Describe your current relationship with nature. How has this developed/evolved? Who offered you “a sense of place,” as described in our textbook?

Over the better part of two decades, I have developed a lasting and impactful relationship with nature. Both of my parents have been instrumental in helping foster this positive relationship with the natural world. Some of my earliest fond memories are of times spent at a boat-only access cottage property on a small island owned by friends of our family on Lake Muldrew, near Gravenhurst Ontario. Every summer we spent at minimum a couple weeks on this island. My father, a Wildlife Biologist would walk around the property pointing out various plants, animals and wildlife. A particular fascination of mine when I was about 10 was exploring a “floating” peat bog adjacent to the island admiring cool carnivorous plants like pitcher plant and sundews and catching dragonflies and damselflies with nets and using a hand-lens and a fieldguide to identify them to species before setting them free. While the owner of the island died close to 10 years ago now, and we have not visited in even longer, the memories remain. I can still recall clearly the pungent smell of the bog, how it felt to walk on the squishy, and almost bouncy floating mats of peat, and the beautifully mournful calls of the Eastern Whip-poor-will we would hear almost every night. These lazy days of summertime spent hiking, swimming and kayaking instilled a deep connection with the natural world.

 For the past decade or so, my primary hobby has been birdwatching, known to those who are serious about the hobby as “birding”. My dad again was instrumental in curating my love for birds. It was something we did together on weekends and involved a lot of roadtrips and travelling around the province, as we tried to track down the over 300 species that at some point in the year either migrate through or spend the winter or summer in the province. Birding became the ultimate scavenger hunt; to find certain species you would have to learn about their life-history traits such as migration patterns/timing, habitat preferences, and to decipher their songs and calls. In recent years I have worked at Point Pelee National Park near Windsor Ontario in May, where an abundance of the colourful neotropical songbirds pass through on their journeys from faraway places like Panama and Colombia to nest in boreal regions of the country. Working as a bird guide there has reinforced this passion and allowed me to pass on my enthusiasm about the natural world to others. This hobby also indirectly shapes my worldviews, ideas and politics and many of my closest friends are people who share this same interest and passion. More recently, I have been trying to become a better all-around naturalist, and have started paying more attention to native plants, as well as butterflies and moths. Travel is another passion of mine- the past few years I have travelled to many remote and tropical destinations in search of different bird and animal species.

In summation, to me nature is a never-ending source of knowledge, and it provides inspiration, deep relaxation and joy. It truly has shaped who I am today.

CedarCoast Designs an Indigenous Cultural Centre on Superior's Remote North Shore

The Cultural Community and Healing Centre is being built for the people of Biigtagong Nishnaabeg First Nation Community.

CedarCoast is excited to be a key part this extraodinary story! Together with the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation and the Ontario First Nations Technical Service Corporation (OFNTSC), CedarCoast has designed - and is in the midst of building - this centre intended for healing and inspiration. 

Envisioned with a large deck offering breathtaking vistas of the majestic Gichigami, pristine white sands, and the surrounding north woods, this project is a testament to the collaborative vision of Biigtigong Nishnaabeg First Nation, OFNTSC and CedarCoast.

The amazing project team was organized by the OFNTSC to include Prime Project Solutions and CedarCoast Timber Homes. The remote location, with no roads in or out, required complex logistics and risk management, sourcing local tradespeople and helicopter services (during the recent forest fire emergencies!) to provide timely aerial delivery for every material component involved in the construction of the project.

The project's highlights included:

3,000+ sq. ft., full cedar building with completed interior walls and ceiling finishes, windows, decking and steel roofing.

Detailed pre-construction planning for ‘rapid project’ work: 12 weeks elapsed time from beginning to end.

Overcoming logistical and risk management hurdles in an isolated location.

Partnering with local tradespeople for positive community impact.

Sourcing helicopter services (during the recent forest fires) to provide timely aerial delivery for every material component in the project.
