Sophie canonically having (forgive the tiktok term) zero rizz is something I always forget about her and it's kinda hysterical... (sophie voice) me and my new boyfriend I pulled by being batshit, doing what Agatha tells me, inventing the miniskirt, and then attempting to kill him once I get bored of him

I find it very interesting how since the readers are not actually from one specific fairytale, they kind of narratively embody lots of them at the same time. there are overt references (like the red-hot shoes in surviving fairy tales and grimm the cupid) but the whole narrative takes pieces. sophie starts off as a cinderella type candidate; dying mother deeply affected her, father remarries to a woman she hates who has two stepchildren, glass slippers and homemade dress, good deeds; but she refuses to cook for her father (the oil and smoke would clog her pores!), she is far crueller to honora than honora is to her, and frequently her inner monologue slips into something very un-cinderella like. by the time they get to school, agatha takes over, and gets the fairy godmother and the blue dress and the iconic shoes (lol) and the prince. she also accidentally does things like help animals, and do lots of work on someone else's behalf... also, agatha's transformation (or, lack of) is ugly-duckling reminiscent; nothing had to change, she just had to grow into herself. (what's for dinner? duckling.) sophie, instead, becomes more of a wicked queen type; disguising herself as an old woman, using ravens (no one seems to remember that but she did, like the original wicked queen), green w jealousy bc the magic mirror on the wall has declared agatha the fairest of them all, instead (both in magic in the mirror and when she sees her snow ball reflection in the barrier.) which probably explains why sophie sticks agatha in that ice coffin at the no ball. very snow-white. and tedros rescuing agatha from the thorns is very sleeping-beauty-wall-of-briars, as well, and then the camelot stuff doesn't rly need to be explained. also grimm the cupid, named after the grimm brothers lmao. nicola, for her part, is a capable bookworm from a provincial town dragged off into a magical world and into a love affair with a man who's can turn into a beast; but unfortunately that curdles pretty badly...

It makes me so crazy how Tedros and Sophie are two sides of the same coin and No One Talks About It...? They're opposite ends of each conflict in each book; Good and Evil / Prince and Witch, Boy and Girl, even Young and Old; Sophie is relentlessly, anachronistically modern, and Tedros is from the most ancient legend of any of the lead characters, and royalty relies upon tradition and dynasty. In book 1, Sophie dies and Agatha ends up saving her. In book 6, Tedros dies and Agatha ends up saving him (in a roundabout way). They both die to rectify past mistakes or transgressions, even though neither of them should really have had to do that. Sophie's mother is dead, and she resents her father and his new family. Tedros's father is dead, and he resents his mother and Lancelot. They both know they're a lot like their dead parent, and they kinda come to hate it, and try to escape it with varying degrees of success; or at the very least, their actions are dictated by said parent, especially their worse decisions. They're both a bit vain and a bit prideful and a bit fake. They're initially obsessed with appearances, and seriously good at putting up fronts. They both rely heavily on Agatha to keep them grounded. They both get deeply upset and defensive when they percieve they've been rejected or abandoned. They both have a temper and zero impulse control. They both appeal to the two separate sides of Agatha; Sophie the part of her that wants to be ordinary, Tedros the part of her that wants to be worthy of more, and valued and important. This, of course, makes them woefully incompatible because the things they resent about each other (Tedros thinks Sophie is a fake and unreliable and self-centred, Sophie thinks Tedros is obtuse and insensitive and unworthy of Agatha's attention) are criticisms that could easily be turned around on the person making them. It just seems fascinating to me that they're probably one of the strongest cases for foils / parallels in the series but it never really gets brought up.

Relationships: Agatha/Tedros (The School for Good and Evil) Additional Tags: background reatrix, title from a stevie nicks song, Post-Canon, Post-Book 6: One True King, Book 6: One True King Spoilers, POV Outsider, (for one half), set about two years after OTK?? Series: Part 18 of filling in canon Summary:
“How you thrive, darling, when no one can call you out on your ineptitude…” Agatha snapped out her sleeves with a flick of her wrists, and grinned horribly. “On the contrary, darling, I have never been more competent in my life. Now, tell me what the hell you did with the rest of my breakfast.” — The Camelot servants are somewhat baffled by the manner of court they now serve in. Particularly the ones that directly attend to the Queen… and particularly those that don’t quite know what they’re getting themselves into. For her part, Agatha is having quite a good time, these days.

was rewatching the movie and honetsly the scene when she's giving sophies note is so funny because tedros compliments her and agatha goes "do they usually all smile and bat their eyes at you" and you can see she's had the realisation that she's not supposed to be mean to him but its her defense mechanism and he's also thrown off, but then when he responds nicely SHES thrown off so she switches to insulting herself and talking about her cat and then TEDROS is thrown off AGAIN because of the abrupt change in subject so "cats are good judges of character" and agatha calls him out on it immediately and he's like. oh man im Down what do i even say now. and then he starts COMPLIMENTING himself so agatha is snarky again as defense mechanism. and then she remembers again that wait im not supposed to insult him but then he laughs which makes her laugh too and then she realises wait sophie likes him and then remembers the note and gives it to him.
and then agatha defends sophie and tedros is just like. "that does not happen normal girl." which made me laugh a lot for some reason and then she remembers that sophie is def a princess and remembers she's apparently not and then focuses on tedros and finally introduces herself and tedros is like "you're definitely not normal" and she's like 🤨 and he's like shit was that not a good line and goes "in a good way" and SHES JUST SMILING AND THEN WHEN YUBA IS ACTING LIKE HES ON FUCKING CRACK THEYRE JUST LAUGHING TOGETHER AND I LOVE THEM SO MUCH
