Types of Hardscaping Materials for Your Landscape
When was the last time your yard underwent a makeover? Often when we think of changing the landscaping, planting grass, trees, and shrubs comes to mind. Nonetheless, landscapes involve more than just the botanicals which make up the softscaping aspect.
Concrete
Right away, concrete comes to mind when envisioning landscape designs. However, your choices are no longer limited to the dull gray hue or the boring, flat slab. Concrete can be stained, stamped, texturized, or even mixed with other materials for a more dramatic look. Moreover, you can use concrete to create planters, basins, steps, and edging as well as for patios and walkways.
Brick
With some many shapes, sizes, and tones to choose from, brick remains a popular mainstay in hardscaping designs. Like concrete, brick is fairly low-maintenance and quite sturdy. From outdoor fireplaces to short, decorative walls, there are many ways you can integrate bricks into your outdoor living space. Plus, brick offers a creative twist for patio surfaces since you use the different shades to create different patterns.

Stone
Stone is another durable material that opens up numerous design possibilities. Natural stone, for example, gives you a broad spectrum of shapes, textures, and shades to work with. Its distinctive qualities allows for a more eclectic arrangement as well as popular styles like xeriscaping and zen gardens. On the other hand, flagstone offers a more symmetrical, structured look, especially when incorporated into walls or paving. Or in its natural state, flagstone is perfect for a rustic motif.
Loose Rock
Another popular hardscaping material that serves many purposes is loose rock and pebbles. Like flagstone and natural stone, you’ll find loose rock that comes in a broad array of earth tones which makes it a versatile addition to your landscaping. Some ideas for including loose rock and pebbles include pathways, borders, and rock beds for small ponds or fountains. Additionally, some gardeners fill shallow planters with pebbles to provide a colorful alternative to plants.
Pavers
As already mentioned, bricks and flat stones make excellent flooring for your patio, but pavers work just as well and are easy to replace. These pieces are fabricated from a mixture of coloring and concrete that’s poured into a mold. Installing pavers can be as complex as bricks, but you can also lay them over a bed of sand or gravel as long as the ground below has been thoroughly tamped and leveled. Or for a distinct mosaic look, you can use interlocking pavers to create almost any type of pattern.
Tile
Though this hardscaping material comes with a higher price tag than the others mentioned, tile lasts for decades and gives an elegant touch to any outdoor space. Similar to the indoor choices, you can select terracotta, ceramic, porcelain, or quarry tiles for the flooring of an outdoor kitchen or seating area. Tiles also make great accents on to concrete slabs.
So there you have our list of hardscaping materials. While some of these options can be installed as a weekend DIY project, you might enlist the advice and services of experts who can help you design the outdoor space of your dreams. The Rain could be Dancing
Rain hammers at the window. Like a shower of pebbles, it rattles its panes. It wakes them up, pulling them from their dreams and spitting them out into the grey morning. One look outside and she huffs and rolls over. Rhys wraps his arm over her, pulls her back to his chest.
“What’s wrong, darling?” His voice is barely above a whisper, still raspy from sleep.
“Rainy days are so depressing. You can’t go outside; you have to stay indoors where it’s stuffy and cramped. Everything feels so dark and dreary.” Her voice is defeated.
“Hmm.” He closes his eyes but continues to rub her arm. “I don’t know about that.”
Feyre turns her head, and he cracks one eye open in time to see the funny look she gives. He provides no explanation, just sits up and motions for her to follow him from bed. He pulls on a sweater over his t-shirt and untucks the duvet from beneath their mattress. Grabbing her hand, he leads her to the small balcony.
Together they sit, bundled in blankets and looking out at the city. They watch flowers in a hanging planter gather water, notice how the rain dances off of ledges, see people on the streets rush from cover to cover, eager to escape the weather. Grass becomes greener, puddles grow deeper, and the rain falls harder.
They spend hours watching the world unfold beneath the showers - there is no need to move when they are kept so warm by each other’s company.
He learns that the best way to stay warm is to hold her close.
She learns that rainy days don’t have to be sad.
***
In the night there is a snowy moon glowing behind the clouds. It is cool and wet, the world beneath dripping in liquid silver.
In the morning there is a golden sun electrifying the clouds. It gives them a silver lining - makes them softer, though everything below is gray and damp.
The rain runs through gutters, drips from awnings, gathers on leaves and soaks the ground around flowers. People stay indoors and simply observe the world outside.
They embrace it - the rhythm of the calm showers, the music of the running water. They let the sound lull them into a sense of security, dry and warm in their beds and without a worry in the world.
Two people in particular appreciate the gift of the rain; the peace provided by the light drizzle, an excuse to stay together all day. In their sleep he holds her tight, she wriggles closer until their hearts beat against each other and their breaths mingle.
She wakes early in the morning, eyes opening to be met with violet eyes and a sleepy smile.
He watches her settle. Sees her pull away from sleep and adjust to the world around her. He traces her features with feather touches, burning the image into his mind.
Honey brown hair lit up in the pale, gray glow.
Dark eyelashes brushing against rosy cheeks.
Delicate ears curving against wisps of silky hair.
They lay together for what feels like hours, stuck between the vast plains of rest - not quite awake and not quite asleep. She puts her cold feet against his warm ones, and he slides his hands underneath her shirt, coming to rest at the small of her back. Not to tease. Not to instigate. Simply to be.
The rain outside hums its approval.
And then, small hands and long, dark hair. A third body, this one smaller, clambers up to squeeze between them. Nestling between the safety of her parents. It is silent for a moment - both of them subconsciously settling around her, pulling her closer into their small world tucked between the sheets. It was natural. They fit together perfectly; made for each other.
But they hear a sniffle, and she shifts closer, burrowing deeper into the safe haven they offer between their arms.
“Is something wrong, baby?” Feyre whispers into the dimness, stroking her daughter’s hair and brushing her cheek.
“The rain feels sad. It’s like the world is crying.” Her eyes, still heavy with sleep, stare up from beneath the blanket, and even in the dark her parents can see the concern in them.
“I don’t think it’s sad, sweetheart.” Rhys pulls closer, banding his arms around both of his girls.
“Why not?” Her voice is still quiet and slurred from just waking.
He shakes his head and kisses her nose. “I think, for today, the rain is at peace. Hear how gentle it is? How soft? It sounds more like it’s singing, like it’s dancing ‘cause it’s happy.” When he looks at her, she pauses, then nods her head and nuzzles into her mother’s shoulder. He kisses the back of her head and Feyre’s cheek before trying to settle back into their nest of blankets.
“But it sounds so cold, like the clouds miss the sun.” She sits up all the way this time, duvet tumbling off her shoulders and pooling around her back as she looks at her father. With her eyebrows drawn and a frown on her face, she looks exactly like her mother.
Rhys looks at the two of them, sees Feyre holding their daughter, sees the similarities shared between the two people he loves most. It makes his heart ache with joy, with pure, undiluted contentment.
“Come with me, little one.” His voice is low. Not a whisper - just quiet. Wanting to nurture the stillness of the morning.
He scoops her up carefully. Her arms - still chubby with baby fat - wrap around his neck and he tucks a quilt around her. Feyre smiles knowingly and bundles herself in his sweater and a robe.
Downstairs now, Rhys steps onto their back porch, the one he and Feyre had painstakingly built together. They had spent days measuring and cutting and nailing and sanding, wanting to get it to perfection. He hadn’t understood why it was so important that they got it just right.
Now he knows.
The air is damp and cool, but not uncomfortable. Not muggy and not cold.
He tucks her closer, rubs her back as they sit on the bench.
She is safe in her dad’s arms, peering out from the blanket to observe her surroundings. Through the open windows, she can hear the kettle whistling, can feel the slight stubble on her father’s jaw when he presses kisses to her forehead, can see a mist rising above the ground where the rain hits.
They hear the drops landing on the grass, the creek further back on their property full and rushing. Wildlife is quiet now, but for a few birds chirping and an entire chorus of frogs, adding a melody to the rain’s steady beat.
“Listen, honey.” His voice is hushed. “Do you hear the frogs?”
Paying closer attention, leaning forward in her dad’s lap, and looking again towards the field, she listens to the croaks filling the air and echoing off the trees.
When her mother joins them - a steaming mug in each hand, the bitter scent of Rhys’s coffee and spicy tang of Feyre’s tea mixing - she crawls over. Half in her dad’s lap, half in her mom’s.
“Momma, listen to the frogs!”
“I know, sweetie. Do you know what they’re saying to you?” Feyre’s eyes, bright and twinkling, glide from her husband to their daughter.
“Frogs go ribbit, momma. Everyone knows.” She looks to her dad, shaking her head and rolling her eyes.
Yes. She was all Feyre.
“They’re warning you of the creek - saying it’s knee-deep, knee-deep.” Feyre drops her voice, mimicking the frogs. She beams when her daughter giggles.
They settle on the bench, leaning in towards each other, sharing heat in the soft chill of the morning.
Tea and coffee is refilled, another blanket is brought out. But still they sit quietly, untouched, and safe beneath the porch covering. Time slips away while they watch water dance off stones and pool on leaves. Beads gather in the center of flowers and the edges of petals - creating kaleidoscopes of light and color. Puddles gather in the small divots and valleys where the earth has been worn down.
Their voices are hushed when they speak, just a murmur beneath the rain. Her ear to his chest, she can feel the rumble as she speaks; her dad’s voice is a comfort. Her mother’s skin warm against her own, her paint-stained hands gentle as she absentmindedly rubs her small feet. She snuggles further into the blankets, chilled in the early morning but warmed by her parents embrace. She yawns, a quiet sound muffled by quilts.
She speaks up. “I think you’re right daddy. The rain is happy.”
Thin, downy lashes flutter shut, the muscles in her face relax. Her head turns in, chin tucking under and body curling up. Her breathing evens out and her parents watch her, watch the rain, watch each other.
Together they are whole. They listen to the showers pick up strength - a great crescendo in nature’s orchestra - and the quiet breathing of their daughter. Moments upon moments of rest, heads leaning together, and arms wrapped in a safe embrace.
They are as calm as the rain that dances around them.

— Chapter 41
After a good twenty minutes, Vivian had eventually reached the Living Quarters level of the Mesa Hub. And there, everything was calm too. The soft light of the long row of inlaid ceiling and a few, more decorative than practical, wall lights marked out the dark grey concrete walls of the hallway, and Vivian’s footfalls were muffled by the thick beige carpet. She walked past a corner, dressed with succulents proudly standing in their pebble-filled planter, but right after that, Vivian stopped dead in her tracks before leaping to hide behind the wall; in the hallway, in front of the doors to the first apartments in this employees’ area, a woman was standing perched on heels and squeezed into a small dress, as gray as the concrete walls, her brown hair pulled up in a bun at the back of her head.
And in her hands, she was holding a folded tablet in an elegant but somewhat stiff stance. She only seemed to be waiting and, for now, what was going the right way for Vivian was that she had her back to her.
What surprised her the most, though, was that she hadn’t come across anyone else before now. She had been discreet in the escalators, but she suspected that the security cams had been put back on! It seemed impossible that no-one would have caught sight of her on a screen in the control room, if the hallways and accesses were still monitored.
She only hoped that, dressed as she was, she could pass for a stray host, or one that would be following orders of some kind, since that seemed to be the new policy, here…
Since Vivian wasn't sure what to expect yet, even though all her colleagues were ridiculously cool about the whole thing, she didn't want to take any chances; still out of sight at the corner of the hallway, she drew her tablet out of her pocket. Unfolded, she turned it on and caught the host’s signal. It was a greeter named Daisy and the narrative she was following seemed to be a standard routine — attend personnel…
But now, Vivian wasn’t really in the mood to have a chat, and risk to have her presence immediately reported to whoever was at the wheel as soon she would have been greeted.
No need for backdoors or to follow winding paths in her code; the greeter hosts were raw, perfectly aware of their nature as hosts, and their limitations didn’t seem to have been lifted… Not for her, anyway.
In a few taps on the interface, she would order a sleep mode to this poor innocent Daisy. Vivian nibbled at her lip and stood up, folding her tablet back in simple display. Mouth closed, one hand clutching her kerchief to her throat, she took a slow breath before releasing it, then another as if she was about to take a dive. Then she walked with confidence down the hallway. Daisy noticed movement and turned to face her; she flashed her a beautiful smile.
"Welcome," she said, without a hint of accent and with a flawless delivery. "My name is…"
Vivian pressed on the ready tablet command and, right away, Daisy’s expression shut down along with her eyes to faint graciously. Hurrying her steps, Vivian caught her before she slumped and, teeth gritted to contain a gasp under the sharp pang that shot in her arm, she laid her down carefully on the carpet.
"Sorry, Daisy…" she whispered to her.
She stashed her tablet and took Daisy’s, not even needing to open it to notice that it was indeed the normal communication interface, with an empty call and message history. Vivian let out a brief, nervous sigh, heart pounding, and paused for a short moment before leaving the tablet in the greeter host’s hand. Then, with a nervous glance to the silent hallway around her, she stood up, and jogged to her apartment without turning back once.
At the door, Vivian took her tablet out again. She had left her room without her keys but, luckily, those double locks were convenient! And she swiped her folded screen in front of the NFC reader.
The lock clacked and, right away, Vivian rushed through the entrance, closing the wooden panel with the weight of her body. Even though she didn’t have anyone on her tail… none that she was aware of! But right now, she really needed to isolate, and think. Hand shaking, she turned the bolt above the low handle twice and let herself slide down against the door, breath shallow.
It was just an illusion but, for a delicious second, Vivian felt a bit safer. So, with a quivering breath, she found the strength to stand back up and make a few steps in her own space. And it was very strange for her to be back in here…
Everything was the way she had left it before leaving for the gala, a good week back; her usual pair of shoes was under her desk’s chair, her door’s keys were indeed there, beside her tablet’s docking station and her empty cereal bowl, the jacket matching the pants she had worn to the gala hadn’t moved from her bed redone in a hurry, and only one of the curtains was pulled in front of the thick glass window. She made a few more steps in her room with a strange bashfulness to rediscover this not so terrific landscape that still gave her vertigo; she was so high above the park while she had fought for her life in there and that, this very morning…
A shiver shook her and she wrapped her arms around herself. The pain brought her back to the harsh reality of her situation — she wasn’t done fighting! Vivian left her tablet on its dock to take Lawrence’s jacket off, leaving it with the other on her sheets. Then, she took off her boots with a real pleasure to stumble into the bathroom where she shed off the rest of her ruined clothes, hooking her gunbelt to her bathrobe’s hanger before arming herself with a pair of scissors from her drawer, and cut her bandage open.
The pain as much as the lukewarm water was making her shiver but once rid of her thick bandage, she set a better temperature and practically threw herself under the water.
Cleaned as much as her wound was, haflway wrapped in her bathrobe, Vivian was done examining her arm, the electrocauter ready in her other hand. The alcohol from her first aid kit had sent shots of pain flaring up to her wrist for a good five minutes now, but from what she could see through the tears, she could cauterize that now!
The wound pressed under a much more common gauze despite the one she still had in her leather pouch, Vivian recovered her gunbelt, dropping it on the bed where she sat as well. There, she pondered on the oncoming pain. Her braided hair was dripping on the terry cloth of her bathrobe and her shoulders, and she closed her eyes to breathe quietly, picking up her courage. The wound didn’t look too bad after this bath, she’d better not wait for it to start bleeding again!
Determined, Vivian bit into the pillows pressed against her chest, the wrist of her outstretched arm clamped between her knees, and she turned the cauter on, breath ragged. The tip barely touched her wound that she gasped and yelped in pain, like from a cigarette burn.
Now that she had an inkling of how much punishment she was going to take, Vivian held her breath and brought the cauter closer again. Even prepared, it didn’t hurt any less. Not one bit, in fact.
Shaking and tearing up, her cries were muffled in the pillow she bit down harder as she tried to keep her right hand steady on the cauter along her wound. It wasn’t even that long, though! But then, she really felt like it was going on forever…
When, finally, the whole cut was closed in an ugly, still angry-looking red swelling, Vivian let out a sob of relief. It was still hurting like a bitch but at least, it was closed! And, for what she knew, she hadn’t done such a bad job. Not enough to show off to her colleagues from Livestock, probably… but they didn’t need to know what she had been through, out there.
Suddenly, Vivian felt very weak and let herself flop on the side. Never had her bed seemed so comfortable while her muscles were relaxing a little in an overwhelming sense of weightlessness. With an appeased sigh, Vivian closed her eyes, listening to her own breathing and beating heart that was making her nerves vibrate throughout her body. She felt quite good, there…
A brutal sleep start made her sat up quickly, realising she was falling asleep.
She had no time for that! she chided herself, getting up, clumsy and confused. She still had to restock her ammo, locate the vehicle bay and snatch an ATV… Another dizzy spell made her reel but she held on; not only was she knackered, but also famished.
On her arm, the wound was nothing more than a still very sensitive white strip with a red halo. Unmoved about it, Vivian wrapped herself in her bathrobe to go raid what wasn’t too far past the expiration date in her fridge. As she expected, she only found fruits and sliced bread.
Even though she wasn’t really sure why she had stuffed her bread in the fridge, she wolfed down three slices of it and an orange with a tall glass of fresh water while getting dressed. From the clothes given by Zeke, she only kept the vest and the gunbelt. For the rest, she put back the outfit from her first stay in the Park, adding Lawrence’s jacket to it.
Making the most of this little boost of energy after her treatment and that lunch, Vivian didn’t lose any more time; she turned her tablet back on to check on hosts around, greeter or otherwise. But there was still only Daisy who hadn’t moved. And she wouldn’t for as long as no-one would pull her out of her sleep mode. She turned her tablet off and stashed it back in the leather pouch at her belt. And, after one last look to her flat, as if for the very last time, Vivian turned around, and left.
Returning to the small hallway happened easily; as Vivian expected, there was no-one other than Daisy. None of her colleagues had left their apartments in the meantime, or if they had, they didn’t linger and hadn’t done anything for her. That being said, neither did Vivian… But she didn’t want to lose more time erasing their encounter from her memory and bringing her back online than she already had with her own care. She was feeling better now, but she still had left a good hour go by!
Her wristwatch was indicating ten past two, and she would lose another twenty minutes in the escalators. So, she’d better make it as quick and easy as she could if she didn’t want to end up roaming through the park by night with her ATV! Well, that, only if she could successfully pull off her stupid plan…
In a brisk, hurried move, Vivian flung open the two frosted glass doors separating the Living Quarters from the atrium. But in front of her, an hideous face twisted into an ugly orange grimace under small dark eyes made her cry out in fright, despite herself.
Stiffened, she let go of the glass panel to pull out her revolver, aiming at the door whose two sides opened again in one same move on two perfectly out of place figures in the hallway of the Living Quarters, and even in the theme of the park itself — samurai.
Those terrorists hadn’t only reprogrammed the greeters! Evidently, they had also picked in the demo area Delos was trying to develop to expand Delos Destinations despite Ford’s stalling.
Their katanas in hand, they made a few steps into the hallway and stopped, doors closing back behind them. And, excepted for the fact that they were blocking her way with their fighting stance, they didn’t seem particularly hostile. The both of them were staring at her without a word, their expression unreadable under the visor of their helmets adorned with large moon crescents. And what Vivian had initially thought to be an ugly face turned out to be only a half-mask covering the mouth and chin of the taller of the two. Even if they weren’t moving, Vivian didn’t lower her weapon. She could have tried to run and find refuge in her flat but, she figured she’d be chased.
"F-freeze all motor functions," she tried.
If it didn't cost anything to try, it also had no effect whatsoever.
"I don’t… I mean you no harm," she stammered, revolver slipping in her clammy palm. "Can you let me through, please?"
She cleared her throat.
"Step aside, now," she commanded with the quiet authority Ford had taught her. "And let me pass."
"To go where?"
The voice was that of a woman with an assertive but mocking drawl. And if the smallest of these samurai in front of her was a woman, it still wasn’t her who had spoken; it was coming from behind the doors.
"Who the fuck are you?!" Vivian shout, still not lowering her gun.
"Does it matter?"
"You bet your ass it does!" she retorted in anger.
If the woman was part of those terrorists or anything else, she wanted to know!
"Who are you and what did you do to the hosts?!"
She only heard a wry laugh from behind the door. The samurai in front of her didn’t make a move, or a sound. Also, had they come to get het in particular or was it just a bad luck and timing to get out now?
"What do you want from me, anyway?!"
"Me, nothin’!" The woman finally snorted as an answer. "But the Professor does."
Puzzlment weakened Vivian’s gun arm a little.
"W-wha…"
"He sent me to bring you to him," the woman was already adding. "So, I’m gonna open the door, now…"
There was no fear for herself in her voice. In fact, it even sounded like a threat. Vivian swallowed and clenched her hand on the handle of her gun. She wasn’t sure she could shoot and cock fast enough to gun down three people, including two hosts who would most likely ignore their mortality response, provided she had to end up defending herself.
Then entered a woman so blond her hair seemed almost white under the hallways’s pale lights, clad in one of the QA’s security black jacket, one of their red automatic rifles hanging from a strap in a completely non-threatening manner. She could have been just that, a QA agent, if the entire right side of her familiar face didn't sport an impressive yet incomplete snake tattoo...
Vivian stiffened and made a step back. That was one of Escaton’s gunslingers, and like every one of them in their merry band, she had an uncommon name; something like Holiday, Independance or Solstice… No — Armistice! Yeah, that was it. And seemingly, she had been reprogrammed — and equipped! — by this Professor that was probably nothing more than a criminal handle or something like that…
So, even if she was walking without threats between the two samurai, Vivian didn’t lower her gun.
"And just so you know," she added with the hint of a smile that made her squint, and the snake slightly closed its jaw on her face. "You can shoot all your bullets, I ain’t gonna die so easily."
Those words made Vivian shudder and, breath short, she let her come closer. The samurai came back to life at the same time to follow her. But Vivian didn’t want to shoot them; those people up there in the control room, this Professor, had to know enough about the hosts to reprogram those whose code and writing was much more complex than the greeters and it was likely that Armistice, here, was only following a narrative like the hosts at the gala!
"Who’s that Professor?" Vivian inquired, shaking as Armistice was getting closer from her barrel as if she was only training a water gun on her. "What does he want f-from me?"
She didn’t dodge the almost jaded look Armistice shot her.
"That’s a question you’re gonna have to ask him yourself."
"No." Vivian firmly replied. "I’m not coming with you!"
"Damn right, you are."
With a sharp move, Armistice disarmed her, almost twisting her wrist. And the samurai each grabbed one of her arms to drag her towards the doors.

Garden care: How to control the Delia Antiqua(onion fly)
This fly (Delia Antiqua) is called onion fly or onion maggot because it most often infests onion plants, but it will sometimes attack garlic and even bulb flowers. Signs of the onion or leek fly can usually be seen with the naked eye. If the onions on your garden suddenly grow slowly, if their leaf plumes begin to turn yellow, wilt, and dry, and if the onions give off an odor that is completely unlike onions, then it is definitely infested with Delia Antiqua (Onion fly). If you dig up the affected plant onion bulbs, you can see patches that resemble decay and later the onions become so soft that they can neither be stored nor eaten.
WHAT DOES DELIA ANTIQUA (ONION FLY) LOOK LIKE? This insect really looks like a small fly and is light gray in color. The fly is about 0.4inch (1cm) long and can be distinguished from males by the dark stripe on its abdomen: only males have this stripe. Female Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) are very fertile and during their lifetime, if they come out of the ground, they can lay up to six dozen white eggs with distinctive longitudinal stripes on the leaf plates of onions or on the bulb itself. Each egg is about 1 mm long. A fairly short period of six to eight days usually elapses between oviposition and the emergence of the larvae. After the larva has had its fill, it pupates and the young individual of the fly, male or female emerges from the cocoon. Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) starts its life cycle very early, usually as early as April, which is why it is considered a very dangerous pest.
WHAT IS USED TO TREAT PLANTS FOR DELIA ANTIQUA (ONION FLY)? To prevent Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) in large plantations, modern, approved insecticides are used in cases where folk remedies do not help. For example, neonicotinoids thiamethoxam and imidacloprid, and organophosphorus compounds. Diazinon and leuconazole are popular. Pyrethroids, such as "Permethrin for veterinary use in dogs, cattle, sheep...", have also proven to be effective against Delia Antiqua (Onion fly). These preparations are used in a liquid form dissolved in water and are sprayed to control Delia Antiqua (Onion fly). When using these preparations for treatment, you must strictly follow the instructions on the package. The active substances of these preparations affect the adult insects precisely, causing their death. For those who do not accept the use of chemicals in their plots, an alternative method of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) control can be recommended, as we will now tell you.
CONTROL OF DELIA ANTIQUA (ONION FLY) BY CONVENTIONAL MEANS
1. Tobacco dust Tobacco dust is popular among gardeners, so it is freely available and there is no need to grind it into dust as many people believe. To use tobacco dust to prevent Delia Antiqua (Onion fly), it can simply be sprinkled on the surface of the soil plot where the onions are growing, spending about a tablespoon per 11 square feet of soil, free of pebbles and dust. If pests have appeared, i.e. flies have started, tobacco powder can be mixed with ordinary river sand or, more effectively, with naphthalene in equal parts (this is more effective because naphthalene smells strong and repels flies). It is said that Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) is not harmed if a mixture of wood ash and paprika or a mixture of paprika and tobacco powder (one tablespoon of this mixture per 11 square feet of soil) is sprinkled liberally on the soil of a vegetable garden. Areas, where the Onion fly comes in and may have already laid eggs or have been infested last season, can be sprayed with a tobacco dip. To do this, dissolve 250 grams of tobacco in a bucket of water, let it soak for a few days, filter it, load it into a sprayer and you can treat the plants at a cost of about 0.26 Gal of solution per 11 square feet.
2. Ammonia against Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) If Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) are flying actively and are likely to be about to emerge as larvae, then you can hit them with ammonia alcohol at the earliest stages, when they are particularly sensitive. To do this, dissolve three tablespoons of ammonia in a bucket of water and treat onion plants with this ingredient in the afternoon, near evening. Considering the rapid development and fertility of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly), treating onion plants with ammonia alcohol can be done two or three times per season. The frequency of treatment is usually every 30 days.
3. Woody ashes In addition to being a fairly good source of potassium (up to 5%), wood ash is also a fly repellent. Wood ash is now available from garden stores and florists, but it is also possible to make your own, which is not complicated. To make wood ash, you need to collect dried branches, billets, bark, and other wood parts and burn them to ashes. To prevent Delia Antiqua (Onion fly), the soil can be completely covered with wood ash in a layer of a few millimeters, or it can be treated with wood ash dissolved in water. To do this, dilute about 500 grams of wood ash in a bucket of water, leave it in a warm room for a day, filter it, fill a sprayer and you can treat the onion plants, treating the leaves and the surrounding soil as completely as possible. Consumption rate: 0.4 Gal per 11 square feet of bed.
4. Salt solution for the control of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) This method is considered to be effective, but it is quite harmful to the soil because the use of salt causes soil salinization. Treatment of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) with salt-based compounds should not be done for more than one season and only if crop rotation is taken into account, i.e. if onions are grown in the same area every four years. As a rule, onions are treated with a salt solution two weeks after germination. To do this, dilute 200 grams of salt (not more!) in a bucket of water and inject the solution into the soil, taking care not to get it on the onion leaves. It is best to carry out this treatment at night and to wet the area well with soft water in the early morning.
HOW TO CONTROL DELIA ANTIQUA (ONION FLY) LARVAE? So, we have already talked about how to control Delia Antiqua (Onion fly), now let's talk about how to control its larvae. If the infestation has started and you not only see the fly but also notice that the onion leaves are turning yellow, then you need to sprinkle a mixture of river sand and naphthalene in the garden where the infestation is occurring as soon as possible. In this case, you need 10 parts of naphthalene to 1 part of sand. Sprinkle it on, do not form a layer, just let the soil be slightly covered. Treatment with infusions of needles, valerian, mint, and wormwood can be effective against Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) larvae. Needle pine requires 50-100 grams per 0.26 Gal, one dose per 11 square feet; valerian - about 500 grams per bucket of water, which is the standard for 30-40 square feet. Mint can be more, for the sharp aroma, about a third of a bucket, consuming also 30-40 square feet, and wormwood - a quarter of a bucket of poured water, given a day to stand can be used, spending on a seedbed of 20-30 square feet. Planters are quite happy with treating Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) with laundry soap or liquid antibacterial soap. Laundry soap requires about half a bar of soap per bucket of water, while antibacterial liquid soap requires about 50 grams per bucket of water. Keep in mind that soap dissolves best in soft water (no flakes), preferably in rainwater. The soap can be applied to the soil and leaves to moisten the surface well, especially for those plants whose feathers have begun to turn yellow. In the case of soap, treatments can be applied at intervals of up to three times a week. Another interesting option: the oldest insecticide is kerosene. Kerosene can also be used to control Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) larvae. Kerosene is good because it is virtually safe for humans and soil, but destructive to Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) larvae. Of course, you cannot use pure kerosene, it must be heavily diluted. To deal with the larvae, you only need 50 grams of kerosene per bucket of water, put it in a sprayer, and apply it to the soil near each bulb, especially those whose leaves have begun to turn yellow. Don't forget that, to consolidate the results, you should turn the soil with a spade immediately after harvesting, but without loosening the clods. In this way, the larvae that have accumulated in the soil over the winter will be killed by the frost.
HOW TO PREVENT THE EMERGENCE OF DELIA ANTIQUA (ONION FLY)?
We have described all the basic methods of controlling Delia Antiqua (Onion fly), trying to tell exactly the most effective folk methods of controlling this pest, without the use of chemicals, as our readers like it. Of course, sometimes it is much easier to prevent the presence of pests on the site than to cure the plant of pests, so preventing the presence of pests on the site also necessarily requires precautions. Thus, in order to exclude the accumulation of pests in the soil and to prevent mass infection of the plant in the bed where you plan to grow onions, you must return to the same place no earlier than 4 years, during which the larvae of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) will simply die without food. In addition, by changing the place where you plant your onions, you can save the soil from a strong depletion of one or another element, such as nitrogen, for example, for which onions have a high demand. In the fall, be sure to dig the plot to the full bayonet of the shovel, as we said above, but try not to break up the soil so that it will freeze even more. Remember that Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) larvae can "burrow" into the soil to a depth of up to 8inch (2 0 cm) and overwinter there. By digging in the area, we minimize the number of overwintering larvae. Next, try alternating beds planted with onions with beds planted with carrots. Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) has difficulty tolerating the odor of carrots, and carrot flies - the odor of onions - so it is possible to "kill two birds with one stone", and in addition, onions and carrots are planted next to each other and get along quite well. Before planting and digging up the onions, try to check the bulbs for larvae. To destroy them, simply place the onion bulbs in brine (one tablespoon per 1.3 Gal) heated to 113°F (45°C) for 8-10 minutes. Placing the bulbs in a 1% manganese solution for two minutes also helps. Such treatment of the bulbs is necessary because if the bulbs are infected, neither a high degree of agronomy nor a clean plot will save the onion planting from infection, as you will put the larvae in your own soil yourself.
If Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) is heavily infested and the bulbs begin to rot, there is nothing that can be done and these plants should be removed from the ground and burned. When planting and sowing onions, try to adhere to the recommended dates possible in your area. This is to ensure that by the time Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) begins to summer and larvae emerge, the plants are strong enough and the larvae are least harmful. It is also important to work around the plot throughout the season, making sure to loosen the soil, not allowing it to crust, and removing weeds more than 33 feet (10 meters) from the plot. If active flies are observed but you don't want to use chemicals, minimize irrigation of the plot's soil to dry out the top layer, then the larvae in the eggs may not hatch. Considering the timing of the larvae emergence we described above, you only need to be patient for a week. You may be wondering why you need to loosen the soil. Biologically, Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) has developed a protective reflex where they do not lay their eggs in loose soil, deeming it unsuitable for hatching larvae. If you find it difficult to loosen the soil continuously, you can cover it with a layer of humus or wood ash to a thickness of 0.4inch (1cm). By the way, the humus or ash can be collected and thrown away when the summer of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) is over. There maybe eggs or larvae there. If there is a strong infestation or when preparing the soil for growing onions when there is a risk of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) infestation, it is necessary to remove the snow from this area in winter so that the soil will freeze harder and the larvae of Delia Antiqua (Onion fly) will be killed. The best results will be achieved if you combine digging and turning the soil, without loosening it, and also with snow removal.
CONCLUSION So we now know a lot about Delia Antiqua (Onion fly), we know that it can lay up to six dozen eggs in its lifetime, it starts flying in April and the larvae hatch in a week or so. We know how to control the fly and how to minimize the risk of its emergence or larval hibernation, all that remains is to put it all into practice, and then we can forget about chemicals forever, and about the year of no production.

Ineffable Valentine’s “Romance in the Rain” (Rated PG)
Summary: Crowley tries to come up with the perfect first kiss for Aziraphale, but Mother Nature doesn't want to co-operate.
Notes: Written for the @ineffable-valentines prompt 'kiss'.
Read on AO3.
“Come on, come on, come on!” Crowley mutters at the clouds overhead, scowling as if they’ve done him a grievous and unforgivable wrong.
“Is there (*gulp*) something the matter, my dear?” Aziraphale squeaks as they swerve left and fly past a hearse, coming so perilously close to the vehicle they’re in danger of causing additional casualties among the living occupants. But it’s par for the course. Crowley has spent more time driving with his eyes on the skies than on the road ahead of him. They’ve scattered a group of businessmen, nearly clipped a planter, and sent a traffic cop writing a citation careening backwards, the Bentley long gone before the poor bastard knew what hit him.
Aziraphale wishes they could have stayed at Crowley’s flat, and not just because of the current danger of losing life and limb. They were having a splendid time. At least, he thought so. They’d been sitting on the sofa sharing a bottle of brandy (at noon on a Tuesday, but Aziraphale reasoned it’s five o’clock somewhere) as they watched Romeo and Juliet on the BBC starring a promising older gentleman that reminded him of Crowley if he squinted his eyes and tilted his head just so.
It was the perfect day for cuddling on the sofa - cold and gray, clouds clustered above threatening rain, granting it in spurts. Aziraphale had sniffled once or twice over the performance - he’s angel enough to admit it. He couldn’t help himself. He loves sweeping romances, and Romeo and Juliet is about as sweeping as one can get.
And if he happened to imagine that Crowley-looking actor playing opposite himself once or twice - caressing his face, looking into his eyes, kissing him passionately (which they’ve had yet to do) - who could blame him?
He thought he’d caught Crowley glance over at him on a few occasions, probably rolling his eyes at Aziraphale’s blubbering. But romance isn’t Crowley’s thing.
Never has been as far as Aziraphale could remember.
“We’ve seen this play about a thousand times already,” Crowley had said. “You’d think you’d remember that they die in the end. And take pretty much everyone with them along the way.”
“I know, I know,” Aziraphale whimpered, patting his pockets for a handkerchief, accepting one from Crowley when it was thrust toward him. “It’s just … it gets me thinking. That’s all.”
“Thinking about what?”
“About love,” he’d answered honestly since he didn’t see a reason not to. “About romance. About …”
And here he’d sputtered. He wasn’t about to make any confessions of love now, sitting on the sofa in front of the television with a head full of liquor; wasn’t going to wax philosophical about the long, long years he’d spent pining for Crowley, knowing that Crowley didn’t feel the same.
Knowing there was no way on Earth a demon could fall in love, and definitely not with an angel.
“About …?” Crowley had asked, but Aziraphale remained tight-lipped and shook his head.
“Doesn’t matter,” he’d replied.
And Crowley had shrugged it off and went back to the movie.
But out of the blue, not ten minutes later, Crowley turned off the television, climbed off the sofa, tossed Aziraphale his coat and said, “Come along, then. We’re going for a drive.”
And drive they have, taking the fastest, most chaotic tour of London Aziraphale has ever had the misfortune to participate in.
Crowley manages to drive past every single picturesque spot Frommer’s has ever touted without stopping, his gaze fixed vindictively on the sky overhead, guided by the shifting nimbostratus. They drive for over an hour, re-visiting a few places more than once but never leaving the car. Eventually Crowley seems to give up and head back to St. James’s Park. He grumbles something to the affect of, “Damned bloody clouds. There were a whole gang of you an hour ago! Where the Hell have you gone off to?” but he doesn’t explain.
He parks his car, throws on a boot to keep the cops off his back, then grabs Aziraphale’s hand and yanks him out. In determined silence, he drags the angel down the jogging paths and through the grass. Aziraphale pants behind Crowley as he fights to keep pace, and while he does, Crowley curses. He curses the blue sky peeking through the clouds, curses the golden rays warming their skin, curses the children coming out to celebrate the sunshine, their parents for bringing them when they should have work to do, even the dogs that accompany them for playing catch so enthusiastically, so focused on his goal, whatever it is, that he almost forgets Aziraphale stumbling along behind him until the angel speaks.
“Crowley … my dear … can we slow down?”
Crowley looks over his shoulder, eyes apologetic behind dark lenses as if he only now realized he might have been walking a hair too fast for him.
“Oh. Yeah. Sorry ‘bout that.” Crowley stops on an obliging patch of grass to let Aziraphale catch his breath, shoulders slumped in defeat. He scans the grounds, glaring at every happy face in sight. He spies a solitary ice cream cart braving the weather and shrugs to himself.
“Fancy a lolly?” he asks, voice flat with disappointment.
“Oh, yes. Please.” Aziraphale smiles and nods, hoping that by agreeing he might lighten Crowley’s inexplicably sullen mood.
Plus, he could really use a nibble.
“Do you want to tell me what’s going on?” Aziraphale asks, following Crowley down the slope to the cart.
“Wanted to try something,” Crowley says gruffly, ordering Aziraphale a strawberry lolly, then waving off his change from the man at the cart.
Aziraphale smiles at the snack Crowley hands to him. “Trying your hand at being a hopeless romantic?” he teases, though he’s certain he’s way off the mark.
“So, what if I was?”
“It would be a first.”
“Would it really? I mean, I do try my best, Aziraphale. Sometimes, it’s just … not obvious.”
“I …” Aziraphale looks from the lolly melting on its stick to the demon standing in front of him - head bowed, fingertips shoved into pockets that have no business being called such, cheeks red and splotchy, yellow eyes staring at his shoes as he passes a single pebble from the toe of his left to the toe of his right. “I guess I didn’t think you had it in you.”
“Yeah, well, not sure if you’ve noticed, but it’s not all that easy for me. Not when … you know … it matters.”
“Maybe I haven’t,” Aziraphale admits, thinking with regret over the times he’s felt sorry for himself that Crowley wasn’t making the first move when he himself could have done so. Or when Crowley might have been, Aziraphale just didn’t catch on. It never occurred to Aziraphale that it might be difficult for Crowley. Aziraphale saw it along the same lines as tempting. If he could conjure feelings of lust in other people, he should be able to conjure similar feelings of love in himself.
Aziraphale realizes only now how wrong that thinking is.
How base and reductive.
“But thank you. It’s incredibly sweet that you tried.” Aziraphale puts a hand on Crowley’s shoulder and buoys up to kiss him on the cheek. Crowley turns into it, capturing Aziraphale’s lips, pulling him close with an arm wrapped around his waist. Aziraphale yelps in surprise, self-conscious at first, but then lost in kissing Crowley in St. James’s Park on such a beautiful, sunny afternoon.
“I’ve wanted to do that all day,” Crowley sighs against his angel’s lips. “For a while now, if I’m being honest.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I wanted it to be perfect. Memorable. And I thought … you know … considering our past, our history together, that rain would make it perfect. But it seems Mother Nature didn’t feel like cooperating.”
Aziraphale stares at Crowley wide-eyed for several seconds. Then he bursts out laughing. “Crowley! You idiot!”
“What!?”
“We’re supernatural. No need to negotiate with nature.” Aziraphale snaps his fingers. Over their heads, the clouds begin to gather, darkening the park so quickly, everyone takes notice. Laughter goes quiet as the humans huddle together, speculating in whispers over what might be going on. Suddenly, the sky crackles with electricity. A large boom shakes the air and rain pours down, drenching everyone … except Crowley and Aziraphale, standing quite comfortably beneath an invisible shield, one shaped suspiciously like an angel’s wing.
“Oh.” Crowley smirks. “Right. You’ve got a point.”
“So … are we just going to stand here, or are you going to kiss me again?”
“Aren’t you worried about the paperwork for …?” Crowley’s eyebrows bounce upward, indicating the rain, the wing, the screeching humans running for cover.
Aziraphale grins, not the least bit concerned. “Screw the paperwork.”
Before Aziraphale’s lips close on his, Crowley growls. “Ooo, feisty.”

Art Deco Terms
Art Deco Terms
Acute Angles: Close relatives of the boomerang, acute angles were inspired by delta-winged military jets that broke speed records in the 1950s. Just as streamlining evoked mighty locomotives and nautical designs in the 1930s, the acute angle and the delta-wing shape became icons of speed in the post-war period. The motif was employed in two dimensions as a decorative element and to give buildings a dynamic, futuristic look.
Aggregate Stones: pebbles, or colored gravel in cement, left untreated for texture or polished mirror-smooth, used to surface walls, floors, and paving.
Aluminum: Postwar budgets and advanced engineering and construction methods allowed for the use of this wonder material with a high strength-to-weight ratio. Plate glasswindows and doors were trimmed in aluminum. Through the electrochemical process of anodizing, protective and decorative coatings were added. Gold anodized aluminum was often used in sun grilles.
Architecture Parlance: Architecture imbued with symbolism to communicate its function. Also known as programmatic architecture.
Asymmetry: In a clean break with the past, Modernism rejected Beaux Arts ideals of balance, symmetry, and hierarchy, which pervaded Art Deco design. Modern engineering made irrelevant the centuries-old reliance on Classical orders in aesthetic compositions and elevations. In plan, asymmetry expressed the American desire for informality and individuality.
Baroque: The lush ornamentation, lavish materials, and awe-inspiring interior space of late Renaissance architecture provided inspiration for architect Morris Lapidus and subsequently his colleagues in pursuit of Miami Beach pleasure domes.
Beanpoles: Debuted in the interiors of architect Morris Lapidus, thin metal rods used as decoration and for space modulation in interior and exterior spaces. They often projected from built-in plantersin all manner of balconies, lobbies, stairways, and porches.
Boomerangs: The boomerang shape, an aerodynamic curve with primitive connotations, became shorthand for speed. The boomerang’s nationwide popularity in the post-war era made it ubiquitous in MiMo, appearing in two- and three-dimensional forms in apartment buildings, supermarkets, and motels.
Boxed Windows: After World War II, Art Deco eyebrowswere elongated into both horizontal and vertical decorative elements, often framing compositions of windows and slump brickpanels. The boxes, or frames, were frequently flared or tapered for an aerodynamic effect.
Brise-Soleils: A fixed or movable device, such as fins or louvers, designed to block the direct entrance of sun rays into a building. Le Corbusier was the first to design these louvered screens as an integral part of a building, not only for climate control, but also to give depth and richness to the normally flat surface of the typical modern façade. The pattern of vertical and horizontal compartments creates a different set of rhythms from those produced by the alternation of wall and window which the brise-soleil conceals. In South Florida, brise-soleils were executed in masonry, metal, and even wood.
Built-In Planters: In Prairie houses, Frank Lloyd Wright often employed successively smaller planters at the bases of exterior walls and corners to anchor the structure to the landscape and create a graduation from the architectural to the natural.
Canted Windows: Extending beyond the typical Modernist use of glass, post-war architects often tilted glass walls outward from the base, usually seen in motel lobbies, storefronts, gas stations, and fast-food restaurants.
Cantilever: A beam or other projection that is unsupported at its projecting end. Cantilevering shows off structural innovation and contributes to asymmetrical design. In the International Style, cantilevering made possible projecting canopies and balconies, also called tray balconies. Shallow masonry cantilevers, a MiMo ornamental device, evolved from eyebrowstypical of 1930s Tropical Art Deco architecture.
Catwalks: A cost-saving device compared with enclosed corridors, exposed, cantileveredexterior corridors were a basic ingredient of two-story motels, residential apartment-motels, and schools throughout South Florida. Sometimes called galleries, the open-air passageways provided a greater sense of independence to individual units.
Chalet Style: A close cousin to the bold gables of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Prairie Style houses, the Swiss chalet style distilled the image of domesticity into a gabled front façade with a prominent, long-eaved roof. Multi-unit MiMo apartment-motels were often consolidated under a symbolic unifying gable roof, an expression of the American dream of a home of one’s own.
Cheese holes: Round holes of various sizes used in interior and exterior walls, which added visual interest in an organic and Modernist way.
Clerestories: Narrow window bands set close to the roofline that let in natural light and emphasize airy structural compositions. Clerestories were a common feature in Wrightian residences and were also adopted by MiMo architects for their Modernist appeal.
Compressed Arches: Vertically squeezed or horizontally squashed semicircular arches, forming roofs or canopies, were a popular device borrowed from Brazilian Modernism, which disapproved of emphasizing entryways.
Concrete Block and Stucco: Readily available, mass-produced concrete block became the standard South Florida building material from the 1920s onward. Stucco, an inexpensive fine plaster, was used to coat exterior block walls and was molded into decorative features. South Florida’s fantasy architecture from Mediterranean Revival to MiMo futurism was often simply stucco “icing” on a standard “cake” of concrete block. In MiMo architecture, stucco was molded into myriad abstract relief patterns to harness the abundant sunshine for ornamental effect.
Concrete Canopies: Thin concrete roofs, which often projected outward toward a driveway, street, or parking lot, were commonly used to shelter building entrances. Minimalist canopies with an uplifting sweep or jaunty zigzag celebrated arrival at elegant MiMo apartment buildings.
Crab Orchard Stone: Quarried in the Cumberland Plateau of eastern Tennessee, this hard sandstone became a defining decorative material in MiMo from the hotels of Miami Beach to the campus of the University of Miami. The popularity of the stone, which comes in shades of tan, buff, blue gray, and pink, was partly inspired by Wright’s reliance on natural materials in his domestic architecture. The use of natural stone in the rec room of the House of the Future at the 1939–40 New York World’s Fair strengthened the association of natural stone with leisure, informality, and the good life.
Curtain Wall Construction: A non-structural exterior wall, usually of plate glass, steel, or aluminum, hung on the structural frame. Developed in cool, cloudy Northern European climates, glass curtain walls required shading with grilles, screen block, and louversin South Florida.
Cut outs: The simple device of perforating eaves with circular or square openings hinted at the structural potential of modern materials and provided visual interest. Roof cutouts were usually paired with a corresponding planter to allow plants to grow through the openings. A palm tree piercing a perforated eave is a classic MiMo touch.
Decorative Railings: Railings along catwalksin motels and motel-apartments were frequently among the few opportunities for ornamentation, and appeared in imaginative, abstract geometric and curvilinear compositions. North Beach is particularly rich in decorative railings.
Delta Wings: Inspired by the advancement in aviation following World War II, the delta wing shape appeared in MiMo architecture as a whimsical design element. During the 1950s the delta wing was used on several aircraft to increase speed. When viewed from above, the delta wing shape resembles a triangle.
Egg crate Façades: The square or rectangular grid created by exposed edges of concrete floors and walls projecting outward from the building wall. Shallow modules provided shade to windows and a place to anchor brise-soleils, while deeper recesses are often used for terraces.
Exposed Concrete: In keeping with the Modernist tenet of the exterior expression of structure and materials, exposed concrete was used extensively by Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, and Marcel Breuer. The material was common in late MiMo, reaching high points in the Miami Marine Stadium and the Kendall campus of Miami-Dade College.
Eyebrows: An example of styling in MiMo architecture, cantileveredsunshades over individual windows and doors in 1930s Tropical Art Deco evolved into continuous, horizontal cantileversand vertical elements of varying depths.
Floating Planes: The concept of defining space with a hovering, seemingly immaterial appearance was made possible due to advancements in building materials. Reinforced concrete offered a homogenous coherence and horizontal spreads of considerable dimensions. This new architectural design technique was influenced by The De Stijl art movement and imitated the free-floating lines and planes of a Mondrian work. The first internationally recognized building which defined volume with the use of floating planes was the Barcelona Pavilion designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohefor the 1929 International Expositionin Barcelona, Spain. The use of floating planes was also embraced by Frank Lloyd Wright who influenced many architects following World War II who sought to create dramatic, monumental spaces.
Floating Staircases: Flights of stairs without risers or sideboards, often cantileveredfrom a wall so that the treads seem to float without support, embody the space-ageaspirations of the era and can be found in MiMo residences to offices.
Folded Planes: Inspired by the iconic roof of the U.S. Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, concrete planes, folded into origami-like configurations, create a wealth of light and shadow effects. Used as a purely ornamental device, folded planes appear in commercial MiMo architecture.
Hyperbolic Paraboloids: Square and circular planes were warped into eye-catching topical shapes. MiMo architects enthusiastically adopted the popular 1950s motif of acute hyperbolic parabolic curves, showcased in the extraordinary roof of the now-demolished Best Western Marina Inn and Yacht Harbor in Fort Lauderdale or the daringly engineered canopy of the demolished Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida.
Interior and Exterior Blending: Continuity of interior and exterior space is characteristic of Modernist design in all climes, but South Florida’s mild weather was especially conducive to the concept, most notably in the homes of Igor B. Polevitzky and the Coconut Grove School of architects (Alfred Browning Parker, Rufus Nims, Kenneth Treister, George Reed, et al.).
Interior Space Modulation: Modern construction and engineering freed architects from reliance on load-bearing walls, allowing for voluminous interiors unbounded by walls and traditional room proportions. Drawing on his expertise in store design, Morris Lapidus pioneered the use of multiple floor levels to create subtle spatial transitions in his hotel interiors. Other space modulation devices include tray ceilings, banks of beanpoles, cheeseholewalls, faux support columns, and ancillary enclosed volumes like reception desks and banks of elevators.
Intersecting Planes: The mastery of man over materials was celebrated with masonry, stone, and glass planes that magically seemed to intersect and interpenetrate, in canopies that penetrate glass lobby walls and entire façade compositions.
Jalousies: Operable, narrow glass louverswere ubiquitous before air-conditioning, because of their ability to maintain ventilation during rainy weather. Jalousies of frosted glass simultaneously provided privacy and were used in a full range of sizes from small bathroom windows to long, floor-to-ceiling arrangements. The West Laboratory School at the University of Miami was the acme of jalousie construction.
Keystone: A form of oolitic limestone, or oolite, quarried in Florida’s Middle Keys, hence its name. Readily available, easy to carve, and textured with fossilized sea life, Keystone was used extensively in Mediterranean Revival and Tropical Art Deco structures. It was used less frequently after the war, almost invariably in random ashlar. Miami oolite, which makes up the South Florida coastal ridge, is a softer, more porous type and is commonly given the misnomer coral rock.
Lettering: Certain typefaces on building signs, especially a round, upward-slanting script style, imparted a sense of carefree, casual 1950s living. Other motifs included sans serif letters, slanting italicized letters, and use of upper and lower cases.
Louvers: An assembly of angled, overlapping blades or slats, set vertically or horizontally, which may be fixed or adjustable. Originally louvers were designed for window and door openings to admit air and sunlight to varying degrees and to exclude rain. A common feature of Subtropical Modern homes, wooden louvers, modeled after the operable wooden louvers from Cuba known as persianas, very likely inspired jalousie windows. In Modern architecture, louvers became elaborate design elements in their own right. Fixed vertical louvers, in metal or masonry, were used to block direct sunlight and to create colonnade-like shadows, as in the Collins Avenue Façades of the Seville and Golden Sands hotels, and in Temple Menorah.
Marine Imagery: MiMo buildings continued the Tropical Art Deco tradition of depicting aquatic images but in more abstract forms, like the gradations of sea green mosaic tile representing the ocean’s depths on the façade of the Eden Roc hotel. Representations of sea life, such as mermaids, dolphins, sea horses, and seashells, were common in MiMo residences and grand resorts, as well as in MiMo motels especially in Fort Lauderdale.
Metal Grilles: Sometimes custom-made in an abundance of finely detailed designs, grilles were used in a similar manner as concrete brise-soleilsand louvers: to block sunlight. A ubiquitous feature of MiMo office buildings until they were made obsolete by reflective thermal glass, metal grilles were sometimes used simply for decorative effect.
Mosaic Tile: Glass tile, primarily from Italy, and ceramic tile rank with crab orchard stoneas a common MiMo decorative material. Mosaic tile made a splashy debut in the full-height panels on the façade of the Eden Roc hotel, and was later used to give color and sparkle to spandrels, public interior spaces, fountain basins, bathrooms, and other features.
Murals: Reflecting the popularity of the abstract, billboard-sized murals in Mexico City, large exterior murals appeared in and on MiMo architecture after 1960. The tile murals of the Bacardi USA building are one of the finest examples of Latin American influence on MiMo. At the Alexander condominium-hotel, Charles F. McKirahan employed a Polynesian-style full-height mural to give the narrow end of the building a strong presence on Collins Avenue.
Pedestal and Superstructure: Large Modernist buildings are often composed of a tower or superstructure atop a broad base. Pedestal-and-tower buildings were usually office buildings, but architects of resorts adapted the configuration, which was subsequently copied around the world and known as the Miami Beach hotel type. In resorts, the wide pedestal was appropriate for housing lobbies, ballrooms, and meeting halls.
Pilots: Another adaptation of the International Style, cylindrical concrete support columns that raised building masses above open ground levels and created areas of shade often used for parking.
Plate Glass: Thick sheets of high-quality glass were cast in broad plates and used in storefronts and hotel and motel lobbies. Steel-skeleton construction allowed for a generous use of glass, which became a hallmark of the International Style and a universal Modernist expression. In South Florida, a truly modern use of glass was not widely achievable until the MiMo period.
Populace: A term coined by the architectural critic Thomas Hine, referring to the flamboyant decorative style of the 1950s and 1960s, which employed bright colors and futuristic contours to impart a sense of luxury to mass-produced consumer items from appliances and cars to Miami Beach resorts.
Porte Cochere: In MiMo resorts, the driveway drop-off area becomes a dramatic ornamental device. In some hotel and even condominium exteriors, elaborate, fanciful porte cocheres were the only break from otherwise purely Modernist designs.
Proscenium: A façade frame which connects and projects above the roofline of two adjacent buildings.
Pylons: MiMo commercial and apartment buildings frequently employed vertical masonry panels as the centerpiece of a façade of intersecting planes and volumes. Pylons were also the preferred location for automobile-scale signage. Reflecting the popularity of Wright’s Fallingwater, pylons were often clad in crab orchard stoneor slump brick.
Random Ashlar Pattern: Paving or masonry consisting of stones cut into squares and rectangles of various sizes, or a faux version of this.
Ribbon Windows: Horizontal window bands were another earmark of the International Style, with its non-load-bearing walls. Ribbon windows appear in MiMo-style offices, hotels, and institutional buildings. Banded windows imparted a strong Modernist character to hotels like the Fontainebleau and were shaded with sun-protection devices in Subtropical Modernist buildings.
Roman Brick: Distinctively thinner and longer than conventional brick, roman brick was favored by Frank Lloyd Wright for its horizontality and fine texture, and became popular in the 1950s. Most roman brick in MiMo architecture is actually slump brick.
Rounded Eaves: An easily distinguishable characteristic of MiMo apartment-motels and houses, thick, rounded eaves were used to impart a sense of fullness to otherwise spare, rectilinear structures and to emphasize a sense of shelter.
Sawtoothed Floor Plates: MiMo hotel architects often designed floor plates with rooms set on the angle of a sawtooth, so that rooms facing north and south would have ocean views.
Screen Block: Mass-produced, cast-concrete block, also known locally as “breeze block,” was used in an imaginative variety of geometric and organic patterns to create stunning abstract compositions like the all-screen-block façade of the TechnoMarine Building on Biscayne Boulevard and NE 29 Street, and Wahl Snyder’s McArthur Engineering Building at the University of Miami.
Screening: Subtropical Modernists fully integrated mesh screening into their residential designs as they adapted the open Modernist houses of semi-arid California to humid, mosquito-ridden South Florida.
Shed Roofs: Wright brought the long, sloping shed roof, a feature of what Vincent Scully identified as the Shingle Style, back into the American mainstream with his design for Taliesin West. The shed roof became shorthand for modern American domesticity and can be found in countless MiMo houses and motels.
Slump Brick: Synthetic slumped brick was a ubiquitous decorative material in MiMo. The inexpensive concrete product came in a range of sizes, textures, and colors. Brick imagery balanced Modernism with a sense of tradition and domesticity.
Space-Age Imagery: A number of MiMo landmarks capitalized on space-age imagery, such as the University of Miami’s Pick Music Library, with its extending pods like those on a lunar landing module, and the Pepsi-Cola Bottling pavilion, with its spiraling floating staircases, a vision straight out of the 1953 film The War of the Worlds. Toward the end of the MiMo era, the television cartoon series The Jetsons reflected and parodied the period fascination with the future.
Spandrels: Panels placed between the window head of one floor and the windowsill of the floor above. MiMo spandrels were often clad in glass mosaic tileor textured, painted stucco.
Textured Stucco: Inexpensive stucco lent itself to the creation of textures and abstract decorative relief in the abundant Miami sunshine.
Tray Balconies: Cantileveredbalconies with concrete parapets (low walls, usually formed by the projection of a wall above a flat roof) are used for their sculptural form in MiMo hotels and residences.
Wiggles: Biomorphic kidney shapes popular in postwar design usually appeared as ceiling coves or trays for indirect lighting.
