ground to swipe dirt across the floor.

From the Inquisitor to the Baptist: The Evolution of John Seed

When Far Cry 5 came out, on March 27, 2018, players got to finally meet John Seed “in person” and see his final design. That said, it’s still possible to stumble upon early versions of him in the game and its files.

All the sources and references indicated by the superscript numbers will be given in the last post.

Part 2: Physical appearance, clothes, and tattoos (Far Cry 5)

Here is John Seed, the Baptist, as he appears in Far Cry 5 most of the time:

His coat is now decorated with planes, but it still has scales on the buttons. He has a two-tone blue shirt, a vest (it seems, heavily inspired by a piece from the D&G Spring/Summer 2010 menswear collection²⁷), dark grey jeans with a brown belt and an “EG” belt buckle, dark grey, laced, probably leather boots, a watch, an Eden’s Gate earring, blue sunglasses (on his head), his bunker key around his neck, a SLOTH scar on his chest, and a lot of tattoos²⁸:

Among them, in addition to the ones previously mentioned in Part 1 (the letters and symbols on his fingers, the goat, the snake, the flames, the scales, and the angelic figure with the dove in the wreath), we find:

On his right arm,

a nautical star (can represent guidance) and diamonds/jewels (can represent beauty and power)

the number seven in tally marks (also tattooed on his left little finger), probably for the seven deadly sins

a fly (can represent determination)

a sword/dagger (can represent protection or sacrifice)

an anchor (can represent God and groundedness) with another snake and pair of scales

a crescent moon (can represent purity or transition, a new beginning)

a peacock feather (the peacock is used to symbolize Pride)

the word SLOTH crossed out

a flaming horseshoe, possibly to symbolize the Horsemen (and fire) of the Apocalypse.

On his left arm,

a revolver, maybe the last vestige of the gun he was holding in the first promotional pictures and in Absolution

an eagle, which looks like it’s about to catch the snake, maybe to symbolize Eden’s Gate (the cult used to be represented by an eagle, as seen in the early piece of concept art of the Seed family¹), “killing” sins (here, Envy)

an ax (can represent strength and fearlessness)

the plane pattern that is now also on his coat

a religious cross

a chair and the words “SIT DOWN & WE TALK”, most likely a reference to the fact he’s the Project’s Confessor

a holy figure with a sickle attached to their hand and what looks like sprigs of wheat, the latter probably symbolizing the Reaping and the fact John is in charge of it

another cross with “EG” in the middle, as well as the Greek letters alpha (A) and omega (ω), “the beginning and the end” in the Book of Revelation in the Bible

a bird, maybe a swallow (can represent freedom and resilience).

Most of his tattoos seem to be religious symbols, but depending on who you ask, tattoos can have very different, sometimes deeply personal meanings, so it’s difficult to know exactly what they’re supposed to represent. Some of the significations I’ve just mentioned in the list are very generic and can be found on many websites.

The crossed-out word SLOTH is particularly interesting to me because John has a similar scar on his chest, and “Acedia” (Sloth) is missing from the list tattooed on his left hand. It seems he really hates this sin²⁹…

But funnily enough, in the game, John doesn’t always look like this.

In the bedroom of the Holmes Residence, on Joseph’s Island, there are pictures of the Seed family on the wall, and John appears in two of them³⁰:

In the first one, he’s wearing his sunglasses, and his coat appears to have EG logos on it instead of planes. In the other picture, his coat might also be the “old” one, but it’s hard to tell.

In the family portrait, also visible in the Holmes Residence³¹, it’s his early character model (no glasses, no tattoos, “EG” pattern on the coat), the one we see in the Prima Games guide, who is in the picture. His siblings look slightly different as well.

In Dutch’s bunker, there also are pictures (and short descriptions) of the Father and his Heralds. Once again, it’s John’s early model who seems to be in the photo³².

In the “Power of Yes” poster, he’s wearing his sunglasses³²:

On the “We love you and we will take you” billboards³², John’s picture is a mixture of several designs. His coat is the final one, with planes, but his face appears to belong to his early model because his sunglasses are nowhere to be found and I think his beard looks slightly longer. He has the SLOTH scar and bunker key, but the letters on his fingers are S, G, and G for Sloth and Gluttony/Greed. The tattoo on his hand is hard to see, but it doesn’t seem to be the nautical star and diamonds.

In the menu, more specifically in the Journal, where missions are listed, we can once again see John’s early model (no glasses, no tattoos), like in this image that illustrates the mission “The Confession”³³:

I’ve previously mentioned an early version of the “You have been Marked” broadcast (in IGN’s video²¹), but an even earlier version of it can be seen in Far Cry Arcade. If you add the “Counter Cafeteria” (Far Cry 5 > Objects > Residential > Kitchen) to your map in the Arcade Editor, you can see this³⁴:

The Eden’s Gate cross that appears at the beginning is also a very early design, the one featured in what could be the first artwork of the Seed family¹.

A picture of John’s old 3D model was also in the deleted in-game encyclopedia (still partially available in the files)³⁵. His sunglasses, key, scar, and tattoos are missing, and he has the EG coat.

In the loading screens for the Holland Valley region, although John looks a little more realistic than his in-game model, his design appears to be the same³⁶:

As for his in-game portrait and character icon, they feature his final design as well:

But there also exists a very early version of this portrait in the files. John appears to be the character on the left, once again wearing sunglasses³⁷:

But surprisingly, the release of Far Cry 5 didn’t mark the end of the changes regarding John’s appearance. After the game came out, his model was slightly altered one last time.

If you ever took a close look at his shoes in the first few months that followed the release of Far Cry 5, you may have noticed that there was blood on them. This blood stain is also visible in the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” official artwork²³:

But when I looked at his shoes again in the Arcade Editor five months later, the blood was mysteriously gone…

I have no idea why it was removed, but I like that it was because John’s evolution, from the game’s earliest stages of development to its final version, was not just physical; his personality, methods, and morals were also modified. The blood disappearing from his shoes is a subtle and maybe meaningless change, but I think it perfectly illustrates how his violence was gradually toned down during the development of Far Cry 5.

Writing Advice: (fake?) Latin

not necessarily for writing, but general latin advice. I'm meaning Latin the language, not any other meanings here.

if you're making fake latin, maybe just use real latin.

google translate is pretty alright, actually, if you don't know latin

if you're set on dog latin, don't make it sound exactly the same

3 addendum: not all latin words end in 'um' or 'us'. they also end in 'a', 'ae', 'I', 'orum/arum' 'ibus' 'is' 'ibus' 'is' 'o' 'es' 'is'. this is a list for nouns.

verbs are important. you can maybe have an implied verb, but you do not want to. verbs have a variety of endings, depending on person, number and tense. I'm not getting into mood, because I can't be subjunctive about it, and it is imperative I opt out of indicating what moods are. (I don't feel like it)

common verb endings: '-o' (I do x), '-I' (I did x) '-imus' (we did x) '-te' (you[pl] do that [order]) variations on '-nt' (they do/did/have done/will do x)

please, please, if you are going to use latin as a base for magic words, do not do as She Who Must Not Be Named did and mix actual researched latin with pig latin. it's really annoying, and also not hard to pick up a latin-english dictionary.

MORE IMPORTANT: don't use greek letters. just don't. if you are going to get a tattoo of latin words with greek letters 1) don't do it, 2) if you're dead set on it make sure the greek letters say what you want them to say.

ɸ - this letter is not ever a replacement for I. it isn't. trust me. it makes a 'ph' sound.

⍴ - this looks like a p. it is not. it is an 'r' sound.

Σ - this is a capital letter. it is not an e. it just isn't. it is an 's' sound.

𝚲 - this is not an a. nor is Δ. they are 'L' and 'D' respectively.

𝜭 - this is 'th', not o

𝜞 - this is not L. it is 'g'

𝜰 - this is actually 'u', but pronounced more like 'y' so I guess you can use it.

yes this post is aimed at those bad tattoos of Veni Vidi Vici spelt with greek letters, and that one tattoo of a terrible translation of in the valley of the shadow of death that actually used 'of' when they should use the genitive instead.

365 Promises of God - Day 282 - There is Neither Greek nor Jew, Slave nor Free

Read: Colossians 3:1-11

Ever had to do one of those ‘compare and contrast’ papers in English? Well, I’ve loved to quote a verse very similar to the one for today, found in Paul’s letter to the Galatians:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Gal 3:28 NKJV)

I’ve liked the verse in Galatians, and never really noticed the differences with the verse found here in Colossians before. But let’s look at them now.

The verse in Colossians doesn’t mention male and female. It changes the order from Jew nor Greek to ‘Greek nor Jew’. He added ‘circumcision nor uncircumcision’. He adds Barbarian and Scythian. And instead of identifying all as one (promoting unity) it goes to a different focal point that Christ is ALL, and IN ALL. Pointing to sufficiency and identification. So, why are these differences THERE, and are they important? Well, the short answer is, of course they are.

Galatians was written early in Paul’s ministry, around AD 47, and was directed more toward the Jews in Galatia. Therefore, they were addressed first. Although Judaism treated women better than other faiths, they considered women little more than property. Thus, they needed to be instructed that Christ eliminates the gender gap, for all must come empty to be filled. And the Jews needed to be reminded that there was unity with the Gentiles in Christ.

Colossians was written from prison in Rome around AD 62, and was addressed primarily to the Greeks there, so they are named first. The Greeks had a better view of the equality of gender. There had arisen between the letters a teaching that the Greeks would need to keep the Law, at least to being circumcised, to enter heaven. And Paul had a hard time squashing that lie. The Barbarians were foreigners to Colossi, and the Greeks might have treated them with distrust. The Scythians were a conquered race from the East, whose dynasty was long over, and they doubtless were treated with contempt. The promise Paul was communicating in this truth was that all of those barriers are GONE!

We aren’t to treat others with distrust or contempt. Whether an employer or employee, a white collar or blue collar, whether that church member has tattoos or piercings or wears a suit and tie, we should love each other because Christ is IN ALL of us, and He must BE all TO us. Dear Christian, remember that these are your family.
